My macbook pro cd drive reads only the snow leopard official disk and nothing else, the rest he sees as blanks or doesn't see at all...what can i do?

Hello,
i have tried the cd cleaners. it worked once but now it doesn't...i have tryed all kinds of cds but the only one my optical drive seams to recognize is an old snow leopard cd i had. that makes me think it might be some software problem because that cd he reads perfectly every time. the dvds+r and cds he sees as blank and the dvds-r he simply ejects.
if you have any ideas i'm all ears.

Hi K,
The fact that cleaning worked once still suggests a dirty lens. Try this alternate cleaning method: Use a credit card, or something similar, and wrap it with an LCD cleaning cloth type product (basically a thin micro-fiber type cloth). Gently slide the "cleaner" in and out a few times in the left side of the optical drive opening. Make sure you can hold onto the cloth so it doesn't get stuck inside the drive. This cleans the lens, which may be all you need.

All the information that I had input on Quicken is gone. I have to have the external hard drive that I use to back up to be able to use quicken now. It is as if it was erased from the laptop hardrive

Try repairing permissions. My favorite way is with a utility called AppleJack. Info and download here. It's free. It only works when you boot in Single User Mode. When restarting or booting, hold down the Command key and S keys.
You will get a very different startup screen that looks like the Terminal app has hijacked the screen. Just let the lines of text scroll by. When that happens you will get a text entry prompt. Type in "AppleJack" without the quotation marks.
A DOS looking menu will appear. Choose 1 or d to run Disk Repair. If you get a message that Disk Repair found and corrected errors, run it again. Repeat until you get the "your disk appears to be ok" message. This rarely happens with my experience, though. This does the same thing as as booting from an external drive and running Disk Utility's repair. Only, no external drive is required!
Next, choose 2 or p to repair disk permissions. This will take a little while. AppleJack warns that it will take up to an half hour to run repair permissions. It'n never taken more than about ten minutes for my MacBook Pro.
As permissions are repaired, you will see each repair scroll on the screen. When done, the menu returns, choose q to quit. Then at the prompt, enter "exit" without the quotes. Your MacBook Pro should restart into Mac OS normally after this.
    Hope this helps.

  • My Macbook Pro will not charge. I have tried other charges and nothing. Can the MagSafe port go bad? Is that expensive to repair?

My Macbook Pro will not charge. I have tried other charges and nothing. Can the MagSafe port go bad? Is that expensive to repair?

The port can fail. Internal boards can fail. Batteries can fail. All with the result that no charging occurs.
You can try Resetting the System Management Controller and you can try Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters.
But usually you will have to take the mac in to a service place for testing.  It can get expensive, although occasionally it is not.

  • I am trying to upgrade a Macbook Pro that I was given to Snow Leopard. Help please?!

I am trying to upgrade a Macbook Pro that I was given to Snow Leopard.  While doing so, it froze up at 29 minutes left.  I am now getting the white screen with the flashing folder.  I don't need to save anything that is/was on it, I just need it running again.

You would reinstall 10.6 using your installation DVD.
Out of curiosity, how much RAM do you have? Recent versions of OS X really shine with 4GB or more.

  • Macbook Pro Will Not Boot to Retail Snow Leopard

I am a PC tech working on a Macboo Pro mid-2010 15" aka MacbookPro6,2 for an acquaintance (really) and I really appreciate any help/tips on this.  As given to me, the MBP was totally non-responsive.  Also, the owner does not have the original DVDs that came with the machine nor did she have the power adapter (long story).
Here is the summary:  The MBP will not boot to a retail Snow Leopard 10.6.3 DVD; it only gets to the light grey screen with the darker grey Apple symbol and no spinning gear.
    Here are the details:
    1. After procuring a new AC adapter and installing a new battery, it would boot up and run but displayed an error with Steam startup.  It connected to the internet via wifi, launched and ran a video dvd, etc, etc.  Looked good except for the Steam error screen.
    2. I went to the Steam website and downloaded the current version.  After the software installed I did a normal shutdown and restart and the MBP would not boot, just went to grey Apple screen and spinning gear.
    3. Booted up in single user, ran fsck -fy which reported "Invalid node structure (4, 24755)" which I understand is not good and it also reported that "The volume Untitled could not be repaired".  Just on a whim I ran the fsck a couple more times not expecting anything different and that's what I got - nothing different.
    4. Power up with Command R.  Goes to grey screen and then tries to boot off of the bad hard drive with previous results.
    5. Talked to Apple Care.  To make it short, they sold me a retail Snow Leopard.
    6. Installed a new blank hard drive (500GB, SATA II, WD Blue) and loaded the Snow Leopard into the Superdrive.
    7. Power up and press C.  Just goes to grey screen and grey Apple.
    8. Power up with Option.  DVD is there, click on it to launch, goes to grey Apple and that's all it does.
    9. Just for grins, I popped in a Windows 7 Recovery DVD and did the power up/option to launch that and the MBP actually loads the Windows files and screen but it will not proceed because Win7 recovery doesn't recognize the MBP.  At least the DVD worked.
    10. Installed a different new blank hard drive and tried to launch Snow Leopard install but no dice.
    11. Just for grins number two, I tried a remote install on my local network.  On initial DVD access, the MBP displays a spinning globe along with the grey Apple, accesses the DVD on the remote laptop three times, but then the spinning globe disappears and everything stops.  I left it for an hour and nothing else happens.
That is where I am stuck.  I really appreciate any ideas on how to proceed.  I can hear Genius Bar already, but was just wondering if I missed any possible steps to take myself.

