My MacBook Pro 15" won't shut down properly.

I am in search of help cause no one seems to know what the problem is. I have a late 2008 unibody 2.4ghz 15" MacBook pro. everything works smoothly and fine the computer runs superb, but when I go to shut it down I get a gray screen and a pinwheel thing and it just keeps spinning. Ive left it doing this for about 8 hours so I know it's not an issue with time. I can only get it to shut down when i hold the power button which I don't like doing. Everything else is in full working order any suggestions?

Sounds like you might need a SMC reset.
I would also try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

  • MacBook Pro sometime won't shut down after Lion installation.

After installation of Lion my new MacBook Pro (early 2011) sometime won't shut down in the normal way and I have to shut it down using the power botton.

Make sure you quit out of all programs prior to shuting down if you have not done so.
Boot up from your install DVD and run "Repair Disk" from the Utility menu.

  • MacBook Pro(2007) won't shut down completely

    MacBook Pro(2007)-Leopard
When I go to shut down the computer, I click on the shut down now or just let it do it's own thing, and everything is fine until it gets to the part where I get the spinning gear cirlce.
It just keeps going and going and going....until I have to force the computer to shut down by pressing the power button.
Unless I reboot and shut down again(usually works second time), the computer will not come on when it is scheduled to in the AM.

  • MacBook Pro OCCASIONALLY won't shut down or restart

It seems like this only happens after I've been dealing with large files or, I guess, doing a lot? Example: I've been working on a large-ish file in Pixelmator and if I work on it long enough, the program lags. I also just purchased a rather large album on iTunes this morning (close to 60 songs) and when it was finished, iTunes lagged. Whenever something like this happens, I try to restart my computer just to sort of refresh it, I guess, but it just sits with my wallpaper and the spinning circle on the screen. For hours. Until I hold the power button, but this distresses me, as this is the EXACT reason I bought a Mac in the first place.
I have tried to run Disk Utility from my installer disc, but after selecting the language, a window pops up saying Snow Leopard can't be installed and asks me to either restore from Time Machine (which I don't use) or just restart regularly. It won't let me access the menu bar options (except "Speech.")
I have zero idea what Onyx is and would like to avoid having to download it if I can.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Is your software all up to date? If not, that would be the first thing to do. When done updating, be sure to repair permissions.
Also, be sure that any third party software you might have is fully compatible with Snow Leopard.
Also check in Activity Monitor to be sure you don't have some runaway process hogging the CPU and bogging everything down.
Don't know why you can't get to Disk Utility on the install disc--the most logical thing to do is to boot from the install disk and navigate to Disk Utility and repair your boot disk. No idea why you're getting this message and can't access Disk Utility.
Can you boot to the Apple Hardware Test? If so, it might be worth running the extended version of it to see if anything shows up in the form of an error code.
If you don't get an answer here, you might try asking in the Snow Leopard forum. Unless something shows up on the hardware test, this sounds like more of a software problem.
    Good luck!

If you have your MBP charger, try a SMC reset:

If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.

  • Itunes is causing my Macbook Pro to freeze at shut down, any ideas?

For a while I was confused as to why my brand new Macbook Pro was failing to shut down. I continued to use it, and each time I would shut my computer off it would freeze with a loading dial in the lower-middle part of the screen. Eventually I started to run one program at a time. I ran Safari (among other programs), and the computer shut down fine. I ran Itunes, and the computer failed to shut down. I have also realized that Microsoft Office causes my computer to freeze at shut down as well. I have run disk utility to check my hard-drive. Everything came out fine, so I know it is not a hardware problem. Something with the software of Microsoft Office and Itunes are not functioning properly... Anybody have any ideas?

  • MacBook Pro display doesn't close down properly.

We have one MacBook Pro that doesn't close down properly. The display just bounces up. Is there any way to fix this or is this something that needs to be fixed by a technician?

Try blowing out the slots where the two "prongs" come up, and the release button slot (push it in and out a bit while doing this) with compressed air. (use your lungs if you don't have a can of air).
Often a bit of crumb or other gunk will impede the mechanism enough to prevent the magnets from being able to do their job properly.
    Cheers

  • My Mac Mini Won't Shut Down Properly

I recently upgraded to 10.6.2 after buying a mac wireless keyboard and magic mouse. Now I keep getting this problem where the OS won't shut down.
One of the symptoms is that when I move the mouse to the area at the top right of the screen with the clock, volume and wifi icons (is there a name for that?) I just get a spinning beach ball. The clock has stopped too! Also the volume controls from the keyboard don't work any more, even the remote control stops working. I can't shut down or sleep the computer, even 'about my mac' doesn't work.
Other applications seem to work OK and in Activity Monitor I don't see any unresponsive apps.
This hanging doesn't start straight away and two things that have set it off have been using the volume controls and when I tried to press ⌘-space to search for something.
I really don't know where to begin!

