My macbook pro 17" won't boot with internal or external

Hi there,
Having some trouble with my 17" Macbook pro.  It's the 2009 version.
I was updating some things the other day and, when it restarted, it froze.  And, every time after that, it froze.
I figured it was just a hard drive issue and tried to re install snow leopard, but, it wouldn't boot up from the disk.
i began to worry.
I used an external hdd to try and boot, it wouldn't boot.
I tried a different external drive (both of these booted successfully on another macbook) and that did not work either.
I then swapped out the hard drives with the internal hard drive, neither would boot.
It turns on fine, and gets to the white screen with the apple with all of the hard drives, but the spinning wheel never shows up, and nothing else happens.
It just sits there.
I booted in verbose mode and it just hung at the initial report... nothing else happened.
It won't boot in safe mode.
I've reset the pram and the smc.
It seems like a hardware problem, but that's really surprising, as before the problem with the update, it was working fine.
if anyone has any suggestions, I would be most grateful.
thanks in advance.

if you have Mac OS X 10.6.8 installed, then OS X Internet Recovery is unavailable to you.

  • MacBook Pro Retina, won't boot with USB3 attached.

    Hi!
Enjoying my new computer(ofcourse), thought i ran into a troublesome problem:
I plugged in Flashdrive 2, restarted and starting to hold alt to get into the boot menu.
But it never showed up(tested for about 5min), the screen showed up in gray, but then no more action was seen.
I pulled out Flashdrive 2 and had to hold the power key for a hard stop.
Then started the computer as normal and the boot menu showed up just as normal!
I repeated the process but with Flashdrive 1.
And the very same course was repeated.
Again I repeated the process but with Flashdrive 3 (with the very same ISO on it).
The install of windows succeded without any problem at all!
Note: When booted up in OSX i can read and format all the drives wiihout any type of error.
Computer: MacBook Pro Retina; RAM: 8gb, SSD: 256gb. MacBook Pro and Air Update 1.0 Installed.
Flashdrive 1a: Corsair Flash Voyager 8GB USB3; Ubuntu, bootable.
Flashdrive 1b: Corsair Flash Voyager 8GB USB3; Empty

But you may want to take it in to an Apple store as this type of thing should not happen on a New computer.

  • Macbook Pro A1278 won't boot with a new hdd

    Hi,
One day my macbook crashed, when I restarted it I received the flashing folder error and the disk utility could not see my drive anymore. I then purchased a 500gb Seagate hdd model ST500LM012 and installed it, but when I turn on the macbook it won't get past the first white screen and boot sound. All boot shortcuts are unavailable except for the ones that reset smc and pram. If I remove the hard drive the notebook boots ok into both the install DVD that caem with it and internet recovery.
What can I do? Is the hard drive incompatible? Or should I try something else?

You have to first partition and format the drive after which you have to install Mountain Lion. You cannot boot from a new, bare drive.
Restart the computer and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION-R keys until a globe appears on the screen. After a period of time (be patient) a Recovery screen will appear. Then do the following:
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
    Prepare the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive from the left side list. Click on the
Partition tab in the DU main window. Select one partition from the Partition
          Scheme dropdown menu.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 won't boot

My early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" won't boot. Second time dealing with this this year. Apple Store charged me $300+ to fix it the first time. It worked for a few months, but stopped working again. Took it to the shop again and asked them to fix it for good this time. They wanted to charge me $310. I said NO. why would they charge me twice for a repair I asked them to do before? How widespread is this problem? I know for a fact I'm not the only one dealing with this problem.

What have you done to define your problem?  Look at this comprehensive troubleshooting article and perhaps you can find a solution:

  • My quandary is how to transfer EVERYTHING from a Macbook pro that won't boot up to a new one, will the usual linking with a firewire lead still work?

