My macbook pro 2011 charging indicator is acting weird.  Help please?

A few weeks ago my on screen charging indicator started acting funny.  Normally it takes my macbook around 2 hours to charge fully.  However, sometimes the indicator says anywhere upwards of 4 hours.  Furthermore, sometimes the indicator keeps switching back from the charging symbol to not charging.  Why is this happening?  Here is my power info:

How does it look?  Could the problem be in the mag safe charger or the computer itself?
Thanks for the help.

Try Troubleshooting the MagSafe adapter
Thanks for that link.  It did provide some diagnostic tools to see if the adapter is the culprit.  I don't believe mine is.  My situation, MacBook Pro 8,2 - early 2011, 2.3 GHz i7.  I'm experiencing, while on the adapter, after the battery charges to 100% a slow drop (while connected to the power adapter) to 98%, 97%, etc.  Unplugging the adapter for a bit will again bring it back up to 100% but it again starts to drop.  I don't think it's the battery - have good on battery performance (in bare bones boot - a special user with no StartUp items) I can get 5-7 hours.  I suspect the power adapter - one glaring issue: I have a CAT who thought it cute to chew on the cable but I couldn't tell if it was superficial or had actually damaged the wires inside past the protective sheath.  I suspect this could be the issue and have ordered a new adapter.  My wife suggested coating the cable with lemon juice to make it less tempting for the cat to bite on.  This isn't the first cable this cat (never caught "red handed") has chose to chew on.  My Jawbone charge cable was completely severed.  I took measures to make the cables less accessible but the damage had already been done to the Mag Safe Power Adapter.  As I said, my monthly "battery exercise" fully charges the battery - it is this mysterious battery percentage drop that has me wondering.  I read somewhere that some are blaming Mountain Lion, I'm not so quick to do so until I get the new adapter.
This post may have been better off in a new topic, but since we're talking about the Mag Safe Power Adapter I thought it would be okay here, especially since the link to the KB article gave me ideas on what to look for.  The pins in the cable were all up, I presume the middle pin is different and will look different as to its height compared to the two outboard/inboard pins, yes?  There was no issue with the laptop end of the connector.  I did not switch out the "duck head" with the long cord though.  With the cable damage issue I thought I'd wait and see.  Now that I think of it I could have borrowed my wife's adapter - same MBP, almost, but should both have the 85w adapter.  We'll see...

  • Macbook Pro 2011 charging behaving weird.  Charges and stops repeatedly and takes very long.  Help?

So a few weeks ago my MacBook Pro 2011 started having charging problems.  I would use it normally.  Then plug it in to charge anywhere between 5-20 percent like I've been doing for the past year that I've had it (since August 2011).  Anyway, what happens now is that it charges but extremely slowly - at least 4 hours to fully charge as opposed to the 1 1/2 to 2 hours that it used to take.  Also, it seems to be draining a lot quicker than it used to while only browsing the internet.  Furthermore, while charging, the battery meter goes from the percent its charged to to "not charging" back and forth.  What's going on?  Is there a problem with my battery, my computer, or the magsafe charger?  [please refer to the pictures below to get a better understanding of my problem - these pictures were taken over a 2 hour time period - a time period that usually is enough to charge my computer] - if you'll notice, in the first two pictures, the percent barely went up by 10 in a half hour period:

try doing a SMC RESET and see if that sorts it out for you.
if doesn't work - better take it to Apple and have them look at it before something else goes wrong...

  • Macbook pro 2011 13" i5 slowed down, any help would be much appreciated (detailed info).

