My Macbook Pro doesn't sleep anymore :(

So I use my Macbook Pro sort of as a desktop connected to my hdtv since I've had my Macbook Air for traveling.
Over the past 6 months or so, it has remained closed, connected to my hdtv and connected to wireless keyboard/mouse.
Anytime I needed it, I would tap on the keyboard and it would wake up (lid still closed) and I would do my thing on the tv and put it back to sleep via the menu way. So on and so forth.
Now, when I try to put it to sleep, the tv just goes black and the Macbook Pro just sits there and runs without actually sleeping. TV totally black, fans are purring, indication light in the front not dimming.
Everything is up to date.
Any idea how to fix this? God I hope its okay because I could not afford Applecare. :-/

Okay, it was a software issue. They did a "Install from Archive" restore which basically reinstalls Mac OS X without removing applications and settings and it worked fine. Fortunately it was only software, there's a "sleep file" that can become corrupted and make sleeping act funky.
If you can't make it to an Apple store, you can reinstall Mac OS X and restore from Time Machine as another option.
Another possibility would have been hardware. There's something on the logic board, I think he called it a "sleep circuit" or "sleep switch" that can become bad, which results in a logic board swap out which can cost like $700-$900 bucks.
Phew!
Thanks again guys.

If you have backups, if you can and saved your ML installer, you can start over.
Prevention and taking a more proactive approach to system maintenance and repair, rather than fixiing a problem (likely pre-existing?) format the drive or partition and reinstall 10.8.1 and restore from backups.

  • Keyboard of MacBook Pro doesn't work anymore

    Hello to everybody!
I hope, that somebody out there can help me as fast as possible.
I spread a coffee over my 1-year old MacBook Pro keyboard and as fast as I could I turned it head down, so that the coffee could come out of the keyboard. I cleaned the keyboard and tried it out, if everything still works... in the begining it worked, but then some letters begun to not work anymore or I couldn't write some big letters anymore... so I desided to put my extern keyboard from an other computer on my MacBook Pro so I could at least write with this extern keyboard. But now as I wanted to put this extern keyboard away my MacBook Pro keyboard doesn't work anymore at all. Now I have the question, if I need to give in somewhere an order on my laptop that I want to use again the laptopkeyboard instead of the extern-one? The problem is, that normaly with windows I was used to just put the extern keyboard away and my computer realized on his own that it needs to use the own keyboard again, but with the MacBook Pro this doesn't work, so I'm a little bit confused and don't know, if my keyboard is now totaly damaged or if I just need some computer-language-order to tell my computer to use the normal keyboard again.
    Please HELP me!!!
    With best regards
    Kati

i'm not suggesting it also, but it could work .
Btw, i will take off the keyboard from the MBP, disconnect the conector, so you can really give him a bath and shake it.
and, as it is dead, what do you have to loose ?
to take off a keyboard is quite easy, google will give you some tutorials on that.
another , may be the best method, is to clean it really, but it's like a pain in the a.s to dissassemble it.
I have done that on Apple Pro keyboard and apple Imac G3 rev 1 keyboard, and they are working as usual now, but it took me some hours, with a real good tutorial from sterpin.net(in french, useless for your topic)
so, a good bath in distillate water, with a lot of shaking, you can also press on keyboard keys, shake it, and so on, and 2 days under a august sun..
distillate is not expensive, and I will suggest it better than alcool, as it will not damage any of others components. Have in mind that it really need to be dry, so, 2 days are not so much, and, when the keyboard is under the sun , shake it too from time to time, just to be sure that some water can't make a "water bubble" in a place.
    and give us some news.

  • My MacBook Pro doesn't work anymore

    Information:
    MacBook Pro Early 2011 13"
Upgraded ram 16gb 1333mhz DDR3 ram (worked for a while)
I tried to switch the ram slots and reinserted the battery. But nothing. When I plug the charger it's green but when I click the button on the side (battery checker) it says its 20% charged. When I unplug the charger and press the button on the side again it doesn't respond. When I bought this it was brand new. I saw that there was some dust in the fan when I opened it. Is there any solutions? My Mac doesn't work at all!

  • Macbook pro doesn't start up anymore

Guys i got a pretty big problem. My 1st gen macbook pro doesn't wanna completely start up anymore. When i press the startup button, I get the bong and when the apple logo appears, it suddenly restarts. So the bong appears, the apple logo shows up and then it restarts again: this keeps on going and i cant stop it unless i pull out the battery and power plug. I have no idea how this is possible: I did nothing unusual with my computer. The only alarming thing that happened before this was a kernel panic. After restarting my computer everything was fine and the mbp seemed to have recovered. So I then left it as I went for dinner and when i came back, the screen was black en frozen. So I turned of the mbp and then it wouldnt start up anymore!!!
    Can anyone please help me!!!

Place the OSX installation DVD that came with your computer and hold down 'C' during the restart. That should open up the installation/repair screen. There you can check your volume and repair it through Disk Utility. If you can't fix your drive here, you can restart your machine in target mode and backup your drive (given that you have another computer to back it up to) and then hard-format and reinstall. This might be a long and hard process but it should solve your problems. If you have more questions, just post.
    Cheers-

  • My MacBook Pro doesn't accept CDs or DVDs anymore, but it did when I bought it 2 years ago. How can I get it to read disks again?

