My MacBook Just shuts off...

My MacBook will just shut off for no reason when i am doing work and such. I did a virus scan and all and found nothing. What is going on and why would it do this? Is there anyway to fix it?
Please Help...
August

I had the same problem with my Macbook. There appears to have been an issue with the original design of the heat sink for the microprocessor. I sent my Macbook in for repair a couple of weeks ago, and Apple replaced the heat sink. The Macbook has been working well since the repair.
Either call Applecare, or take it into an Authorized Apple store/repair center. In either case, it will need to go in for repair.
My repair took about a week (heatsink was on backorder). I've had other repair work done by Apple (other computers I've owned). Excluding the wait for the backordered Heatsink, My experience has been a turn-around time (excluding shipping) of < 48hours.
p.s. Be sure to discuss any other issues you may be having at the time you schedule service. My Macbook also had the discoloration issue where my hands rested on the case during typing (known issue with early MacBooks). Both issues were addressed during the repair.

My macbook just shut iff and will not turn back on, connected to the charger. HELP!

Hi there,... what color is the charge indicator on the charger connector? orange or green.
Did you let your Air die from power?  Or has it been stored away for a while on a very low charge?
What happens when you try to power on? nothing?
If you cannot get to recovery mode and cannot power on at all, then its time for a service call to Apple for in shop full diagnosis and possible repair.

    Issue #1 >
When not plugged in to the power adapter, it shuts off on its own sometimes after 5 minutes, and sometimes after 40 minutes... it varies. Battery percentage is always showing. (It's not one of those issues where it only works with the power adapter...) When it's plugged in or not, the battery tester on the side always says it's full... until it shuts off and then only one dot is lit. I would love to think I just need a new battery, but I'm confused because it always supposedly holds a good charge percentage wise until it decides to turn off when it's not plugged in...
    Issue #2 >
Track Pad acts shady sometimes... most of the time it will work fine all around, but after a bit it will only click on the bottom right hand corner...
    >>>> I bought this laptop from a friend, and according to him it was never dropped or ever had any liquid damage. It does not have Apple Care, so I'm praying that it's not a Logic Board issue and a somewhat an easy fix along the lines of getting a new battery and Track Pad... hopefully. This is the only info I can offer, and hopefully you guys can understand whats going on. Feel free to ask any question and I will answer as much as I can. Thank you for your time and help

  • My Macbook Pro just shuts off.....not very happy

I got my 17" MBP a week ago Saturday. Everything was fine for almost a week. Friday it shut odwn on me three times. I called Apple Care and they walked me through a series of steps that supposedly would take care of the problem: remove the battery, press and hold ctrloptionR, while turning the computer on and pressing 'P' (I think). It seemed to do the trick, as I had no problems until today.
This morning it would start up, I'd be on it for a few minutes and it would just shut off. It did this about four or five times. Then this evening - it has done it twice. It just goes black and shuts down.
My settings for sleep are set correctly, my battery is charged correctly - this is just very upsetting.
I didn't think Macs did stuff like this. I had so many problems with PC's and laptops over the years, I was hoping I had escaped some of this.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Does anyone know WHY this would happen?
I'm calling Apple Care tomorrow and getting to the bottom of this. I want a reason/solution or a new MB.
    Thanks for your help!

Hi. I just did the update over the weekend. I had my MacBook pro (1st Gen) just shut down and didn't think much of it after about an hour of use. I put the charger on it for a couple days and left today on a business trip. I assume I had a full charge. I got about one third through a movie while flying. usually with the right settings I can get a movie and some work done. Anyway the machine just shut down. It would not reboot. It would try but fail like it had not enough power to complete the boot. The interesting thing is when I press the battery indicater button on the back it was showing four green lights which is about right given the amount of the movie I got through. Three hours later in Toronto it boots like nothing was ever wrong. However after about 5 mins it just shut itself down again. Wait a half hour it will do the same thing the battery shows about an hour remaining at this point but it won't stay running. I don't think the battery needs to be calibrated I mean it shows what looks to be the right time remaining when it does boot. Also I didn't even get 40 mins out of it after a fresh charge? I am like everyone else here hoping for an answer. I was going to go buy a new battery but I hit the boards first and it looks like that might not be the answer. Just thought I would give my experience in case it helps someone out there find a fix and the more that make apple aware of this problem the better.
    Cheers

  • Why did my black macbook 2006 just shut off while gaming. it wont turn back on and the battery shows no charge when indeed it was charging

Black macbook just shut down while playing warcraft 3. It wont turn back on and has no charge on the battery ( it was charging just fine). Any ideas?