You should have better luck with the correct build, as you can't use the installs as backward compatible. I also have an older machine that is for the kids, and was upgraded with the 10.6.3 retail disk which will not work with the Mid 2010.
Best of luck, and hope it helps.
If no luck, you may want to investigate hardware issues, as it should boot and install.

  • Macbook pro changes to read-only?

My roommate has a mid 2008 15" macbook pro and everything was going fine with it until 2 weeks ago, when it wouldn't boot. So I reformatted and clean installed Snow Leopard and migrated his files using Migration Assistant and everything seemed fine until 2 days later and he couldn't save anything from any program because it said there was not enough free space to save, however Get Info says there is 180gb remaining on his 250gb drive. So again I reformatted by zeroing-out the data to remove any bad sectors in the drive and reinstalled snow leopard. This time I didn't use migration assistant because it seemed like his previous file system could be corrupt. We could save and there were no problems until the next morning, and we get errors when trying to save a document that say "there is not enough free space", but again get info on the hard drive shows 230gb of free space). The computer functions normally, but it won't index itself or save files from Safari, Office, iLife, etc.
It seems like this drive goes to read only because we cannot save. We are going to try another hard drive, but I was wondering if any of you guys have ever seen this issue? Could it possibly be a bigger issue than a hard drive that it only a year and a half old?
    Any help is appreciated,
    Brendan

Not sure without more info(console log messages, smart status, system profiler info)but it sounds as if you may have a failing Hard Drive, if you had another drive that would be the best way to test. Good Luck

  • Can I partion my drive on macbook pro 10.5.8 to add snow leopard and not affect my leopard?  I'd like to run apps on snow leopard which cannot be run on leopard.

I'd like to add snow leopard to my macbook pro which runs leopard 10.5.8 in order to run apps.  I do not want to mess with my original system and risk losing data.  Is that possible by just going to utilities and partioniong my drive?

15 is probably enough.  And if you kept your home dir in a separate volume then you could use your same home dir on both leopard and snow leopard.  This is one of the reasons I recommend keeping the home dir on a separate volume.  Very convenient for switching OS's or needing to use a (backup) copy of the current OS.

  • I need to upgrade my Macbook Pro from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard. Will I lose any files on my drive if I do that?

I have a Macbook Pro running 10.4.11. I am trying to upgrade from that to Snow Leopard then to 10.7.5. I know that I have to do it in steps. My question ins this. I have a Snow Leopard disk that came with my Imac that I can use to upgrade my laptop. When I go through the process, it says something about using Timeline to restore. Am I going to lose all of my files? All I need is for the OS to be updated. Will it be safe to go through with it or will I lose all of my files on the drive. Any answers to this question are much appreciated.

You can't use the Mac OS X disc that came with another computer to upgrade another Mac because it's not supported. Buy Snow Leopard > http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
You shouldn't lose data, but you must make a backup before

The retail dvd I have has a part number: MC223Z/A
    I am currently running 10.5.8
Anyone know what the problem might be?
    Thanks

Perhaps the HDD does not have sufficient room.  It needs a minimum of 5 GB for Snow Leopard.
In all other respects your MBP should be able to install 10.6.
Disk MC223Z/A is the appropriate retail disk.
    Ciao.

  • Can't update MacBook pro software from 10.6.8 snow leopard

I have a MacBookPro 2.2 currently running snow leopard 10.6.8.
I wanted to update my software in order to use iCloud on my phone with iPhoto and transfer photos more easily.
In the App store I am unable to download the Mountain Lion software, I'm assuming this is due to my macbook's age ( It was handed down to me by my father so I am unsure of it's age ).
Am I able to download Lion 10.7 anywhere? I've only be able to find the Lion 10.7.5 but am having no luck as I am told I need 10.7 software first.
    What are my options?
Thanks in advance. Really stuck on what to do here.
Can't seem to find another discussion that answers my question?

Call the Apple telephone service, 1-800-MY-APPLE and pay for the download code to use at the Mac App Store to do the download.

  • External hd read only after snow leopard

Hi, I installed snow leopard and it's running fine, but now my permissions for my external drives (mac formatted) are now read-only. It wont let me change the permission, or change owner, even when I go through root account (regular account is an admin). I already repaired permissions on my mac hd in a vain attempt to see if that would help, but it didn't.
I then tried the chmod command in terminal
    sudo chmod -R u+rwX /Volumes/"myexternaldrivename"
but all i get is this for every file on the drive.
chmod: Unable to change file mode on /Volumes/Aaron's Big External/music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Disturbed/Ten Thousand Fists (Bonus Video Version)/Video - Stricken.mp4: Permission denied
    Any suggestions?

I've got the same problem here with a Seagate external HD. I've been able to install Leopard on another Western Digital HD and boot from it to copy some files to a newly purchased external, but in Leopard I can't copy my 180GB music library because of several errors. It either says that the file names cannot be copied because they are too similar to another file name (accidental dupes in the library) or that the names are too long to be copied and neither make any sense. I'm trying to figure out how to move all of my music over without having to go through it file by file and without losing anything.
I was able to easily copy all other information from the hard drive; the music is the last remaining item I need before I reformat the external and use it in Snow Leopard as a TM backup drive.

  • How do I uninstall CS2 from my macbook pro? I am still on Snow Leopard.

I have been using CS2 on my macbook pro for a couple of years now. It's slow, but it got done what I needed to get done. Today I got a message that said my CS2 license was not valid and all the applications in CS2 stopped working. I am assuming I have to uninstall and reinstall. BUT the first instruction is to go to the activiy monitor and find the "ahcremind" and click "quit process". I know you've heard this before and even answered it before but not in any place I could find. Help! How do I uninstall?

Remove the app from your Applications folder (or wherever it's installed) and then restart your laptop.