My MacBook Pro doesn't accept CDs or DVDs anymore, but it did when I bought it 2 years ago. How can I get it to read disks again?
My quess is that the new software just doesn't allow the disk drive to work. I would love an explanation why this doesn't work and some help getting it to work. It's really frustrating because I get a bunch of CDs from work and never get to listen to them on my MacBook.

Make sure the discs are free of finger prints. The optical drive cannot read a disc with smudges and dust.
Check Finder > Preferences > General
Make sure:  CDs, DVDs, and iPods, is selected.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't want to start up anymore.

My MacBook Pro doesn't want to start up anymore.
When I turn it on, it turns on, followed by a white/light grey screen with apple logo. After a while a loading wheel appears beneath the logo and a loading bar beneath it. The loading bar loads to about 1/5 and then disappears, leaving the computer stuck on the the white screen with the apple logo and the loading wheel.
I tried to reset the PRAM, but it didn't help, it only got the startup sound to play when I turn the MacBook on.
What can I do about this? Hopefully I don't need to lose my files.
    Thanks in advance,

Seems like I have to use my Time Machine backup drive to reinstall the OS.
    No you don't.
OS X can be reinstalled all by itself leaving the programs and files alone, provided the drive is working correctly.
I'm not quite sure how to recover the files from Macintosh HD that I don't want to be deleted during this process.
The TM drive is almost useless because you can't boot from it to recover your latest files with.
That's why I gave the link  for the undelete boot drive, you create and boot from that, access your internal drive and grab files, then you can restore from TM or other things, like the repair list of fixes I gave you.
Could you help me a little on how to backup files manually most easily?
The problem is your machine isn't booting to grab the files.
So you need to create a external boot drive, then you can access the internal boot drive directly and grab files out of your Music, Pictures, Movies, Documents folders (etc) to the external boot drive.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Or is there a way to do this without deleting all of the files in my user folders on Macintosh HD?
Yes, you can choose to create a
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
and recover your filesnow , or you can chose to try fixing the machine without recovering your files, but your taking your chances as we don't know how seriously wrong it is yet.
If your willing to take a risk then proceed through this list, Step 1 - 8 etc., until the machine boots up.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
If the machine doesn't boot up then you need to create the external boot drive to get the files before proceeding with further steps.
If this is too much for you, then call a local PC/Mac data recovery/repair service and they will handle it for a large fee.

my macbook pro doesn't wake up after sleep

I'm having the same issue. I've had my logic board replaced twice now, which I did last week and then Monday I had to take it to a Genius Bar again because my hard drive cable was malfunctioning. I don't know why it's happening but I'm really starting to get frustrated with my machine. I bought my MacBook Pro brand new last year in September and ever since I've dropped it in November, it's been really glitchy. After I dropped it, I had to replace my Logic board, graphics card, and hard drive and they covered it.

  • How can I make my macbook pro go to sleep when I close the lid? Currently it doesn't sleep when on battery.

How do I make my macbook pro go to sleep when I close the lid?

For this and other power related issues the best first step to try is resetting the System Management Controller.
    Best of luck.

  • Macbook pro goes to sleep doesn't wake up...noticed the light on the power cord not on...

My MacBook Pro goes to sleep and this time will not wake up. I hold the start button down for count of 10 without results. I noticed the light on my power cord isn't on...and I've jiggled the cord and plugged it into a working outlet. Help!

All Apple laptops will go to sleep when the battery gets low, during this sleep you will not be able to wake it up.  based on what you are saying, to me it sounds like the battery is low because your power supply failed.  I would recommend either barrowing power supply from a friend, or bring it to the apple store, that way you can test it with a good power supply, it that is the case, replace it.

  • Macbook Pro Randomly Enters Sleep Mode For A Few Seconds

    Hi All,
My Macbook Pro has had this problem since a few months after I purchased it. While working or playing the laptop will randomly go into what seems like sleep mode. The screen turns off, I hear the hard drive stop and then a couple seconds later it starts back up on its own. Any Internet connection I had disconnects, but other than that it starts up as normal.
The problem comes and goes and doesn't seem to be consistent with anything that I'm aware of. Sometimes it happens once, then doesn't happen for days. Often it will happen several times in a row over the course of an hour.
I've called support and brought the laptop to the genius bar where they ran several tests, but were unable to figure anything out. Research online has shown similar issues with other users, but no solutions. The laptop is not stacked on anything magnetic, the issue occurs when running hot or cold and whether I'm on battery power or plugged in.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If this can't be resolved is it something I can bring to apple and get a replacement under my year warranty?

my macbook pro goes to sleep by it does not wake up afterwards. I have to restart it. I had recently to change the board in the attached Thunderbolt display, because I noticed that the same problem arose when the display was attached.
Now with the new board, it can't be the display's fault. I hope it is not macbook pro's main board fault. Maybe hasthe notebook board been damaged by the faulty display?
To bring my MacBook Pro to service will slow down my work. This is why I am posting this message, in the hope to be able to run a diagnostic test myself.
    Thanks a lot, in advance.

