When I play games like StarCraft 2 on my MacBook Pro (without my Thunderbolt Display connected), the game runs GREAT
When I play games like StarCraft 2 on my MacBook Pro (with my Thunderbolt Display connected), you notice the mouse responding slower (I even lowered the graphics settings to it's lowest and still get the same results)
When I play games like Safari on my MacBook Pro (without my Thunderbolt Display connected), the game runs GREAT
When I play games like Safari on my MacBook Pro (with my Thunderbolt Display connected), you notice the mouse responding slower
The above happens with any application. This even occurs after a fresh reboot. i unplugged all my periphals from my MacBook Pro and Thunderbolt Display
I updated my OS and applications.
I monitor Activity Monitor and notice nothing unsual about runaway processes.
Just so everyone knows. This is a 2011 MacBook Pro.

I have the same exact model as you, as well as an Apple Thunderbolt Display. I don't play any games, so I wouldn't notice any degradation there but I do run a lot of GPU/CPU/RAM intensive apps and have experienced no problems with the TB display connected.
We have the same configuration, OS, everything. We may just be running different apps. I do have 16GB of RAM and a SSD so that may mean that I'm just not able to notice any slowdown at all.
I'm not sure what your problem might be - I would suggest contacting AppleCare to see if they've documented problems such as the one you're having.

My MacBook Pro will not powerup (even when connected to power supply). The caps lock key is the only light on.

    Hi PatB11902,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your MacBook Pro does not seem to power on, but the caps lock key will light up when you press the caps lock key, you are likely seeing a video issue.
There are several steps that can help troubleshoot this behavior, found at this link:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
    Start with these steps:
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Start up in Safe Mode.
If your Mac does not start up normally after these steps, here are some additional tips that can help:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on - Apple Support
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.
If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).
Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).
    Sincerely,
    Jeremy

Same problem here. Way to go with regression testing, Apple.

  • Is it possible to connect a MacBook Pro (prev model 2009, 2.26ghz) to an Apple Thunderbolt display:  will the cable fit?

Is it possible to connect a MacBook Pro (prev model 2009, 2.26ghz) to an Apple Thunderbolt display:  will the cable fit?

Sorry it won't work.  It will fit but the laptop can't communicate with it.  Please see many of the other threads here, specifically this one just above your post, that is discussing this exact question.
Apple's specs for the ThunderBolt display state that it needs a ThunderBolt-enabled computer.  Your laptop has a mini-display port connection so it is not compatible with the new displays.

  • MacBook Pro Retina hangs on startup when connected to Thunderbolt Display

I have a MacBook Pro Retina and it's basically almost always connected to my Thunderbolt Display. Each time I start it up, I open the MacBook just slightly and press the power button - and almost instantly the MacBook goes ontop the startup Login screen and at this point is where I close the MacBook and login through the Thunderbolt Display.
Since last night for the very first time - My MacBook Pro hangs on a white screen and takes a long time before going to the Login screen. I've tried to swith the Thunderbolt Display off from the mains - I've also tried to boot up my MacBook on it's own without it being connected to the Thunderbold Display and all is fine (it almost immediatelly shows the Apple logo and then staright onto the Login screen then BUT as explained, as soon as the MacBook is connected to the Thunderbolt Display and I power it up - it hangs on a white screen for about 30 - 60 seconds before it goes to the login screen!
I have no idea how from one day to the next this could happen? Perhaps it's some Apple updates I've made recently which I cant really recall because I usually just update software when required to do so.
    Hoping anyone can help.

    Hello FunkTunes,
I recommend this section of the article Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573.
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
Try unplugging the video adapter or cable and then plug it back in.
If more than one video adapter is in use (or "daisy-chained"), troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolutionStart by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • My cursor on my MacBook Pro has been freezing up in a weird way, usually when connected to the Thunderbolt display: the cursor can still move around, but I can't click on anything and have to reboot

I ran EntreCheck in case this is helpful in diagnosing the problem:

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode.  Shut down the computer and then power it back up. • MacBook Pro getting really hot when connected to a Thunderbolt display

    Hi everybody,
I had this problem since I can remember, when I connect my MBP to the Thunderbolt display the laptop is getting hot and the CPU-Fan is working preatty laud.
I had to turn radio on because it is quite anoying
    Here some technical data:
    MacBook Pro 15-inch, Late 2011
Processor  2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
    Serial Number  C0******V7L
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)
    SDD: Crucial M4 CT512M4SSD2 2.5" 512GB SATA III
I don't have any haevy programs running but, I think, also the load average is a bit high. In most cases around 2.0 But when it is not connected to the display it's not getting that hot.
Any idea what the problem may be? Or maybe it's jus normal?
    Regards,
    Radek

I'm seeing similar behavior when I disconnect my TBD. My Retina MBP doesn't go to sleep. I get to work an hour later and it is very hot to the touch.
I'm not seeing lots of people complaining, so I wonder if it's something weird I do. Do you have VMWare Fusion or XQuartz running when you try and sleep?

