My MacBook just switched off (paused?) ????

I was just surfing the web and suddenly the screen went off. I am not sure if it switched off or it went in standby. Probably the second because the only option I had left has been to hold the power button for few secs and the light of an USB hub went off as well. Then on the second power push it restarted.
I just had that USB hub connected (with no devices on) and the bluetooth mighty mouse. OS bug or messed up hw??

  • MacBook Pro switches off while plugged in

Today my MacBook Pro (Nov 2010, 13") just switched off while I was working on it. Adaptor was plugged in. Computer wasn't completely switched off, I still got the little white sleepinglight (not blinking) when I closed it, but the screen was completely black. I switch it off using the off-button, and switch it on again. It's working fine now. Should I worry that my MacBook will give up completely, just when the guarantee-period has past, and call Apple now, or is this just an occasional glitch?
I've also had two or three instances where it didn't wake up after being asleep with closed lid.

no that will happen when ur on them internally but if ur on the computer itself then it souldnt my did that while i had the keyboard removed so it should be fine if it only happend once if it happens again while ur on the computer then its overheating and u just need to let it cool its the video chip inside that overheats

  • My on/off button does not appear to be working on my iphone 3.....is there any way around this....anyway around this?...the phone also periodically just switches off.

my on/off button does not appear to be working on my iphone 3.....is there any way around this....anyway around this?...the phone also periodically just switches off.

Likely a hardware issue... no way around that except to get it repaired or don't use it (the button).
Try restoring to solve the switching off problem.

  • Macbook pro switched off won't turn back on

My mid 2011 macbook pro switched off while I was charging my iphone 5 with it (was using belkin cable since NY apple cable started ripping open at the ends and now it won't work).
This happened 2 days ago. I browsed through some of the community members having the same problem but none of it works for me. If I recall the macbook has 60% chsrge . I tried connecting my charger to the laptop it only lights up with a light green color that's hardly noticeable. Moreover none of the keys work it seems. Please help

You will have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.

My ipad just switched off and won't turn on again?

Have you tried forcing a reboot? Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. If you see a silver apple it's rebooting.

  • Power Mac G5 on start up it repetedly has white screen with circling icon then just switches off

Power Mac G5... Pleas Help!!! i'm not sure if my hard drive is broken but on start up it repetedly has white screen with the circling (doing somthing) icon then just switches off. If i press alt when switching on i get a grey screen with 3 icons, 1st is like a refresh arrow button & last is a straight arrow button on pressing either of these mac just starts the white screen thing again, the middle icon is a picture of a hard drive with a blue cross in the corner & written under neath it says macintosh HD. Does this mean my hard drive has gone?

Been there, done that.  Try a Safe Boot (holding down the shift key at boot) and see if it boots.  If it boots, then you may be having problems with either the power supply or the video card.  What video card is in the machine?
If it does a safe boot OK, then we can troubleshoot using a verbose boot.  Verbose boot puts up a Unix Console screen and displays text output during the boot process.  When I had these symptoms, verbose boot showed me that the power supply was clicking off right after the kext to drive the GeForce 6800 card loaded.  I replaced the power supply and the problem went away.
To initiate a verbose boot, hold down the  cmd-V combination until you see the console screen come up.  Watch the output and pay attention, because you need to remember what is being said when the machine shuts down.  You may need to repeat this two or three times.
As an aside, often times power supplies exhibit this behavior when they have become choked with dust.  This is pretty universal after five or six years, requiring that the power supply be removed and the dust blown out with clean shop air.

The backlight burned out from getting it wet. You will have to replace the screen at a 3rd party shop, buy a screen and replace it yourself, or make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store and do an out-of-warranty replacement for $199 USD.

  • Upgraded to Mavericks and have lost the closedown/restart function - how can I recover this function. Pressing on/off button just switches off the display. Thanks

Have just upgraded to Mavericks OS X and have lost the closedown/restart function. Pressing the on/off button just switches off the screen. Thanks

Hold the power button for about 7 seconds to shutdown or select shutdown under the  menu.

  • Apple tv just switched off half way through a movie ,now just flashes but no screen on tv

apple tv just switched off half way through a movie ,now just flashes but no screen on tv ? is it scrap

If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

  • My macbook pro switched off and wont turn back on. i tried to charge it but it still wont work. how can i get it to turn back on??

My macbook pro randomly switched off and wont turn back on. I have tried to charge it but it wont work. How can I get it to turn back on??

It's more than likely broken, a part has failed. You need to take it to a Apple store Genius Bar to be checked out and fixed. Or just buy a new Mac as to fix the one you have might be cost prohibitive. Especially if your warranty has expired.

  • Imac 20" just stopped working - just switches off

  • My MacBook Just shuts off...

My MacBook will just shut off for no reason when i am doing work and such. I did a virus scan and all and found nothing. What is going on and why would it do this? Is there anyway to fix it?
    Please Help...
    August

I had the same problem with my Macbook. There appears to have been an issue with the original design of the heat sink for the microprocessor. I sent my Macbook in for repair a couple of weeks ago, and Apple replaced the heat sink. The Macbook has been working well since the repair.
Either call Applecare, or take it into an Authorized Apple store/repair center. In either case, it will need to go in for repair.
My repair took about a week (heatsink was on backorder). I've had other repair work done by Apple (other computers I've owned). Excluding the wait for the backordered Heatsink, My experience has been a turn-around time (excluding shipping) of < 48hours.
p.s. Be sure to discuss any other issues you may be having at the time you schedule service. My Macbook also had the discoloration issue where my hands rested on the case during typing (known issue with early MacBooks). Both issues were addressed during the repair.

  • Is it safe to just switch off tv at wall socket?

My wife has a habit of switching everything off at the wall socket. So if I get an tv, it will be switched off randomly at the wall.
Is this safe to do? is there a standby button on the tv? how do you switch it off? I dont want here just switching it off at wall socket when its in the middle of reading/writing to HDD as surely this will damage it?
    cheers

how can stopping a hard drive without 1st preparing it to be stopped ever be healthy for a device? how can increasing the possibility of interrupting data transfers in the middle of a transfer and increasing the possibility of corrupting data ever be a good thing?
the OP said that the power could be yanked at any old time.. i can't understand how you can say that would be a good thing for an appleTV.
i also run mine 24/7 and my device is solid as a rock.. i restart mine only by doing the press and hold menu + down button and since i stopped unplugging and re-plugging to restart it's stability has gone up markedly..
i would say to the OP.. if the power is going to be pulled in any case.. what you might want to do is press menu on the iPod Touch or appleTV remote for about 10 seconds after you're done with it to make sure it's at the main menu and lessen the chance it's doing anything of significants at the moment the power goes out. you are still likely reducing the life of the hard drive by constantly turning it off and on.. hard drives are designed to run constantly all the time.. spinning them up and down only reduces their lifespan.

  • Leopard won't start Just switches off

When I boot up into leopard the computer hangs for a while then switches off. My window partition still boots up alright.

It's not such a big deal.
Did you ever move the macbook while it was running? That's really a big NO-NO. You have to sleep it to move it safely. There are huge gyroscopic forces involved.
Or did you ever let someone else use it? That's also dangerous.
Your best bet is to boot into the DVD again and in the Terminal mode, run
    fsck_hfs
with the correct switches (see below) and repair the drive. You might first see if you can clone it with CCC.
Never use fsck - it might ruin an hfs drive. Always use fsck_hfs
Here's the man page for fsck_hfs
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man8/fsck_hfs .8.html
