My MacBook Pro fan runs while sleeping

My MacBook Pro fan runs constantly, even while sleeping.
The problem started about 2-3 months ago, but was pretty rare. When I noticed the problem, I would restart the computer and it would stop for 1-2 weeks. More recently it has become more constant, and now it always has the fan running when it's sleeping.
Any ideas on what I should do? Thanks!

Not sure how well they'd work on a Macbook as there aren't any vents on the underside but it couldn't hurt and they're quite cheep.

Before I suggest advice, I urge you to keep your machine under 160F at all times. I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but you can seriously damage your machine with that kind of use. Some solders melt at 225F, weaken at 190F.
You may have to replace the fan - or you may need to clean the inside of your machine and fan. It's hard to tell without inspecting your machine.
Or you may find that you need to get a different browser, and become more aware of temperature; laptop machines are much more sensitive to termperature issues than desktop Macs. Some day, you'll thank me for that advice.

Mainstage 2.1 makes my Macbook Pro fans run full bore.

Upgraded to V. 2.1 and Snow Leopard. Now my Macbook Pro fan kicks in at full blast whenever I play any patches or run backing tracks. Cpu hit looks low and memory usage is average. This never happened before. Any ideas as to what's happening?

My MBP fans have always run at full capacity when using MS 1, 2 or 2.1. They start out running normally but then start to rev up after a couple of minutes. You could try running some fan control software to manually adjust your fan thresholds but ultimately, does it really matter if the fans are running hard? Seems to me that they're running hard because they need to....MS is still very hard on system resources even if the meters say otherwise. It's the only app I run that causes the fans to run flat-out.

I have had a MacBook Pro (2011) running OS X Lion then OS X Mountain Lion since last August. For the past couple of months, I've had a problem with the fans on the laptop. I made my first trip to the Genius Bar because the fans seemed like they weren't even working. The fans got extremely loud, making strange buzzing / humming noises, and the laptop got very hot. Apple replaced the fans free-of-charge, and I was out of there. Not one week later, the fans started up again with a new problem. When the fans started going, and the laptop became very hot, the screen would shut itself off at random times. So for about 3-5 seconds, the keyboard / display would shut off, with the laptop still up and running (I could still hear the fans.) I went back to the Apple Store last week to get it fixed. They kept it for 3 days to run a full diagnostic, and they discovered... nothing. The paper they gave back stated "No Trouble Found" and I went home without a solution. I've been looking up my problem, and it seems a lot of people have it. So I checked out the Activity Monitor, to see what came up... I would post the numbers on here, but they're rapidly changing... What does that mean? My friend and I both got our MacBook Pros at the same time, and his has no problems, so I compared what we both used them for. He mostly uses his at home for photo editing and Safari. I use mine all-day, every day for school work. So am I overusing the laptop? Also, when I charge the laptop, I don't shut it down, I just close the lid and plug it in... I actually rarely shut down my laptop altogether. Can this be the problem? Sorry I'm writing so much, but this problem has become really annoying, and I want it to be fixed before school starts in a few days. I'm pretty much writing every possible reason that has come to mind why this has been happening...

My mom's 2007 17" MacBook Pro keeps running its fans. Both fans run at 3400RPM minimum when it is awake. There is no fan-controlling utility installed. Is it normal for them to be running that fast? Also, the temperature (147˚F) seems a bit high.

Yeah, only running Mail and stuff. Actually, 3500RPM is my iMac's maximum fan speed.

I have recently purchased an apple monitor and have a MBP I connected up in closed clamshell mode.
I would like to leave it asleep all the time (as you can't restart it without opening clamshell).
The MBP is in a draw under the monitor.
Today I put the computer to sleep (monitor went blank) and went away for 6 hours. Before I left I heard the fan working at a very low intensity but thought it would stop once the mac had cooled down. When I got back 8 hours later the fan was still going at the same very low intensity (but working nonetheless) and the Macbook was still warm. I had left the draw open so am not too concerned that is the cause. Is this normal? I was under the impression that when asleep the laptop should stop making any sound at all, and have no hard drive function in play. I'm not comfortable leaving the macbook pro asleep if the fan is needed on 24/7.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Im having the same issue, when its warm and my laptop is closed and defiantly in sleep mode with the front LED flashing slowly with no external monitor. Laptop is 100% defiantly asleep as everything stops at first i can hear it. after a while i come back and the fan is running, and the laptop is warm. Quite annoying. I also noticed when i unplug the power the laptop goes into a proper sleep but when connected to power with the lid closed it seems to be restless at times. I've even had the laptop replaced and the new one does exactly the same thing.