Ok first off let me preface with as much detailed information as possible, as i have read many many posts on problems and hopefully mine will be detailed enough to not cause all you wonderful people a headache.
    Machine Details
    Macbook Pro 13inch model  (2011)
    Core i5 4gb RAM 250gb Standard harddrive
As I am a very inexperienced I would very much appreciate a very idiot proof explaination, but any help I will be very thankfull for.
The laptop was running like a dream and much better than I remembered my last mac (Macintosh LC) ever did. Ive had minor hickups this last year (a trackpad that went bust under warranty and a broken power supply) otherwise its been a wonderfull experience. The final hiccup that might be a cause, not sure hence I will mention it is that my battery is Conditon: Replace Now for about a month now.
The laptop, as always was left ON, on its own connected to the wifi home network, when I returned the computer was working very slow. Any load on the harddrive/CPU. The cursor starts lagging (jumping), any keypresses are registered with a 2-10second delay. Any vidoes that i would try to play would suffer freezes in framerates/jams but audio remained fine. First step i was afraid that i may have contracted one of the new trojans so i downloaded an antivirus program, scanned the drive, but came out clean. Second step was to format the drive and perform a fresh install of OSX but no luck. Being inexperienced in Apple products i assumed that my harddrive (used to PCs) was on the fritz and went out and bought a 160gb Western Digital Black series 2.5inch harddrive. Having read all the guides and official knowledge bases on how to swap out the harddrive I did so with success. I placed in my installation OS 10.6 CD formatted the drive through the disk utility and performed a fresh install. Before doing any steps I went through the update cycle a couple of times till only the thunderbolt update remained (havent updated as I never used it). Sadly it hasnt solved the problems with cursor repsonse lag, video playback, and keyboard input lag under load.
On this install I have performed:
Verify Disk Permissions Many were found so I performed Repair Disk Permissions
Verify Disk Came up with "Appears to be OK"
    performed a Pram reset (CMD+option +P +R)
My main problem is that I live in europe nowadays (Poland to be precise) and cant go to a genius bar as they dont exist, and sadly the support is a tad behind the US standards and any minor repair will be at least a 4 week wait, hence i would like to try to exhaust possible solutions before giving it off to professionals: being a month out of the warranty period has abit to do with it too:)
Sorry for the wall of text
Thanks guys for any help you could throw my way!

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior.  Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.

    Helpful Links Regarding Flashback Trojan
Visit Thomas Reed's site for insight and help: Mac Malware Guide
A Google search can reveal a variety of alternatives on how the remove the trojan should your computer get infected. This can get you started. However, be careful about what you do as new variants of the malware circumvent the efforts of earlier tools.
Also see Apple's article About Flashback malware.
Apple has released Java updates for Snow Leopard and Lion users:
Java for OS X Lion 2012-003; available only for users of Lion with Java installed.
Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 8; available only for users of Snow Leopard.
Flashback malware removal tool; available only for users of Lion without Java installed.
Install whichever shows up in Software Update. It removes the malware (if present), updates Java (if present) and tightens up Java settings for the future.  You may download from Apple's web site instead of using Software Update, but it's important to know which one to get, because the other two won't work for you.
For the truly paranoid see 10 Simple Tips for Boosting The Security Of Your Mac.
However, I find it hard to understand the problems you describe on a computer if you erased the drive and reinstalled a fresh copy of OS X.

  • Late MacBook Pro's built in iSight acting weird (goes thru color cycle)

I got my late MacBook Pro 2.4, and it was all good, and during one of my iChat video conferences the other person informed me that my video was acting strange. It was going through a color cycle (green, red, yellow, etc), you could see my image but it would cycle through each color very very fast and non-stop.
I had the unit replaced, got the new one, and it all seemed perfect, until last night, the color cycle started up for about 3 seconds and stopped again. What could be the problem? Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be a software thing?
    Thanks.

I had the same problem. After a few seconds of the color cycle it would go to black. This was on any program using the iSight including Skype, Photo Booth and iChat.
They replaced my display/iSight and it's fine now.

  • Macbook Pro 2010 Slowing down and acting weird for no apparent reason.

