my macbook pro 2010 is really laggy and slow any help

Hi..
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop.
Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Freeing Up Hard Disk Space - Mac GuidesFreeing Up Hard Disk Space - Mac Guides
Starting up in Safe Mode deletes system caches that can help also. Keep in mind a Safe Mode boot takes longer then a normal boot so be patient. Once you see the Desktop, click the Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Restart.
And disabling the resume feature can help.
Open System Preferences > General. Deselect:  Reopen windows when quitting and re-opening apps

  • MacBook Pro OSX 10.9.2 running slow, any help?

I recently experienced a slow start up for my MacBook Pro OSX 10.9.2 - hence I tried all possible tests from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2570
I managed to get pass the boot via the safe mode theory, I'm not sure what that means but at least now I can get onto my mac
However, now I'm experiencing a very slow macbook, too slow for me to even use effectively.
I have more than enough available free space on the laptop, its updated to the newest version (I think) and I've seen on other discussions of the biggest culprits to slow the mac: MacKeeper and Chrome (both of which I have now comepletely and thoroughly removed from my laptop)... despite this, it still appears to be very slow. Any help on what to do?
P.s. What's more, I have no idea how to back up my information via TimeMachine (and I am not sure where to get this external drive, any help on this too - I really don't want to loose ALL my files!)

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • My MacBook Pro is acting really strange and unusual

Please read my 3 part chronicle named 'The Tribulations of M. B. Pro'   Pictures featured at end.
I recently showed an apple techy (in-store) a picture of what my laptop displayed the other day and he said he didn't know but I should bring it in asap, he looked worried and slightly frightened for me. This worried me. I feared for the well-being of my Laptop. He also said I could try wiping it clean and reinstalling software via CD, but tried to persuade me to take it in. Frankly, I wondered if any of you clever gents know if I can do anything myself. I shall tell you all I know, its a long story but the details I think are rather important...
So it all started a few months ago, I was surfing the web on my iPhone and a new window popped up claiming to be the 'police' and I was in trouble for illegally downloading stuff. I regrettably copy and pasted the url onto my mac. D:  So it turned out to be fake and tryied to make me pay out and it also tried to give me a virus I think, it said it has encrypted all my files etc. Every time I tried to leave the site a mac popup said are you sure you want to leave and it kept popping up so I couldn't close safari. Eventually it closed, but I was slightly shaken by this dreadful ordeal that we shall from now on call 'The Unworthy Comeuppance', I then downloaded Sophos antivirus software and it scanned to say everything was clean, although it did say 'issues detected but no threats found'. After search the web i concluded this was normal. End of part 1.
    Part 2.
From the beginning of The Unworthy Comeuppance my Laptop has, I believe, slowed down considerably. It most certainly has done from 18 months ago when it was new. Putting this issue aside, however, you will be intrigued to hear the odd predicaments that have become of my much loved MacBook Pro. After resetting Safari and restarting my laptop the following day, I lauched safari only for it to present a jumbley scrambled mixed up mess of scary computer badness, I name it Lucifer. It appeared only for 3 seconds or so, enough to make me poo instantly and be sick all over myself. I soldiered on and all seemed to be well, other than the slowness/not very fastness. Weeks went by, all the while I thought my laptop may have been completely normal. However, one day I launched Safari for who else but Lucifer to reappear! The little **** has shown himself a few times since too, 6 or 7 times in total I think. It has never been an inconvenience or disruption, just a worry. End of part 2.
    Part 3.
Noticing longer start up times and slower performance, I worry what has become of my laptop since The Unworthy Comeuppance. One day after restarting, a few graphics were slightly odd, some icons on the dock were blocks of fizzy colours and the bar at the top changed to black/invisible. The only way this went was after I restarted it again. In addition to this, sometimes when it turns on it makes a wierd noise. Normally makes that du u uuuu duuuuu noise, but it did this twice. I do not mean the duuuuuuuuu mac sound on startup. I mean the sound of the hardware, du u uuuu duuuuu. Generally applications take longer to load, especially iPhoto, but all apps take a while now, as well as slow start up. All of which has lead me to this exact moment where you are reading this right now. End of part 3.

I look forward to your suggestions.

