My Macbook Pro is about 5 years old.  Is it worth upgrading to the new OS?

I have a Macbook Pro that is sort of old.  I haven't used it in more than a year because I had a laptop through work.  I recently lost my job and dusted off my macbook to use.  I will need to update to Snow Leopard in order to update to the current system.  Is it worth doing it on this laptop

If you upgrade beyond 10.6, you will not be able to use some, if not all, of your apps.
Therefore before you go beyond Snow Leopard look carefully at the apps you have that you will use. Upgrading apps is not inexpensive. This site offers a comprehensive compatibility table:

I appreciate the prompt response.  Having read several threads, you can appreciate why I would be hesistant to upgrade to the Lion.  All I basically use is Office for Mac and the other basic functions such as email/calendar/address/contacts...etc. I have read horror stories about peoples stuff dissapearing into cyberspace and obvi dont want that to happen.
That's all nonsense. Most people don't post anything if they don't have any problems. People who do have problems usually have very specific reasons for them that they have caused themselves.

  • Is it possible to mirror the display on the Macbook pro which is two years old to my iMac which is four years old? Macbook pro is running OS X Lion 10.7.5 and the iMac is running OS X 10.6.8 (10K549). Neither of them have Thunderbolt ports.

OK, well I would go with what Apple says in writing but if you want to take a trip to visit the Genius Bar that won't hurt.
Good luck, I'm 99% certain  you will find I was correct but please let us know.

  • I bought a Macbook Pro 15 last month, is it worth upgrading to the new model?

    Hi,
I bought a Macbook Pro 15 last month (the lower end model) on interest free credit. I mainly got it for music and film editing. I was aware that Apple were about to announce a new series of Macbooks but kind of needed it then! Anyway, is it worth me selling this Macbook and buying the newer model that was just announced? I know I'd lose a couple of hundred £ through selling this one but would it be worth the upgrade?
Also, is there another upgrade to the new models coming? I.e. will there be a smaller scale update in 6 months?
    Thanks!
    Will

  • Uses for old iPhone once we upgrade to the new 3G iPhone

I'm considering upgrading to the new 3G iPhone. What happens to the old iPhone? Can it be used as a simple music player with the phone feature turned off?
    THANKS!

Yes, you actually have to buy the iPhone 3G to upgrade from your old iPhone. You will get the $199/$299 price. If you had bought it after May 27th, you could have exchanged it in-store with a $20 restocking fee, but this isn't the case, so you will get the subsidized price of $199/$299.

  • I have a Macbook Pro less than a year old running slow

I have a macbook pro that is less than a year old and it's running pretty slow.  This is the first Mac I've ever had and always heard they are great and never get viruses.  The software versions in OS X 10.8.1.
Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

A mini DisplayPort display or adapter won't work plugged directly into the Thunderbolt port on the back of a Thunderbolt display, but will work if a Thunderbolt disk drive (with two Thunderbolt ports) is connected between the Thunderbolt display and Mini DisplayPort device.

  • How do I fix a black screen on a MacBook Pro (less than a year old)?

My daughter was working on her MacBook Pro and the screen went blank.  She has rebooted and tried holding Shift key when rebooting and also Command V.  Neither did anything.  The keyboard is responsive and the computer is sounding/acting like normal except she can't see anything.  She does not have a way to hook up to TV to see if it is the screen.
Any suggestions?  She is as college without a car and not sure when she can get to Apple store and laptop is required for school.

If the screen is black throughout the boot process, meaning no gray screen, no Apple logo, etc., it's likely a hardware problem. If she can't get to an Apple store, she can call and Apple will send a box for her to send it in to them. Of course, that lengthens the time it's out of her hands.

  • Why does my macbook pro, less than a year old, not show airplay

My new apple tv does not work with my new macbook pro.  No silly box/triangle icon shows up on the operating system.  I cannot use airplay.  No help anywhere.  No documentation.  No diagnostics.  Just fail. Fail. FAIL.  Now my Apple TV will not upgrade...it tries and FAILS.

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). It also requires the computer to be using wi-fi.

  • I have a 24" iMac that's about 4 years old. I've done all the software updates as they come along but I'm having issues and wonder if I should update/upgrade the whole operating system. I currently have 10.5.8 and I'm wondering where to go from here.

