A: my MacBook Air becomes unresponsive when logging in, and I decided to reinstall OS X Lion. When running the installer from OS X Recovery, it gave the error message "An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again."

I encountered the same exact problem when I attempted to re-installed OSX Lion on an old laptop. The date was set back in 2000, which rendered the certificate obsolete. Here's how I fixed it:
From the recovery menu, select the Terminal application. Run the 'date' command to confirm the date is wrong, then set the correct date using this command: date {month}{day}{hour}{minute}{year}
e.g. date 1219195613
Exit terminal (type exit). Retry the installation.

i already reinstall the software many times and still the same i dont know what is happening is there is somebody who can help me please im will waiting

There are any number of possibilies... you could have problems with runaway applications, causing your machine to overheat and setting the fans off, you could have bad fan sensors, etc.
Open Activity Monitor (Applications>Utilities) and see if you have any apps that may be hogging the CPU. Call back.

  • RAM Used up quickly, Macbook Pro Becomes Slow

Over the past week or so I've noticed my Macbook Pro getting increasingly slower as the day goes by. Looking in activity monitor, my free RAM is often under a couple hundred MBs - and too often below 50MB. Figuring that I just had to clear up some inactive RAM left over from other programs, I purged the inactive RAM, but only to have it get used up again within minutes.
This hasn't ever been a problem to me in the past year that I've had my Macbook Pro, but now it becomes unresponsive very quickly. As an experiment, I booted up my laptop, and even then I had less than a GB of free RAM (never had that little upon bootup before). The only programs I have setup to start on boot are iTunes Helper, Caffiene, and Mail (Hidden). This hasn't changed in at least six months, so I know it's not one of these causing the RAM hogging.
Here is a log of my current Activity Monitor stats- after rebooting about an hour ago, the only programs I've opened were Chrome, iTunes, and Firefox. Everything was fine for a few minutes, then I noticed severe slow down and massive RAM loss, in addition to the cooling fans exceeding 6000rpm for a short while. Does anything here look abnormal?
*I should also note that I've verified the startup disk and repaired permissions, and the Page in/Page Out ratio is fine.

Thomas - yes, the page outs are less than 10% of the page ins, your site was actually what made me take a look at that haha. The reason that I'm concerned about my free RAM is that it has never been this low, and I like having a certain amount of RAM free when I run certain programs (ex. Ableton Live, a music production program, where ~500MB of RAM is needed to load some drum samples).
I had just installed Sophos Anti-Virus a few hours before my post, so that's probably running at startup along with a few others, which I will have to take a look at. Are there any other startup processes that you noticed that I should look into?
Lastly, I installed Final Cut Pro 7 about a week and a half ago. I only open it maybe three days out of the week, so I didn't think that's what would be causing it. However, there may be some background processes that are running even when the actual program isn't running. Can you spot anything like that?
updating the Mac OS X version was the fix for it.
I eventually will udgrade to Mountain Lion, but I would like to get this fixed first. I'm also looking at buying more RAM, but up until recently, 4GB was working fine. I couldn't have everything running, but the programs that I did have open ran fine.
Simple stop leaving program open that you are done using. Make sure you close the Program and not just close the window that the program is using. By default most Mac programs do not close when you close the window they are using. You have to manual close, Quit, those programs.
That's the thing though- I always close programs that I am not using (cmd+q, not just closing the window). I come from a Windows background, so closing a program entirely became a quick habit of mine!

  • MacBook Pro often unresponsive in Mountain Lion. Should I upgrade to Mavericks?

Hi, I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard about a month ago. Since then, my MacBook Pro has often become unresponsive, giving me the spinning beach ball -- or doing nothing at all -- when I have just a few applications running. (Typically, these may be Mail, Safari, iTunes and sometimes Adobe Lightroom 5.) I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with a 2.7GHz Intel Core i7 and 4GB of factory-installed RAM. It was a snappy performer in Snow Leopard. I'm wondering now if I should try upgrading to Mavericks, and perhaps get a boost from the memory compression. Or will this potentially take whatever problems are slowing me down now and make them worse? Interested to hear your opinions, thanks.

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal.

