I see you're running Yosemite 10.10. You're right at the minimum requirements for RAM.
My general rule is to stay away from any new OS until all the bugs are out of it.
Re:
OS X Yosemite
EntreCheck notes the RAM problem as well as a lot of startup items and system launch.

My Macbook is running really slow - help (Etrecheck report included)
I have a Macbook Pro, and it runs insanely slow. Trying to do something simple like surfing the net and listening to Itunes generally results in the spinning wheel coming up after every clicked link. Excel will cause a 45 second spinning wheel when doing something simple like =2+2. I don't use this machine for anything too complicated and I'm just finding it runs extraordinarily slow. Any advice is welcome.

It is a long holiday weekend for many helpers here so responses will be slower---happens every major holiday. Lots of people traveling and not checking in.
Your first major problem is that you have AVG anti-virus installed. Such pieces of dreck do not offer enough protection to justify the performance problems they cause.
If you no longer use a Blackberry device, uninstall the many support files for it that are eating resources.

OS X 10.9.5 (13F34) - Uptime: 26 days 0:16:38
Try a restart every once in a while. That clears out a lot of crud that builds up.
The RAM usage results suggests that more RAM might help with your usage patterns. See how the computer behaves after restarting and evicting AGV, then we can judge whether you need more RAM. Your MBP can handle up to 16GB RAM and installation is a 10-15 minute job you can do at home.

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

My Computer and safari is running really slow. help please?
hi, if anyone can help me i would really appreciate. ok, my computer has been running very slowly for a while now. when i open up multiple pages of anything (mainly safari and word) or combinations of applications it loads slowly, runs slowly, and sometimes doesn't load at all. also, often when i am using safari, a unlock keychain popup comes up and asks for the "keychain password". i exit it once, but it pops up again a second time and i exit it a second time because i do not know what the passwords is. please help me.
HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
When a drive slows down check for available disk space.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. *Make sure you always have a minimum of 10% to 15% free disk space at all times.*
*For Keychain issues / Safari issues.*
Sounds like your Keychain preference file is corrupted. Locate this file:
com.apple.keychainaccess.plist
~/Library/Preferences. Move that file from your Preferences folder to the Trash.
If that doesn't help...
1) Quit Safari
2) Open Keychain Access. (Applications/Utilities) Find the "Safari AutoFill" item. Delete it.
3) Relaunch Safari. Next time it asks for authorization, click "Always Allow".
Try Safari Maintenance
And try using Open DNS Click the computer icon and follow the instructions.
Mac OS X: How to force background maintenance tasks (logs and temporary items)

I believe my macbook pro hard drive is bad. I erased the drive and reinstalled the OS and the macbook still runs really slow. I dont know if the hard drive is the issue.
Did you try an SMC reset too? It's easily done and none of those resets to the best of my knowledge hurt anything. When I was fooling with my system, which at one point was a home made Fusion setup, I needed to reset the SMC sometimes to get the drives recognized. Reading the documentation the sudden motion sensor is drive related but that seems to be about it.
Some more specifics may be needed about the drive itself, the model number of your unit, and the OS version you're running.
At present, the problem seems sort of odd to me. FWIW cable problems can be quite intermittent. I used Scannerz to find some of the problems on my original system that I later converted to a new HD and SSD combo. It can find lots of problems if you learn how to use it right (HD problems, logic board system faults, and cable problems) but you need to get a system at least partially up and running to use it, and it doesn't sound to me like your there right now (in other words, don't go out and buy it because at this point I don't know how it could help you)
Another word of advice would be to not go out and start throwing parts at a problem unless you have a good idea what the source of the problem is. If you have a logic board problem, new drives and new cables won't make it go away, you'll just be wasting your money. Logic board problems, cable problems, and drive problems can all have very similar end user symptoms. The article that I linked above named "Hard Drive Problems" has a section on general symptoms of problems and if you read the article it becomes clear there's a lot of overlap associated with different types of problems.
I assume that your unit isn't under warranty. If, by chance it is I wouldn't even fool with it and I'd take it to Apple and let them deal with the problem. You also might want to check with whatever Apple sources you have available to test your system, like an Apple store, and see how much they'll charge (if anything) to evaluate the system.
I certainly hope this helps. -
Macbook pro runs really slow after sleep mode
My MBP ( MacBook Pro (13-inch, medio 2012), 2,5 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB), runs very slow after sleep mode. I notice that when I wake it up, my memory usage is nearly 8 GB. After a restart it is back no a normal level, between 2 and 5 GB depending on how many programs I am running. Any ideas what causes this? My IOS is Yosemite 10.10.2
Kind regardsHi Japib
Thanks for your reply. Here is my report:

