My MacBook Pro has become sluggish since installing Mavarick.

I installed the new Mavericks OSX on my MacBook Pro the day after it came out.  From that day, my computer has become sluggish, especially if I have muliple windows open and/or apps running.  I originally thought that perhaps I had a virus, so I ran my anti-virus program and it came up clean.  I tried restarting my computer a number of times, with no improvment.
Has anyone else had similar problems??  Anyt suggestions?
Thanks!!

Back up your documents and everything else important to you, not that there is any reason to believe your hard disk may be failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
To help determine the possible causes of this behaviour read the following. None of what follows is intended to fix anything, but it will provide the additional information required to advance troubleshooting:
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red.
When it finishes restart your Mac and test again for operation. If it's still not behaving as you expect it should, please post the results of EtreCheck in accordance with the following instructions:
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Etrecheck will be in your Downloads folder. Open it from there. You may see the following dialog box:
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.
After completing the above please determine if the problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
Some users have reported an SMC reset to be beneficial. Be sure to read the procedure carefully and follow all the steps exactly as written, even if they seem inapplicable or trivial.

Recently my Macbook Pro has become sort of lagging. The lagging is sort of intermittent, but is possibly becoming more frequent. Sometimes when I type, it takes a while to catch up and gives me the rainbow wheel mouse while this happens. I have been getting the rainbow wheel thing a lot lately due to lagging in typing or clicking a link and it takes (seemingly) forever to load (based on how fast it used to be). Sometimes when I scroll using the trackpad (my main method of scrolling), it takes a while to actually scroll. When I open a new tab, what should be my top sites sometimes is a distorted/pixelated picture of black or black and white or whatever was on the screen previously. I am also having a lot of flash problems: I'll be using the internet and then randomly the flash will just close and I'll get an apple pop-up saying that my flash program unexpectedly closed and I should send a report to apple. I refresh the page and the flash is working fine, but the closing will still randomly happen. I use my macbook pro mainly for internet use and microsoft office use since I am a student. This only started recently and I haven't used any microsoft office products since before this started so I have really just been using Safari (it's been a while since I've used firefox also). Therefore, I don't believe an application is causing this. As I am typing this, I ran a software update and found that 10.6.8 is available. I think I will hold off until I get a few responses on this discussion. This computer is JUST over three years (my extended warranty just ran out... of course).
Thank you for reading my post. I greatly appreciate any help I can receive.

Run ALL of  the free OnyX maintainence and cleaning aspects and reboot.
Run OnyX > Verify > Preferences and write down any corrupt ones, move them to your trash and reboot

Check the status of your browser plug-ins here and update.

Use Firefox, it's faster and more secure browser with tons of great add-ons.
Use the free LibreOffice, it will read all your OfficeMac files, is better written than Microsoft's buggy stuff, more secure too.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Since installing Yosemite, my MacBook Pro has become slower.  Is there any way to fix this problem?

Ever since I installed OS X Yosemite on my mid 2012 MacBook Pro, it has started becoming slower and slower and glitching out.  Is there any way to fix this?  Here is my diagnostics:
    Problem description:
My Mac is rather slow.  It started happening after I installed OS X Yosemite

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • My Macbook Pro has become a little slow since last week. It Hangs Frequently. What to do ?  Need Help.

    Changes since last week :
    1. Boot time has become very slow. Takes approximately 2 to 3 minutes to boot.
    2. When I am using it, for sometime it is fine. Then suddenly it hangs. The cursor gets transformed into the processing sign, I cant click anywhere. I have to wait for the processing sign to transform back to the normal cursor. This takes upto 30 seconds. When it transforms back, everything is normal again. This happens every 1 hour.
    3. When I am listening to music in Itunes, Sometimes the music stops suddenly. Nothing happens for sometime, then its fine again.
    Could you please help me?

Your HDD may be experiencing issues.  Look at the appropriate sections in this comprehensive troubleshooting document:

  • My mac has become slow since installing mavericks iOS

Since installing the Mavericks OS my Mac has become slow and unresponsive, it freezes up all of the time and I always have to wait for the different software to load once I have clicked on the icon.
Before I installed Mavericks when I clicked on a program it opened straight away and I could use it immediatly, is any one else having this problem?
    Thank you

You have page-outs (see the last line of the report), which means that tasks are being paged out to your virtual memory (i.e., your hard drive), because your RAM is full. The page outs might go down if you fix some of the possible problems below, and your performance might improve; if it doesn't, you might consider putting more RAM in your Mac.

