when i insert dvd my macbook can not read it and considers it as blank

    1. Clean the DVD with a microfiber cloth.
    2. Clean the optical drive with a commercially available cleaning kit.
    3. Reset SMC.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • My macbook pro can't read a dvd-r double layer

    Hi everyone!
I have a Macbook Pro 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 15 inches (mid-2009, model identifier MacBookPro5,3) with Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3. I can't read a commercial DVD DL-R (as indicated on the DVD). The DVD player doesn't mount the DVD and reject it after about a minute. All my other DVDs play fine on my computer and the problematic DVD plays on the more recent (about a year old) MacBook Pro of my wife. When looking at the properties of the DVD player via System Information, it says it should be able to play the DVD.
Any idea what the problem/solution could be? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi m,
SuperDrives are notoriously picky eaters. It may just be that brand or even that one disc won't play in that particular drive, or, it may be the drive needs cleaning.
You could purchase a CD/DVD drive cleaning kit, or you can try with materials you may already have on hand. Use a credit card, or something similar, and wrap it with an LCD cleaning cloth type product (basically a thin micro-fiber type cloth). Gently slide the "cleaner" in and out a few times in the left side of the optical drive opening. Make sure you can hold onto the cloth so it doesn't get stuck inside the drive. This cleans the lens, which may be all you need.

  • MacBook Pro won't read DVD+R media?

I have a first gen MacBook Pro, 15" 1.83GHz Core Duo processor with the Matshita DVD-R UJ-857 drive.
I have a number of data discs that I have written to DVD+R media (using another computer). When I place them in my drive, the MBP doesn't recognize the disc. I also have some DVD video I burned on DVD+R media, and the same thing: the MBP won't recognize the disc.
Anyone know why? It can read DVD-R just fine, but I haven't yet gotten it to read DVD+R at all.

I use a MacBook Pro 17" Core Duo and I am
experiencing the same issues where this MacBook will
not recognize Memorex DVD+R 4x discs burned on a
Lacie external 16x drive. Unfortunately for me, all
my backups over the last year are on these discs,
which seem to work in every other player or Powerbook
I have needed to load them on.
In general, Memorex uses the cheapest quality media possible to maintain their price point. Usually, this means Ritek and Prodisc media, which both vary widely in quality. Sometimes the media is great, other times crap.
Seems like the MacBook Pro drive has issues reading crap discs unfortunately.

  • My macbook pro won't read dvds from my external cd/dvd drive.

I have a new macbook pro 13 that I got for Christmas. I purchased a external cd/dvd usb drive so that I can watch movies on my mac since it doesn't have a dvd drive built-in. I put my dvd into the drive, and all my mac does is open a fiel that has the video and audio seperated. I tried clicking on the video file to see if I can watch it, but the computer has no software to read it, apparently. I don't know if this is a software thing or if it's my drive.

First, try one of the DVD drive cleaning kits that are available.

  • MacBook Pro won't read DVD+R DL Discs

Hi, I have a MacBook Pro, previous model not current, and I am trying to create a DVD using iDVD, the file is big, so I have to choose to burn on a DL disc, the disc burns great, no errors, but it will not play on my MBP. Why is this, that I can burn them, but I can't play them?

Today I got the same problem: I burnt a DVD+R with iTunes. It went alright. No error message. Then I ejected the DVD and inserted it again. The DVD drive ran a while with different speeds. Then it gave up and ejected the DVD without any error message.
Thereafter I did this a second time with the same result.
Then I used a Burn Folder, compiled the albums manually and burnt the DVD via Finder. Same result!
Then I started SimplyBurns, compiled the albums once more manually and burnt another DVD.
Guess what! Now the DVD was recognized by the MacBook Pro.
And when I tried the other 3 DVDs they were all recognized now!
    Strange, isn't it?
Anyone, who has an explanation for this?

  • New MacBook Pro has trouble reading DVD

Our new MacBook Pro will not automatically open a DVD when it is inserted. Had to go through DVD player and it said it did not recognize format. Had to manually select the app for it to play. DVD player is 5.1.1. Is this a bug? Linda

One DVD or all? Commercial DVD? One you burned? One you found lying on the street? More details would help...
Assuming you mean this occurs with multiple (all) commercial DVD movies, go to System Preferences > CDs & DVDs and set the 'When you insert a video DVD:' pop-up menu to Open DVD Player.

  • Optical Drive on my MacBook Pro can't read CDs.