This can be caused by faulty battery. Make Genius reservation and take the iPhone to Apple Store for free quick battery diagnostic testing.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro shut off when I close it?

When I am done using my MacBook Pro I would usually just shut the lid and the MacBook would then go into sleep mode. In other words later when I pick it up and open it the MacBook screen will light and I can begin using it immediately. However, lately when I shut the lid the MacBook will shut off completely and I will need to push the power button to turn it on again. I am curious as to what may be causing this? Any help or knowledge on this would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Reset your SMC, as described here:

  • Issues With MacBook Pro Shutting Off

I have been having troubles the past couple of days with my MacBook Pro shutting off when running on battery power.
MacBook Pro OSX 10.4.11. 2.16 Intel Core Duo. 1 G Ram.
I will have plenty of battery charge and then "poof", computer just goes black and has no power. It does turn back on, but gets annoying. Everything runs fine when plugged into the wall.
Anyone have any ideas of what may be causing this?
    Thanks.

How old is your machine? This sort of thing is covered under warranty (or apple car). I got a new one about a year ago that way. Apple WILL ask for number of charge cycles. Believe it or not, high numbers can be good because it says that you have actually been using the battery and it's not just dead from sitting unused.
It sounds like you have a dead cell. Your battery is separated into several compartments. Your charge looks fine until that cell is actually needed. At that point, CLUNK. Nothing works.

  • Installed new battery, but macbook still shuts off

So I just installed a new battery in my macbook pro after the last one  died after about 800 cycles.  Before it died I could still use it with  the AC cord plugged in, but if unplugged the computer would turn off.  After I installed the new battery i'm still having the same problems.
I don't understand what's happening because when I check the battery  status it says it's fully charged with a cycle count of 74 and the  battery condition is normal.
When the AC cord is unplugged the macbook will shut off, sometimes  when i plug it back in it will start right back where I left it prior to  unplugging it, but other times it will just do a full restart. When I  press the battery indicator (unplugged) to check the battery life  nothing happens.
I've already tried resetting the SMC, although I'm not sure if i'm  doing it right, because the light on the AC cord doesn't change when I  hold shift+ctrl+option+power. If anyone could help me out It'd be  greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

I suspect that eBay battery was very inexpensive.  There are many tales of woe on these forums of users who have purchase third party batteries for their MBPs and have found them wanting.  The vendor will tell you that the battery is a 'genuine replacement' battery, but in fact it is not.
The appropriate solution is to have a replacement battery installed by Apple which will have a warranty.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook Pro shutting off when closed - Mountain Lion

Just upgraded to Mountain Lion and now my macbook pro shuts off instead of sleeps everytime i close the screen and needs to be re-booted when screen is re-opened. Any one had the same issue and any known fixes?

Check System Preferences --> Energy Saver and make sure you do not have the sleep sliders set to "Never".
This may pertain to either or both Battery and/or Power Adapter tabs in System Preferences.

  • MacBook Pro shutting off with battery charged

I have a MacBook Pro I purchased about 22 months ago. About seven days ago, I started noticing the computer just shutting off without warning, even with a charge of 20% or more. Using Coconutbattery my batter still has 62% of it's original capacity with 367 load-cycles. Battery life isn't great, so I was considering buying a new battery, I'd just like to know if other's experience this, and would a new battery solve the problem.
There are no other problems with the machine.

  • My MacBook Pro shuts off and then Internet won't work!

Okay so my MacBook Pro used to work perfect but then one day it just shut off then didn't turn back on for like 10 mins! And my charger didn't work so I figured I just had to unplug the middle part! But when I start it back up there are pop ups asking if I should accept or deny! And my clock is set to 2008 and I try to connect to the Internet but it gets an exclamation mark and never works! I've tried restarting it but no change! And sometimes it will work but it won't work for like a week then it does this like every week

I would take your machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them run diagnostics on it and give you an estimate on what it would cost to fix the entire machine. This will be free. If the estimate sounds outrageous, you can always ask about the Apple falt rate repair policy - you could have a 'like new' machine for less than $350US.

  • MacBook Pro shuts off when unplugged.