Macbook Pro running extremely slow, help?!
Of course, the curse of finals week strikes. As of a few days ago I woke up one morning and my computer started running really slow. It takes forever to restart, open tabs on the internet, switch between applications... everything. I always get the spinning wheel and it drives me insane. I have been reading a few posts, but I think it would be better to get some knowledge on what is actually wrong with my laptop. Any help is very much appreciated... coming from a stressed out college student!!!

My macbook is running really slow with most apps crashing
Hello everyone,
so recently my MacBook pro (mid 2012) is running incredibly slow, it's been a couple of weeks now and I don't really know what's going on, since it's always been pretty fast I've never had much issues until now.
Thank you very much!!
Beth

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left.

Mid 2009 MacBook Pro - Running really slow.
Hi,
I'm having problems with my mid 2009 MBP running really slowly. The problem seems to be the mds_stores Process using lots of CPU and memory. I have done the following to try and resolve it:
Uninstalled AV software (Avast)
Created new admin user and logged in with that accounts - it seem to run fine when logged in with that user!
Tried to re-index HD by adding and removing from Privacy section in Spotlight. Not sure if this actually worked
Removed a couple of other apps, e.g. Dropbox.
Updated to latest version of Yosemite (10.10.1)
Any help gratefully received!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -F '$Time $Message' -k Sender mdworker -o -k Message Rne Norm -k Sender mds | tail | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.
Step 2
Enter the following command as in Step 1 and post the output:
mdutil -as 2>&- | pbcopy
You can then quit Terminal.
Step 3
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Terminal. In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for crash reports related to Spotlight. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. A Spotlight crash report has a name beginning in "mds" or "mdworker" and ending in ".crash". Select the most recent such report, if any, from the System and User subcategories and post the entire contents—the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as hang logs—they're very long and not helpful. -
New MacBook Air running really slow?!?!
Hello everyone,
Im new here and I hope I will find some help.
I got A new MacBook Air ( 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5 ) before xmas, on the 20th of Dec 2014... everything was ok, Im not moving it from its table...
Since I got it, I find it really SLOW when browsing the net... my old one was like 5 years old, with an almost dead battery and it was working like it was new.... and my Bf's MacBook Pro is 2 years old and its working more than fine!
Is it me being unlucky with it ??? Is it Yosemite??
Do I have to go to have it checked ?
Thanks in advance.
OanaYou have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.
Try resetting PRAM, SMC and staring up in SafeMode.
Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18761
Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
Start up in Safe Mode. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18760
Best. -
MacbookPro started running really slow. Please help...

Thank you!1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

My Macbook has started running really slow, help!
Hello, my Macbook has started to run at a far slower pace than usual. I have had my macbook since December of 2010 and for the past few weeks I have noticed that the rainbow wheel would appear when I would try to do even the most simplest of things (i.g. open Microsoft Word). Using the terminal's top command I would notice that the fc-cache would use a high percent of the system. However that ceased using the command "fc-cache -f -r -v", and it seemed as if the font fc-cache stopped. However that did not stop the problem.
I then decided to run a EtreCheck run and the following came out:

