My macbook keeps on freezing

Hi, I have a MacBook7, 1, and it keeps freezing.
Mac Info:
- Version 10.6.8
- Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
- Memory 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
- Startup Disk Macintosh HD
The first time it froze, I had been using it for about 2 hours, and I was watching a TV episode online when all of a sudden it just stopped. I had to force shutdown and restart. Half an hour in the same thing happened, and then the time I had before it froze got shorter and shorter until it was about 10 seconds. By the end I didn't even have any applications open before it froze and I did havie it plugged in.
When it freezes, there is no grey screen or beach ball mouse, it just stops. The fans go on full blast and if I'm playing a song on iTunes it keeps replaying the last 1/2 a second of the song like a broken record.
Sometimes when I restart it takes a few 5 second holds of the power button to get it going, but usually it eventually does. Recently though I was starting it up and where the apple should have been a circle with a diagonal line appeared, like a no access sign or something. I had to then shut it down and restart again. This has only happened once.
I've been having this problem for a while now, it got so annoying that I gave up, put it away and didn't use it for 2 years. I've decided to bring it out give it another shot but it eventually froze, and the period before the freeze kept getting shorter and shorter, until now it barley lasts 10 seconds.
The first time this occurred I had it examined at a Mac store, it cost a couple of hundred dollars and they couldn't find anything wrong. I've been tempted to get it examined at a new one, but I don't know if I want to waste that much money again.
If anyone has any idea what's going on or how to possibly fix it, I would greatly appreciate it,
Thanks.

Since you've got a valid backup (always important), the first thing I'd do is boot to the diagnostics from the original installation DVD. Run diags, full if possible, but short if not. This will, hopefully, give you information about pending hardware failures. In some cases, there have been faulty video chips that have caused systems to fail in the fashion you describe. Apple has often replaced the logic boards on these systems, even out of warranty.
If there is a HDD failure in progress, diags will likely find that and enable you to replace the ailing hard disk. You can use your installation DVD to restore your complete system from a Time Machine backup or migrate your user ID into a fresh install.
If the diagnostics do not indicate any failures, you should:
Reset your NVRAM (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379);
Reset your SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964);
Boot to Safe Mode (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564).
Optionally, but not a bad idea by any means, is to boot to the installation DVD and use Disk Utility to repair the disk and repair the file permissions.
With luck, the NVRAM and SMC resets will get the system singing happily. If not, let us know and we'll carry on from there.

  • My macbook keeps on freezing with black screen

My Macbookpro keeps on freezing. Suddenly the screen goes black and it does not respond to any command.

It could be one of many problems, including a failing Graphics Card/RAM/HDD (I suspect the first one)
What you need to do is to perform a full Apple Hardware Test and post the results here.
On your computer, the AHT program is on the second DVD that came with your machine.
Refer to this page to help you do this test...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
    Using Apple Hardware Test
Apple Hardware Test (AHT) contains a suite of diagnostics that will test the hardware of your computer. It's a great way to rule out a hardware issue when troubleshooting your computer.
Using Apple Hardware Test on computers with OS X 10.5.5 to 10.6.7
AHT is located on the Applications Install Disc 2 and should be included with your computer or the MacBook Air Software Reinstall Drive on a MacBook Air (Late 2010). To start AHT on these computers make sure the Applications Install Disc 2 is inserted into the built-in optical drive, external Apple Superdrive, or for the MacBook Air (Late 2010) be sure the MacBook Air Software Reinstall Drive is inserted into a USB port. Please then follow steps 1-6 outlined in the "Using Apple Hardware Test on computers with OS X 10.7 or later" section of this article.

  • Macbook keeps on freezing whole laptop just stops

My mac has been doing this for about 1 and half weeks now i don't know why it's happening, i'm just useing it like i always do like checking emails, editing videos, looking at the web and then it just stops the only thing i can do is move the mouse, even the time stops on it? Anyone have any ideas?

Yes it is true Apple do recommend the update. They also give a step by step guide that must be followed. They also offer a CD restore if all goes wrong. I don't work for Apple, I am just spending my precious time trying to help put someone on the right course.
If you don't want to try what I recommend please take your machine back to Apple. I am sure they will sort it out for you.

  • My macbook keeps turning off and freezing on start up

So like my macbook keeps either freezing on start up or it will just shut off or restart itself
When it restarts itself it will bring up the main screen then this box comes up telling me to hold down the power button and restart it
A friend said it might have something to do with the fan not working or it overheating
But I can have it off all night then turn it on in the morning and it will mess up
It will do it sometimes between 2-4 times
I don't know what is making it does this
I ran the check up things and it said that nothing was wrong?

This sounds like the same thing that has been happening to both my Macbook and Macbook Pro. Some others sound like they have similar problems. This is what I posted in the Macbook Pro area regarding the same symptoms. This is discouraging. These computers are expensive and they should have the bugs worked out better than this.

I wonder if I have similar problems. I have both a Macbook Pro 15" and a Macbook 13"
1st my macbook started shutting itself off unexpectedly. It got more and more frequent. I have done several fixes including: archive and install, sending it in to have a logic board replaced, downloading an updated disc utility repair, and sending it in to have a power component replaced. Now I will be sending it in for a third time and I think they will replace the Macbook machine if this repair doesn't work.
Now my Macbook Pro is doing the same thing. I have had it for about 6 months and it was running fine until now. I ran the exact same software on my 12 G-4 powerbook without any problems. One of the computer people at work said it sounds like a power problem. It happens whether it is running AC or on battery power and doesnt seem to matter what I am doing.
I am waiting for the macbook to be fixed before I address the Macbook Pro because I dont want to have both of my computers in the shop at the same time.
Any suggestions? This seems totally unacceptable for two new expensive computers.

