My Macbook Pro 10.6.8 is getting slow... What can I do to find out which program could be the problem?
My Macbook is getting slow. I also hear the harddisk running.
I would like to know which program is eating capacity... Is there an application that could tell me?

My MacBook Pro just started to run very slow, what can I do to fix it?
My MacBook Pro just started to run very slow, what can I do to fix it?
First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long. -
I'm trying to connect my Bluetooth JBL speakers to my Macbook Pro but it isn't working. I can't seem to find Bluetooth Setup Assistant because I updated my laptop. What should I do?
Make sure you set the speakers as discoverable, which usually involves holding down a button for a few seconds. Go to System Preferences / Bluetooth and you should be able to add it.

Does the Macbook Pro (2012) have a dvd drive? I can't seem to find one.
Does the Macbook Pro (2012) have a dvd drive? I can't seem to find one.
Not the MBP-R's, you can't even change the RAM or storage in them.
The other 15" MBP's you can and they include the Superdrive built in.
Last time you do a impulsive purchase huh? -
After upating from Lion 10.7.4 to 10.7.5, my MacBook Pro will not reboot. Why? What can I do about it?
I ended up having to visit an Apple Store. They claimed that the update must have aggravated an already corrupted hard disk drive. The solution was to wipe my hard disk (fortunately I had recently backed up on Time Machine). The "Genius" also claimed this was the first time he had come across the problem. Although he was clearly able to diagnose it straightaway, and the next person he saw had exactly the same problem with his Mac, and I saw an awful lot of customers queuing up with their Macs and iMacs looking very suspiciously like they all had the same problem! So clearly Apple know what the problem is but as usual treat customers as if they're idiots in order to cover up the problem. But at least the problem is now solved (although having to take at trip out and wait in a queue at an Apple store, and then restoring from backups is a painstaking inconvenience I could well have done without). All I can suggest is that you might as well take it in. None of the "solutions" on the Forum are remotely on the ball, and all Apple "Geniuses" have clearly been told what the problem is and how to fix it. Good luck!

I'm a first timer on this (or any) help site. I just installed Time Capsule. The first backup looks like it will take two days at the present speed. Can I close MacBook Pro and have first back up continue, and can I unplug tomorrow and plug in at work without affecting the backup?
Hi Oneinspirit,
Time Machine backups can be paused by choosing "Stop Backing Up" from the Time Machine icon on the right hand side of your menu bar ( ). Once you're ready to resume the backup, you can choose "Back Up Now" from the same icon.
Start a backup: Click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar, then choose Back Up Now.
Pause a backup: Click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar, then choose Stop Backing Up.
OS X Yosemite: Start, pause, and resume a Time Machine backup

some 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pros are known to have a defective NVIDIA GPU. Since you’re getting GPU faults, yours might be one with the defect. Apple had a gratis servicing program for this model’s defect that lasted for three years from the date of the MacBook Pro’s purchase; they still offer the servicing program, but it is no longer guaranteed to be gratis. I’d recommend making an appointment at your nearest Apple store, to have them run a video hardware test on your MacBook Pro to confirm whether or not its NVIDIA GPU has this defect. -
i made a dual boot of windows 7 and mac os x lion in my macbook pro .i installed m icrosoft support software also. now, can i install windows updates? do i turn on the automatic updating of updates?
yes you need the updates and patches.
Only some of the drivers that Windows will automatically install at times
and always make sure to insure it is using restore points
do all the maintenance andsuch as normal
use MS Security Essentials for AV is really top notch
Clean disk space
Use WinClone new program to inisure you have a restore image -
2009 MacBook Pro on Snow Leopard crashes when operating on battery only. Works fine when plugged in. The battery holds a charge as indicated by the battery monitor in the menu bar and the green lights on the side.
Is this a hardware issue/battery issue/software issue??
Thanks!Hi s,
Sounds like battery. Go to Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info > Hardware > Power and see what it says for batt condition and also cycles. -
My Macbook Pro screen is completely smashed up! What can/should I do?
I dropped my Macbook Pro and the screen is completely smashed up. Glass not shattered but display is white with some colour markings - completely unuseable. Some denting to metal case. What is my next step? I have Apple Care and I'm within my one year warranty, but this damage is clearly inflicted by a third party, not the result of a manufacturing error. What should I do? I'm terrified: any idea of price/who can repair/how long it will take to repair will be hugely appreciated.
Take it to Apple and see what they say. If you're in the US, they can ship it to the Apple depot for repair, which is less expensive than an in-store repair. We had a system sent to the Apple depot for repair, and as I recall the repair took 3 or 4 days, from drop off at the store to being returned to the store.

My mac seems to be getting slow, what can I do to speed it up?
My iMac seems to be getting slow..I see the "colorful wheel from ****" (as I like to call it) far too often these days. In addition, videos are freezing far more often than they ever did before. It often requires me to restart completely.
Is there anything I can do to fix this?Step by Step to fix your Mac
Why is my computer slow?
Most commonly used backup methods
If you get pinwheels when off the Internet, it coudl be a failing boot drive or just a few bad sectors as it has a hard time reading from it.
This is a possible cure, it's a lot of work though.

does anyone have a suggestion as to what to do?
Thank you very much. It was driving me crazy. Netflix worked for a while. I think it was up until I had updated the firmware that things changed. I kind of feel very stupid that I hadn't thought of the plug-in. Thanks guys a lot

Its only photo booth that causes this. I did a fresh install Of OS X and did updates. I tried resetting the pram or nvram. Didnt do anything. Any suggestions?