Install iStat Menus 4.05 and find out what your operating temperatures are. If they are not high, then you may have a bad sensor that needs repair.

MacBook Pro fan running constantly

My 3 month old MBP's fan started running constantly a couple days ago, even when I close the lid. My usage is about 90% internet - no CPU intensive games or really anything else.
This happened about the same time my two small children were trying to play with the computer - they had gotten into the Guest account and somehow the computer was locked, so I did a hard power off. Since then (roughly) this fan problem has been present.
I can't find any software settings that would cause the fan to run constantly. Any suggestions? The machine is running very smoothly overall, and has been a bit cooler on my lap (as one would expect I suppose). But it's annoyingly loud and I'm worried the fan will die from overuse.
Any suggestions?

And let me say what a bizarre OS or fan glitch that, I guess AS OF DEC 21, 2013, still UNFIXED BY APPLE?
Like Jodi, my MBP is, hmmnnn...3 - 4 months old. And her post was over a year and a half ago. Also, bizarre that Apple has a Knowledge Base article dated from Oct. 2012 so it's clearly known about it for x amount of users...
Even if they solved it in Mavericks, they should still patch and support OS 10.8

Macbook pro retina hot while sleep/charging

I know there are a lot of posts about the rMBP getting hot, but I tried searching but couldnt find an answer specifically to my question.
my rMBP 15" runs fine, but i've just recently noticed that it can get really hot when i put it to sleep/close the screen and leave it charging. - it seems to be hottest on the underside on each side
As soon as i re open it fans turn on and it cools down within a few minutes.
Is this just a result of the batteries charging up quickly? and is it normal?

If you are so concerend and you have Apple Care or are still under warranty, call tech support to take full advantage of your warranty before it runs out. Make sure you get a case number.
Otherwise, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you. Diagnostic testing is free!

Macbook Pro fans running high from startup

Hi, I'm new to this forum, but I've been looking around quite a bit, both here and on other forums to find a solution to this problem, unsuccessfully.
I have a Macbook Pro, 15", 2007 model, Intel Processor. For a while now, the fans on the computer have speeded up to 6000 RPM almost immediately from bootup. Before today, the computer also overheated quite badly, topping at 96 degrees Celsius as monitored by istatmenus. Today I decided to open the computer (warranty already expired) and clean out dust and whatever else might be clogging up the fans. Using a high pressure air bottle I got rid of a few dustbunnies, no copious amounts, but something. After reboot, tthe temperature seems under control (CPU at 44 degrees celsius), but the fans keep running high.
I've tried out all the recommendations I found in other threads:
Reset SMC a few times
Reset PMU
Reset PRAM
There are no activities using up processor power, usage at the time of writing is about 20% per core with Google Chrome, Mail, Skype and some other stuff running.
I've uninstalled both SMC Fan Control and Fan Control apps completely according to instructions (removing library files etc.)
I've installed Temperature Monitor to see if there's any problem with the sensors. All the sensors seem to be working fine, except perhaps one: SMART Disk Hitachi HTS542525K9SA00 which is not giving a reading in Temperature Monitor.
However, iStat Menus gets a reading from the Hitachi Disk, saying it's currently at 35 Degrees Celsius. Thus, it seems as though the sensors are all online.
I haven't been able to do an Apple Hardware test since I haven't got the installation disc at home.
So... I'm basically out of ideas, and getting more than a bit frustrated since I'm using the computer for audio recording, which isn't much fun with fans blasting away at noisy 6000 RPM.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be and how I might be able to solve it?

