My macbook pro crashes constantly

Okay, so here's the deal:
My macbook pro crashes constantly and it seems to be getting worse.
It's a macbook pro mid 2010 purchase with a 2.66 i7 4gigs ddr3 288mb intel hd graphics running OS X 10.8.5.
The problem occurs in numerous different circumstances. In every case it will cause the screep to go black, crash, restart itself, and give me a message saying it restarted due to an error. After that it will be, seemingly, fine, until I run into another of the myriad instances when it will crash. It's very easy to duplicate so if posting the error message will help I can definitely do that. Here is a list of occasions that the crash currently occurs:
About 20 seconds after opening photobooth.
Sometimes, but not always, after opening iPhoto.
Netflix, whenever I try to watch something instantly.
Trying to update to OS X Maverick.
Certain types of ads on sites that use video seem cause it.
Tried to install Starcraft 2 one time and it doesn't seem to like that either.
Firefox likes to crash about twice as frequently as Safari for some reason.
Honestly, there are probably others, but I just avoid certain programs now because it's such a pain.

Here's one. There's a 3 year time limit? This has only started occuring within the last 7 - 8 months.

This is very weird. It only does this with Leopard? Have you tried reinstalling the OS?
Your computer should not be doing this. If this persists after a fresh installation of the OS, then you may need to keep going back until the problem is resolved. The Apple guys should be able to figure this out. The picture you posted looks very much like either a graphics chip problem or a display problem, but if so, I would expect Windows to also show these artifacts.
    Good luck!

  • MacBook Pro crashing constantly (npvhash=4095)

    Hi guys,
Got a new MacBook pro end of april, loved it to bits for the first hour, after that it started crashing constantly, and has been since.
I thought it might be a factory problem so I went back with it (Cancom, UK) and after the guys saw it crash, they happily replaced it with a new one.
Got back to the office with the new one, after the leopard into movie finished and tried to open up safari ... crash. So I went back to Cancom and both (me and the Cancom guy) of us thought it was the RAM, as it was the only thing that was related to the two (I upgraded to 4gb RAM from the 2gb default), so he changed the RAM and I took off again only to realize it didn't fix my problem.
This is what the system profiler says about my ram:
    Memory Slots:
    ECC: Disabled
    BANK 0/DIMM0:
    Size: 2 GB
    Type: DDR3
    Speed: 1067 MHz
    Status: OK
    Manufacturer: 0x0198
    Part Number: 0x393930353432382D3030312E4230304C4620
    Serial Number: 0x94CC0956
    BANK 0/DIMM1:
    Size: 2 GB
    Type: DDR3
    Speed: 1067 MHz
    Status: OK
    Manufacturer: 0x0198
    Part Number: 0x393930353432382D3030312E4230304C4620
    Serial Number: 0x94CC01A4
I also ran the debug thingy (holding down d while booting), but that ran fine.
Since then I've tried all sorts of things found around google but with no joy. For the past month I've been running Win XP on my MBP because Leopard is just unusable (it sometimes crashes every 2 minutes) and the crashes are in no way related. Some of them happen when I just browse, some of them happen when I listen to music, some of them happen when I code (even with no internet connection).
Windows XP has never crashed on the MBP.
Could anyone please let me know if you've had this problem before, and if so ... did you manage to fix it?
    Photo attached !http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/8383/img0177e.jpg!
The only thing my Console shows (that is in any way useful) is npvhash=4095
The lines are not moving usually, sometimes they flicker, the screen just sits like that and there is nothing I can do to make it do anything, sometimes the lines are vertical. Most of the times they're like in the attached photo, with half the screen blacked out, sometimes the screen doesn't black out but the lines show up in packs on the whole screen.
The only way out of the crash is holding the power button down.

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

My 06' Macbook Pro crashed with vertical, green pixelated lines and now will not advance past the turn-on screen with the apple filled with green lines as well. Then, it says to hold down the power button to restart. I have tried several times to get it past this point but tnothing helped.
I have an appointment at the Apple store today, but was wondering : will all of the information and files on my desktop be lost? Or is this a logic board problem?
Any help is much MUCH appricated.

I'm not sure, if you're out of warrenty it'll cost quite a bit for the replacement of the logic board replacement...unless you have apple care. you could ask apple to try and recover your hard drive but i'm not sure.

  • My macbook pro crashed and the hard drive was replaced. How do I restore my backup pre- 9.6 iphoto library to the 9.6.1 iphoto library? They look completely different.

My macbook pro crashed and the hard drive was replaced. How do I restore my backup pre- 9.6 iphoto library to the 9.6.1 iphoto library? They look completely different. When I look at my backed-up iphoto library folder I see lots of files and folders: ALbumData.xml, Attachments folder, etc. The 9.6.1 iphoto library doesn't appear to be a folder at all. Help!

iPhoto 6 and earlier libraries were regular folders with the kind of files your reporting.  With the advent of iPhoto 7 the library folder was changed to a package similar to the application packages but have essentially the same files and folders inside.  There's no reason to have access to the inside of the iPhoto Library so Apple changed them to packages.
Do you have a backup copy of the iPhoto Library from before the HD crash.  If so restore it to the Pictures folder in your Home folder.  If you previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 or earlier download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on your library before trying to open it with iPhoto 9.6.1.

