My macbook is Mac OS X version 10.6.8, how to I update it for a better version so i can get the icloud?

I'm trying to update my Macbook, but its not really updating. How can I updat it to a better version like OS X Lion , OS X Mavericks v10.9 or later.
So I can actually get the icloud on my settings and start using it?
Thank u very much

First you need to read the system requirements for each OS you wish to upgrade to.  You need to determine if your MBP meet ALL of the requirements.

I have a macbook OS X Version 10.4.11 how do I update to the new version

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.
If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, follow the Core Duo instructions, open the Mac App Store, and try purchasing Mountain Lion. If you get told it's incompatible, phone the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion; a regular MacBook(not MacBook Pro) which shipped with 10.4.11 or earlier is incapable of running 10.8.

  • HT1338 Can anyone tell me how to find what OS I'm using on the Mac? Tiger or Leopard? Also, how do I update from 10.6.8 to the latest version?

Can anyone tell me how to find what OS I'm using on the Mac?
    Tiger or Leopard?
Also, how do I update from 10.6.8 to the latest version?

Go to the Apple menu and select "About This Mac". You will get a window similar to this one -
You current OS X version number will be shown as I've marked.
OS X 10.4.x is Tiger, 10.5.x is Leopard, 10.6.x is Snow Leopard, 10.7.x is Lion, and 10.8.x is Mountain Lion.
Whether or not you can go to the latest OS X version depends upon your hardware -
You will need to purchase the retail set for the OS X version you want; there is no pint in getting and installing any intermediate versions. Once the retail version has been installed, you can update it to the latest release for that version via download updater.

You need to go through 10.6.3 and 10.6.8 to get to 10.7 or 10.8. If you find that 10.6.8 isn't enough, open the Mac App Store and try purchasing Mountain Lion 10.8. If you get told it's incompatible, choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU with at least 2GB of RAM, and if it does, phone the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.

You can either use Office for Mac 2011 or use Boot Camp to run Windows or use a VM, such as Parallels Desktop to run Windows. Running Windows, you'd be able to use MS Office for Windows.

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

  • Regarding new Reminder app in Mountain Lion:  is there a away to sort reminders by due date in the same fashion you can in the iCloud version of Reminders?

Regarding new Reminder app in Mountain Lion:  is there a way to sort reminders in due date order in the same fashion as you can in the iCloud version of Reminders?

So true! I have to agree: "It appears Reminders in 10.8 did not get a whole lot of thought put into it regarding how folks actually use reminders."
With Mountain Lion, Reminders no longer resembles a task-management (to-do) app in any way. I used to be able to limp along using it for my to-dos (although it never did accommodate this need well). This upgrade has made Reminders completely unusable for task management.
Once I got over my disappointment, I did some research and decided to try "Things." This application has all the functionality I've been wanting all along. It has a Mac version, an iPhone version, and an iPad version (among others)--and it keeps all devices synched via the Cloud (just not the iCloud ... but who needs the i ?). I wish I'd discovered it years ago. I'm glad now that Mountain Lion put Reminders over the edge; otherwise, I would not have made this discovery.
"Things" (oddly named though it is) comes close to the old Franklin planner software I used to love and haven't been able to find a substitute for. It can import items from Reminders, and it works with Siri. It's a joy to use, and it does everything I want it to do plus some things I never thought of and will use all the time. I downloaded the free trial version last night and within an hour paid for it with gratitude.

This is a scam. Do not phone these people, at best they will charge you for unnecessary 'cleaning' and at worst they will gain access to your Mac and steal your data. You've probably managed to install some 'adware' which is producing this fake warning. 'Adwaremedic' should remove it and is safe to use - please see

  • I just purchased a mac air, i heard i can get the LIONS for free, is this free

I just purchased a mac air 1 week ago, i was told my bestbuy sales person that i can get the free download to LIONS in july, is this true? or should i just return the macbook air and waite for july.
    thanks.
this is the first mac for me ever, so far i love it.

Yes, that's correct. Keep your receipt and the box to prove date of purchase.
There is a rumor that Apple will release a new MBA model concurrent with the release of Lion. If you return yours within 14 days you can get your money refunded (less restocking fee.) Then wait for the new model since it may show up in another month or so. Bear in mind that a new MBA in July is just a rumor.

  • I am currently running OS X version 10.5.8 how did I update to Mountain Lion

I am currently running OS X version 10.5.8 how did I update to the current version of Mountain Lion?

Lion and Mountain Lion are largely sold by download through the Mac App Store.
In order to download, you need 10.6.6 or better. You can arrange to purchase a 10.6 DVD, which can then be updated to 10.6.6 or 10.6.8, by CALLing the Apple Online Store. It cannot be ordered over the Internet.
If you prefer, they were selling a 10.7 thumb drive, which may also be available over the phone ONLY.
You must have a Mac Pro 65lb tower from 2008 or later to run 10.8 Mountain Lion.

I am experiencing some major problems with my MacBook Pro. I have had some issues with it turning on/off at random times, but today, when starting, I get the grey start-up screen and a recovery bar. After filling in approx 1/4 of the way, the machine dies. After starting it in recovery mode, it will not allow me to download OS X Mavericks- it says the disk is locked. Any ideas? I do not have a back-up and do not want to erase everything before I have explored my options. Help?

try forcing internet recover, hold 3 keys - command, option, r - you should see a spinning globe
most people will tell you to do both pram and smc resets (google) and if you still have issues, either clean install (easy) or troubleshoot (hard)

Copy the music from Nano to computer by:
Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device: Apple Support Communities
Then just sync to the new device

What kind of use do you make of your MBP?  A lot of photo or video?  If so, you may be storing a lot of large files.  Look at Finder and see what the file system looks like.  Do you have large libraries of data files associated with applications?
You may want to think about an external hard drive to use for backups and data storage, you can point applications to the external drive as the default storage location.
A good source of external drives at a reasonable price is the Mac specialist, OWC, http://www.macsales.com
I bought their Mercury Elite Pro 2 TB dirve last September and set it up to use part for Time Machine backup and part for other work space.  Setup with Disk utility into two partitions is very quick and easy.  Just remember to format as Extended Journaled with GUID partition table.  Setting the partition sizes is by using a braphical image on screen in DU so it is like falling off a log, so easy.
