  • Macbook pro has been running slow and not restarting

A few days ago I had to shut down my macbook because it froze. When I tried to restart it, it would sit on the grey apple screen and then after a few minutes it would restart again, and again, never getting past that screen. I called apple support and they tried to help me do a few things, non of which would work. Then they said I needed to reinstall OS Leopard but I did not have the discs, so I am waiting on them to be shipped. However, the next day I turned my mac on, and it worked. Since then I have turned it off and it has not worked again, but after doing a pram reset it works. However, it is very slow, only the safari browser will work, I cannot empty the trash (among other things) and just now when I tried to download an article off the internet, it said my disc was full and I had to delete things in order to clear space. Does anyone know if this is a hard drive issue, so if just reinstalling OS Leopard or upgrading to Lion will help? Any ideas what I should do?

Sounds like a failing hard drive. Take it to an Apple Store for testing.

  • HT1338 my macbook pro has been running hot off and on

My macbook pro has been running hot off and on for the last couple of days

Are you running andy anti-virus or "cleaning" software? Both can shorten battery life and run up the temps.
Take a look at this Apple article:
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity
Note in Step 3 you need to make a change if running Mavericks. In Mav, Activity Monitor's "Show All Processes" function moved from the application window to the application menubar:
Setting to "All Processes" is the only sure way to catch some suspects. Not noted in the article is this: AM won't tell you much if you run it shortly after a restart. Use your computer as normally as possible for at least a half-day before running the test. Also not clear is that you should be looking for any process that uses more than about 10 percent of the cycles. I've checked a lot of Macs with AM and, assuming you quit any user applications you started (other than AM) nothing should be a percentage larger than a single digit in a healthy Mac.

Back up your Mac, if you have not already done so. To learn how to do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
You inadvertently installed adware. Eradicating it is simple and you don't have to download or install anything to fix it. For an explanation or how this may have occurred, how to avoid it in the future, and for Apple's recommended solution read How to install adware.
Google Chrome is known to run notoriously poorly on Macs. If you want to run Google Chrome, you may need to install more memory, upgrade your Mac to a newer model, or both. Use Safari or Firefox, both of which will run well and do not litter a system with a plethora of resource - hungry "helpers" and other constantly running intrusive processes such as those Google insists upon installing.
Adobe Flash Player is outdated. If you need to use Adobe Flash Player, you must keep it up to date. New versions appear very frequently.
You are running a torrent client. Doing so will leave you vulnerable to malware, data theft, or both.
Some users have resolved otherwise inexplicably poor performance with an SMC reset. Read and follow all the steps including those that may appear to be inapplicable or trivial.
If your Mac still performs poorly, please determine if the same problems also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
If none of the above resolves your concern, more information is required. To augment the information you already provided, follow the instructions below.
If your Mac is momentarily unresponsive, consider the following.
Launch the Console app - it is in your Utilities folder. You can find it by selecting Utilities from the Finder's Go menu.
If the log list column on the left is not already displayed, show the log list by selecting Show Log List from Console's View menu. Select Show Toolbar if it is not already shown.
Locate system.log in the list and select it. Many date and time-stamped entries will appear, hundreds of them, and you must find the entries relevant to your Mac's problem.
To do that click the Clear Display button in the Toolbar. All previously displayed log entries will be disappear.
Next: Perform whatever actions cause the Mac to exhibit the slow behavior. If the problem is caused by errors logged by the system, the Console window will show them being recorded in system.log.
One or more of them, along with their time stamps, may reveal the reason for the problem you describe.
Copy and paste those log entries in a reply. If hundreds of the same repetitive messages appear, please edit them before posting. There should be no need for more than a few log entries.
Most of the entries will be cryptic but will contain information you might consider personal such as your Mac's name. If you do not want that information to appear, delete or obscure it when posting your reply. Leave enough information so that the entries can be deciphered.

  • My MacBook Pro has been running slow since I upgraded to OS X Yosemite. Any solutions?

I have a MacBook Pro Processor 2.5 Intel Core i5. Memory 4GB. Since I have upgraded to OS X Yosemite it has been running extremely slow. Any solutions to getting it back up to speed?

If you enabled FileVault when you upgraded, it will take a few hours for the conversion process to finish, and during that time performance will be reduced. Otherwise see below.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • MacBook Pro has been running outrageously slow and been freezing entirely

Over the past two weeks, my three year old MacBook has been running outrageously slow, even with only one program open and simple programs at that, like preview. Many of the times, It completely freezes up and I have to reboot the system. I have been attempting to fix this, cleaning up memory, running virus scanning (which hasn't been going all the way through the scan but shuts down), repairing and verifying the disk, etc. I am worried I have a virus or something. Help!