For the past week my MacBook charger has been not functioning correctly. It only charged my computer when it was the the right position. I figured there was a short in the wires and was just going to pick up a new one. Last night however, the charger stopped working completely. I tried moving it around for about an hour until i just gave up and figured there was no hope. As soon as i shut the MacBook though, the charger light came on, but again when i moved the wire too much, it turned off. As soon as the charger light turned off, so did my MacBook. And i thought it was weird since there was still about 20% battery life, and it turned back on fine, but the date got reset to the year 2000 and it made me put in my wifi info again, which has never happened. I shrugged it off and really didnt think much of it though until it happened again today. This afternoon i plugged my Macbook in and it was and the charger was working fine after i found the right position to put it in. I let it charge for a few hours while i was out, and when i got home i used my Macbook for about two hours before i decided to move the Mac, causing my charger to move and stop working. And my MacBook imediately shut off again, exactly how it did the night before. What is causing my Mac to do this? How do i fix it? Its about 2 years old and this is the first time anything like this has happened to it! Please help me, I'm not good with computers at all so i have no idea what to do. By the way i dont think its the battery since when i turn it back on it runs just fine without being plugged in. It only turns off when it has been charging and then stops.

Borrow a friend's MagSafe Charger or try with the ones in the Apple Store. Sorry I wasn't clear from your post if you purchased a new charger yet.
Also clean the contacts on the MagSafe port and the charger side.
    Apple recommends:
"Remove debris gently with a cotton swab or a soft bristle toothbrush, which provide the strength, flexibility, and precision for this task. Be careful not to get any cotton fibers stuck in the pin receptacle. You may use isopropyl alcohol to aid in cleaning the connectors as well. Be sure the connectors are dry before using the computer or adapter after cleaning."

  • No low battery warning, just shuts off

I have an Core Due Macbook back from September 06, and recently I've stopped getting that low battery warning message. Now my laptop will just shut off at 20min (sometimes even 30min) without any warning. I tried recalibrating the battery, it solved the problem for one charge (I saw the warning message once) but after that it went back to shutting off at 20min again. I've heard that Apple has extended their battery coverage, but my laptop is at 315 cycles now. I do have the extended warranty though-will that cover a replacement battery?

Hi. Recalibrating the battery does not prolong battery life. It will only help in getting a more accurate battery charge when using the computer on battery power alone. What you can do is make sure that you have the battery update and latest software from apple. Also, try resetting the SMC of your computer. Here are the links for more info. Hope these help.

  • Macbook Pro shuts off as soon as Power Adapter is plugged in

Hi. I opened up my Mid 2010 macbook pro 13 today to get some dust out. After putting everything back together I found that it wouldn't turn on anymore. A couple of hours passed and I was able to turn it back on - there hasn't been any damage to my HDD and everything is 100% normal. The problem I have been having though is that the second I plug in my charger the laptop just shuts off.
I can't turn my Mac back on while the charger is in, but the weird thing is that it's actually being charged during this time so I have no clue what the problem is. I managed to turn it on once with the charger in and everything was going fine until I loaded up a game and it turned off after about 15 minutes.
Any ideas as to what is happening to my Mac? I don't think it's an HDD issue and I don't think the battery is defective since it still holds a full charge without an issue.
Any help is appreciated, thank you!

You don't have the same problem, you have the 'I damaged my Mac by spilling water on it' problem.
    it will probably fail.
Take it to an Apple Store.

  • MacBook Pro shuts off during video conversion/heavy CPU usage

I'm not quite sure how to troubleshoot this, and I'm curious if anyone has experienced this, or has any suggestions.
Whenever I do a video conversion, about 10 minutes in, my MacBook Pro just shuts off. Some examples of the kind of video conversions I'm doing are, exporting an EyeTV recording to iTunes, or converting a video already in iTunes to AppleTV or iPod/iPhone. Both of these examples are using Quicktime, I'm assuming?
I did a clean reinstall of Tiger, and the problem was still there. And, after upgrading to Leopard, the problem is still there.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Could be due to overheating. Install iStat Menus, show CPU use, CPU temp, and fan speed in the menu bar, and start converting. If CPU use is pegged, fans are at 6000 rpm, and temp rises to/above 90 C, then your MBP shuts off, that's the issue.
There are some early models of MBPs that had too much thermal paste, leading to excessive heat build up.