  • HT1338 my macbook keeps freezing

my macbook keeps freezing how do i fix this problem?

Boot from your installer dvd, recovery partition, or external bootable drive and run Disk Utility to repar/verify your drives (not repair permissions).
Do a smc and pram reset.
Boot in safe mode then reboot.
See if your machine still freezes after those operations are preformed.  If so run Apple Hardware Test to check your machine.
If AHT findes nothing then your software additions will need to be investigated.  But worry about that later.

  • Safari keeps on freezing on my Macbook Pro

    Hi all
In the past 2-3 months Safari keeps on freezing after 5-10mins of use. It works again when I restart my Macbook, but keeps happening.
I've ran a software update, which hasn't done anything.
I'm going to download Firefox this evening to see if that has the same issues.
Can anybody suggest how to fix this problem to save me taking it in anywhere.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, monitor, and Ethernet, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account that has the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, perhaps including wireless networking on certain Macs. If you usually connect to the Internet via WiFi, and it doesn’t work in safe mode, connect using an Ethernet cable. If you can’t do that, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and perform a safe login, as follows: Enter your credentials at the login screen, then hold down the shift key and click the “Log in” button. Keep holding the key until the menu bar appears. In this mode, your login items, among other things, won’t load.
In safe mode, test again. Same problem(s) now?
After testing, reboot (if you booted in safe mode) or log out/log in (if you performed a safe login) as usual.

  • Macbook pro 13inch freezing playing videos, please help!

    Hello all,
    Here is the scenario:
I have a macbook pro 13" running windows 7 via bootcamp. Recently a window pops up telling me there was a major update available for bootcamp and some other stuff. I downloaded it right away. Even though I was running windows 7 at the time, it seems like it was the mac os that was telling of the update. Anyway, I have not seen what if anything the update fixed as my keyboard light is always on no matter what.
But right after the update I noticed that my computer keeps on freezing after playing youtube videos. In fact any video from any website will freeze it anywhere from 10 seconds to sometimes over a minute. Sometimes it does it even when the video is on my hard drive right when it ends or if I stop the video midway.
I thought the culprit was google chrome I had intalled right around the same time I downloaded the update. However after I uninstall google chrome, the problem still persist.
    Is there a fix?
Am I alone here or have others experience the same thing?
    thanks in advanced!

You may want to post in the Boot Camp forum to target the specialists over there. I don't know anything about Windows or Boot Camp, but does the problem occur in OS X as well?

  • Macbook Pro i5 freezes in Win 7 (Boot Camp)

Hey guys, loving my new MBP (It's my first Mac, yay) except for one thing... It is freezing randomly in Win 7 Pro 32bit. I'm using Bootcamp 3.1 drivers. The mouse cursor will freeze and I can't do anything. I have to hold the power button down for a few seconds until the machine turns off.
I've found I'm not alone, and there are users who have had this issue with Vista as well.
    (http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?54536-Solution-MacBook-Pr o-Freezing-in-Vista)
It looks like the problem is related to the Nvidia display driver. I've tried downloading the latest drivers (197.16notebook_winvista_win7_32bit_internationalwhql.exe) but I get the error "The Nvidia Setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit."
It looks like I'm going to have to mod the display driver so I can install it.
    Anyone else having this issue?

FYI - Froze with the modded nVidia driver 197.16. Happened when I moved a window. It's so random. Next day Windows Update notified me of a new graphics update (197.45) installed that but then froze randomly when I had Team Fortress 2 running in the main menu.
When it first happened I didnt get any errors in the Event Viewer.
Here's a few I recently got in the last freeze.
    HAL:
The platform firmware has corrupted memory across the previous system power transition. Please check for updated firmware for your system.
The previous system shutdown at 10:34:56 PM on 28/04/2010 was unexpected.
    ACPI:
: The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS. In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly.
    Kernel-Power:
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

  • MacBook Pro frequent freezes problem

    Hi everyone,
My MacBook Pro frequently freezes despite very light use. I took it to a "genius" today, but he was not very helpful. Actually, it froze again right at the apple store while they were checking it. The log showed some errors from Quicksilver right before the freeze and they suggested disabling Quicksilver for a while. At the same time they said that Quicksilver is "solid" and should not cause any serious problems. They also recommending deleting flash plugins, but admitted that it was unlikely that a flash plugin was causing freezes.
Nothing came up during hardware tests, and I already did a clean reinstall of the OS (twice).
I would appreciate any suggestions. The Macbook Pro is 6 months old, 17in, 2.66 Ghz Core i7 with 8 GB of RAM. There is 300+ GB of free space on the hard disk.
    Thanks

I had similar issues. I formatted, did a clean install, and ran software update to make sure everything was up to date. Then I logged in for the first time, ran handbreak and 6 vlc windows and it froze within 10 minutes. This is most likely not caused by Quicksliver or any other software. You should register your complaints in this thread to keep them all together:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2768351&tstart=0
Then you should call apple care to register your complaint. I've scheduled a call for tomorrow.

  • HT1338 After updating to Lion 10.7.5 I have had stability issues - Macbook continues to freeze and Spotlight is forever indexing. What's the fix?

I am having real stability issues after installing Lion OS X 10.7.5 - my Macbook keeps freezing and Spotlight is forever repeatedly indexing - does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem with a Mac Pro desktop and it started after I upgraded to 10.7.5 . Exact same issue , Crashes for no reason ( very little running - mail, browser) then reboots. Sometimes it does multiple reboots.
I hate to say it but it's tiumes like this that I envy the Microsoft's approach to updates, if it is bad (which is not unheard of) you can go into programs and remove the last update. It would be nice if Apple implemented this since their quality doesn't seem to be what it once was.