  • My Macbook Pro with Remakes funny noise when connected to power supply cable and no other response. The best description of the sound I can give is the buz the computer makes on startup. Sound goes on and off while connected

I am new to the Macbook community. I own this Macbook since 10/2012.
My Macbook Pro 15 with Retina Display suddenly totally stopped responding. No display, no activity on keyboard. When I connect power supply cable, the Mac makes a noise as if it is starting up, but this lasts a second and this sound comes and goes the whole time the power cable is connected.
    Any advice?

  • HT5313 Since upgrading to 10.7.5, I can't use headphones on my Macbook Pro (with retina display) when connected to a Thunderbolt Display.  Anybody else?  Any solutions?

When I connect my headphones to my Macbook Pro, the sound continues to come through the Thunderbolt display instead of the headphones.  Any help would be appreciated.

To prevent your iPhone from automatically syncing when you plug it in, click on iTunes in the menu bar, then preferences, then "devices", then tick "prevent iPhones, iPad's and iPod's from syncing automatically".
Plug it in, then on the iPhone sync summary screen, click "info" along the top.
Make sure the "sync contacts" option is not ticked. as long as it's not ticked, then it won't sync with your mac's contacts but will still include them in backups.
Also, if you use iCloud, make sure that the iPhone/mac are either not signed into the same account, or that "contacts" is not turned on for both of them

    Hello
Suddenly my 2 year old MacBook Pro will only boot if the charger is connected, if I disconnect the charger while the computer is running, the screen dims after about four seconds then it dies completely. Puzzling since the battery still seems to be healthy. Any ideas before I take it to the shop? I've been running Snow Leopard with no problems for three months and there are no peripherals attached.

  • MacBook Pro's Color LCD "shifts" when connected to external display?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro with the hi-res anti-glare screen. I just noticed that the internal color LCD "shifts" its colors when I connect it to an external display (a Dell 2408 WFP). If I disconnect the external display, the colors internal color LCD go back to "normal".
I have two images to show what I mean:
This is what it looks like with the external display disconnected i.e. the MacBook Pro on its own: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/vazexqi/4558641163/sizes/l/>
This is what it looks like with the external display connected: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/vazexqi/4559271260/sizes/l/>
The wallpaper is from pixelgirlpresents.com. I didn't notice this problem before with my older 2006 Core Duo MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.7).
My guess is that with the external display connected, somehow the color LCD decides to use the external display's profile as well (instead of its own).
Any ideas on why this is happening? And, more importantly, any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks.
    Nick

@Stefan: Thanks for the tip. I tried it but unfortunately it didn't solve the issue. The color is still off.
Incidentally, just out of curiosity, I tried these two things:
    1) I tried the "Mirror Displays" option in the Displays Preference Pane. With this option enabled, both displays actually displayed the right colors (right with respect to how each display is calibrated).
    2) I opened the same desktop wallpaper in Preview. Whenever I drag the Preview window so that it spans/crosses both displays (external and Color LCD), there is a light flicker in the wallpaper in the Preview Window. For that brief moment, I can see that the color is right before it changes to the shifted color on the Color LCD.
I found a possibly related thread on a different forum <http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37841>. That doesn't seem to help when both displays are connected.
Now, I am just wondering if this is considered normal - wonky color shifts between the desktop/different windows happen when you have two displays connected....
    Nick
PS: Note that I am not a graphics designer so my definition of right/wrong is just based on my experience looking at the wallpaper and remembering what it should look like on each display by itself.

  • My MacBook pro will not turn on after connecting to an external display

I connected my MacBook pro to a projector for a presentation using a VGA adapter. It worked for a couple of minutes, then my computer shut off and I can not turn it back on. It has never given any trouble before then. Now when I try to turn it on, the white led comes on briefly, then it makes a tone and nothing happens, the screen stays dark, any idea what is wrong????

  • MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011) doesn't wake the thunderbolt display after sleep

for some reason the display when connected to clamshell macbook pro 17" doesn't wake up when i go to wake up the display from sleep mode.
    what is going on?

The other day I got the blue screen, the fan going on high, and then when I disconnect my thunderbolt connection from my macbook pro - i get a shutdown.
Today I got flickering followed by the fan on high and then again I disconneced my thunderbolt cable and after a minute or two a shudown.
This never happened before.  Actually I was suprised to hear about a firmware update for flickering since that's never happened to me but since updating I now get the flicker.
Any ideas??  Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my work labtop.

  • 2013 13" Retina Macbook Pro won't resume properly when connected to external display

Have a lovely new 13" Retina macbook,
When it's connected to my display by a displayport->hdmi adapter and the lid is shut if the laptop sleeps then it will not resume properly. I get a black screen, or a blue screen with a cursor, and I have to reset the macbook to use it again.
Without the display connected it works fine every time ( by lifting the lid ).
    Any Ideas?

Had a chat with apple support, and this got fixed
Solution was a SMC controller reset