You don't say which year you have, however...
...there are known problems with the mid-2010 models (see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) as well as early and late 15" 2011 models (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0).
Apple has taken ownership of the problems with the 2010 model but, unfortunately, the free logic board replacement for that model has probably long expired for you - three years after date of purchase.
One the 2011 models Apple has admitted no defect. You'll just have to skim the articles to get an overview of the problems that people are having (usually showing up as screen glitches at first and then going downhill from there).
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Energy usage (watt) of MacBook Pro 2010 with 8GB Ram and i7

I think of buying a MacBook Pro with 8GB, i7
(and SSD, but that's not important because it consumes less than HDD)
What is the energy consumption (in Watt) in idle state with display on under
    1) OSX
    2) Win7 (I need this for my job)

Well, I need a computer professionally. At least now.
But I want to keep my environments impact at a minimum.
So I need precise data to evaluate what I do:
money is one thing, because it's usually very finite,
but even more important is recyclability, energy, ...:
    10 Watts difference (e.g. for 8GB instead of 4GB?)
will yield, over mac lifetime of say 10 years (the laptop
im am currently typing on is 8+ years old, but is slowly
going towards being obsolete, even with ISA SSD upgrade):
    10 h/d * 365 d/y * 10 W * 10 y = 365000 Wh = 365kWh.
I try to save energy, so this is approx my direct energy usage
of 1 year (I have no car, do not fly, have no refrigerator,
do not heat my appartement above 10 deg Celcius, ...
    but strangely I have a computer and I am a programmer ...).
For me, it's important. It is relevant for my decisions:
    5 Watts? I will be tempted by 8GB. 10 Watts? I don't know.
(I do setup work, so I use VMs a lot, so I need quite some
    memory for that ...).

  • Why is my MacBook Pro (mid-2012) so unresponsive and slow?

I have been having many huge problems with my MacBook Pro recently. First of all, it takes a minute to two minutes to boot up. Whenever I try to open an application, it usually takes 30 seconds or so to even open, and it remains unresponsive (with that little rainbow wheel) for another good minute. Chrome is really bad, and constantly freezes and doesn't load web pages, excel is a disaster, and I can type about 3 words in Notes before it shows the rainbow wheel for 15 seconds or so. Even when just one app is open, it will still do this. The rainbow wheel even appears when I right click the desktop, open finder, or click the top bar, with no apps open. I did create a partition throug Boot Camp about 6 months ago (I installed Windows 7), but I've deleted it, as I thought that was the problem. I've looked at my Activity Monitor while this is happening, and I've also taken it in to the tech guys at my school (it's a boarding school so they're my only resource). The only suggestion they had was to increase the RAM, so I did, from 4 to 8GB, using modules with the specifications recommended on the Apple site. There has been no noticable difference. The CPU is fine, only using about 5%, until it freezes, where the CPU spikes. Also, I have to manually sleep it, or else it starts getting really hot. I've searched google for a while and did everything I hadn't tried, like repairing the disk and permissions through disk utility. I use my laptop for everything, and it is necesary to have for many of the classes at this school, but when it freezes every 15 seconds and can't even open a folder without giving a rainbow wheel, it's very hard to use. Getting a new laptop is out of the question, as I could barely afford this one, so I'm kind of desparate. Any suggestions or help would be great.

  • I recently reinstalled OSX 10.6.8 on my mac pro, and also reinstalled my data from time machine. However I do not have system dis 2, as a result a lot programms do not work. I tried unsuccessfully disc 2 from another macbook pro with OSX 10.6.8. Any help?

I recently replaced the hard disk on my macbook pro. As I had lost my original system disks that came with my mac, I paid an authorised Apple Reseller to reinstall OX 10.6.8 and also they reinstalled the data from my Time Machine back up. However, I have noticed a lot of functions no longer work. I was told by Apple Reseller that they only installed system disk I (operating system), but not system disk II (programme disk), as they do not have that disk. I was advised to use Disk II from any macbook pro with an OS 10.6.8 or higher..... I tried that but it did not work as mac would not read that disk. Can anyone please help me solve this problem?

Rosetta is an Add-On that has to be selected during the install of OS X. It is not installed by default. IIRC during the initial install sequence you have to select Custom or Customize and then select Rosetta...
Or, it the OP's paid technician missed it the first time, he can mount the OS X install DVD on the desktop, open the Optional Installs folder, double click on the Optional Installs .mpkg, and step through the process until arriving at the "Installation Type." There, the OP can check off Rosetta, iPod Support, Qucktime, Printer Support, more fonts, and a bunch of Applications, including Address Book, iCal, iChat, iTunes, Mail, Dictionaries, Safari, and X11 for installation. Both those installs and whatever is on Disk 2 can be installed without starting from scratch.
And while having the original installer DVD's that came with the Mac is the best way to go, the OP can download the 10.6.8 combo updater and run that. Since it's an all purpose updater, it configures itself for the Mac it's run on so, in a sense, it's customization after the fact. If the combo updater is run before Disk 2 is available, it can be run again afterwards. Indeed, I've found that the combo updater can fix problems which normally would call for a reinstallation of the OS; not always but sometimes.

  • Macbook pro 2010 i7 model. will not load any osx installer. usb cd or internet recovery.

Ok so I am computer savvy. I own a Pc repair store where I live. I got this macbook pro in that has me puzzled. I tried all the resets. New hard drive new ram etc. Nothing seems to work. It will not reload any osx. Internet recovery goes through the initial download then just sticks on spinning wheel for hours. I also have disk warrior and it does load from cd and usb however it takes forever to load it. Any other suggestions and please trust me I have did all of the resets and everything that I could possibly find on google. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks.