I have an early intel Macbook Pro that wouldn't wake from sleep and won't now boot up, i'm just going to replace it with a new 13" i5 but i need to transfer the last five years of my life off the dead one to the new one, there's nearly 3 grand of music software and mp3's before i even think about the 10 years of photographs and videos, some of it is backed up but i ideally want to just transfer it all over.
what are my options? will linking the two together with a firewire or similar still be possible without the old one booting up (it still has power and turns on but the sleep light is constantly lit but very dim, the hard drive does sound like it's spinning up) or am I best removing the old Hard drive and putting it in an external case, would I be able to access directories and folders or could i boot up off an external drive or would there be hardware compatibility problems?
without sounding off i'd appreciate any complicated processes be explained in beginner to intermediate levels of "GEEK" i'm far from a pro but should be able to muddle through!!!
you've no idea how much any help with this will be appreciated!!!

Since the old MBP is dead the only option is to remove the hard drive and use a SATA/IDE to USB adapter to get all your stuff off the old drive.
One note though make sure you use the same user name and passord on your new MBP as you had on the old one.
As to software hopefully you have all the license information written down other wise you may have a hard time reinstalling some of it. Also be aware that OS X Lion will not run older PPC software. So if you have older programs that used Rosetta to run it will not run on Lion.
    Good luck with everything.

  • My Macbook Pro either won't boot or would crash a few mins after booting

Hi everyone, I'm having some problems with my Macbook Pro with Mac OS X 10.6.8 here.
It all started when I was just browsing the internet normally (with spotify web player on, if that's of any use) and a screen of black and white stripes appeared. I shut the computer down and tried to turn it on a few times but it would either just be stuck on the blue screen, or would boot but as soon as I opened Chrome the screen would just freeze (pointer won't move, caps lock cannot switch).
Googled for some help on similar problems. Some people recommended booting in safe mode and then restarting -- which worked for me. I could boot just fine in safe mode, so I restarted the computer in normal mode. It worked just fine until I played some video on youtube, and the black&white stripes appeared again. Shut the computer down. Looked for other solutions. Tried the disk repair and disk permissions repair many times. Strange results came up from the permission repair: permissions differ on Remote Management stuff, and repairing numerous times won't fix that problem. I suppose it should be no big deal since I don't use Remote Management on this computer anyway.
Whenever I tried booting in normal mode, the computer would either be stuck on the blue screen or on the gray screen. Treid NVRAM and SMC reset to no avail. Tried internet recovery mode but didn't work. Tried Apple Hardware Test too but all hardware was fine. The last time I booted in safe mode, I uninstalled the flash player and then managed to restart in normal mode, but it freezed again after a while.
The only thing left to try is reinstalling the OS but I dont really wish to erase my harddisk. Would it be a good idea to do this or would it only fail on me? I'm thinking of bringing it to an Apple repair but wish to solve this problem at home where possible.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance

  • Brand New MacBook Pro 15" Won't Boot from CD only

This Macbook (which I just bought today) seems to refuse to boot CDs.
    - Booting from the normal hard drive works fine.
    - Loading the CD from the OS when booting from the hard drive works fine (I can interact with the CDs normally)
    - Same problem with Apple OS disk & self-burned TechTool Pro disk
I've tried resetting the PRAM three times now. Any idea what's wrong?

Hmm, I hadn't tried booting the system restore CDs that came with it. Turns out they work just fine. The two CDs I was trying to boot (but aren't working) are:
    - Micromat TechTool Pro 5.0.4 (self-burned on a Gigaware DVD-R)
    - Mac OS X Snow Leopard OEM (bought independent of this machine when Snow Leopard was first released)
I've since tried resetting the SMC by another Apple Support article (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) to see if that helps. My TechTool DVD still won't boot, and I haven't tried the Snow Leopard disc yet, but the CDs that came with the MacBook work fine.
It's also interesting in "how" it "doesn't work".
(By CD in the following points, I mean the TechTool CD):
    1. I insert the CD when the system is running normally. I can install TT, and browse the contents of the CD without issue.
    2. I restart the machine, holding down the Option key. Both my HD and the TT CD appear as bootable options. I select the CD.
    3. I get the grey Apple, but the "spinning wheel" never appears. After a few minutes, all noise from the super drive dies, and the system sits there interminably.
Both the burned TT and Snow Leopard CDs boot just fine on my girlfriends older 13" white MacBook. Any reason why mine would boot some CDs and not others, when the others boot fine on other systems?

