My MacBook Pro does not read XD Cards.

We're on vacation and took a whole bunch of pictures with my wife's Olympus camera. When we realized we left the cable home I went to Radio Shack and bought a Card reader.
My Dad's 10 years old HP computer has no problem reading the **** thing, while my overpriced because it works MacBookPRO what a joke laptop can't read it.
the reader is Converter Drive by Digital concepts.
Is this why we have supported the cool looking nerds at 1 infinite loop while everyone else was buying PCs? I'm an old timer (Mac since 87) and disgusted with all the small details and corners apple is cutting.
Can someone please explain how is it possible for the "leader" for the design community's computers to not be able to read something an HP can read.

I haven't had any problem reading XD cards with a pretty basic card reader on any of our Macs, Turk (MBPs, MBs, iMacs, PB's , iBooks etc)
The reader you have bought has some pretty awful reviews, I'm afraid. see http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Concepts-Flash-Memory-Reader/dp/B00178LEJA for example. You will see that PC users have problems with it too. PC and Mac users alike seem to have problems with it not just not reading, but melting! When 6 out of 7 users give a device a "1 star out of 5" rating you can be pretty sure its a dog. (Sorry, that is rather unkind to dogs when I think about it!).
I'd suggest you simply try a different brand of reader. I'd avoid the super cheapies like this one in future, though. This one, in particular, sounds like a serious fire hazard. maybe you are lucky it doesn''t work in your Mac!
Cheers

  • Macbook pro does not see sd card

I've repeatedly inserted an SD card into my MacBook Pro but am unable to see it.
I'm new to Mac product and the card was formatted in a Windows 7 system. It has documents on it which I'd like to edit.
I could understand not being able to access it, but, the Macbook Pro gives absolutely no indication the SD card was inserted into the slot.
I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.
    Suggestions?

I had the same problem.  I tried everything that everyone's suggested, but no results.  Then I sprayed a can of air/duster into the slot.  Voila!  It works!

    Best regards.

    Hi aqeelfromkuwait,
Thank you from using Apple Support Communities.
I understand that your Nikon D800 is not being recognized by your MacBook Pro. Here are a couple of articles that may be of help to you. One is for general USB device connection issues and the other specifically for cameras.

  • Help! My Macbook Pro does not read my USB Modem.

I have a USB Modem with Claro (a peruvian company) and my computer use to read it just fine but now does not.  A friend connected another USB Modem from another compàny (Movistar) and also a USB cable for his projector and now all of a sudden my macbook does nothing when I connect my Claro USB Modem. When I plugged my claro usb into my computer, a program use to start up that would allow me to click ¨connect´ and connect to the internet but now nothing starts up.  I thought that maybe the movistar modem or projector downloaded programsthat prevented my macbook for reading my claro modem so I completely deleted those programs, system files and all. I even completely deleted the claro program hoping that it would automatically download once I connected the claro usb like it did the first time.  Please help! I volunteer in the middle of nowhere and internet is kinda important.

  • My MacBook Pro does not read burnt DVD

    Hi guys,
Does anyone of you alredy encountered the following problem with your optical drive (Matshita DVD-R UJ 857):
    - Perfect CD reading/recording
    - Perfect original DVD reading
    - Perfect DVD burning
    - No or almost no burnt DVD reading.
This is becoming nasty since you back up your stuff on a blank DVD (verbatim DVD-R) but cant read them back...
Anyone out there that has the same pityful problem?
    Let me know,
    .M

I too am having this problem. I spoke with Apple Support and they basically said "if it reads the DVDs we provide then it's not broken". What a joke.
The DVDs I am having problems with are all from commercial software that I purchased, but they are not pressed discs. They are DVD-R or DVD+R (not sure which). The discs do not read on my 15" MBP, but read just fine on my 15" PB and on my desktop Windows system. To me it seems that the new SuperDrive is not so super after all.
Hopefully Apple will hear from enough of us that this is a problem, and then maybe they will actually do something to fix it.
    Cheers

  • My MacBook Pro does not read NTFS format, how can I solve this problem?

