My MacBook pro continues to be very slow after downloading Yosemite. It keeps referring to MacBook Pro (2). It's like there are two version running side by side. Any ideas?
My MacBook pro continues to be very slow after downloading Yosemite. It keeps referring to MacBook Pro (2). It's like there are two version running side by side. Any ideas?
It is now running Yosemite 10.10.1. I seem to have plenty of memory but the machine still runs slower than before installing Yosemite. Excel has a very noticeable lag when opening and loading files.
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I ran through the various steps as suggested including resetting the SMC.
I would say that there was about a 10% improvement. Although one of the icons still bounced for the count of 40
I'm still wondering why from the About this Mac, then System Report. it refers to my name MacBook Pro (2).
All the various problems seem to have started with the upgrade to Yosemite.

Macbook freezes for 15 minutes very frequently after downloading yosemite
After i downloaded yosemite, i started noticing my 13" macbook (from summer of 2013) freezing- well not freezing, the page would stop responding and then the entire system would stop responding. the dock would freeze, i would get the beach ball and i wouldn't be able to select a new app to run and even if i did, i couldn't do anything on it. at first i kept restarting the system every time it would happen, but finally i let it run its course. after i did this, it was ok for about 48 hours. now, it happened again, i let it run its corse, but i still kept doing it! please please help me! I deleted most of my files i no longer needed since i thought space was the issue, i took all of the clutter off my desktop but nothing has helped.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Safari is now VERY slow after downloading Lion
My Safari (which is the latest version) is now VERY slow after downloading Lion. It takes forever for anything to load, and some pages don't load at all anymore. Any way to fix this? It is very frustrating!
I've just made a change to try to keep the wifi from crashing and it also seems to give me a speed boost online.
Go into your System Preferences, choose Network, and then in that dialog box choose "Advanced..."
Once there, select the DNS tab.
Click the plus sign and add the following to your list of DNS servers:
8.8.8.8
It's Google's public DNS and seems to have fixed both the dropping and speed issues. -

My wifi is very very slow after installing mountain lion on my MacBook pro.
What can I do?Ha ha, I misread that as "My wife is very slow after installing mountain lion on my Mac book pro"
BTW on my MBPro (late 2009 with max RAM) Mountain Lion runs very well with no slowing down. -
My mac is to slow after download yosemite
why is my macbook air slow after download yosemite?
There could be many reasons for it, but a common one is that you activated FileVault when you upgraded. It takes several hours for the conversion to take place, and during that time performance will be reduced. Another common problem is inadequate memory (less than 4 GB.)

My Macbook pro (early 2011)become very slow after maverick install
Hi,
My Macbook Pro (early 2011) has become very slow after installing Maverick.
System is struggling to open any web pages, apps etc.. Even booting time is more than 5 mins. My macbook has 8 GB Ram and 750GM memory and also got 200GB of free space memory..
Could you please advice me on this. Thanksetresoft a long time contributer to Apple Support Communities wrote a very useful app he called etrecheck which helps in diagnosing many problems caused by third party installs etc.. Go to his website, read his information and from there download and run the program according to his instructions
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Download, run and post the results back here.

My mind 2014 macbook pro keeps freezing and is very slow after the yosemite update
HI my macbook 2014 model keeps freezing and it is very slow after i had updated it to yosemite
Why don't you try these: ( might or might not help, but it's worth a try )
See what you have loading on your login items.
Open up activity momitor, under All Procesess, see what's using most of your CPU resources (%).
Hightlight the one using the highest % on the CPU then click on quit process and see if that works.
Once you're done with that, go to Disk Utility and do a verify disk. After that, do a verify disk permission and repair if needed.
See if that helps you. -
Why is my MBP (2011) so slow after downloading yosemite?
My MBP has basically become unusable after downloading yosemite a few days ago. It is incredibly slow, and I get the pinwheel for hours on end. I have tried restarting the computer countless time. Although my account is really slow and inoperable, I can use the internet on my guest account without any problems. The issue seems to be specific to my account/data.
Any ideas what this might be? Is it an encryption issue? How long does it take? Can I stop it?
Thanks! It's only related to encryption if you are using it.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:

computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears.
I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
My MacBook Pro is SO slow after downloading Yosemite....
Help! I can't get the internet to load and every this is so slow after I downloaded Yosemite. Not a technical person so not even sure what to do!
Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart the router and the broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
Run Software Update and install all available updates for OS X or the computer's firmware. Any change?
Are you connected to Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi? If so, disconnect the Ethernet cable or adapter and test.
If possible, connect to the router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
If you're running a MacBook with the lid closed, open the lid. Any difference?
Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference? -

Failed? That's a new one. Is that your original hard drive? I suggest you replace it. SSDs are finally affordable these days.
You also only have 4 GB RAM. Yosemite is very RAM hungry. I suggest upgrading your RAM too.

Search protect? Safe connect? I don't like the sound of those. Hopefully when you run AdwareMedic, one or both of those will be gone. If not, I strongly suggest uninstalling them.

Where did all of this come from? Normally I always recommend using only vendor-provided uninstallers or uninstallation instructions. But I have never seen anything like these. In Finder, click the "Go" menu, hold down the option key, and choose "Library". Open the "Launch Agents" folder. Move the items listed above to the desktop and restart your machine.
Do this after running AdwareMedic.

Boot very slow after installed Yosemite
I have a Macbook air from October 2013. I have successfully upgraded to Yosemite yesterday from the App store, but the problem begins after that. It boots very slow, sometimes even halt. How can I fix the issue? Thanks.
Not sure if this may solve your problem, but I've come across this on one of the Macs here.
Open the disk utility, verify & repair disk permissions, verify & repair the disk if needed.
Restart the mac, hold down Option-Command-P-R to reset the PRAM. It should reboot again.
This helped the bad mac, and we appear to be back to normal.
On my other mac, I go from cold to logged-in within about 12 seconds (I run an SSD). -

Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Safari running very slow after downloading Mountain Lion
Since downloading OS X Mountain Lion Sarfafi runs very slowly as though I have used up my data download allowance from my service provider. I have no proxies installed (not that I would know what this means) and the DNS entries are from my service provider. Is there any way to uninstall Mountain Lion so I can have my imac back to the way it was??? I really regret downloading it. on top of that, whilst it shows I have downloaded an app (mountain lion) on the App Store icon, it doesn't come up when I click on it.
If you're using iCloud, disable all its services and test.