  • HELP! MacBook Pro 17" Won't Boot-Grey Screen-Errors During Verbose Safe Mode Boot

Booting regularly it hangs on the grey screen, if it does go into desktop, it freezes and won't do anything.
I did disk check and repair even though it found no errors, and did verify and fix permissions since it showed a LOT of permission errors. Still won't boot into desktop though.
Ran safe mode verbose and got the following disk0s2 I/O Errors-What does this mean??? Hard drive problem?
I have reload OS X 3 times in the past few weeks because of freezing issues in Mavericks and stuck with Mountain Lion and it was running fine until I went to boot up this morning after a clean shut down and won't boot up ever since.

  • I have an eraly 2011 macbook pro that won't boot to dvd

My macbook pro recently started crashing after a few minutes of use, and after doing that a few times it sopped booting to disk and the scrren apeared to be slighty pixalated and in a blue tint rather than the usual grey. I took it to a store that informed me that my logic board was fried. I bought a part on my own and replaced it . After that the computer started booting fine but slower than usual, but when I went into the disk utility and atempted to verify the disk it said that the hard drive needed to be repaired. Unfortunately I had lost the cd that origially came with my laptop so I bought a copy of snow leoppard (which is what I have installed on it) from apple.com. But when I try to boot to the dvd to repair it, it gets stuck on the apple logo and starts beeping in intervals of 3. I tried replacing the hard drive but the same thing happens. It only seems to boot from the original hard drive, I even tried creating an instal thumb drive from that same cd that also won't work.
    Any insight would be helpful,
    Tanks in advance,
    Mike

You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html Another resource:  International Support Phone #s.

  • Help: Macbook Pro Retina won't boot past Grey screen w/ Logo

    All,
My computer died last night with each application not responding. I couldn't shut down normally so I held the power button to turn it off.
Next morning, I tried to boot the MacBook Pro and the boot process stalled at the grey screen with the Apple Logo and spinning wheel. I let it go for an hour and there was no change on the screen. Based on Apple's help desk I ran Hardware diagnostics (extended with looping disabled) and got the following error
    4HDD/11/40000000: SATA (0,0)
    The screen shot is below
I ran this again with standard testing (no looping) and standard with looping and all gave the same results.
Any ideas? The compute will not boot.
    Thank you
    Phillip

That's what I thought but was able to do CMD-R and verify/repair permissions the disk. My hard drive is actually a flash drive so I'm guessing the controller or motherboard.
I do have it backed up with the last 24 hours ago.
    Thanks
    Phillip

I am trying to connect my iPhone 4s bluetooth with my Macbook pro, but it won't let me connect . Sometimes it would say "Andrew's Mac Book is not a supported device" or  "Make sure 'Andrew's Mac Book Pro' is turned on and in range" (My macbook is right next to my phone and its on. You can't connect to your Mac to transfer data via Bluetooth. You can connect your Mac using the Hotspot feature to access the Internet via the iPhone.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 won't boot, grey screen, 10.9.4

