My macbook is suddenly getting MUCH hotter.

I purchased my RMBP July 14, and in the past week it has been getting MUCH hotter. When I first got it, the enclosure was cool to the touch even while watching 1080p youtube videos or ripped blu-rays. The only time it actually was extremely hot was when doing something graphics intensive.
Lately, even while just having it idle on the desktop, it gets extremely hot to the touch. Right now I'm downloading something through the Thunderbolt/Ethernet adapter and the computer is extremely hot to the touch, like if I was playing a game. This is not normal at all.
I downloaded iStat and it tells me my cpu temp is 79/80 C and GPU temp is at 60C, GPU would be normal but the CPU is too hot for just downloading a program. The other thing is the fans are working at the minimum for this heat, they won't speed up. So it could be that the fan control is not working correctly. Or maybe it is stuck on using the 650M instead of switching to the HD4000.
Is there any way I could fix this temperature issue myself? I would like to Avoid going to the apple store.

Beter to take it in, this way you have one strike added to your three strikes and they will do something about it by then, like give you a replacment machine.

I have lightroom 5.7 and a macbook pro 10.9.5.  Occasionally when I am editing a photo in the develop module, I suddenly get a "file not found" message and the editing ceases to work.  There is no "exclamation" icon below the histogram box in the Library module or on the photo in grid view, and the histogram is gone.  What is going on? Trying to find it using the "find missing photos" in the library menu does nothing.

  • Macbook Pro suddenly will not connect to the internet via ethernet cable.

I know this is a long shot... but I figured I would give it a try.
My macbook pro suddenly does not connect to the internet via ethernet cable. Please bear with me, as I am not very tech-savvy - I will try my best to describe the symptoms!
I connect to the internet via ethernet (we don't have wifi). It was working before I went to work, and when I came home I suddenly couldn't get anything to work (I know everyone says this, but I truly didn't mess with anything). Internet browsers just think for awhile and then turn up the 'You are not connected to the internet' error.
I went into my network preferences and curiously, the 'Ethernet' shows a green dot and says 'connected'. However it says 'Authentication server is not responding' underneath the last part that says '802.1X: WPA: eduroam' (I think that is my user profile).
When I go into my 'security' settings I can see that my firewall is off, so that shouldn't be causing any problems.
I've tried restarting the router and computer itself many times. Diagnostics just gets to a certain point and reports back 'Network Diagnostics cannot fix the current networking problems.' I've also tried switching to a different ethernet cable, and I tried both cables out on a PC laptop and it connected without issue.  Additionally, I brought my macbook along to a friend's house and it connected to his wifi just fine, so the problem appears to just be with ethernet connections.
I know it's hard to troubleshoot this kind of thing without being there and having a look at the computer yourself, but any tips wouild be greatly appreciated.

As I mentioned above, I am not very tech savvy so I have no idea why a wireless protocol would be showing up there, I'm just listing everything I see in hopes that someone might know something I can try. This is why I am asking for help here - I'm not sure what has happened that has made me unable to connect, especially since it seemingly occured while nobody was using the computer.
I guess I should clarify that I'm not a total hillbilly- normally my firewall is set to 'on', but I set it to 'off' to try and troubleshoot the issues here as I was told that sometimes it can interfere with the computer's ability to connect to the internet. If this is not the case and firewall does not affect anything, I will turn it back on while I try to fix this.
I have tried the method you mentioned above a few times - I actually contacted my ISP earlier this week and they recommended resetting the router like that. They didn't mention any known network issues.

  • I upload all of my photos from my iphone 5 onto my macbook air to get more space on my phone, and now whenver i try to upload it says there is no more storage or there was a problem transferring a picture. what can I do to get more space onto my iphoto?

i upload all of my photos from my iphone 5 onto my macbook air to get more space on my phone, and now whenver i try to upload it says there is no more storage or there was a problem transferring a picture. what can I do to get more space onto my iphoto? I've tried putting the pictures on flashdrives, but iphoto would no tlet me transfer.

I don't know how large the SSD (solid state hard drive) is, or how big your iPhone 5 is, but with some iPhones having 64GB and some Airs having as little as 64GB and some having as much as 512GB it's not hard to see how storing the contents of your iPhone 5 on your Macbook Air could run you out of space.
Go to the Macbook Air and bring up a finder window and pull the Go menu down and go to the Computer. Right click on the Macintosh HD and select get info. See if there is any available space on the MacBook Air. If not you are out of SSD space (you're storing more on your Macbook Air than it has storage for). I'm not sure if iTunes can store its library on an external hard drive or quite how you would make that happen. But even if you managed that, when the hard drive was disconnected, you would lose access to your library. Using a smart media card might be possible (I don't know) but it would probably be irritatingly slow. If you have a small Air and a big iPhone you might just have to find a different computer to sync to. Just remember a 64GB iPhone is a big chunk of SSD for a Macbook Air. I did it with my previous and my current Air but even my previous one had 256GB and I really just fit.

