My MacBook is having Kernal Panics

My 2008 MacBook [Running OS X 10.5.8 (Leopard)] will for no reason show the restart screen with the five language which indicates a Kernal Panic. It's happening often and I need asistance on how to repair this.

A kernel panic is usually, but now always, caused by hardware, with memory the leading cause. First thing I would do is to run the Apple Hardware Test (you'll need your original OS X disks for this).

  • I'm having kernal panics even in single user mode

My new Mac Pro has been having kernal panics left and right. I've done everything suggested here plus everything the Apple people have been telling me to do both on the phone and at the local Apple store. Nothing helps and the last call I made the Apple tech suggested I install a new hard drive which he is sending me. I also have his extension number so I can call him when the install is done. In the meantime while I'm waiting for the new hard drive I manage to reinstall the system after a couple of tries and just for grins boot into single user mode and let the computer sit for awhile. When I get back I find the computer has once again crashed and this one line stands out "simple lock deadlock detection". What this means I have no clue but I'm beginning to suspect what I have is a real lemon. If anyone has some insight they'ld like to share on this I'm open to suggestions.
P.S. And just to let you know I've done the following:
    1. I've booted into safe boot mode and it crashes
    2. I've booted off the install DVD and let it stand and it crashes
    3. I've disconected everything but the mouse and keyboard and it crashes
    4. I've reinstalled the system numerous times and it still crashes
    5. I've taken it to the local Apple store where they replaced the memory and it still crashes
    6. I've called the Apple help line and followed their suggestions which included unplugging the computer for 15 seconds to clear the SMU and it crashes even worse.
    7. I've zapped the pram and reset the nvram and it still crashes
    8. Even when I left it at the local Apple Store where they used their monitor, mouse, keyboard, and power cord it still crashes
    9. It crashes on startup from time to time
    10. And last but not least it crashes in single user mode even though I've done fsck -fy and then let it just sit
    11. Oh yes and one more thing, the crashes are completely random and unpredictable.

Well I finally resolved my issue, hopefully. Upon installing the new hard drive I had no problems for a week or so and decided to add a second drive and put my old system on it and see what would happen when I booted from the second drive. All went well for a week and then boom the crashes began again. I then switched back to the new drive with the fresh system and all went well for a little over a week when boom the panics returned. I called Apple and they made an appointment for me at the local Apple store. After looking at my files which included about 7 phone calls and several visits to the Apple store the best solution was a brand new Mac Pro. All this has been covered under warranty which is awesome. The only crashing I've had to date had to do with something called "mdimportserver" whatever that is. I also can only use one ethernet connector which is strange. I figured it might have to do with the new hard drive so I booted over to the old drive and everything is working fine except for the ethernet port which I haven't tried yet. I figure for now it's best to let that sleeping dog alone since everything else is working so good. When I'm sure this new Mac is working ok I'll wipe the new drive and use Super Duper to clone this system over rather than use Apple's migration assistant which evidently didn't do such a good job of migrating my system over. I'll let you all know how it goes several weeks from now hopefully.

Are you getting the KP on startup, after its booted?
If you startup in Safe Mode (depress Shift key during startup), does it KP?
Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html Also look at Tutorial: An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060309075929717
Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices except your monitor, keyboard and mouse. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: Testing RAM @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
Do you have an Apple Hardware Test disc (the AHT is on the Install/Restore DVD that came with your Mac)? Running the Apple Hardware Test in Loop Mode is an excellent troubleshooting step for finding intermittent hardware problems. It is especially useful when troubleshooting intermittent kernel panics. If Loop Mode is supported by the version of the Apple Hardware Test you are using, you run the Extended Test in Loop Mode by pressing Control-L before starting the test. Looping On should appear in the right window. Then click the Extended Test button. The test will run continuously until a problem is found. If a problem is found, the test will cease to loop, indicating the problem it found. If the test fails, be sure to write down the exact message associated with the failure. In some cases, RAM problems did not show up until nearly 40 loops, so give it a good run.
May be a solution on one of these links.

  • Still having kernal panic

A quick history....a week ago I migrated data via firewire from my old G5 to my new intel based iMac and a kernal panic occured on the G5. I've read all sorts of docs and fixes, not much of which makes sense to me, and I'm still having problems. Now the kernal panic occurs immediately after user login. The only devices connected to the G5 are the keyboard and mouse...though I guess the mouse is connected to the keyboard.
I don't have my old install disc so I can't do the hardware test that was recommended, and as I can't boot up, I can't test my RAM either. Please help.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it is some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • I am having kernal panic problems.