I got this computer in September 2010 new from apple. Macbook Pro 15", 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5. memory: 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 build: 10J869 version 10.6.7
Recently it seems to have hit a wall (running very slow). When I try to open any program it takes 10 times longer than normal...Always beach balling. This isn't normal. I have not been running many programs besides firefox and itunes lately. And The occasional Word Processor document. Sometimes when I type the computer will go very slow letter by letter. (it takes a few seconds to type one word) Also, sometimes it will work normally. I haven't had any weird error messages. Although, just a few minutes ago I was in Firefox and the words at the top of the screen vanished. (File Edit View History Bookmarks Tools Window-----all disappear)
Please help, the computer is not very old, I don't understand why this is happening.

A slow computer can be caused by a multitude of issues. The first thing I'd try is to check in Activity Monitor (Application - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and run it while you are doing your normal computing, what I'd recommend looking for are 2 things:
    1. Look to see if there is an application or applications that is taking a lot of %CPU. For example if you noticed FireFox or iTunes using 85% of your CPU that is a huge red flag something is wrong.
    2. Next click the System Memory tab towards the bottom and see how much FREE RAM you have during normal computing. If it's 500MB or below then your system is starved for RAM.
Report back what you find and then we can test some other items.

  • My Macbook Pro with 8600m gt is acting weird

I run Windows 7 on my Macbook Pro. About a week ago, I was playing a game and I realised that it was stuttering a lot, more than usual. So I opened up GPU-Z and I saw that the 8600m gt was set at PCI Express x1 instead of x16. Is there any way to fix this or is this a symptom of the well-known 8600m problem?

You have the Mac with the failing Nvidia 8600 graphic chip. Please read this Apple KB article.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2377
If it is less then 4 year old from date of purchase take it to a Apple Genius Bar TODAY. Do not wait because if it fails completely they will not fix it.
If it is over 4 years old, like one day over 4 years old, you will be faced with paying for the repair yourself or buying a new computer. If that is the case, you have to pay for the repair, buy anything other then a Mac. JMO.

  • 2 Macbook Pros don't see D-Link signal help please

Hoping someone might be able to help.
I have two macbook pros, and at work both connect without problem to my Dlink DIR300 router (the second I power up it connects...)
The problem begins when I get home, and both macbooks don't see the signal for the router, it's broadcasting normally, iphone and other pcs connect without problem (always) just the two macbooks never see the signal even when standing right next to the router... I bought a new router same model, worked a little and then same symptoms...
Is there any setting on the router that might be effecting something? the same model at work works perfectly...
    Any help greatly appreciated...

do you know what encryption is being used?
    is the same at work?

  • Handoff isn't working at all on my Macbook Pro or iPhone 6. I need help please.

I updated all my stuff but Handoff and Continuity are not working at all.
I have been through it all with setting everything up how it says. YES BLUETOOTH IS ON!

What MacBook Pro year do you have?  It has to be at least Mid-2012 per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6337 for Continuity/Handoff to work.

  • Macbook pro accidentally deleted os and cant reinstall help please

my macbook pro 2013 had a white screen and loading bar i looked it up and tried to fix it in command R menu and accidentally deleted everything osx mountian lion and all it completley reformattd the hard drive and will not reinstall mountian lion or mavericks it says seek apple care any ideas?

    jurisprudence410,
if you’ve completely deleted everything on the internal disk, including your recovery partition, then you should be able to use OS X Internet Recovery to redownload your MacBook Pro’s original version of OS X from Apple’s servers. If you still have your recovery partition, then you can try holding down Option Command R while starting your MacBook Pro to have OS X Internet Recovery start.

  • Macbook Pro 2011 Charging (Battery)

Hi, I have a few questions about the charging.
I want to know how to not ruin your battery and how long do you charge it for, etc.
Never had a laptop if someone can explain, it would be good.

Don't let it sit in a fully discharged state, other than that not much.

