My MacBook is self-assigning its IP address (and won't let it go)

My MacBook is generally well-behaved, but at times (seemingly random times), it self-assigns an IP address when it should be getting one from a router. The problem is sporadic and occurs in two separate locations - home (where I have control of the wireless router) and school (where I have no control over the router).
Sometimes I come home from school, and I have no problem connecting to my WLAN (2Wire router). Sometimes, however, I get the dreaded "self-assigned IP address" message, and I cannot thereafter get an "un-self-assigned" IP address. I have tried renewing the DHCP lease - no luck. I have tried trashing com.apple.airport.preferences.plist, and although that has worked on occasion, usually it doesn't solve the problem. Even more maddening is that rebooting doesn't help. Nothing consistently solves the problem - and that is so much more annoying than the problem itself!
At school I have this same problem and more. The school network SSID is not broadcast, so AirPort seems not to be able to remember it. Every single time, despite the fact that I've asked it to "remember this network," I have to type in the SSID and WEP in order to join the network. Sometimes it works quickly, and sometimes it won't work for a while, and other times it self-assigns an IP address. (ARGH!) And then I have to try the hit-and-miss "solutions" that work sporadically at home, which work equally unreliably at school.
Can I make it STOP self-assigning an IP address when it thinks it can't get one from the network? Part of the problem seems to be that the AirPort does not to want to give up its IP address after it has self-assigned. Is there an equivalent to the DOS command ipconfig /release that I could type from a terminal window? (It has been a while since I used UNIX.)
There are many things I like about my new Mac (I was a UNIX user in grad school and then had to use a PC at work, so I am a newbie to Mac OS), but this problem is totally unacceptable for a computer that is supposed to be so much better than a Windows-based machine. At least in Windows I knew how to troubleshoot problems - here I am completely helpless! And I CANNOT believe Apple has not fixed this, because from what I can tell by looking on the web (when I can actually get a real IP address), people have had the problem for at least FOUR YEARS!!!!!!
Please help - I am desperate! Thank you in advance.

Have you tried making a New Location for each yet? The Automatic one get confused easily.
Some "nix" to try when it happens also...
sudo ipconfig set en1 BOOTP;sudo ipconfig set en1 DHCP
sudo ifconfig en1 down;sudo ifconfig en1 up
Sometimes having an all OFF Location can help, thanks to Gnarlodious...

  • MacBook Airport card has lost its IP address and won't connect to my network

The Airport card on my MacBook has lost its IP address and will not connect to my network. It worked fine until about two or three days ago. Network Diagnostics says that the Airport now has a self-assigned IP number and will not connect to the Internet. I can't find any info anywhere that tells me how to restore the IP number, and I don't get how it can have a self-assigned number and not connect. I have AT&T U-Verse, and my iMac desktop and two iPhone 4s connect with little difficulty. The MacBook is three years old, and AppleCare just expired two months ago. I'm still running 10.6.8 on both machines. I found an article saying that sometimes DHCP leases expire, but my desktop still works ifne, and I've had both connected to the same network since the same time. The artcicle said that more than one machine can share an IP address, so I wanted to try to enter the desktop IP address into the laptop, but I can't find a way to do so, either. Any thoughts?

  • After migrating an account to my MacBook Air, it still has its old settings and won't let me find the Applications folder - how do I fix this?

So I just migrated (using the Assistant) my Admin account from my old Powerbook G4 to my MacBook Air (used) , but now it's disregarding its new Trackpad settings (such as scrolling and double finger tapping, etc.) It also won't let me find my Applications folder (I used Finder), whereas the Admin account can, but see back on my old laptop I this account was an Admin. I feel like there's something written that's telling it to behave like it did on the Powerbook. I don't know - me no professional, yo, that's why I'm here. NOTE: Before I migrated, I'd started using the Admin account on here; for example, I signed in with my appleid since I figured the accounts could be merged - guess not. A family member's been helping me, but I wanted feedback from the forum.
    Thanks, guys!

What exactly is the error you get?
How are you attempting this copy?
There's almost certainly a way to accomplish what you want to do (probably best from the terminal possibly copying the entire user dir and fixing up permissions, etc.) but I'm not sure you will end up with the results you want.  There are plists in the preferences dir that you probably don't want to copy over (e.g., many of the com.apple.* prefererences).  And many apps also create more than just plists.  There may be stuff in Application Support, LaunchAgents, Internet Plug-Ins, etc.).  And this would be stuff you do want to copy.  Bottom line is it is not a trivial exercise which is probably why the system is slapping your hands for even attempting it

  • TS1317 Self assigned IP adress on G5 won't let me connect to internet.

I received a G5 mac tower version 10.3.2. When I try to connect to the internet it won't let me and says that it already has an assigned IP address. I have tried many tips from multiple forms with changing it manually, $ infront of the password, nothing works. I have restarted my router multiple times and still nothing. Any help would be great! Thank you.

As you seem to want to replace broken Windows XP with a Linux distro, please allow me to suggest [[http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc]] that could help you select the right one according to your needs.
Most if not all distros allow you to download CD images that you can use.
You can do all this on one of the laptops that have connectivity.
Hope this helps, if not please get back with any further questions you might have.

  • How do I change the iCloud account login?  It is set on my old email address and won't let me do anything to it.

I can’t login to iCloud because I changed my email address several months ago.  I changed my address with iCloud as well, but when I try to login with my phone it prompts me with the old email address.  Since my password and old email address do not represent a valid account anymore I cannot login.  My iPhone will not let me change the email address associated with the iTunes account.  How do I fix this?

    Content and Apple IDs -
Content is forever tied to the Apple ID that bought it. Apple does not transfer content from one Apple ID to another. Apple does not merge Apple IDs. You will never be able to access your content bought with another Apple ID with a new Apple ID.

  • Why does my computer self-assign an IP address whenever I rest the network?

All of a sudden both my wife's and my MacBook Pro dropped their internet connections (Verizon FIOS).  I spent a long time with the Verizon tech person and he suggested that I post here.
My computer is running Mountain Lion and my wife's is running Lion.
    Thanks.
    Jon

Rest the network? Why would you do that?  It's not like it builds up lactic acid. Actually turning electrical devices on/off can actually degrade performance/reliability over time.
When MacOS loses connection with the network it will self-assign an IP address.. see above.  Turn the network back on, and I suspect it reconnects. No?
If you recently upgraded to M/L I suggest you go into System Preferences/Network, delete the Wifi service ("-") and then recreate it ("+").  Do the same with the Ethernet service connection. Also, use WPA2 for router/network security.
    Then repair permissions.
BTW, I use Verizon FIOS and experience no problems.

  • Upgraded to Maverick. Now cannot connect to wifi. All my other devices will connect. Have rest wireless hot spot switch and cable modem. Other devices still connect but MacPro does not. MacPro wireless is self assigning an IP address blocking access.

MacPro wireless is self assigning an IP address blocking access. It will connect if I connect to my iPhone hot spot via wifi. Any ideas?

If you follow this video you'll see how to delete your WiFi AP from the OS, this will allow you to select it again which I feel will correct your problem.

I just install Lion hardwired through my ethernet port, but when I try to use the WiFi connection it assigns it's own IP address and won't connect.  I did the exact same process with my other iMac and had no issues.
Any idea what can be causing this problem?

Okay, problem resolved.  I rebooted my entire ATT Uverse system and the computer instantly picked up the connection.