How do you know that?  Any one responding to your post cannot know exactly what you have tried, only you can.  In essence that is not very informative.  Do not take this as an affront, it is simply a statement of fact.
Do you have the original Snow Leopard installations disks?  Have you tried to boot the MBP with them?
Be advised that an error free Apple Hardware Test is not definitive.

  • My MacBook Pro randomly logs me out and in. HELP!

My MacBook Pro 3.1 (late'07) is randomly logging me off when it is under load. Like running Lightroom, Safari stuff like that.
It also happens, when the MBP is running for a couple of hours and I play a video in VLC or Safari and maximize it.
The display turns all of the sudden blue (the blue you see, when you start your Mac), logs me off and instantly on.
All Programs are closed, no work is secured.
    It's like his problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgCccEXLsrE
    But mine occurs more randomly
In another forum someone said that the WindowServer could be the problem. But I can't find any solution.
Reinstalling the system did not change anything
Another symptom was also a flickering display (both, the external and the build in) and a total freeze.
I don't think that it runs to hot because the MacBook is on a stand and it has also happened in winter.
The Logic board has been exchanged twice because of the Nvidea GPU failure.
    Please Help!

Yep! It's' a known problem I'm afraid, very common indeed with that card. Nothing that can be done AFAIK.
I would be getting my soldering iron out if I were you

  • Scrolling is really laggy and slow

For a week or so I've noticed that my scrolling is really slow and laggy on some sites. A site most often visited that makes my scrolling really slow is youtube. Has anyone found a solution to fix this? Was it maybe due to an update?

    Hello everyone!
User Hakaitz of the Apple Support Communities has worked out a solution, that has helped me getting my old Mac performance back. It involves installing the graphics drivers from Snow Leopard in Lion.
This performance bug really annoyed me to no ends... Here's what user Hakaitz says in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3198002?start=45&tstart=0:
There is a fix for this problem.
I just load with kext helper, the Snow Leopard Kexts from version 10.6.2 for the Radeon.
End of stutters on laggy animations on any version of lion. Works on 7.1 and 8.1 imacs (at least).
    Here the fix:
    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=11INQM1D
How to use ONLY RADEON 2600 USERS:
    execute kext helper
drag and drop this files ONLY:
    ATIFramebuffer.kext
    ATISupport.kext
    ATI2600Controller.kext
put your admin password and click on "easy install". I tooks a while to do the work. When finished, reboot (the kext helper aaaaalways hangs, its normal.
After that reboot your computer wont stutter anymore.
    Hope it helps!

  • My macbook pro retina gets very hot and slow

whenever i use my macbook pro retina for an extended amount of time 1-2 hours watching videos online or playing games it gets very hot, starts lagging and gets unresponsive, i can only use it with a fan underneath basically, my old macbook pro had a similar problem, it took like 3 weeks of them checking it to find a problem which took them another couple of weeks to fix, i cannot be without my laptop for any extended period of time. fans inside seem to be working fine, but it still get incredibly hot... please help!!!

Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity

  • Xperia z gone really laggy and slow suddenly

Hi, ive been using my xperia z with kitkat for a while now and suddenly its become very slow and laggy. Even after complete reset twice, its still the same. As im typing this on the xperia z. The letters come on screen a second after i type. Thia happens in every app i use. Scrolling gone laggy as well.
Another thing i noticed is when i watch a youtube video which has been embedded in artical for example some articles on feedly. Video has gone laggy there as well, i have to put it to full screen for it to play smoothly. It was perfectly fine before.
In conclusion, tbe whole phone has gone slow and laggy and even a factory reset doesnt fix it. What cN i do?

Hello, I'm having the same problem. It's laggy, and booting takes a while, when my phone has booted it gives a black screen for 2 mins. or something like that, when I boot to safe mode I still have the problems, it's a little less than when not booting to safe mode but it's still slow and laggy even though I just did a clean install using Flashtool and XperiFirm. EDIT: I did a clean install using XperiFirm and Flashtool a couple of weeks ago, everything was fine, until last night. From one moment to another my phone was laggy, slow, and the apps crashed and took hours to open, if they did. Tried the same fresh install this morning, it's a little less laggy, but it's still laggy with the factory set apps. Before I did the fresh install I had my phone charged to 100% of battery, 6 hours later, the battery was at 37% even though I haven't used it at all.

  • Macbook pro retina is really hot and fans were very loud

I have a 15 inch retina display btw.
I was on safari reading an article and had itunes music playing in the background and my fans suddenly became increasingly loud (has never happened before).
Loud enough that I could hear it above the music. If it helps my Macbook is currently charging as well. The charger itself is pretty hot as well.
Here are my temperatures, I'm not sure whats normal and what is out of the ordinary.
    Thanks

Are these ºF or ºC? If the former they would seem OK. If the latter shut down the computer ASAP.
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
