My MacBook Pro corrupts USB hard discs

Hi, this is my first time so cut me some slack please :-) My computer details are :
Hardware Information:
         MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011)
         MacBook Pro - model: MacBookPro8,3
         1 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 CPU: 4 cores
         16 GB RAM
Video Information:
Intel HD Graphics 3000 - VRAM: 512 MB
AMD Radeon HD 6750M - VRAM: 1024 MB
I use various external hard disks to back up, especially to Time Machine. Occasionally (every few days) when I boot up the MacBook I get an error message to say that Mac OSX 9.1 cannot repair the HD and that I should backup the HD and reformat it. Most files I can backup, but I cannot backup the Time Machine files.
Seagtae 4TB HDs seem more prone than WD 3TB or less.
Any ideas are welcome,
Geoffrey Kelley

If you have any software from Seagate or WD on your Mac or on the drives themselves, that may be the problem.
WD has gone to extraordinary lengths to make their drives incompatible with Mavericks. In some cases they have firmware in the drive enclosure which is incompatible too. If this is the case with your drive you may find a firmware update on the WD website, which you can install, if you trust WD (which I don't). If I had a WD external drive I'd remove it from the enclosure and put it in another (non-WD) enclosure.

  • IMac, MacBook Pro, 750GB USB Hard Drive and Time Machine

I have my external hard drive partitioned and directly connected to my iMac. Time Machine mounts and backs up one partition. I have the other partition configured to share off of the iMac. The MacBook Pro sees the partition in time machine but the back up fails every time. I understand that the drive won't allow the two Macs to back up at the same time, so I've shut off Time Machine on the iMac....still no success. Could someone please point me in the right direction.

So I have made some head way regarding this odd problem. Turns out my memory card reader is fine I think. My memory card reader will eject on the right port using a 4GB Lexar 133X professional CF card but NOT on the left USB port. However ALL 3 of my sandisk CF cards work fine in the reader on both USB ports. These 3 cards range from all different speeds from 15MB/sex to 30MB/sec. My lexar is 20MB/sec rated. Go figure!?
As for the Western Digital My passport USB 3.0 drive I have come to the conclusion its the drive and not the port. Reading through various forums on Anandtech, Apple Support and the Western Digital website forum many people have had issues with these drives on USB 3 ports on both Windows and on the Mac.

I have an older macbook pro and the hard drive is starting to go (making loud noises). i tried to back up to an external hard drive (my passport essential se) using time machine and the computer keeps shutting down. the same thing happens when just trying to save my pictures from iphoto to a flash drive. suggestions to complete backup please?

Sounds like you'll need to access that drive while it is not booted. You need to replace it anyway, so do that, then one way or another (ext enclusure, et), access it and copy files.
If you keep trying to boot it, you might kill it for good and not get your files, so just swap it out first.

Could you please resolve this problem,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Simply take it to an Apple Store or reseller if it's in warranty. Your Mac will be repaired or replaced for free because it looks a hardware problem rather than a software issue.
If it's not in warranty, hold Command and R keys while your MacBook is starting up, and reinstall OS X. If it doesn't work, you can't do much more to solve the problem

i tried transferring my iphoto library from my old macbook onto my new macbook pro (via external hard drive), but when i open the new iphoto, it seems to have transferred ALL images ever used on my old macbook. so i tried to just delete all those images so i could try a different approach to transferring, but the new iphoto won't let me do anything and every time i try to delete anything it crashes (since the image amount is so high).  please help!!
MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), iphoto '11, version 9.4.2

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • I just replaced the hard drive on my macbook pro, reformatted new hard drive and copied over a backup from time machine now I have a kernel panic message (you must restart) - what do I do now?

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents – the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.

  • How do i copy files from my macbook pro to my hard drive? These files were previously started on my old dell.

how do i copy files from my macbook pro to my hard drive? These files were previously started on my old dell.

More then likely that external drive is formatted the Windows NTFS format which Mac OS X can Read but it can not Write to that format. So you would need to copy all the data off that drive, to either a Windows PC or to your Mac, thenn use the Mac to format it for the Mac OS. Which would be Mac Extended (Journaled) with a Partition Table of GUID.
If you want to use that drive on both Mac and PC then you would need to format it either FAT32 or exFAT.