  • My Macbook Pro suddenly became really slow

3 Days ago my Macbook Pro suddenly became really slow. I can't run anything without my computer freezing. I've had my Macbook Pro since mid-2012 (21 months). The first thing i did was check my activity monitor, which said that I was apparently using 4 GB (half) of my Macbook Pro's RAM, even though nothing was running. The process that was using the most RAM was kernal.task, which was only around 600mb of RAM. All the processes RAM amounts only added up to around 1 GB,  not four. I can't even open safari without my computer freezing. The amount of RAM being "used" on my computer slowly started to increase, even though nothing was running, until it got to all 8 GB being used. When i restart my computer, it goes back to 4 GB and starts to rise again. My processor, on the other hand, is doing nothing. Its acting normally. How do i get my computer back to its usual performance?
    Hardware Specifications
    13-inch Mid-2012 Macbook Pro
Processor: 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
    750 GB HDD
    OS X 10.9.2

Since you are using Mavericks OS, the amount of RAM being used is inconsequential but the 'pressure' is.  If green is showing then the RAM usage is normal.  This is a change fro prior OSX's.
The usual problem will lie with the HDD,  It may be too full or needs to be repaired or replaced.  Go into OSX recovery and select from the 4 option menu Disk Utility.  Choose First Aid and run Verify and Repair.
(Start the MBP with the OPTION key down and select the recovery partition)
If that does not solve the problem, try a safe boot:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
If the MBP responds 'normally' that usually indicates that there is a third part application that is causing the problem.  They have to bedeleted and reinstalled in a systematic way so that you can identify the culprit.
    Ciao.

  • My MacBook Pro suddenly became very slow, cursor responding slowely

My MacBook Pro suddenly became very slow, cursor responding slowely

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

The monitor of my MacBook Pro suddenly became all black, I tried to reset but it did not work, what should I do? Why does this happen?

I advise to reply to the one you want to reply to.
You have had good information here. I will not repeat that here.
    I would like to add:
you have incompatible software: start in SafeMode, read Woodmeister and see if it is free of issues.
Akamai is crap software needed or not, Huawei the same.
It is very possible that the keygenerator you used for generating a key for some softwares has infected your mac.
The non-regular software with the false key(s) are not compatible probably or generate malware. Luckily you can not update them automatically because the keygenerator blocked the software for contacting the developer... I propose to consider getting rid of those softwares by really good uninstalling.
You have a beautiful mac, don't degenerate it with crapped software. There are alternatives for expensive software, for example Adobe Photoshop has a free alternative (with a less beautiful interface) in GIMP. And so on.

  • After 10.6.7 (special MBP) update, MBP (early 2011) running much hotter

After installing the 10.6.7 MacBook Pro special updater, I note that my MBP is now running much hotter -- on the order of 20 to 30 degrees F (was running usually around 100 to 110 under load, now running 130 to 140 with just Safari open).
In Activity Monitor, nothing is using a lot of CPU % but I have one kernel task mopping up 78 threads and 515.9 MB of memory (consistent over at least the last 20 minutes as I check back on it). Parent process is noted simply as "kernel task (0)".
I've done a few restarts and some usual housekeeping -- any clues as to what's up and how I can see exactly what this process is?

I have a late 2009 MBP and I have noticed that just surfing the internet has caused the machine to run 20-30 degrees hotter. It used to hover around 40C (according to iStat...obviously it would climb under a load) when I was bumming around the net (no videos) and now it is anywhere between 60-70C doing the same stuff. I didn't really notice it till the other day when all I was doing was working on some bash scripts so at that point it was under very little load and it just seemed quite warm.

Normal restarting doesn't work - it's slow as it was before (I need to wait long time to turn in ON again). Yesterday I decided to restart the SMC (Control+Option+Shift+Power Button) and after restarting Macbook it was OK again for another 1h.
    I've already tried:
    - cleaning with Clean my Mac 2
    - scan with ClamXav
    - restarting SMC

I'm updating OS X right now (downloading).

  • My Macbook Pro suddenly won't read my hard drive.

My Macbook Pro suddenly won't read my 750GB WD Elements Hard drive.
It was working earlier today but when I went to press play on my TV show in VLC it said the files couldn't be read. So i reopended them all and they still didn't work. I closed down all programs running that could possibly be using my hard drive but it said it was being used so I force ejected it and when I plugged it back in it didn't work.
It comes up with an error message "this disk can't be read by this computer" but it still shows up in disk utility. In disk utility though it says it is a 2.2TB hard drive which confuses me. also I the buttons for "verify disk" and "repair disk" are greyed out.
Is there something that I can do to try and get my hard drive working again?