My mac won't open PDFs anymore from email or websites and I've tried everything to my knowledge to correct this. There's website I that I want to utilize that requires the lastest verision of JAVA and my OS 10.5.8 is too old to do a download of the latest JAVA. So I'm thinking I need to upgrade the OS to something newer??  I'm thinking my hard drive needs to be cleaned up also (re-format?)
This computer is running slower and slower lately also.
    HELP!

My mac won't open PDFs anymore from email or websites
That's odd.  My Mac is 10 years old and runs OSX 10.4 and I can open pretty much any web site I want to, and I have yet to encounter a PDF I cannot open (more advanced ones with Adobe Reader).  My computer isn't slowing down but everything else is speeding up.

What serial and model numbers were known to be  Products Affected,  MacBook Pro, models with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Take the computer to an Apple Store because your graphic card is damaged. The computers affected were sold between May 2007 and September 2008, so if your Mac is one of these Macs, Apple will repair the computer for free

  • I need help finding a workable web program that is not CSS based.  I tried IWeb and it just won't work for me.  Way too limiting.  I've been using a 12 year old copy of Macromedia Dreamweaver, but the new Dreamweaver is CSS

Been building web pages for nearly 20 years, starting with GoLive.  Went to Dreamweaver about 12 years ago, the Macromedia version.  Tried going to iWeb when it came with a new Mac, but found it way too limiting with it's CSS template base.   Unknowlingly, I then bought a new copy of Dreamweaver.   Ooops, Adobe had bought Macromedia and Dreamweaver, too, is now CSS based, which for my money makes it useless to anyone who likes simplicity.   Now I find that even iWeb has been discontinued.  I was told yesterday that Apple doesn't have a web program any more.   At 12 years old, I just don't think it's practical to try to load my old Macromedia Dreamweaver into the new Mountain Lion (I'm getting a new Mac), though it is running, barely, in Snow Leopard.
I need to find a web builder program that will permit simple construction of educational pages, nothing fancy, nothing artistic, just create a page, give it a color, type or drag in text, insert a table, insert pix in the table blocks, add text under the pix... done!    I should note that I am not looking to build traffic.  I teach simple things for free and people who want to learn those things (antique sewing machine repair, quilting, building longbows) find me.
I've downloaded trial versions of half a dozen or so programs and looked at maybe 20 more, but all are either CSS based and drive me insane with requirments for constantly making rules and template models, and/or require that you base your web presence in their server.   Also, many will not work with pages built in other programs.  I maintian a volume of over 1000 web pages, many requiring regular updating, and they have been with the same server for more than 15 years.  I'm not about to change.
So, anybody know a simple, old fashioned web builder that's happpy on a Mac platform?
    Captain Dick

Although not supported anymore, iWeb does still function using Mountain Lion...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/mountain-lion.html
... and you can purchase it from Amazon.
Start with a blank page using the Black or WHite template.
All modern websites use CSS and there are thousands of free templates to be had if you want to use a code entry style application. You will need to go this route if you want to create a site that is viewable on mobile devices although you can create an iPhone version using iWeb...

  • MacBook Pro (Late 2011) - Turns Off as Its trying to update to the new update. Please help!

    Hello,
Today something strange happened to my macbook pro. I turned it on, and when I went to check for updates the new update was available, so I clicked it.
Once it completed at the app store, it restarted and a whire screen with the Apple logo appeared and a bar.
Literally the bar only completes like 25% of its shading and then it shuts off. I don't know what to do, please help me.
    Thanks for reading.

It sounds like there’s a startup issue with your MacBook Pro since installing the latest software update. I understand that this may be a frustrating issue, but the article linked below provides a lot of great information that can help you resolve the issue.

  • Screen Fading on Macbook Pro just over a year old

My screen is fading around the edges and a line across the middle of the screen as if the coating is wearing off.
I have done nothing but take car of my mac. NO Chemicals no rubbing just a light dusting every now and again with micro fibre cloth I actually got from Apple.
I first noticed it after only 6 months of having the mac but just thought it was some grease and didn't bother. (Im not an obsessive cleaner haha). but recently when I came to give the mac a spring clean it was the screen itself. Gutted as now I'm out of warrantee.
Surely the screen should last at least a few years..
What can I do ? I believe this is a manufacturing fault.

Just ask; if you purchased it from an Apple store or re-seller, they would usually oblige.   If you purchased it on line  you could backtrack on your emails of the approximate date (One use for Time Machine) for they would have sent you a receipt.