I have had Kernal Panic problems over time.
It happened when I was running Second Life in my 4GB MacBook Pro.
Yesterday I had 8 GB installed (Kensington) and it has Panicked twice.
Here are my Panic Notes.  Can anyone tell me what the problem might be?
    Thank you,

  • Trying to find source of Macbook Pro Retina kernal panics (system report in post)

My Macbook Pro Retina running Mountain Lion has at least one kernal panic a day. Sometimes the wallpaper resets to default. It only happens while it's asleep and I have only ever once caught it on the error screen (meaning it's not happening as I wake it up but rather while the screen is off). I have had my computer and this problem for a while so I finally tried taking it to Apple to resolve the problem. It's been confirmed twice not to be a hardware problem and I have had the entire logic board replaced.
All other threads seem to say the problem is bluetooth but I never use bluetooth and it is always off. I DID do a full system reset and the problem went away but restoring the computer from time machine brought it back after a couple days. Is there any way of figuring out what software is causing the problem? Is there a way to use time machine to migrate applications and files to a reset computer instead of doing a full system recover and would that possibly fix the problem?
I would like to avoid updating to the newest OS if possible for reasons.
    Here is the system report:

Boot into safe mode (restart holding down SHIFT key). If no KP, then uninstall and reboot. If KP, then most likely hardware related.  Run the Apple Hardware Test suite, extended tests at least twice, followed by Rember.  See

  • Also having Kernal Panic issues

I am also having issues with a Kernal Panic. My new refurbished MBP was working fine for a couple of days and now all of a sudden I got a couple yesterday and have gotten 3 today. I called tech support this morning and we checked for errors and reset the permissions. If you could help me with the logs as well that would maybe give an Idea of where to start..thanks. Below is the logs. Also the only thing I have put on the machine is Skype and I also transferred pictures and Itunes library from my pc based laptop to this machine using a usb flash drive. I dont know if that would have anything to do with it.

Chalk me up as having this increasingly frequent error as well. I never noticed the problem for over a year but upon having the machine returned after some repairs I seem to get it all the time. I'm averaging once a day but often multiple times in a day. Mine seems to be tied to Safari and high internet use (just surmising).

  • Am i having Kernal Panics?

Every so often an application stops responding and must be force quit. After it is force quit a window pops up saying ______ quit unexpectedly. This is normal. What isn't normal is when this happens to OS X. The screen suddenly goes black and the fans start going full blast. I then must manually shut off my imac and restart OS X. Once it boots up the same window pops up saying OS X quit unexpecedly. Are these kernal panics???

Rather than wait (or limp along) why not run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Loop mode. If it passes, then run Rember/Memtest to insure nothing adverse there with RAM.
Backup and do a full Zero-All Erase followed by a clean install. Then sit and watch for a week before adding any drivers, extensions, and avoid anything that truly modifies the system, aka "haxies."
You may just have corrupt plist (preferences) or cache (user, system, library, can be fonts, or application). Always a good idea to trash all the internet cache and temp files that build up.
And repair your drive from a 2nd clone that you keep (ie, don't update with your possibly corrupt working system, use another drive for that) just for "emergency repairs."
Bad sectors on the drive, faulty memory, can then lead to corrupt files, filesystem, directory - it "snowballs" and escalates.

  • Macbook pro (2010) kernal panic

    Hello,
My macbook pro is having continuous kernal attacks. This usually happens when I am watching a video, streaming Netflix, connecting my computer to my TV via HDMI, but sometimes when I am browsing the internet or working on a document. It has become much more frequent the past couple of months. The screen goees black, if sound is playing it gets 'stuck' like a record player skipping. The keyboard remains illuminated and I have to force a shut down by holding the power button. I have downloaded the video update found here. That's about as fancy as I get for fixing my own computer, I'm not very technical. Once the computer restarted I tried to stream Netflix again; I immediately had another attack. Also, (no idea if this is related) but after each attack I have to uninstall and reinstall the Silverlight plug-in for Netflix.
I have Mac Os X version 10.6.8 from 2010, processor: Intel Core i7. Do I need to give more information? Let me know if I do.
If I have to take my computer in for repairs, does anyone have a guess as to what it will cost? I'm past my warrenty and I don't have much money to spend at the moment.
Thank you anyone who can give advice and/or help me understand what is happening!
Here is a copy and past of the latest attack:

    Hello KMW2020,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
The following article has troubleshooting steps to find out what could be causing the kernel panic on the computer:

    Take care,

  • Kernal panics

so my macbook started having kernal panics last week which eventually crashed my hard drive. i had my local apple store replace the hard drive and went back to my original apple ram, thinking my 3rd party ram was the problem. the computer was good for a few days but now i'm having the panics again. i've begun to notice that they occur more often when i'm charging the battery. they seem to occur less (or not at all, i've kind of just realized this and can't remembering one happening when not plugged in.. will update thread later on this).
here are the logs from the kernal panics i've had so far. any help would be great, thanks.