  • MACBOOK PRO 15" EARLY '11 CRASHED AFTER RECORDING HELP PLEASE

    Hello everyone,
Thankyou for reading. Let me start by explaining the situation. Im a university student studying music, and I was in the university studio for a few hours recording vocal tracks for an assignment I've been working on. I was using the latest version of mountain lion, Cubase Artist 6.5, with Steinberg CI2+ audio interface and an M-audio Solaris condenser. Everything went fine, with no issues, until the time to packup came. I disconnected everything in order, lowering all volumes, switching off phantom power, shutting off cubase, disconnecting mic, and disconnecting audio interface. That's where the problem began, as soon as I disconnected the usb cable of the CI2+ the computer immediately crashed bringing a grey screen that I had never seen before. I don't recall word for word what it wrote but it was something along the lines of "Your computer has crashed, press any button to continue" and it restarted with an error message which I am pasting here. I couldn't send the error message due to lack of internet there so I copied it here. Everything since has been working fine however, and no files were lost (So no hard disk damage)

In the first paragraph I can spot a "
Fault CR2: 0x00000001018ee000, Error code: 0x0000000000000000, Fault CPU: 0x4" is my cpu damaged?!?
As you can all probably relate, I'm very sensitive to my macbook and errors. I still have around a month and a half left of my warranty. I want to ask the community, is this something I should look into? If anyone official could also answer this I would be deeply grateful.
Also another thing: My charger wouldnt fit into the sockets at the studio since it was a 3-socket type and mine is 2-socket, so I borrowed a friends charger which could be plugged in. His macbook pretty much looked like mine, 2010, 2011 probably. What I recall is the slow charging with this new charger, could this have possibly also lead up to this?
Thankyou deeply for replies. I appreciate it. Hopefully its nothing too bad..

if/when it crashes again check error message for this string:
    Kernel Extensions in backtrace:
             com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(5.4)[C3094550-7F58-3933-A4F7-CD33AE83F8B9]@0xffffff 7fafdfa000->0xffffff7fafe50fff
it will be in first part. If it repeats - your USB-connected device creates problems, may be you should go their site for new drivers.
Or just disconnect it and take a look - will there be new crashes?
And before everything boot from recovery, run disk utilities and repair drive, then repair permissions.

  • Macbook pro froze and now wont boot up - Help please

    Hi
The issue randomly occurred when I was on Google chrome and I wanted to move an app that was downloaded in the wrong place. I went to click finder and it wouldn't open, tried system preferences it wouldn't open. It also wouldn't let me use any of the functions on the menu bar so I was pretty much stuck, however I could still use chrome. After which I closed the lid which enabled sleep mode. Just now I went to open it from sleeping and all there was, was a black screen and my mouse cursor.
I couldn't do anything, even the keyboard shortcuts and had to force shut down by holding the power button.
After which I was greeted with the following screen:
    http://imgur.com/EzuzPSW
I didn't press anything and I noticed that my mac kept rebooting and kept showing that screen. Instead of leaving it I pressed a key and this came up:
    http://imgur.com/l9Q1mgg
That screen would come up for roughly 3 seconds then it would reboot showing this screen again
    http://imgur.com/EzuzPSW
After about 3 times of auto rebotting this screen came up:
    http://imgur.com/G1G4Fj7
And now all that appears when I turn the system on is this:
    http://imgur.com/EzuzPSW
When I press a key I get this
    http://imgur.com/l9Q1mgg
it reboots and this keeps repeating.
Can anybody explain this issue ? I take it, its a HDD problem is there anyway I can save my data still or is it lost ?

Your MBP is suffering kernel panics.
    Try SMC and PRAM resets:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
    Then try a Safe Boot:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
If no success, try to access the recovery partition:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1310
Select the recovery partition.  From the 4 option menu, select Disk Utility>First Aid and run Verify and Repair.
    What are the results?
    Ciao.

  • I have a macbook pro after downloading yosemite software everything crashes help please.

My computer takes a long time to turn on sometimes it does not even turn on... all my app from my mac crashes my adobes programs safari freezes a lot my google chrome wont even work....
    what to do ? please.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
