My macbook pro has mountain lion installed and it will not play dvds

my hubby's macbook pro has mountain lion installed, and will not play dvd's.  It says it is unsupported, I also have a macbook pro but has snow leopard on it, mine will play dvd's.  Please help me, I can't figure out why his won't play the same dvd's as mine.

The most frequent problem in an optical drive is a dirty lens.  Use a lens cleaning DVD, a few shots of compressed air in the slot or a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglass lens cloth) wrapped around a business card and gently inserted inside the slot.  If no success, the Apple store genius bar is the next stop.

If your MacBook Pro had Snow Leopard on it at one time then sure. (Early 2011 or earlier)
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Obviously choose the second partition to install into. It has to be OS X Extended journaled formatted in Disk Utility (BootCamp software makes it a MSDOS/FAT32 formatted partition if you used that to partition with)
If it's a Early 2011 or Late 2011 that came with 10.7, it's possible, but it's not easy.

If you can't install Snow Leopard, there is a thread over at MacRumors how to run Snow Leopard in a virtual machine program under 10.7 or 10.8

  • I bought a macbook pro with Mountain Lion installed.  Can I install a copy of mountain lion on my other mac for free?

I bought a Macbook pro with Mountain Lion. Can I install Mountain Lion on my other mac for free? How do I do that? Thanks!

On the bright side, it's only $20.
And I would certainly like to have the ownership (and even a copy of the installer on my archive drive), "just in case."
Here are some questions -- which I cannot test because it's not my situation:
Has anyone acquired a pre-owned Mac with Mountain Lion installed but which shipped with an earlier OS version? For those in that circumstance:
Have you been able to apply Mountain Lion update(s)?
How about reinstall ML with Recovery HD?
After either updating or reinstalling, does ML appear in Purchases in App Store?
    Just curious.

  • Macbook pro has a white screen and is basically not allowing me to do anything.

My sisters macbook pro has a blank white/grey screen for some reason. We have been at school all day, we come home to find a small dent on the right of the trackpad, but the laptop had been closed all day. I have already looked at other peoples discussions talking about restarting and putting the Mac OS disc to reinstall and things like that... But the laptop is not allowing me to eject, or put anything in it. I have clicked on all different combination of buttons but still the white/grey screen. There is a disturbing whurring sound when the laptop starts up, almost like a small scratching noise and something has definetley been broken. I put the charger in and the small light goes orange teling us its not completley done for.
Has this happened to anyone else before?!
And we really need some HELP !!

The lid was opened and something was dropped on it is my guess.
You'll have to take it in, user damage is not covered by AppleCare/warranty.

  • How do i request the up-to-date program for macbook pro for mountain lion os x i do not get the processes can someone explain it to me with detail

i cant follow the instructions they do not make sense do i request it when i get the make or when os x is released

The third post (by BitBytr) quotes the page that I am referring to.  If you read it -- either his post, or the web page, you would realize it says ver batim:
Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between June 11, 2012 and the date when Mountain Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from the OS X Mountain Lion release date to make a request.
Ironically, the fifth post (also by BitBytr) emphasizes the exact same quote.  It's the same statement found in two places on Apple's website.  Why are we even arguing this?
Either way, everyone has referenced Apple's web site.  Congrats, folks.  You have valid references.  But the OP wanted it "Barney style", or broken down to much easier terms to understand, which I feel was provided in my first post.  If anyone disagrees, I welcome corrections or easier wording.  Afterall, we're here to help OP.  Momacandipad, has your question been answered?

  • Brand new iMAC, Mountain Lion installed, dashboard widgets will not download. Webpage times out. Any suggestions?

Just purchased a brand new iMAC and sucessfully performed download and install of Mountain Lion (free upgrade). Discovered that dashboard widgets will not download as webpage times_out in both Safari and Firefox. Already set security to allow downloads from 'anywhere' but with no change. Downloads from anywhere else works fine, just widgets won't work, and I've been trying for several days now. Any suggestions? (firewall is off).

  • HT202159 I have purchased Mountain Lion today and it will not download properly, it just quits. Advice please!!

    Thanks

Check your connection speed. Ideally you will need a connection of more than 15Mb/s. Else it would time out before it complete the download.

Likely because it's a not self contained and/or it's game and copy protected, so install it via the developers instructions instead, which likely means it will have ot be uninstalled off the first machine, the developer contacted for a new license key before installing on the newer machine.
If you want it on both machines, you will need to likely buy another license.
Most developers are fine with transfering license between machines, you have to contact them.
They just want to make sure it's only on one machine so they are not getting robbed.

can't install from application install dvd and i can't update to 10.6.8 after i restore my macbook pro from mountain lion. when restart and i press command it still has recovery mountain lion show on my screen.

What model is the MBP? Did it come with OS 10.6 or a later OS? Is the install DVD one that came with it or something else?
You can't run an OS older than Mac on it.
But if came with 10.6 installed & you have the system discs, you should be able to erase the drive & reinstall the original OS.

  • Is the Dell 3115CN compatible with a Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion? If so, how can I install the drivers and install the printer on my mac?

I hace a Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion OS.... I need to print from time to time but don't have a new printer to go with my new macbook. Would a 3115CN work with it or no? If so, how can I set it up? Setting up a printer on a mac is a bit different from doing so on a windows machine and I am new to the macworld.
All help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes. I'm running this printer from 10.6 through 10.9 and it's worked fine with all versions. Dell released updated drivers a while ago that make it much easier to administer this printer.

