My MacBook Pro doesn't like monitors.

This is post #2 on the matter. My last question that I posted on this topic looks to have been deleted.
I'm having an issue, well, a few issues, with my Late 2008 MBP 2.53Ghz, 4GB Ram, 320GB HD. Its a stock configuration with the only thing having been upgraded is the OS.
It crashes. A lot. But they're not kernel panics, its something to do with the window manager when I plug in and unplug USB devices and/or a display. There's nothing in the logs that indicate that something has crashed.
Just this morning I put my iPod in its dock while it was playing without headphones, took my computer out of its bag, connected the power, the USB hub, they USB Keyboard, then the display and before I could wake it up the iPhone was stuttering, wouldn't respond and then restarted. The computer was completely unresponsive. The monitor didn't even respond that it had been connected to something.
Most times I'll have problems with unplugging my display. I can unmount and unplug the USB devices (Apple keyboard, logitech mouse, iPhone dock & external Seagate hard drive) but unplugging the display will cause the system to hang and the fans to spin up.
Its not a hard crash, though. The window manager, or something, is becoming unresponsive. I can SSH in from another computer and kill just about every process running but can't get the computer to become responsive again.
I've reinstalled the OS a few times now and keep having the same issue.
Can anyone help?

Hi Shawn, I have the identical machine. I have not had the issues you speak of. I plug into a 24" LED cinema display daily along with similar USB devices. I noticed you mentioned you are using 10.5.5, perhaps try to update to 1.5.6; Also, try to update the firmware in your display adapter (if not using a display with the mini display port). I know there were some firmware updates for the display adapters (http://support.apple.com/downloads/MiniDisplayPort_to_VGA_FirmwareUpdate)

  • MacBook Pro doesn't like my 3rd gen. iPod

Just got a new MacBook Pro (work-issue = no administrator password for me), which replaced a Titanium PowerBook. Tried to hook up and sync my 3rd gen. iPod for the first time, using the Firewire port of course. (Music library has already moved to new machine.)
The iPod doesn't seem to be seen by the MacBook Pro. It doesn't show up in the iTunes source list or on the desktop. The iPod goes into "Do Not Disconnect" mode, then it freezes.
I've seen other people posting with similar or same issues, but no resolution. What could be going on?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Update: I have discovered that if I connect the iPod to the Mac with the Firewire cable only, things work perfectly. If I connect thru the dock with the iPod sitting in it (like I was before), things go haywire.
So I guess the MacBook Pro likes my 3rd gen. iPod just fine. The iPod dock is what it doesn't like.
Weird. Thanks for all your thoughts.

  • 2007 MacBook Pro Doesn't like Mountain Lion-- Loud, incessant fan.

Since updating my 2007 Macbook Pro to Mountain Lion, the fan won't stop running loudly. The CUP% looks normal (nothing over 10) and I am only running google chrome. Is this a common problem? is there a common fix?

I fixed the issue. I researched many many forums and found no help on any of them, and sorry-no help on this one either.
What solved the issue - and I hope this helps someone else who has the same problem:
1).  Install new hard drive (with or without osx pre installed)
    2).  Remove all ram
3).  Power on and wait 1 minute
4).  Hold power button until it turns off
    5).  Install ram
    6).  Power back on
    7).  BOOM! It works again.

  • Macbook Pro doesn't recognize monitor - extremely frustrating!

I have had this problem ever since I started trying to use an external monitor. Essentially, when I plug in my cable (mini display to dvi, dvi to hdmi) the display blinks blue, but my monitor doesn't turn on!
Everything is plugged in, the monitor works fine with everything else, so it must be the macbook.
I googled this topic and it looks like nobody really has a solution but I figured I would try here anyway.
Eventually, if I try for literally an hour, sometimes my monitor will turn on. I don't do anything differently, just sit and plug and unplug the cable. The cable is also good because it works for other devices. This is so frustrating because what's the point of an expensive monitor when I can't use it?!?! Apple is going to lose me as a customer if this isn't fixed.

You say the cable is good because you have tried it on different devices but what about the adapter? Have you also tried the adapter with different devices? If not, it could be a bad adapter.

  • New MacBook Pro doesn't like my Dreamweaver CS3?

Okay DW CS3 was bought back in 2007, so I realise that to hope that is was still supported was a long shot.
The problem is I host the website for my company and I am self taught, I looked at Dreamweaver CC but it is not right for us.
Our customers barely use our website and we only change the news page once a month, if that.  Paying £17 a month seems a little steep.
I have looked at Blue Fish, Quantus and other web dev software and editors but it all seems a bit much for our little site - just five pages...
Is there any software that I can buy outright in one lump sum that will do what I need it to?  I edit in view mode not html or code....
    Thanks for any help!