Yep, you could say that.
I had one of those screws unscrewed. Sure, by itself ))
but tightening it fixed the problem in my case.
Normally "nice guys" are lazy so it might be just some small unnoticeable thing.
If you were not nice with the "nice guys" you could expect more elaborate joke ))
If it is the case, If I were you, I would check termo pads, size of the screws, then tighten all up and that will be it.
For the size of the screws as for anything else you should try google.com or iFix.it
You don't really need to be not nice to be screwed )
Last joke of the "nice guys" here was replacing the trackpad connector. They told me that my MacBook is not booting and it is not the problem I've brought it for. Fortunately I have 4 Macs of the same model so it was quite easy to figure ))
Anyway, be safe, be nice, be a little bit paranoid in a sense of making connection of what happened in what circumstances.

Macbook Pro fan running constantly and CPU running slow

So, I have a Macbook Pro 2010 2.3 i7 that has started running really slow and the fan is running constantly.
In activity monitor it shows a kernel_task running constantly at around or above 200%.
I have tried all the regular tasks. PRam reset, SMC reset and nothing seems to fix it.
I have also tried a system reinstall to no avail.
Maybe I'm on the wrong track, but from what I have read, the kernel_task might be trying to slow my CPU down because it thinks it is being overworked?
Maybe the fans are also being activated because it thinks the computer is too hot?
Anyway, if anyone has any idea as to what I can do to figure out what is going on, let me know. Thanks

MacBook Pro Fan running fast after Mavericks update

Hello All! I have a 2009 MacBook Pro 13 inch and I have noticed that after I updated to Mavericks my fan has been running really fast and my computer getting warmer than normal. It's always on a table so there is nothing blocking the port in the rear. Any ideas on how to fix this?

MacBook Pro fan running constantly with no utilization

Just got my boss's MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) model back from Apple after a GPU related repair (which appears resolved). They replaced logic board amongst other things.
As soon as I turn it on I hear the fan, quietly running. If I close the lid, it runs for about 20 seconds then stops. This is not loud; they are not running full blast (that is a much different sound). But I can hear it in a quiet room. Owner of the laptop was complaining about fan noise before; I assumed he was stressing the CPU but now I can see what he was complaining about.
Activity Monitor (with 'All Processes' selected), sorted by CPU, shows nothing running more than 1-2%, and 'Idle' at the bottom is showing about 99.65%. So there are no runaway processes. The room (ambient temp) is about 66F (not overly hot). The laptop is on a tile counter - no obstacles to airflow. Same issue occurs on battery and wall power. Over a several hour period, I never hear the fan stop.
I did an SMC reset (ctrl-opt-shift-Power) and this seems to have no effect (this seems to be the magic bullet for most of these issues, after tracking down runaway processes).
So my question is - does anyone know what the design is - could it be that the fans are designed to run all the time on this model, but they are (supposed to be) super quiet and not audible at low RPM, and maybe these fans have been become noisy, therefore I'm hearing it? Was this a specific design issue for this model of MacBook pro (with NVidia GPU)?

Update. I downloaded a nice free program called "Macs Fan Control" from MacUpdate. It shows me that I have two fans "Left Side" and "Right Side" and they are both running at the minimum RPM; the window shows Min RPMs as 2160 and 2000 (left/right), and the 'current' is 2161/2005 (changes all the time but very close to the minimum). Max RPM shows 5940/5499 (left/right). "Control" is auto, meaning the program is not trying to control the speed.
I tried setting the minimum below the values above (eg, I tried changing the minimum to 1,500) but it would not let me. I tried setting the minimums above the values shown, and it allowed me. There is obviously a 'safety' feature in the fan program to prevent slowing down the fans to a value below what is considered safe.
I then installed the same program on my MacBook air. I cannot hear any fan on my MacBook air, but - Macs Fan Control shows a single 'Exhaust' fan running at minimum value of 1200. If I press my ear hard against the bottom of the MacBook air, I can just about hear a faint, faint noise.
So my theory now is - the fans are always running on every MacBook (Air, Pro, etc) - the issue is, how fast they run. And, it would appear (from my MacBook Air experience) that the fans are generally quiet.
I then used the program to speed up the left side fan; the noise grew significantly and was unpleasant. At 4,000 RPM it was a deep, throaty sound. I then slowed it back down, and did the same to the right side fan; at 4,000 RPM it was a gentle 'whoosh' sound. SO ... this tells me the left side fan is messed up (bad bearings, etc). I PRESUME the two fans are the same, and should sound 'similar'. Would others agree with my assessment?
