  • MacBook Pro doesn't see hard drive

My MacBook Pro doesn't see it's hard drive. It doesn't show up when I press the Option key or in Disk Utility on the Snow Leopard disc. It was working for a while and then the computer started freezing, mainly when I was using Xcode. I thought it was an OS problem originally. Then it would occasionally not see the hard drive and come up with the "?" folder. It steadily got worse until it reached where I am now, not working at all. It doesn't see my Windows XP partition either. I have reset the PRAM and NVRAM, but to no avail. The OS boots just fine when I put the hard drive in a different MacBook, so it's not the hard drive. I have taken great care of this computer, rarely taking it out of the house. I did buy it used with a backlight problem though, so I don't know exactly what the previous owner did. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
Or if you have Diskwarrior or Techtool Pro use one of these utilities by booting directly from their cd.

  • How to install an SSD in a MacBook Pro and keep the original hard drive

Step by step instructions on how to install a Crucial SSD as the primary drive in a MacBook Pro and use the original hard drive as a second drive in place of the optical drive.
Apart from the time needed to back up your data and clone the original drive to the new SSD, you should be able complete this in less than an hour.

    Verifying
Install the SSD in the HDD slot
Install the HDD in the optical slot
Boot to the HDD and format the SSD
Boot using Command R and restore the operating system from Time machine to the SSD
Reformat the HDD and restore the data files to it.

Yes. Find the LR catalog file by looking in Edit/Catalog Settings/General. Close LR and navigate to that spot. The catalog file is the one that ends in .lrcat - move it to wherever you want. Next to the .lrcat file is a subfolder called Previews.lrdata. You can move that over as well, but if you don't LR will generate new previews. Double-click on the .lrcat file in its new home and LR will open with that catalog. Set Preferences to When Starting Up Use Most Recent Catalog.

  • MacBook Pro Retina with a 500gb hard drive - 400gb storage space?

I have a MacBook Pro Retina with a 500gb hard drive. I recently deleted a windows 8 partition, and now my macbook says its total storage capacity is 399.42gb. Is this normal? Or am I missing 100gb storage space?
When I deleted the partition through boot camp, there was an error, but the boot camp partition seemed to have been deleted completely. I ran disk utility repair and single user mode command prompt /sbin/fsck -fy to make sure my disk was properly partitioned, but it still shows 399.42gb total storage in my "About This Mac".

You did not remove your Windows partition correctly. You need to remove it using Boot Camp Assistant. If you cannot then you will need to repartition the entire drive back to a single partition/volume.

  • Macbook pro using a lot of hard drive space

I just bought the new macbook pro with the 250 gig hard drive.. but without even transferring anything at all to my new mac from my old.. it already says it only has 178.1 gig's of hard drive space available.. is it seriously already using over 50 gig's of space just out of the box???

What did you figure out? I am having the same problem!
    Have a 200GB HD
    My System Profiler states:
    Capacity=185.99GB which I understand BUT-
    It also states Available=26.25GB
Then, when I go to the Activity Monitor it states:
    Space Utilized=99.14GB
    Space Free=25.85GB
    With a total of 124.99GB
WHERE IS THE MISSING 51GB of memory?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
    What is the deal????
    Anyone?

  • Airport extreme doesn't see my hard drive (free agent 500Gb)

airport extreme doesn't see my hard drive (free agent 500Gb)

A few things to check are:
Make sure that the drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. The normal Windows format of NTFS will not work.
The USB port at the AirPort Exteme is under powered. You almost always need to use a powered USB hub with a drive at this port, even if the drive has its own power supply.

Do I need to buy a larger Time Capsule?
Probably yes. You might be able to get the full backup of the new MacBook Pro on the Time Capsule, but it will not be long before the Time Capsule is out of space.
Better to add a new Time Capsule and backup the new MacBook Pro to the new Time Capsule, and keep the old MacBook backing up to the old Time Capsule.
If you do not want to add a new Time Capsule, another option would be to erase the Time Capsule disk and start over again with new backups of both Macs and move forward.

  • Macbook pro doesn't see lexor 16gb usb memory stick.  (Windows PC does see it)

Heading says it all.  I'm baffled.  Windows PC sees the memory stick but my MacBook Pro doesn't.

Mac's are very very particular about the Ram they use. Mac's historiclly only seem to like top of the line when it comes to Ram.
    http://www.crucial.com
    or
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/
Both of these are considered the top of the line in Ram.
I have been in computers since 90 and I am not at all familiar with Lexor Ram

  • If a macbook pro with retina display's hard drive fail, do you have to buy a new computer

I am going to get a macbook pro and i'm not sure whether to go for a normal 15 or 15 with retina, i would prefer the retina for what i need it for but this is pretty important

The Retina model doesn't have a hard drive - it has flash memory storage (the same as an SSD, sort of). The flash storage is easily replaceable - even by the user - but the RAM is soldered in, so if you purchase a Retina display model, it's best to opt for the full 16MB of RAM.
Apple sells the non-Retina models with both hard drives and SSDs but their pricing for SSDs is ridiculous. You can add your own at a fraction of the price.
    Hope this helps.