My macbook pro crashed after installing maverick. I lost all my photos however the iPhone iPhoto app still has these photos so how can i access the package contents to recover these photos?

We'll need to know more to beable to help. Do you want to try to restore your photos from your iPhone to your Mac, or try to recover the photos from the old iPhoto Library on your Mac?
What is the situation of your Mac now? In hat way did it crash? A hardware problem with the drive? Does the system not start properly? Does iPhoto not launch? Do you still have the iPhoto Library on your mac or a backup, so we could try to rescue the photos there?
What versions of iPhoto are on your iPhone and your Mac?
however the iPhone iPhoto app still has these photos so how can i access the package contents to recover these photos?
On the iPhone you cannot access the "package contents" - IOS hides the file system from the users. To restore photos from your phone share all iPhoto photos to your Camera Roll, that are not already in the Camera Roll,  and then connect the iPhone via USB and import the Camera Roll to iPhoto or Image Capture. Or use any of the other sharing methods described on thos manual page: see:  Ways to share photos http://help.apple.com/iphoto/iphone/2.0/?handbuch#blnk7d8f763e
To retrieve photos from a corruptrd iPhoto Library on your Mac we need to know the version number and more about the "crash" you experienced, the state of your mac, the system, the data. Please post back with more details.

  • While running on battery, MacBook Pro crashes after a few minutes of use.

While running on battery, my MacBook Pro crashes (shuts down) after a few minutes (less than 10) of use. Battery indicator still says I have enough power (more than 75%) so it can't be related to the other reported issues with low battery crashes.
While on power adaptor, I don't have any issues.
I checked battery condition as suggested in all the forum threads I can find and its fine.
    Running Lion 10.7.2

PRAM reset did not resolve the issue

my macbook pro crashes after a few minutes of playing a game or using photoshop? i just got it fixed motherboard. do i have to do an update?

There are no updates currently available beyond v10.8.4 for Mountain Lion.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes a longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
If that doesn't help, the startup disk may need repairing.
Turn the Mac off, wait about ten seconds then startup while holding down the Command + R keys. Let go of the keys when you see the spinning progress indicator.
From there you should be able to access the utilities in recovery mode to verify and repair the disk if necesssary, or reinstal OS.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro **crashing** changing to a blue screen with lines or distorted screen when I open logic or Ableton Live

Why is my MacBook Pro **crashing** changing to a blue screen with lines or distorted screen when I open logic or Ableton Live. Then I have to restart by long pressing the power button. Can somebody plz help me

What you describe sounds like a hardware issue. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.

  • My 15in. macbook pro crashes randomly

My 15in. Macbook Pro crashes all the time now. before it did it very seldomly. but now it seems like anything i do will cause it to crash. if i open garageband or even QuickTime. OR sometimes if it's sitting for awhile, and i just move the mouse, it will crash.
I heard that there were some problems with a few of the 15 inch macbook pros that were made Mid-2010 and that you could get a new motherboard installed FOR FREE if it was bought around that time. is this true?

It's true. Mid 2010 15-inch MacBooks Pro came with a defective NVIDIA GPU that causes unexpected restarts, kernel panics, black screens... See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
From what you say, it's probable that the GPU has failed, so make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take your MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller

  • My MacBook Pro crashes randomly - suspect HW failure

My MacBook Pro crashes randomly and the crash log always shows something wrong with CPUs 6 and 7. I have tried to run benchmarks to stress the CPUs but that doesn't do the trick. Compiling with Xcode seems to crash "cc1plus" task, sometimes it's the kernel_task, but the rest of the log is always pretty much the same. I have run the Apple hardware test and another memory test - no failure there.

  • Macbook Pro crashes on mouse click

    Hello everyone,
I've been having this problem for two weeks now and it's happening more and more frequently!
    Info:
    Macbook Pro 15'' mid 2011
Mac OS X Mavericks / Mac OS X Yosemite
Hard Drive: Samsung 840 Evo 250GB SSD
    8 GB Ram
    THE ISSUE:
Every so often at a random time, at the exact moment I perform a mouse click, my macbook pro crashes.
That instant, the screen goes dark ( like I just ripped out it's battery ) and reboots automatically, saying "your mac restarted because of a problem".
Like I said, it's gotten more and more frequent! ( 5 times a day or more now... )
    WHAT I'VE TRIED:
So the problem occurred in Mavericks, so I figured I'll install Yosemite ( on a new partition ) and see if it's any better.. Well it isn't...
Same problem, same type of crash.
Then I figured maybe it's related to my magic mouse.. So i turned it off and used a third party mouse. No luck! It also happened while using the Macbook's trackpad.
I also haven't found anyone with a similar problem online so far, so if any of you have experienced something like this or know what might be causing it, i'd be grateful for any information!
    Best regards,
    Robert

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.