    Suggestions:
First, make sure you have a good backup.
What to do about the items in green:
The items in green are third party software that may be a problem. They run all the time in the background, and thus may be making things slow. You can test this theory: try a safe boot (restart, hold down shift until you see the Apple logo). A safe boot does some diagnostic checking and then starts up without third party added-on software. If this eliminates the symptoms, then you know the problem is with a third-party item. Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
I don't know if the green ones are a problem or not, but they are on the list of suspects, and you're going to need to do some research yourself.
    The general philosophy is:
Figure out what the application is that is responsible for a particular green item.
If you can live without the application, it, uninstall it. You should uninstall the entire application that is responsible, not just the green bit. The best way is with an uninstaller from the developer of the application. If there's no uninstaller (one of the hallmarks of crapware), then an internet search may help (as in, "uninstall crapapp mac", where crapapp is the name of the software in question). After uninstalling the app, restart, see how your symptoms are, and run Etrecheck again. I am a fan of AppZapper for uninstalling apps, if there is no uninstaller from the developer. AppZapper - The uninstaller Apple forgot.
Sometimes, after you have run an uninstaller or manually uninstalled a suspect application, one of those green bits will still be on the Etrecheck report. If your Mac's symptoms have resolved, it's better to leave well enough alone and leave it there. If you must, you can try a modified Finder search to find the stubborn green bit and remove it. These system files do not show up in a default Finder or Spotlight Search.
If you can't live without this app, then at least make sure it is up to date and compatible with Mavericks.
What to do about the items in red
These are definite problems and should be fixed if they are Apple software. They should be fixed or uninstalled if they are third party developer software.
For red Apple items, I would try:
repairing your hd. Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery Then restart, reassess performance, and rerun Etrecheck.
If that doesn't work, I'd try Techtool, which can occasionally fix something that disk utility can't. Techtool Pro 7 Then restart, reassess performance, and rerun Etrecheck.
If that doesn't work, I'd reinstall Mavericks over your current installation. Restart, reassess, and Etrecheck.
If that doesn't work, you're looking at the nuclear option: backup your documents, erase your HD, and do a clean reinstall of Mavericks.
For red non-Apple software, I'd uninstall it and then recheck with Etrecheck. Then if you must reinstall it, make sure it's up to date and compatible with Mavericks.

  • Mid 2012 macbook pro has become slow and has a malware on it i can't locate

I have a Faux flash player Malware window pops up randomly, used bit defender and activity monitor to try to find it with no luck.
Im looking for a free way to fix that guy.
RAM also seems to always be heavily used even with little open and running, windows lag when switching between Chrome windows and often gets overloaded on Vectorworks 2013 now, If i can get the flash update thing taken care up I may upgrade to 2X 8gb RAM if that can't be figured out to expedite
(Activity Monitor currently shows 8gb physical mem with 7.97 used, wasn't a problem often before Yosemite)
    Heres my Etrecheck

The update alerts are fake, and are intended to dupe you into installing malware or disclosing private information so that your identity can be stolen.
You might get the alerts when visiting a website that has been hacked. Don't visit the site again. If applicable, notify the site administrator of the problem, but don't send email to an unknown party.
If you get the alerts when visiting more than one well-known website, such as Google, YouTube, or Facebook, then they may be the result of an attack on your router that has caused you to get false results from looking up the addresses of Internet servers. Requests sent to those sites are redirected to a server controlled by the attacker. It's possible, but less likely, that the DNS server used by your ISP has been attacked.
    Back up all data.
Unlock the Network preference pane, if necessary, by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your password. Cllck Advanced, open the DNS tab, and change the server addresses to the following:
              8.8.8.8
              8.8.4.4
That's Google DNS. Click OK, then Apply.
    In Safari, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If you’re using another browser, empty the cache. Test. If the fake update alerts stop, see below. Otherwise, ask for instructions.
The router's documentation should tell you how to reset it to the factory default state. Usually there's a pinhole switch somewhere in the back. It may be labeled "RESET." Insert the end of a straightened paper clip or a similar tool and press the button inside for perhaps 15 seconds, or as long as the instructions specify.
After resetting the router, quit the web browser and relaunch it while holding down the shift key. From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. Do the equivalent if you use another browser. Open the Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.
Then go through the router's initial setup procedure. I can't be specific, because it's different for every model. The key points are these:
    1. Don't allow the router to be administered from the WAN (Internet) port, if it has that option. Most do.
    2. Set a strong password to protect the router's settings: at least ten random upper- and lower-case letters and digits. Don't use the default password or any other that could be guessed. Save the password in your keychain. Any password that you can remember is weak.
    3. If the router is wireless, or if you have a wireless access point on the network, use "WPA 2 Personal" security and set a different strong password to protect the network. If the router or access point doesn't support WPA 2, it's obsolete and must be replaced.
During the time the router was compromised, you were redirected to bogus websites. If you ever connected to a secure site and got a warning from your browser that the identity of the server could not be verified, and you dismissed that warning in order to log in, assume that your credentials for the site have been stolen and that the attacker has control of the account. This warning also applies to all websites on which you saw the fake update alerts.
Check the router manufacturer's website for a firmware update.
If you downloaded and installed what you thought was a software update, ask for instructions.