This is really unfortunate. I'm sorry that nothing works. I was going to mention holding down the power button and doing a force shutdown but you already did that. You might need to take it into the Apple store. I don't know if booting into safe mode would help. You would have to turn off the machine again, hit the start button and hold down the shift key after you hear the tone, but normally you would let go of the shift key when you see the apple logo and spining wheel. Maybe by holding down the shift key after you here the tone will cause the screen to come back on? The other option is to start up from the 'install disk' if your machine came with one. You would insert the disk, then shut down the computer, and hold down the C key right after hitting the start button.

have a problem with my MacBook Pro.5,3 and monitor.  Intermittently, the desk top screen becomes broken up into vertical sections, which appear in the wrong order, creating a haphazard picture.
The Apple icon, usually at top left corner, appears in top right corner  in a strip including all that left hand.  When the computer is restarted, the screen goes back to normal.  But I have to move the mouse to the far left of the screen and then up until it reappears on the far right hand side of the screen so that I can hit shut down button.
It seems to happen randomly though always on desk top and sometimes when I move mouse and computer switches on from rest mode.   My large flat screen is relatively new.
The video card on this computer, which is approximately two years old, is Nvidia FeForce 9400M.
Any help would be welcome as my usual source of assistance is not available and I am not well versed in workings of the Mac although I have used one for many years.

That sounds like a Hardware problem.
You may be able to confirm that with Apple Hardware Test, or make an appointmenst for a free Genius Bar evaluation.

  • Macbook pro doesn't recognize camera on image capture

My MacBook Pro doesn't recognize the built-in camera for a lot of my applications, including Image Capture. It doesn't show up anywhere in my system preferences. Any idea why this is so?

    (1)  Mac's built-in camera does not work with Image Capture.
Image Capture works with external devices like scanners, some iOS devices, some cameras and RAM cards, etc.  Click this link for more info about Image capture and some of the apps that can work with your inbuilt camera.
Click here for info about how to use Image Capture to transfer images from a connected external camera.
For more info about Image Capture functions, see Image Capture > Help on your Mac or the Apple pages in this link.
    (2) To test for application-specific problems mentioned in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight " article, use apps like Photo Booth, QuickTime Player, iChat, FaceTime, or others intended to work with your Mac's inbuilt camera.
    (3) To test for user-specific problems mentioned in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 the "How to Troubleshoot iSight " article, you must have more than one user account.  Do NOT use the "Guest" account.  Click this link if you need help creating new accounts for testing.

Mac's are very very particular about the Ram they use. Mac's historiclly only seem to like top of the line when it comes to Ram.
    http://www.crucial.com
    or
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/
Both of these are considered the top of the line in Ram.
I have been in computers since 90 and I am not at all familiar with Lexor Ram

  • Macbook pro doesn't go to sleep when I close screen

Okay so, I don't know exactly since when this started occurring, but whenever I close the screen of my macbook pro, it looks like it goes to sleep. but it doesn't. then when I open it back up, the fan goes up to 100% and the macbook is all warm and whatnot. Basically what I think, is that it doesn't actually go to sleep. maybe this has to do with the powernap function?
I don't really have any other problems afaik.
    anyone else has this?

If you have issues like that (my MAcBook did not want to go to sleep while it was connected to power...)
what you can always do is power up the 'Terminal' and then punch in  'pmset -g assertions'. That's shoing you which application is holdng your mac back from sleep.
More details about how to use 'pmset' HERE.

  • MacBook Pro & Cintiqu 13HD & Another monitor

I have the new retina display MacBook Pro 15 inch 2.3Ghz with Retina display and a Samsung 24" monitor that uses my HDMI port. I would like to also purchase a Cintiqu 13HD. Is it possible to have the Cintiqu and the Samsung monitor all plugged into my MacBook Pro and have 3 monitors essentially? If I need to purchase other cables to make this happen please let me know. Thank you.

I have a 15" MBP and 23" Cinema Display, and my monitor has recently started doing similar things. Computer does not recognize display. Also the display's power on led on the front is not on constantly like it was in the past.
It feels like the monitor is starting to fail.
This monitor was never transported after it was first setup.
Computer normally operated in closed mode, using CD as primary monitor.

    Rhoda123

    Hi Rhoda123!
It sounds like you may need to reset a part of your system that deals with your video card, and this is commonly known as PRAM. We have an article that talks about the functioning of this part of your computer and how to reset it, which can be found here:
    About NVRAM and PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
Specifically, this section will probably be the most relevant to resolving your issue:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting NVRAM or PRAM, you may need to reconfigure your settings for speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and time zone information. If issues persist, your Mac's logic board battery (not a portable Mac's rechargeable battery) may need to be replaced. The logic board battery helps retain NVRAM/PRAM settings when your computer is shut down. You can take your Mac to a Mac Genius or Apple Authorized Service Provider to replace the battery on the logic board.

  • Available space on MacBook Pro Doesn't Update After Moving Files to iCloud Drive

I need to free up space on my MacBook Pro and have moved about 10 GB of files from my MacBook Pro to my iCloud Drive; however, the available space on my MacBook Pro doesn't show that 10 GB additional space available. How do I get my MacBook Pro available space to recognize that additional 10 GB as available?

No. Sorry. You may want to look into something like the WD My Cloud drive. I've seen the 2TB version refurbished on the WD site for as low as $99 recently. I considered one myself, but I'm not pushed for space as I have an iMac at home with a 500 GB internal drive and 4TB of external storage attached. I don't need that much accessible remotely. What I do need I sync with Dropbox or OneDrive (which also behave the same way as iCloud drive in that they sync to local storage and still consume disk space).