If I'm not mistaken, this drive is bus-powered. MBPs seem to have frequent problems with bus-powered drives, probably because they don't provide enough power on the USB bus.

It is possible that the drive or USB interface are damaged. However, it is too early to decide. You need to connect the drive to a desktop machine (Mac or PC), or provide more power to the drive (with a power supply, if the drive accepts it, or a USB Y-cable and a USB power supply, rated 1A or more).

Do you get any error message whilst trying to open a particular eBay page or do you get a blank page, a spinning beachball or what? Does this happen with all eBay pages or just one page?
If you'll post the url to a particular page, we can check and see if we have any problems accessing the page.

  • Why am I suddenly getting a "Dropped Frames" error?

    Hi,
For two years I was working on a large project in FCP 6 where I was able to do quite a bit of work without ever getting "dropped frames." Recently I deleted this entire project and loaded footage for a MUCH smaller project. This current project is MUCH less demanding. Fewer effects, fewer timelines to work with. Same exact system. Nothing has changed... except now... the mos rudimentary effects will give me dropped-frames upon playback. I know I can toggle a playback settings but how in the world is this suddenly necessary with a project that is 5% as demanding as my previous project??
In particular, the dropped-frames occur when I'm...
    * generating basic text and adding a fade to the text
    * cropping part of one shot
    The specs are the following:
    + MacPro 2.8gb 8-core, 16gb RAM, Mac OS X 10.5.4, four internal hard drives at 500gb each
+ My OS and the FCP program are on Drive 1
+ My audio is on Drive 2
+ My visuals are on Drive 3
+ My FCP file and the render files are on Drive 4
+ The project itself is using footage from a Sony EX1 camera. I'm using audio from AIFF files. The progrmam is 2 minutes in duration. I'm using very little effects at all. 1 track of video. Four tracks of audio.
What's going? Why am I now, with this new/smaller project, suddenly getting dropped frames? Was the deletion process the culprit? What can I do?
    Thanks,
    Shanked

Download and run the demo version of iDefrag : http://www.coriolis-systems.com/iDefrag.php
Click the drive in question wait for it to build the map then switch to the tab labelled "Files" at the bottom of the window. Sort by #Fragments and the highest will be likely culprits. If you do buy this software change the algorithm to "Optimize" for best results for video. Run it using default settings for the rest of it.
For anyone else reading this I DO NOT recommend using defrag tools on the system drive or a RAID drive. This WILL make things worse for you. Only for use on single drive scenarios. The best way to defrag a RAID array is to move the files off to another drive, wipe the RAID clean then transfer the files back again (You can do this for any file system to improve performance). This will sort the files out again. OSX manages the rest until there is only 10% of your drive left (depending on how much deleting and writing of files happens in between - it's that which cause fragmentation).
In terms of the 'size' issue (which you have no real issue with) I guessed that you meant the duration and complexity of your sequences. It's true that sometimes if you have a lot of sequences open these will use up valuable RAM (as FCP is only 32bit it can only utilize 3GB of RAM at most) and so when it is trying to buffer, cache and output the video it can trip over itself.  But your current problem is definitely down to dataflow off the drive and into FCP in time to decode and display the next frame. If it can't do it in time (within 0.03-0.04 seconds) then if detects an error and because you are in SafeRT mode it stops playback and displays the Dropped Frame error window.

  • Suddenly getting "Unsupported Image Format" throughout library

What happened? I have lots of projects, with Nikon D3x, and I'm suddenly getting this message, along with the maroon background.
I tried regenerating library, that didn't solve it. I tried using Quick Preview, that didn't solve it.
    What could be doing this?

Also this is happening on my Mac Pro with Snow Leopard. Quad core Nehalem model, 32 GB memory, 4x2GB Drives with Apple RAID card, ATI Radeon gfx card.
    my MacBook Pro works fine.

The first step is to check and see how much space really is there.  From the desktop right click on the drive in the upper right corner (at least it's there by default) and select "Get Info" to see how much space it reports as free.
It's not just media files that eat up disk space, though they are often a major contributor.  Do you happen to be running one of the virtual machine programs (Parallels or VMWare Fusion)?  When you create a guest drive there you normally have a fairly decent amount of disk space dedicated to it and that can fill the drive.
As well, a quick fix that may buy you some time is to empty the trash if you've not done so recently.  Click on the trash folder in your dock and then in the window that comes up select the option to empty the trash.
If you can free up some space, there are programs that will help you find what files and directories are using disk space.  I've used Space Gremlin (in the App store) for that sort of thing, though there others.  If you run that sort of utlity you'll get some idea about what is really eating up the drive space.