  • My macbook pro has become agonizingly slow, what can i do to fix this problem?

    I have a macbook pro, ( os x 10.9.3, Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i7  Memory  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB )
that has become agonizingly slow and unresponsive. there is always a several second response time after every mouse click and it can take several minutes for any and all websites to open. Even when I open my home page it can take a minute. Is there something I an do to fix this problem. I do have Bitdefender running but it did not seem to affect operations when I installed it several months ago. This is a relatively recent development and getting worse. Help!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. It will be slow, but should not be as slow as what you describe. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My MacBook Pro has become unbearably slow. What can I do to get it back to its normal (peak) performance?

When I originally purchased my MacBook Pro a few years ago, it was blazing fast. Since then the reaction time of the CPU has gotten progressively worse to the point where the laptop is virtually unusable. Windows are laggy and slow to load. Apps will become unresponsive for apparently no reason. Nothing seems to make it better. I cannot pick out a specific time or event that may have acted as a catalyst for this loss in performance. Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Adrian

Hello, I'm having a problem with my mac's speed as well, though I don't think it is memory that's causing it.
It's brand new, late 2011 , has had os x lion from the get go. currently have version 10.7.2
    Free space 474.69 GB
    free RAM 1.65 GB
It takes about 10 mintues from turning on to get to my desktop screen, and the little pinwheel comes up constantly when trying to open an app.  typing lags for 5-6 seconds when i type one letter, and the internet alternates from moderate speed to showing lots of pinwheel spinning.  It also takes 3-5 minutes to turn off when before it used to be seconds.  When it falls 'asleep', it often doesn't wake up, at least not for a few minutes.
I tried safe boot, but i didn't see any difference in speed when i restarted.
I tried resetting the PRAM, no difference
    I then tried command R for the disk utility, and i believe i clicked on repair permissions for the hard drive (the one that said macintosh Hd);
it ended up displaying "open error messages"- that mentioned AirPort Utility and various font names. Despite saying the the repair had less than a minute, it stayed on this screen for a good 30-40 min until i was fed up and shut it down
I really don't know what else could have done this; the only other thing i downloaded was realplayer sp, but I got rid of it all and everything i downloaded with it. I don't have any huge programs like photoshop either. I don't have any other users created aside from just me.
    please help.

  • Macbook Pro has become slow

I had OS X Snow Leopard as the default installed OS X when I bought my Macbook Pro(15 Inch) in the fall of 2010. Since then I have been upgrading/updating the software as and when the App Store prompted me that the software update is available. I was very happy with the speed & overall working of my Macbook Pro. However since OS X Mavericks came, things started slowing down & now since I have upgraded to OS X Yosemite, now version being 10.10.2, speed is a thing of the past & my Mac is not just slow, but most apps hang midway. The processor is 2.4 GHz & Memory is 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3. Can anyone out there suggest if there is a way to make my Macbook as fast as before if not more? Also, if there is a way to :
    a) instal a faster RAM & a bigger HD incase either of these or both are problem?
    b) If reverting back to OS X Snow Leopard is possible? (I am aware this could be a remote possibility but still hoping).
I am based in India & no one here has a clue to trouble shoot Apple products let alone service them well. Any help from my American/European friends in the community will be much appreciated. Thanks a ton !!
    Regards,
    N.Vishwanath

OWC has great how to videos, look under the Support link at the top of their website. Upgrading RAM on the older MacBook Pros is very simple (be sure to get the tool set). Replacing the hard drive isn’t really complex either. I’m drawing a blank at the moment - I think the model you have requires that you remove some rails on the old drive and place them on the new hard drive.
At any rate, upgrading the RAM will improve your computer’s speed and the addition of an SSD will make the computer seem totally new. Both upgrades gave my 2009 MBP two more years of life and it now has a new totally happy owner.

  • My MacBook Pro has become extremely slow

Overnight my MacBook Pro (2012) has become very slow when trying to complete any task. I have plenty of space left and have emptied my trash but the problem persists. For added detail, I did just get an iphone which may be slowing my computer down through Icloud? Also, I did try downloading a file from a program called vuze, but I have done that before with no issues. Otherwise, I havent changed or done anything out of the ordinary to bring about this issue. If you have any suggestions that would be great, thanks.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait about a minute. Then paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “exec sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for your password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator rights.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. There wiil be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress until it's done. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." That's because the forum software falsely identifies something in the post as a violation of the terms of use. If that happens, please post the results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

    You may need more RAM.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Hi, my MacBook Pro has become very slow... what could be causing this and what can I do to fix it?

Hi, my MacBook Pro is working very slowly.. what could be causing it and what can I do to fix it??

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.