If you look at the User Tips tab, you will find a write up on just this subject:

The subject of buying/selling a Mac is quite complicated.  Here is a guide to the steps involved. It is from the Seller's point of view, but easily read the other way too:
    SELLING A MAC A
Internet Recovery, and Transferability of OS & iLife Apps
    Selling an Old Mac:
    • When selling an old Mac, the only OS that is legally transferable is the one that came preinstalled when the Mac was new. Selling a Mac with an upgraded OS isn't doing the new owner any favors. Attempting to do so will only result in headaches since the upgraded OS can't be registered by the new owner. If a clean install becomes necessary, they won't be able to do so and will be forced to install the original OS via Internet Recovery. Best to simply erase the drive and revert back to the original OS prior to selling any Mac.
    • Additionally, upgrading the OS on a Mac you intend to sell means that you are leaving personally identifiable information on the Mac since the only way to upgrade the OS involves using your own AppleID to download the upgrade from the App Store. So there will be traces of your info and user account left behind. Again, best to erase the drive and revert to the original OS via Internet Recovery.
    Internet Recovery:
    • In the event that the OS has been upgraded to a newer version (i.e. Lion to Mountain Lion), Internet Recovery will offer the version of the OS that originally came with the Mac. So while booting to the Recovery Disk will show Mountain Lion as available for reinstall since that is the current version running, Internet Recovery, on the other hand, will only show Lion available since that was the OS shipped with that particular Mac.
    • Though the Mac came with a particular version of Mac OS X, it appears that, when Internet Recovery is invoked, the most recent update of that version may be applied. (i.e. if the Mac originally came with 10.7.3, Internet Recovery may install a more recent update like 10.7.5)
    iLife Apps:
    • When the App Store is launched for the first time it will report that the iLife apps are available for the user to Accept under the Purchases section. The user will be required to enter their AppleID during the Acceptance process. From that point on the iLife apps will be tied to the AppleID used to Accept them. The user will be allowed to download the apps to other Macs they own if they wish using the same AppleID used to Accept them.
    • Once Accepted on the new Mac, the iLife apps can not be transferred to any future owner when the Mac is sold. Attempting to use an AppleID after the apps have already been accepted using a different AppleID will result in the App Store reporting "These apps were already assigned to another Apple ID".
    • It appears, however, that the iLife Apps do not automatically go to the first owner of the Mac. It's quite possible that the original owner, either by choice or neglect, never Accepted the iLife apps in the App Store. As a result, a future owner of the Mac may be able to successfully Accept the apps and retain them for themselves using their own AppleID. Bottom Line: Whoever Accepts the iLife apps first gets to keep them.
    SELLING A MAC B
Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:
Step One - Back up your data:
    A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.
    B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.
    1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.
    2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.
    3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right
    side.
    4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be
    sure to opt for that.
Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal
    startup drive.
Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:
    1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.
2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.
    3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.
    4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.
    5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See.What to do with iCloud before selling your computer
Step Three - Install a fresh OS:
    A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X
    1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.
    2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.
    3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.
Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
    4. Install OS X.
    5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.
    6. Shutdown the computer.
    B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because
it is three times faster than wireless.
    1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X
    Utilities window appears.
    2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.
    3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click
on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button
and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.
    5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
    6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.
    7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
    8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.
*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.

    Hi,
I purchased Huawei Dongle and trying to connect with my new MacBook Pro (OS- Mountain Lion) USB port 3.0 but unfortunately it does not support.
When I plugged in my macbook the power is flowing in dongle due green light blinking twice in every 3 sec but no connection found or diver shown.
Please let me know how I have to use it. I got some suggestion for USB hub 2.0 but It does not make any sense and driver installation.
So please suggest proper direction to use it and provide link to install any driver.
    Thanks

Yes Clinton I did same, but they were (Huawei customer support) surprised about this problem, They behave like they have no idea about USB 2.0 and  3.0 knowledge. They handsUp that reason I posted my problem in this forum.
So is there any better solution to use any mediator between these USB version handling, Please let me know.
    Thanks

  • Upgraded my macbook pro to mountain lion from snow leopard does this mean i can upgrade my imac as well for the same price? And will it mess it up?

upgraded my macbook pro to mountain lion from snow leopard does this mean i can upgrade my imac as well for the same price? And will it mess it up?

You can upgrade the iMac for no extra charge - sign into the App Store there, download and install 10.8.
I recommend that you make a backup (Time Machine is probably the easiest method) before you install, and make sure that you are not using any applications that are incomptible with 10.8 (eg Office 2004) - other than that, it should go smoothly.

I have tried installing a disc to try and reinstall the operating system.
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.
If you did manage to reach the desktop after doing any of the above
my battery was dying after a few minutes so I was trying to kill the battery and recharge it to see if I couldn't get it back to a full charge.

Update to 10.4.11 using the combo update or Software Update along with all the other updates that goes along with it.

I updated my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion and now it is slow in starting up and loads a number of probrams. How can I fix the problem?

Have you tried starting in Safe Mode and see if the slowness still occurs?
    Restart holding the "shift" key.
(Expect it to take longer to start this way because it runs a directory check first.)
If this works look in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login items and delete any third party login items (-), you can always add them back with the (+). Also look in /Library/Startup Items. Nothing is put in that folder by default, so anything in there is yours.
    Reboot normally and test.