ok, so here's a brief update. after realizing i was only having the kernel panics when my computer was being charged, i did an smu reset and all was well for quite some time. i ran a bunch of apps, which usually causes a panic, and all was well. then just a few moments ago when i thought i was in the clear my computer simply turned off and restarted with no notice. it did not have a panic and did not give the usual "mac os x" quit unexpectedly when it relaunched, but this is till troubling. this was not a problem i was having, but i figure it's somehow related. i have an appointment with the apple store for thursday night. i suppose they can take a look at it. i'm hoping it's a battery issue or something and not the logic board, but any ideas? anything else i can do to try to rectify this situation?

  • Macbook Kernal Panics ever since I got it

I bought a Macbook, White 2GHz Intel Core Duo, last September and ever since I bought it have been having Kernal Panics. I tried to work out a pattern for the panics but they happen all the time for no particular reason. I've done a reinstall of Mac OS X, I have repaired permissions and done a search for disk problems. The only thing that I think it can be is a problem with the RAM slots or something like that. I bought it in America and am now in Japan but too far away from an Apple store. Any ideas on what to do would be great.
    Thanks,
    Cronosan
Macbook Intel Core Duo White   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

When I first got my PowerMac I had very much the same issue, but I quickly figured out what was going on: no matter what load I gave the computer, It remained completely silent, the fans always at a minimum. I found out that the Fan Control Unit was NOT working properly, and as you put the CPUs to work, their temperature would go up and up and up until some 70 degess celsius and then... Kernel Panic! My unit had to be completely replaced. Does your computer fans work? Anyway, it really sounds like you need a replacement.

  • Kernal panics on macbook pro

Hi, thanks for letting me know that a.brody. I have had my macbook pro since late jan, not long after getting it back home to the uk as I bought it in the us I started having kernal panics, spoke to the apple care team they told me to archive and install and check permissions to no avail, spoke to them again today and the guy just said to re-install os x, don't really want to be doing that as I don't feel it will make any difference, have been reading on a few discussions and thought I would see if you could help, it seems to happen when I am using skype or Ichat, I've been in contact with skype and they advised me to reinstall but there shouldn't have been a problem anyway and is not something that they have had reported, since re-installing there seems to be no problems but this was only this afternoon, I'm running os x with all the latest updates, and have no unusual third party software could someone please take a look at my panic log and see if they can help, thanks : )

You've been advised to erase the drive and reinstall OS X to see if that fixes the problem. Until you do that there's really no point examining other alternatives.
If an Erase and Install doesn't resolve the problem then take the computer in for repair.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values.

  • Kernal Panic X2

So my first MacBook had bad Kernal panics and I returned it within a week. Now I've had my new MacBook Pro and it is having Kernal Panics as well. Should I just keep returning them to Apple until they send me a machine that actually works, or is this a problem that can be fixed?
My first MacBook I had an Apple Tech work on it for about 8 hours one day and when I took it home it had a kernal panic no less that 20 mins after I started it up.
My new MacBook although it doesnt have as many Kernal Panics it completly messes up my computer setting and I have lost hours of work and I am quite frustrated when I get them.
I am also planning on getting my little brother a MacBook for when he goes off to college in the fall and I want to make sure that I send him off with a computer that works!!
Thank you for any suggestions and support in this matter

Which settings does it mess up?

  • New MBP: Kernal Panic on 2nd start-up

No third-party apps have been installed on this thing yet. Opened it up, went through registration process, software update and the subsequent restart. closed the machine after browsing the web for 5 min. This morning, instead of waking up, I get the start-up tone followed by black screen. After a force shutdown/restart, it freezes. On the next attempt to restart, it starts up but gives the message below. Is this a sign of a dud machine or should I not be worried? Any advice on preventing future occurances of this?

Hi, I'm having a similar problem, I have had my macbook pro since late jan, not long after getting it back home to the uk as I bought it in the us I started having kernal panics, spoke to the apple care team they told me to archive and install and check permissions to no avail, spoke to them again to day and the guy just said to re-install os x, don't really want to be doing that as I don't feel it will make any difference, have been reading on a few discussions and thought i would see if you could help, it seems tp happen when I am using skype or Ichat, I've been in contact with skype and they advised me to reinstall but there shouldn't have been a problem anyway and is not something that they have had reported, since re-installing there seems to be no problems but this was only this afternoon, I'm running os x with all the latest updates, and have no unusual third party software could someone please take a look at my panic log and see if they can help, thanks : )