    Hello Aminetti,
It sounds like your computer goes to sleep, and will not wake up, so you must manually restart your computer. I recommend the troubleshooting in the following article:
OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5357
    Reset SMC
    Reset NVRAM/PRAM
    Test with external devices disconnected
    Try Safe Mode
    Try another user account
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • PLEASE HELP! My MacBook Pro doesn't fall asleep

My MacBook Pro doesn't fall asleep on its own any more. Currently, my Energy saver is set so that the display falls asleep after 1 minute, and the computer itself, after 3 minutes. Even if I don't have any softwares running, or anything else, it doens't fall asleep. Please give me some suggestion about what to do about this! (or would I need to take it to a shop? ... )

Well, since the machine does properly sleep when the lid is closed, my guess would be that you have a software conflict and not a hardware problem. Since your are up to date, have repaired permissions, and can't remember anything else that may have changed, it could be difficult to track down the culprit.
One thing you can try, it takes a bit of work but will help show if software is the real problem. You could create a new user account, and don't install anything new in it. Log in as the new user, and see if sleep works there. Often as you use your main user profile, you accumulate software programs and utilities, and sometimes then can conflict with one another. If you create a fresh user account, often it will not have the same software conflict.
If the new account sleeps normally, then you can assume that you have a software conflict somewhere, and you should think through what you have installed. If the new user account has the same problem, my guess would be that something is out of whack with the OS, and you need to decide if a full system reinstall is worth it (that is a big decisions, don't just jump into it).
Regardless of the outcome, after you have used the second account for a test, you can simply delete it.
    Cheers,
    Josh

  • Macbook Pro overheats in sleep

Recently I've noticed that my MacBook Pro doesn't always go into sleep when I close the lid or even if I click "Sleep" in the Apple menu. I'm a college student, so I usually put my laptop into its sleeve and into my backpack to take to class, thinking that my computer is asleep. When I take it out it's usually really warm and you can hear the fans going off. It then takes a while to wake up and cool down. And when it does wake up, it's slow (hello spinning beachball) and sometimes freezes. I've also noticed that when I put it into sleep the display goes to sleep but the sleep indicator light doesn't pulsate on and off like it used to; it stays on for a while. Sometimes after a minute it will pulsate like it's supposed to.
I have a MacBook Pro (13", mid 2012) and keep the OS and other software up to date.
    Version: OS X Yosemite 10.10.3
Processor speed: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory: 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Storage capacity: 500GB
I've tried almost all the troubleshooting steps you could find on the internet...
    Deleting junk and large files
Verifying and repairing permissions and disk
    Apple Hardware Test
    Resetting the SMC
    Defaulting the Energy Saver options
When I put   pmset -g into Terminal I get:
    Active Profiles:
    Battery Power 1
    AC Power -1*
    Currently in use:
    standbydelay         4200
    standby              0
    womp                 0
    halfdim              1
    hibernatefile        /var/vm/sleepimage
    sms                  1
    networkoversleep     0
    disksleep            10
sleep                10 (sleep prevented by UserEventAgent, UserEventAgent, UserEventAgent, UserEventAgent, UserEventAgent, UserEventAgent, UserEventAgent)
    autopoweroffdelay    14400
    hibernatemode        3
    autopoweroff         1
    ttyskeepawake        1
    displaysleep         1
    acwake               0
    lidwake              1
I don't know what "UserEventAgent" is or why it appears 7 times. When I did this I only had chrome and the Terminal open.
And when I do  syslog | grep -i "Wake reason" I get:

Has anyone had this same problem and been able to fix it? I want to try everything I can before taking it in to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store. Any help is appreciated.

Firstly try Apples solutions to the problem you're experiencing: OS X: When your Mac doesn't sleep or wake - Apple Support
A quick browse on the internet reveals that you aren't the only one with this problem, here are some solutions that the great Apple community have used:
Try running verify/repair disc permissions, then restarting. Also, try closing some app's you aren't using before the sleep.
Create a new User in System Preferences for testing. Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar. Log into new User. You can skip the Apple ID setup. Does the Mac sleep correctly in the new User? If no, then the problem is with your base files. If yes, then the problem is in your User's folder.
If there are print jobs in the queue that cannot be printed because my printer is switched off, my iMac does not want to go to sleep either.
After printing the jobs, sleep works here again.
I've trawled the web looking for a cure for this and I came across a suggestion to unhook the ethernet cable and just connect by wifi. It's working for me. So far!
Workaround - System Preferences>>>Energy Saver>>>Computer Sleep - Never - Uncheck all options. = Put Mac in Sleep Mode Manually.
I found my cause/solution!  In my Mac Preferences/Sharing I had Internet Sharing selected.  It states when selected that computers connected via A/C power will not sleep while internet sharing is turned on. For giggles I unselected it, and voila, no more sleep issues. Not sure how or why I had it selected in the first place.
    Hope this helps.