Hi guy I hope you are all well,
I have been running a 1.1 MBP Santa Rosa since 2010 and decided it was time for an update, so in January I got hold of a 2008 Penrhyn model. That was running Mavericks absolutely fine until 2 weeks after 10.9.3 when it began to have gfx crashes, kernel panics, refuse to boot etc. Now it won't even turn on, just a low fan noise for 10 secs then it switches itself off.
I figured the Penrhyn was just too long in the tooth now and must have had dodgy hardware. Nothing I've made this year will now work on the Santa Rosa on Snowy so I decided to splash out on a mid-2011 Sandy Beach, 15.4" 2.0ghz i7. This has been absolutely great the last month, until the day I went up to 10.9.4. It began to crash and need rebooting when iPhoto opens after plugging in my iPhone. At first I disabled iPhoto's auto-open and the phone works fine with iTunes and charges when iPhoto is closed. Without the phone plugged in iPhoto worked fine. Inevitably I plugged the phone in last night while iPhoto was still open. The screen went a purple-pattern, I rebooted and now it won't boot past the apple logo and pie-wheel at the chime. It just goes to a grey screen.
Recovery does not work, just a solid blue screen. Booting off a Lion install DVD also just gets a grey screen after the logo/chime. I cleared the PRAM, and the SMC three times. Starting in safe-mode the progress bar loads fine, but then it's back to grey screen.
So I'm now back on my Santa Rosa, which has never had a fault, nor may I add have any of my PPC Macs!
Anyone have a possible solution for this or know what the exact hardware-fault may be? I really don't want to pay Apple to repair it, having spent on over £1000 on MBPs this year that now don't turn on
    Many thanks, James

I've been having similar issues with a late 2011 17" MBP with 10.9.4.  I haven't worked out what the problem is, but I'm eventually able to enter recovery mode after multiple (15-30) attempts.  Between attempts, I tried resetting the PRAM, entering safe mode, entering hardware diagnostics mode, and occasionally just leting it hang on the blue or grey screen.
Repairing disk permissions fixes the problem.  It's happened twice now, with an hour or two of panic between getting it back up and running again.  It's only been since the 10.9.3 or 10.9.4 update, which other users have experienced problems with.  I didn't make a backup before updating (this is the first issue I've ever had with my machine), so I may have to start with a fresh install to determine if it's software or hardware.

  • Macbook Pro 15" won't boot from ANYTHING :( Can't mount internal drive

    Hi there,
I'm new to these forums so please bear with me if I make a faux pas.
A few days ago while watching a movie on my MBP Intel Core 2 Duo 2.5 the beach ball of death appeared and the computer became unresponsive. I restarted to the flashing folder with a question mark.
Tried to boot from the install disk - No joy : Occasionally gets to the language selection screen (after a good 5-8 minute wait) and then instantly and completely freezes. Cursor won't move, caps lock light is unresponsive etc..
Tried to boot from Diskwarrior - Similar to the above. Long wait, boots to the Diskwarrior 'setting up' screen, unresponsive cursor - despite, Diskwarrior seemingly going through the motions (status in text changes, menu bar appears) and then it reports an unexpected error with code 60, 2105 and completely freezes.
Can't boot from a USB flash drive with a clean version of OS X made from my install disk.
Disk won't mount when in target disk mode. However the DVD drive mounts it's contents onto the host machine when it target mode.
I removed the drive last night and placed it in an external enclosure and OS X reports "The disk you've inserted is not recognised et.. "Initialise" "Ignore" "Eject". The drive appears in Disk Utility but all options are greyed out, SMART status says 'not supported' and it's capacity is shown as 0 bytes. The drive registers in the Hardware pane of Diskwarrior but no-where else.
I'm fine with the fact that the drive has failed but could these problems indicate something more serious? I'm concerned that the machine won't boot from any device or media. Is this a symptom of a failed hard drive or could this be a logic board issue?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Thanks all and Happy new Year.
    XOXO

You might try a PRAM reset and see if this does any good.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379?viewlocale=en_US
It sounds like the hard drive itself is toast based on how it looks in an enclosure. So you won't be able to boot from it. Possibly after a PRAM reset you could option boot to a disc or to your external drive.
I had the experience of a failed hard drive totally messing up my PowerMacG4, and it took some doing to get it going again. I finally got it going again, and it has been working ever since without issue.
The MBP is a different machine, but having experienced first hand what a dying hard drive could do, I think it's well worth doing any resets you can.
If no joy, make an appointment at the genius bar and ask them if they can run a hardware test from their store feed. If you do have other issues, they should show up then.
If you end up being able to boot to the optical drive, you could try running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test yourself.
    Good luck!