If someone could please help that would be amazing.
Thank you very much!I'll take a wild guess that the most noticeable slowdown began after you installed OS X Mavericks.
1. You have plenty of hard disk space, 205GB available of 250GB, but you have only 2GB system RAM installed. 2GB RAM was adequate for acceptable performance using OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Technically, Apple specs say that OS X 10.9 Mavericks REQUIRES just 2GB RAM, but realistically, 2GB is not nearly enough to run it with decent performance, especially if you run both a browser and other application programs simultaneously. Your system can hold a maximum of 16GB RAM. Upgrading to 4GB RAM would absolutely help performance. Upgrading to 8GB might provide additional performance with OS X Mavericks. I won't speculate on the benefits of 16GB.
Disclaimer: I use OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion as my primary operating system, about 8 hours every day. I run Mavericks once a week or less for a couple of hours, and for only one application, so my experience with Mavericks is limited, and your use is likely considerably different. I use OS X Mavericks to run Windows 7 using Parallels 9, in order to use my licensed copy of Windows MS-Office 2011. I didn't like Windows 7 performance with Parallels 9 running in Mavericks with just 4GB installed on my mid-2011 2.5Ghz iMac, so I upgraded to 8GB.
Macs are notoriously picky about system RAM, and not all RAM vendors are the same when it comes to Mac. I recommend purchasing your Mac RAM upgrade from Apple, Crucial.com, or Other World Computing http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3_Whi te
Depending upon where you purchase the RAM and whether you are confident to install it yourself, a 4GB RAM upgrade will likely cost well under US$100. 8GB would likely cost around $100. Your Mac can use up to 16GB, at a cost over $200. Before spending any money to upgrade an older computer, always consider how much you're willing to spend on a 4-year-old computer, versus saving that money, if you have plans to purchase a new(er) Mac in the near future.
Recent generations of Mac computers seem to be highly reliable. My son has a mid-2009 aluminum MacBook Pro that easily survived 4 years of college and is still going strong. We just recently upgraded his system to 8GB RAM so he can try out Mavericks on a spare external drive before he decides whether or not to upgrade.
2. You're running Google Chrome browser. I don't use it based on advice in several discussion threads within Apple Support Communities from users who are far more knowledgable that I am about such things. They say the Chrome browser does not use RAM very efficiently, and that Firefox and Safari are better.
3. You haven't rebooted your computer in 34 days. With such limited RAM, until you upgrade, rebooting the computer at least every few days could increase performance a little bit. Some programs, particularly web browsers, often take huge amounts of available RAM and open dozens or even hundreds of links, then don't release RAM properly when you close browser windows. -
My MacBook is sluggish. Everything is up to date and it isn't my wifi because the other computers in the house run fine. Does anyone have any ideas to help performance?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
You don't mention which applications are running slow, or which MacBook you have.
Did you perform a recent upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or perhaps OS X 10.7 Lion?
Do you let your computer run 24x7? Be sure to reboot occasionally. There are also maintenance scripts that run processes like disk cleanup and spotlight indexing overnight when you leave your computer on 24x7. They will not run if you shut your computer down every night, and then must run during the daytime, slowing performance somewhat.
Is your hard disk nearly full? Less than 10% free space is not recommended, because the system slows down as the hard disk 'finds' free space.
Use Disk Utility to verify and/or repair permissions on your hard disk.
If your hard disk is going bad, that will also slow system performance as the drive retries multiple times to retrieve and save data.
Less than 2GB system RAM memory installed? Open Activity Monitor and check System Memory in the bar at the bottom of the screen. If Page outs and Swap used are in the Gigabyte range, it's a good indication that you need to purchase and install more system RAM memory. -
Macbook Pro suddenly very slow - Help please!
Hi everyone,
I have a 13in Macbook Pro and it has been doing well up until this week when everything I click forces me to go through the pinwheel for long amounts of time. This especially happens when minimizing, opening and closing new windows as well as using the four-finger gesture on my trackpad. I opened Activity Monitor and the CPU usage looks fine - Google Chrome is the largest %CPU used at 8%. Under "System Memory", it shows that Page outs is 507GB and Page in is 27 GB.
Is there any other information necessary to determine what I can do to fix this?
A quick reply would be VERY appreciated. ThanksIt appears your MacBook Pro is suffering from a dearth of RAM for the programs you are using, but more information is required for a definitive conclusion. Read: Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory and determine how much RAM is being used
Google Chrome runs poorly on a Mac and may be responsible for devouring your Mac's available resources. Until Google figures out how to develop for OS X don't use it.
To purchase memory go to Crucial and download the little app that examines your system and recommends RAM upgrade options. Their prices are good but don't have to buy memory from them - determine what you need and buy it from Crucial or OWC / MacSales. Avoid purchasing memory from PC vendors because the Mac is intolerant of memory that does not meet its stringent specifications. -
Can someone please help. I have a really old MacBook that is running really slow. I want to wipe everything and reinstall the latest software but don't know how to do this. Also is there a way of keeping Microsoft Office when doing this? Thanks in advance
You do realise that wiping the disk means that everything on the disk is erased. Everything. Photos, music, emails, ...
So the first piece of advice is to make sure you have a back up of everything.
You need the OS disk to reintsall the operating system. You will use that disk first to erase the drive, then to reinstall the OS.
Here's the link for the US. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
As for MS Office, you will need the original disk that it came on to reinstall it.