  • Will a Macbook pro early 2011 installation disc work on a 2007 or 2008 Macbook pro 15

My collegue's 2007 or 2008 Macbook pro 15 inch keeps getting stuck on the apple load up screen everytime he hits the power button. He doesnt know what version it is and I forgot to write down the model number of it(Ill update May 16 at 10am PST). I tried safe mode, it worked but after the loading bar gets close to 1/2 it freezes up. He can not find his installation disc that came with the computer. I have mine but its for Model # A1278 I think its snow leopard. Will the installation disc and application disc run successfully on my collegue's 2007 or 2008 Macbook pro?
I apologize if there's a similar thread out there, I couldnt find one. -

Will a MacBook Pro Early 2011 installation disc work on a 2007 or 2008 MacBook Pro 15?
    No it will not.
Machine specific gray/back disks are for one model of Mac only as they only contain hardware drivers for that model, not previous ones.
The 10.6.3 white Snow Leopard retail disk will work and it's available from Apple online for a small charge.

This is indicative of a problem with the boot drive and the file structure retaining data on the drive.
The progress bar progressing and stopping means the fsck drive repair is failing, likley the drive incurred head shock damage at that point.
The boot drive itself is likely fine and the problem can be resolved but the disks are going to be required if it's running Snow Leopard.
First get the disks, then attempt Disk Utility > Repair Disk and check the SMART status if the drive is still good.
If there is no backup of data, get that off the machine using a external boot drive.
To fix that problem of a bad sectors, unfortutly the entire drive will need to be Zero Erased (security option > zero all data) using Disk Uility while c or option/alt key booted from the 10.6 disks (using a wired or built in keyboard), it's the only way.
This means all programs, files (remaining) and OS X will be removed in the process. You could replace the drive also.

  • I bought and external usb hard disc, and i added it to time machine and now i can't use it! what do i do?

I just bought this external USB hard disc, and what I did was I put all of my pictures in there because I need space for my computer. What I did after that , is that I configured the hard disc with Time Machine, to clear some space also and to "protect" my data. But now I can't use my hard disc, I can't see my pictures I had in it and I can't use it for Time Machine either.
What can I do to get my pictures back?? Thanks!!

External USB hard disks come formatted, and unless they're specifically sold for use with Macs, they're formatted for PC's, with FAT, exFAT, or NTFS formats. Macs can read data from all three formats but can only write to FAT and exFAT formatted drives. So you could save your pictures to an external with either of those two formats. However, Time Machine needs a HD formatted and partitioned for a Mac, and if you "configured the hard disc" for use "with Time Machine," you effectively erased the pictures. However, since you "can't use it for Time Machine either," it's not clear exactly what you did, so we'd need to know that first. Also, what do you mean by "clear some space also?" On your internal or the external? And if the external, how did you do that since it already had your pictures and should still have had some empty space.
I'd suggest looking here to see if your external's format agrees with what Time Machine needs. Just look, don't actually change anything, so we have some baseline to work with. And also look at the box the external HD came in. What does it say about computer compatibility and which operating systems it's intended for (i.e., Windows, Mac, both).

  • Macbook pro won't read discs

macbook pro won't read discs. I have tried resetting the SMC & the computer itself. Any ideas

What exactly happens when you try?
Have you tried both DVDs and CDs?
    Try a cleaning disk.
Otherwise it would seem that the optical drive failed.

No, sorry. it won't work with the 2007 MBP. You can replace the optical drive yourself - just go shopping at OWC.

Using Carbon Copy Cloner which is quicker firewire 800 Macbook Pro to external hard drive or Macbook Pro to same via Airport Extreme?

Firewire 800 is the fastest and most reliable. Also it's bootable if you hold the option key down on a wired or built in keyboard.  Not bootable via Airport obviously or if Filevault is used.
It's only your first clone that's usually takes the longest, it's shorter when it updates as you only do the changes which you can control to keep a pure clone if you wish.