    Frank,
when I mentioned reformatting the drive, i meant the external harddrive that I am attempting to back up to. Have reformatted it successfully, but for whatever reason, when I try to back up my macbook's internal harddrive to the external volume, it gets stuck at 2.12 gb and then stops all together, saying there is an error. I have tried this several times and have reformatted and repaired the external disk several times, so I don't think it is the issue.
    S.M.A.R.T. status reads verified.
Checking Console now...not entirely sure what I'm looking for here...typed in retry into the search for Console log, came up with several similar to this "4/30/13 1:08:32.399 PM coreaudiod[263]: AHS_DefaultDeviceManager::SynchronizeDeviceList: the device list should never be empty - retrying". I'm not really sure what this means, or really what I'm looking for in this application.
I use trend micro security, which is a required virus scanner for my college. I've had it loaded since I bought my macbook, nearly three years ago, and have only had a problem with it once (last year when mountain lion came out, there was a problem installing the new software because of some issue with trend micro). But never before has it acted this weird. Before, it would run scans normally, but not it gets 10%, then suddenly says its done and that it found nothing, although it still had several hundred thousands files left to scan.
My internal drive is 250 gb, and I currently have a little under 75 gb free.
Looking at activity monitor now, but again, I don't exactly know what I'd be looking for in a program that shouldn't be there. the largest usage currently is kernel_task, and I have no idea what this is, but honestly, i don't know what programs I would be looking for that would be running my computer at all times.
    Any further suggestions or tips?

  • My macbook pro has been running really slow out of nowhere

    Problem description:
Macbook pro is all of a sudden being extremely slow. Anytime I click anywhere and even whenever I start typing something, the spinning rainbow beachball appears for like 15 seconds before anything happens. And even loading applications and internet webpages also takes a long time. After the problem arose, I upgraded to Yosemite thinking that it would resolve the problem, but it’s still hasn’t changed anything. Just a few months ago I changed my HDD to an SSD, and my mac was working perfectly fine until a few days ago. What’s going on and how can my mac work like normal again? Thanks.

Check that your third-party software is compatible with Yosemite: See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
If you have anti-malware software installed please uninstall it.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

  • My MacBook pro has been running slow lately. It's not much about the internet, I mean slow in loading things like apps and pictures. When I double click an image on my desktop it takes forever to load it up. Help?

I would really like to get it back to how it was when I purchased it, every thing loaded up quickly. My friends have the same model as I and theirs run much faster than mine.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the system log for messages that may indicate a hardware fault. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|nspace-h|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • My Macbook Pro has been running a little slow lately.

Any suggestions on how to speed it back up? I have been deleting unnecessary apps, but I don't know what else to do! Thanks in advance! I have had it for about 2 years now and I am about to be heading to college so I can't have it run slow now!

Slowdowns can be software or hardware related.  The steps in the link below will help determine which it is.  The simplest steps are listed first.  Have you downloaded any new software or made an OS update lately?  If so that may help point to the issue.

    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

• My Macbook Pro has been running Macintoah HD for 8 hours . What do I do...

So my mac was being slow yesterday so I decided to restart it. But once I did, I got the grey screen and the prohibitory sign. So I looked up ways to fix this. I managed to get myself to the Macintosh HD window. I pressed the 'Verify Disk' button in the bottom right hand corner and waited for it to complete. However, one red line showed up in the text box and it read 'Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks'. Seeing the 'repair disk' button, I assumed I could click the red line and click repair. However, when I did, my pointer turned into the spinning wheel and so I cant click anything... I looked these results up online and it said that thhere is a possibility that I may get the spinning wheel and that it may take a while. So I waited for about half an hour but it wad getting late so I ddcided to go to bed... 8+ hours later... same page, same spinning wheel... I was planning to just restart my computer my holding down the power button but was afraid that'd do something to the contents of my mac... Any help would be greatly appreciated... (and just my luck to have this happen to me on a holiday...)

Hold down the power button until your system powers off. Wait 10 seconds. Power it back while holding Command+R (assuming you're running OS X Lion or above). At the OS X Utilities menu, go into Disk Utility, select your Macintosh HD and just click the Repair Disk button. No need to Verify as you're already done that. Let the Repair run to completion; then restart your system and test.