I'm not sure why. It can read DVDs but it just spits out CDs, music or blank.

i've had similar experiences with my mbp. this is my first apple and it kind of *****. the problem i've had is importing cd's to itunes. dvd's have played just fine, but then i haven't watched a whole dvd on it. however all dvd's have loaded just fine. cd's have been problematic. once i start to import, it will get stuck on a song and just spin and spin. then i have to force a quit and finally i'm able to eject. i've read on this forum it is actually hardware related. i guess my super drive (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D) is really sensitive. so while it annoying to me, it seems it only does on my cd's that are really scratched bad. i guess apple uses the matshita and lg super drives and according to what i've read, both have their issues. if i knew for sure i could take it and get it fixed, i would, but it seems people still have problems. my biggest worry is that i send it in, and they scratch the bezel or something mior like that. i'm weird like that. my problem doesn't seem to be as bad as yours 'cause mine at least mounts and reads. try to do a search on it and you'll see what i mean. i really do enjoy the machine...to bad about the superdrive though, but as long as it burns cd's and dvd's, i'll wait to get it replaced until i know there is a real fix.

  • Macbook pro doesn't read dvds

    HI
I have a problem with my dvd player, it doesn't read dvds anymore. I just makes some noise but doesn't read anything, and then it doesn't want to eject anymore...
It was working very well until now so I really don't know what happenned. Also when i try the application dvd player it says that there's no valid dvd player on my computer.
If anyone could help, that would be great
(sorry for the english, i'm french and computer talk in english is way beyond my league.. )

Try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM and see if the system recognizes the player again. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11243

  • My 2012 Macbook Pro will not read dvds or cds.

It just spins around and ejects it. Its been doing this ever since I played Wreck it Ralph on it. Ralph wrecked it

    Hi Ally,

For temporary use, try holding the MBP upside down. If there's a gap between the disc and the lens even a tiny bit larger than it should be, holding everything upside down may bring the disc close
enough for the lens to read it. https://discussions.apple.com/message/15364924#15364924

  • HT2087 MacBook Pro can't burn DVD despite online instructions

all their online instructions for burning DVDs from iMovie ARE INCORRECT. The truth is, i just found out after wasting 2 DVDs, is that you need to download 3rd party software. I purchases one-to-one to get help with iMovie but became ill and had to cancel appt. Trying to finish project by using online tutorials WHICH ARE INCORRECT.

How can I install Snow Leopard on my 15" MacBook Pro without using its DVD drive?

I'm assuming your dvd drive is broken? if you have a thumb drive large enough (8GB or better), you can use another computer to make a bootable image from the install dvd to the thumb drive. then you can install from the the thumb drive.

  • How can I export slideshows created in Aperture v3.3.2 from Mid-2009 MacBook Pro-17 to blank DVDs?

(Fifth futile attempt in two hours, before I learned there was a Post webpage – I’m new to ApSuppCom - and after I learned that I am not allowed to update previous content, so I had to back out, make a few changes, and start over.)  How can I export slideshows created in Aperture v3.3.2 (complete with superimposed captions and music tracks) from Mid-2009 MacBook Pro-17 to blank DVDs ?  (Some other specs: Mac OS Lion 10.7.5; Capacity 499.5 GB;  Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core  2 Duo; Memory 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3; Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256MB)
I cannot do a copy (export) without various error messages appearing and the inevitable stoppage occurring.  Always with the DVD Video Player final message reading, “Supported disc not available.” Advisors and Mac Geniuses at local Apple Stores have told me to try Roxio Toast.  When I visited the Roxio website, and found numerous other company products, the descriptions all seemed to suggest that most of the apps shown can easily export videos to DVDs, but nothing was said about finished digital slide shows being exported.  At future events soon,  I hope to be handing out these finished DVDs (free) to the people in them.   Any help will be greatly appreciated. How can I export slideshows created in Aperture v3.3.2 (complete with superimposed captions and music tracks) from Mid-2009 MacBook Pro-17 to blank DVDs ?
Aperture cannot burn slideshows to a DVD.  It only can export a video of your slideshow.
In Aperture 3 you use the "Export" button in Aperture's slideshow project to render a video to a folder on your disk.
Then you use iDVD or another program to burn a video DVD.
I cannot do a copy (export) without various error messages appearing and the inevitable stoppage occurring.  Always with the DVD Video Player final message reading, “Supported disc not available.”
Could you please describe the exact steps that are causing these error messages?
How are you exporting your slideshow from Aperture? Which settings are you using? And how are you importing the video to iDVD or Toast to burn a video DVD?