  • Acrobat X Pro becoming unresponsive

About 2 months ago, I got a new laptop and used the Migration Assistant to transfer all of my files and apps from the older MacBook Pro running OS10.6 to the new MacBook Pro running OS10.8.  Everything was working well until about a week ago when my Adobe Acrobat X Pro (v10.1.7) started to freeze on me. Without warning.  I would need to do a “force quit” and re-launch Acrobat, and then it would work for a few more operations.  Now, it has gotten to the point where the program becomes unresponsive almost immediately and can’t be used.  I haven’t installed any new software recently, so I don’t think I’ve somehow created a conflict, and since Acrobat was working normally for 2 months, I don’t think the problem involves using my current version with OS10.8.  Do you have any suggestions?  For example, should I uninstall the current version of Acrobat X (as well as my previous Acrobat 8, which is still on the machine), and then reinstall Acrobat X from my old disk and do a software update to bring my version of the software back up to date?   Thanks.

If you were on a PC, I would suggest you go to Help>Repair. Apparently the MAC does not have that option. There was a post recently about repairs on a MAC version with posts from Phillip Jones. You might want to look for his posts.

  • Macbook Pro becoming less responsive

I've had my macbook pro for a relatively short time, since mid June 2009, and it has ran fantastically with no problems until very recently. It wasn't directly after I installed Snow Leopard (I installed it around a month ago when it was first released) but this past week I've been becoming increasingly disappointed with how it runs.
The first problem is a problem that is plaguing what seems to be a large amount of people, a slower computer in general. Safari constantly gets a beachball during simple tasks such as scrolling down on a webpage that is already loaded. Since Safari is what I use the most on my computer, it is where i see the problem the most, however i haven't failed to notice that simply playing the Chess app is next to impossible. It doesn't show me moving my pieces, at least not until 20 seconds of lag. It just has a variety of performance issues that makes it unplayable (of course this isn't a big deal to me, that computer can be next to impossible to beat anyways) it is simply an example of the lag issue.
The next problem is the trackpad. I've noticed that physically clicking the trackpad in to drag something requires much more pressure than i remember, however isn't impossible. Now that aside (its been a blessing of sorts, i've gotten into the habit of using the double click to drag feature) I have been recently having problems with my trackpad no longer responding at all, forcing me put my computer to sleep and wake it back up for it to begin to behave normally again. In the same minute it stopped working twice, and after i closed and reopened my computer there was a period of about 20 seconds until the screen went blank (i'm assuming went to sleep) and woke back up. After it woke back up it began to work normally.
I'm a little offset by these problems, as unresponsiveness seems to be a issue for PCs instead of macs. I absolutely love my macbook and until I got it I had no idea how much of an improvement Apple is.
Before anyone asks, let me assure you that while all of these errors happen, i am not using any high demanding programs. RAM should not be an issue, however it appears to be. I have the 2GB RAM, and have plenty (100+) GB of storage open.

That's good news as it points to the fact that it is not a problem with the hardware.
I guess the next step would be to try to make the new user account to misbehave by running chess and seeing if that's the culprit. If it is the problem would be "solved" as in you'd know to kill the chess engine to speed up the computer.
The other option (a bit more painful) is that there is something the user prefs that hogs the system.
This would require a migration to a new account, without simply restoring all your current user prefs (to start afresh).
It's not a major drama, but requires some fancy footwork to transfer your data (backup or the Public folder) and most importantly mail messages (mailbox archive). Then there is the iCal and Address book (both can export archives to be that imported to the new account).
Do more testing on the current and new accounts. Kill the chess processes and see how you go.

  • What's Wrong with My MacBook Pro? Unresponsive, Loud Fan...

    Hi, I've got a Mid 2011, MacBook Pro. 250gb HDD, 4gb Ram, running 10.7.5.
Everything was working fine, then I took my MacBook to Mexico for a few weeks, so the power source was different to UK.
Worked fine for a few days, but then it seems that after connecting a camera and uploading 56 photos, everything has slowed right down, or just completely unresponsive
The fan is on constant overdrive aswel.
Starting up and down can take about 1 minute.
I've tried resetting the RAM, doing Disc Utility and a few other things in the Tips Guide. If I start up in Safe Mode, everything runs quick and smooth. But then I lose all Audio and keyboard lighting... which I assume is normal.
    Any ideas please?
I'm debating about buying a 500GB external, and using Time Machine to back everything up... will this be a definite fix?
    Chris.