Still doing it! I disconnected all the USB peripherals and that was fine for a while, also removed stuff out of the task bar thing that I wasn't using.
Then re-connected the USB hub and it happened again... maybe it's something to do with that or just bad luck...

  • My ipad won't shut down properly

My ipad will not sleep nor shut down properly. When I plug it in it freezes.  Any solutions to this?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

  • MacBook Pro freezes after clicking 'Shut Down' and won't remember 9600M GT

After choosing 'Shut Down' from the Apple menu my MacBook Pro (1998, 5,1 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo) freezes and the Grey Screen of Death appears.
Strangely this only happens when I'm using the lower-power GeForce 9400M graphics card. When I use the high-performance NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics card my MacBook Pro wil shut down normally.
Ever since upgrading my system to Mac OS X 10.6.3 this problem occurs. But since then also other problems arose. After installing Safari 5 my MacBook didn't boot, and I had to zap the PRAM to get the system booting again. Since then my system won't save the 9600M GT setting in the Energy Saving panel. I can logout from the 9600M and login to the 9600M GT, but after a reboot it switches back to the 9600M card.
Today I did a combo update to Mac OS X 10.6.4, but all the problems still occur. Also I did maintenance tasks with 'Cocktail' and 'Maintenance', but that didn't help either.
Also sometimes after choosing the GeForce 9600M GT graphics card, OS X logs out and hangs in the blue screen instead of displaying the login screen.
I hope someone can help me out with this!

Unfortunately the problem reoccured, alltought less. The last weeks my MacBook froze two times.
The report I send to Apple contains the following:
    ... Sat Jul 17 12:42:23 2010
    panic(cpu 1 caller 0x124fc5b): "AGC GPU REGISTER RESTORE FAILED : rdar://7254528"@/SourceCache/AppleGraphicsControl/AppleGraphicsControl-2.8.63/k ext/AGCPowerManagement.cpp:849
Backtrace (CPU 1), Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack)...
Anyone a clue how to solve this problem? Thanks!

  • Macbook Pro retina (2012) randomly shuts down, won't wake

My Macbook Pro retina display mid 2012 with OS 10.9 has been acting more and more erratically.
When I close it to sleep, it often won't wake.  Space bar does nothing.  Sometimes after a minute the power button will wake it.  Other times one has to push the power button for over thirty seconds and then it will restart.  Also when leaving it to back up to a time capsule overnight it often will try to shut itself down.  I checked the power saver and automatic shut down panels and those are not set to do that.
Any ideas or do I have to take it to the genius bar?

Yes, especially if you are still under warranty or have AC.  Let Apple deal w/it.

  • HT1338 Macbook Pro 10.7.4 won't shut down properly

I'm having issues when either I shut down or reboot. When it tries to shut down, the screen goes white with the pinwheel, but never turns off. I will leave my computer up, just to see if it ever shuts down, but never does. Can you please assist? 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

The progress bar IS what you get when doing a Safe Boot. So that is what the system is doing when you are trying to do a normal boot.
How old is your MBP? What year is it?
You have some type of hard drive problem, it would seem.
See if you can boot into the Recovery HD partition. At startup hold down the Command+r key and that should boot to the recovery HD system.
Open Disk Utility and Verify Disk and iof needed Repair Disk and then Verify Permissions and Repair Permissions.
That is IF the system boots to the Recovery HD.

  • HT1338 how do I boot a MacBook pro that will not shut down

HOw can I reboot shut don MacBook pro that will not shutdown, please help.....?......

Hi, I'm having similar problem. I just got a Lacie ext drive to back up my photos and vids and now my laptop wont shut down or go to sleep properly.  May or may not be related to Lacie. Could just be a coincidence.
I first noticed problem when I closed it to go to sleep and the apple logo kept flashing on and off.
When I opened the laptop the screen was flashing white then black, then white then black.   Had to force shut
it down (opt, cmnd, power), had to hold it down a very long time before it responded.  However, that didn't keep it shut down. It just started back up again.  But at least it wasn't flashing.
Then when i tried to shut it down normally it would shut down, go black for a moment and then the Apple song would play and it would start  back up again.    It also won't stay asleep. It sleeps for two seconds when put into sleep mode then snaps awake.
strange problem... Very annoying. Next option is to unplug and let battery run out.

  • Core i7 15" MacBook Pro not rebooting or shutting down

    Hi All,
My MacBook Pro will not shut down or reboot properly - it sits at the gray screen with the spinning circle.
I have tried resetting the SMC but to no avail and I have to turn off by holding down the power switch.
This has just become more of an issue as I want to install the new SMC firmware update but can't as the machine won't reboot after the update is unpacked and hard rebooting via the power switch cancels the update.
I am running OSX 10.8.2.  Any ideas?
    Steve

    I'll repeat:
You may have directory issues. Shut down. Then boot while holding down the command-r keys until it boots to the ML recovery disk. Select Disk Utility and then run Repair Disk.
    Did you do that?