I connected my external Hard drive to my Mac and it gives the error abou not reading the NTFS files... is there an app that can solve this problem?
    Thanks a lot

You can take the drive to a PC, off load the files and right click and format the drive exFAT or FAT and place the files back on, then the Mac can read it.
If you install NTFS reading software on your Mac, you will always be paying for it and it's updates, breaks your connections to the hard drive as well.
Neutral formats are best, proprietary ones that require one to pay is bad.
    Drives, partitions, formatting w/Mac's + PC's

  • I need to update my nikon D800 firmware but my Macbook Pro does not load a mass storage icon in my desktop, so, how can I update it if I can't get into the CF card pastes?

I need to update my nikon D800 firmware but my Macbook Pro does not load a mass storage icon in my desktop, so, how can I update it if I can't get into the CF card pastes?

I'd say your sister messed up and your iPod is toasted.
Think about it...  She plugged it in to another computer, she doesn't remember what she did (yeah, right), and now your iPod is not being recognized by your computer...
Also take into consideration how old is your sister, and how much does she know about electronics?

  • Does my macbook pro mid 2009 read SDHC cards in the card reader?

If you have an SD slot on the left side of your MBP it reads SDHC cards.

  • The sound on my Macbook Pro does not work.

The sound on my Macbook Pro does not work.  When we press the volume buttons, the sound icon pops up, but the bar is full with a small "Does not work" circle below it, and nothing happens when I hit volume up or done.  I went into system preferences, but there aren't any options there that I can see to change it.

"Unfortunately, it doesn't provide any help for a MacBook Pro, other than indicating to call Apple Support" (sic).
Au contraire. TS1574's title and affected products are thusly:
"Troubleshooting issues with no audio from built-in speakers on Macs
Products Affected Mac mini, MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac"
As a result, the instructions of the article are relevant. To be sure, follow those steps, the last of which is to contact Apple.
So, by way of reminder, here are the steps to troubleshoot the audio on your MacBook Pro. There is no red light, so the port is likely fine. Headphones work, so clearly your sound card is fine.
    1. Ensure an incorrect version of OS X is not installed. If one is, then reinstall or erase/install after backing up your data.
    2. Remove any external audio devices from USB, firewire, etc.
    3. Open Sys Prefs > Sound > Output
If Internal Speakers is listed, select it and test again.
If Digital Out is listed, confirm again that all external audio devices and cables have been removed.
If mute is selected, unselect it.
If the volume slider is low, raise the volume.
If the above simply doesn't fix it, the issue may be a corrupted plist. Apple Support might be able to help troubleshoot the issue further, per the last step of TS1574.
I hope it gets resolved for you. Good luck.

I lost my iphone and my macbook pro does not show the icloud in system pref. how do i get icloud on my mac?

iCloud is only available in Lion, 10.7. You will have to upgrade to Lion in order to get into iCloud. If you transfered a .mac or .me address to iCloud through mobile me, or you have another device iCloud enabled, then you can log into the iCloud.com website.

  • MacBook pro does not recognize my WD external hard drive anymore

I use TIme Machine on my WD external hard drive. Everything was working great up until about a month ago. My MacBook Pro does not recognize my external hard drive anymore...I have done nothing differently than usual. I did search in previous discussions and tried rebooting both the hard drive and the computer.
The USB port is fine as it does recognize another external hard drive and also pen drives....Please help! I haven't backed up in a month and need to figure out how to get this to work soon. Should I call WD?

Does the WD drive show in Disk Utility?
Many times, a USB port simply cannot provide the power a hard drive needs. It is not uncommon for any electric motor to draw more power as it ages. A drive that worked before can stop working when it gets older because age has made it tak more power than any USB port can supply. There are a couple of cheap things to try:
    1) A "Y" USB cable---two plugs go to the computer and one to hte drive, giving a power boost.
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
    2) a POWERED USB hub. That takes the power delivery burden off the USB port so it can deal with data.
WD bare drives are fine but their enclosures are not very Mac-friendly. One thing that has reported helping is to get rid of the proprietary formating that WD puts on their drives. If you don't have to share the drive with a Windows computer, use Disk Utility to erase and reformat the drive to Macintosh Extended Journaled.