  • 2011 Macbook pro Keyboard Unresponsive

    Hi,
I have a 2011 17" Macbook Pro. I'd left it in a cupboard - working - for a few months, as I got an iPad and didn't use it so much.
Now, when I try to use it, the keyboard is moreorless totally unresponsive. I can use a bluetooth keyboard.
The only keys that seem to work (occasionally) are the 0 key - but this is registers as F9, and P and -. Sometimes when I press 1 of these keys, i can see from the on screen keyboard that it thinks all 3 are being pressed and held.
I know this seems like a hardware issue, but I'm really hoping someone can tell me it's not. I can't do a SMC reset at the buttons won't press.
    Any ideas?

    Hi DanBrown180,
Based on the information you have provided, it appears your MacBook Pro needs to be serviced. The following link should help you get started with the process and has links with additional information on topics such as warranty and service pricing, battery replacement, and express replacement service.

  • My macbook pro becomes slow

I bought a macbook pro 13'' last september. It was good during the past one year, however, it becomes very slow recently, and I can't log into the system until i forced shut down the computer.    Once it also become dark when i was using it, and i also have to forced shut down it.  Is there anybody who met the similar issues with me ?  Do you know the reason ?   Do you know how to make the computer running fast again?

    try this:
disk utility - verify disk permissions - if errors are found - repair them and restart your macbook.
see if that helps you out....

  • Macbook Pro Desktop Unresponsive

My macbook pro (late 2011 running Mountain Lion) desktop is unresponsive. I am unable to click on anything and the dock is missing. The desktop looks normal and all (minus the missing dock) but nothing is clickable. Im using the builtin track pad and the curser does move. I've restarted it to no avail by holding down the power button and shutting it down but upon restart same issue persists. I did a smc also to no avail. Please advise

I forgot to post info about your freezing issues - Try booting from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.

  • Why does my 2012 macbook pro become slow sometimes?

I've purchased my 2012 4gb ram Macbook ram w/ 500 gb hard drive around September. It started off extremely fast the first 4 months (when I had mavericks), but there we're problems with the Video playback towards the last 4 months (It would Freeze and unfreeze & the the audio-video sync would be way off after 30 mins of netflix, which would cause the whole computer to slow down). So, I installed the Yosemite update, which made it even worse to the point where my macbook was unusable. With yosemite, I'd have an average of 500mb ram free memory available, sometimes even lower. Now, I did a manual restore to OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion, and I see the major difference in speed.  I could use safari now & get an average of 1.47 gb of free ram available (with just the safari application open). Now, the video playback issue still occurs sometimes & having about 4 programs open does make the computer slower than usual, but not as often. I'm hoping this is just a ram issue, becuase I'm expecting on upgrading my ram to a 16gb ram or higher while still on Mountain Lion just to be able to run Logic Pro & Adobe Premiere in the near future. If its not a ram issue which is causing this problem on my macbook, I'd be ****** because I'd be spending almost $200 on a ram upgrade and it not resolving this issue would kill me. Could someone help? Ill even take a Diagnose test like Etrecheck if you need me to. Thanks.

  • URGENT ! Macbook pro becomes very hot in my bag when on sleep

My wife's macbook pro 15 320 G 7200, became hot to the point we couldn't touch it. Iwas on sleep in her bag. This also happens to a friend macbook pro 15 last week.
Any thought except from turning off the bluteooth wake computer thing ?
    Could this sets fire ?

I am observing similar symptoms on the following hardware:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,3
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP53.00AC.B03
    SMC Version (system): 1.48f2
    I have 10.5.8 installed
    Observations:
Sleep works fine after I close the lid shortly after a restart.
After working for some time I need to manually sleep the machine otherwise the described symptoms (fan running, machine is getting hot in its bag) occur.
I suspect it's a software issue and try to narrow down which apps might be involved.
(Safari and System Profiler seem to be OK so far)

  • MacBook Pro Keyboard Unresponsive - and NO spills inside!

My entire keyboard has become unresponsive. It worked last night and not this morning. I haven't spilled anything, etc. It's simply locked up.
Maybe I hit some sort of keyboard command combination that set it as locked?
    Thanks, Shellie