I have the same camera and never had a problem connecting it to my PC. I just bought a MacBook Pro and now I cannot figure out how to get it to recognize the camera either. Sorry I cannot offer any suggestions, but wanted to get on this thread to see if anyone else can help. Good luck!

  • Disc Utility doesn't see new hard drive

    Hi Everyone.
I've just replaced my old 20gig IBM Travelstar 4200rpm with a new Seagate Momentus 7200.1 80gig hard drive. I used Carbon Copy to back a duplicate of the info on the Travelsdtar to an extrenal fireiwre drive. I can boot up from the fireiwre drive. When I go to format the new Seagate drive, disc utility doesn't see it. I even booted from a tiger install disc and tried it's disc utiltiy. Still couldn't see it. Before I go and reinsert the old Travelstar, maybe someone can tell me what I am doing wrong? thanks Andrew
PS. The Seagate had jumpers on it. The Travelstar didn't, so I took off the jumpers on the Seagate before I installed it..

Ti G4 Powerbook DVI and Intel Imac Mac OS X (10.4.9) Ti Book upgraded from 400Mhz to 667Mhz

Hi Eww. You are exactly right. What was I thinking (not). I reopened the laptop and had a good poke around. The Seagate comes with a jumper diagram on the case. I was correct to assume that no jumpers means " master". Why I didn't see that last night only wine will know.
It's not safe to surmise, because one drive has no
jumpers in place or jumpers in a particular
arrangement, that any other drive with which you
replace it should be jumpered the same way. Jumper
configurations may vary considerably from one drive
    model and manufacturer to another.
If you find that the drive is already correctly
jumpered (with no jumpers in place), then the problem
may be a poor connection .
Yes that was it. In my haste to get the thing going I only connected one row of the pins. Problem solved. It's purring along as I type. For the record it is much quieter than the Travelstar. Thanks for everybody's replies.

  • Macbook Pro incorrectly 'sees' external vga mirrored monitor while booting

So I've experiencing some new behavior with my Core Duo Macbook Pro. The past few days it has boot up with no login window. The background is the 'normal' Leopard star scene. If I press 'apple-F7', I do get a screen switch that shows a login window in normal vga resolution.
Once I get in, the display system prefs automatically comes up and wants to adjust the resolution down further. I thought it odd that it thought there were two displays connected, the machine's LCD and an external VGA and it is trying to mirror the two. When I turn off mirroring, I lose all of the system preferences as it seems the non-existent VGA screen has the title bar. I then need to do a 'detect display' and it will correctly re-adjust back to the single display.
This first started when it came out of sleep mode a few days ago and is now booting up fairly consistently with this phantom external VGA monitor. I've even had System Profiler show two different displays (LCD and VGA) prior to redetecting displays.
My question is: Why is this computer seeing an external VGA display when I have NOTHING plugged into the DVI port? I've never plugged anything into it since my 'fresh' install of Leopard. I've had the machine into the Apple store for a failing microphone (which was not fixed yet because they wanted to send it in). During the Apple store visit, they did reset the PRAM.
I'm really perplexed and getting annoyed at window flipping/adjusting in order to get logged in.
    Anyone?

Yes. Contact Apple using the links in the kbase article you mention.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't see my iPhone to sync it

I've been using my iPhone 3GS (OS 4) to run the Nike+ app, and have been syncing it nearly daily to my MacBook Pro (OS 10.4.11) after my runs. A few days ago when I tried to sync, the computer didn't recognize the iPhone was connected. I purchased a new cable and was able to upload the stored data yesterday with it, but today I have the same problem with both the new & old cables: the computer doesn't see my iPhone as even connected. Both the cables work when I plug them in to recharge the phone. I don't think the problem is the cable -- does anyone have any ideas about what to try next?

You need to update your software to 10.5.8 at a minimum. That's your problem, 10.4.11 is no longer supported.
    See here:
    Mac system requirements
    * Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
    * Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
    * iTunes 9.2 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    * iTunes Store account
    * Internet access

  • Macbook Pro doesn't see Airport Express

    Hi,
I've been struggling with connection to my Airport Express.
My Macbook Pro (OS X 10.6.7 + all the latest updates) doesn't recognize it anymore. Occasionally, my wireless network was briefly visible to the Mac, but connecting to it only led to a time out. My Windows laptop from work did not have issues connecting, and neither did my iPhone...
I've done a reset of the AE, which did not help (my Windows laptop now shows the Apple Network XXXXX that is supposed to appear). However, the Airport Utility that is supposed to help me reinstall the thing from my Mac will not recognize it either...
Anyone any suggestions on where to go from here?

I am having the same problem. Right now i am sharing the wireless connection through the iPhone because my MBP2011 won't even see the SSID broadcasted by the airport express.
I hace tried emptying the keychain, emptying the list of known networks but nothing helps. It had the same kind of episode last week but after a lot of rebooting and editing of the AE over ethernet cable it started working again.
Tonight I came home from work, started the MBP and it wouldn't see the network. It has popped up once but clicking on it only resulted in a timeout error message.
Any help would be much appreciated! The AE is only a month old..
    MBP2011
    OS: Lion latest update
Airport utility and AE are updated. The utility doesn't see the AE.
    iStumbler doesn't see the AE-network.
    Please advise,
    Sebastian
