My macbook pro is frozen

My daughter has recently purchased a Mac Book Pro. For whatever reason it is frozen. I am unable to close any programs. There is a little pinwheel that just keeps spinning around. Any thoughts on what to do would be appreciated.
Thanks

My Macbook Pro is frozen on the login page with a white screen and only my login picture. How do I fix this? I can't turn it off and I closed it and let it charge but it's still not working. It's only 3 months old and was working perfectly fine 30min before this happened.

    Hello Kierasully,
I would start your troubleshooting with the article below for issues of not being able to log in to your Mac. Start with booting up in to Safe Boot as well as resetting PRAM on your Mac. If that does not work, then verify the hard drive with booting to the Recover HD and go to Disk Utility to verify it.

My daughter's 13" late 2011 MacBook Pro has frozen (null sign displays) after Yosemite installation. I can, however, boot from a clone of my MacBook Air that is on an external drive. I reinstalled Yosemite on the MBP HD, but it still hangs in mid install. Despite the fact that I can boot from the external, could it be the RAM that's the problem? I'd happily put 8 GB in if it seems probable that would solve the problem. I've tried all the suggested procedures that I've seen posted here. Disk Utility, and my older version of DiskWarrior indicate the HD is OK. I have DiskWarrior 5 on order.

Boot the MBP with the OPTION key down.  If successful, you should see two HDD icons,  Select the recovery partition (on the right).
From the 4 option menu select Disk Utility.
Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair.
If the disk cannot be repaired, it will have to be replaced.
    Ciao.

  • My iCalendar (MacBook Pro) is frozen

My iCalendar (MacBook Pro) is frozen along with a portion of something I copied to paste on the calendar. I cannot delete. I performed a Force Quit and Restarted, to no avail. My iphone calendar works fine.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    Back up all data.
Before taking each of these steps, quit (force quit if necessary) the application. After taking the step, relaunch and test. When the problem is resolved (or when you complete Step 3 without resolving it), stop and close the Library folder.
    Step 1
Hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. From the folder that opens, move these subfolders (some may not exist) to the Trash, leaving the Library folder open:
    Caches/com.apple.CalendarAgent
    Caches/com.apple.iCal
    Saved Application State/com.apple.iCal.savedState
    Step 2
Move these files from the Library folder to the Desktop (again, some may not exist):
    Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.iCal.helper.*.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.CalendarAgent.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.iCal.Alarm.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.iCal.AlarmScheduler.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.iCal.helper.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.iCalExternalSync.plist
    Preferences/iCalExternalSync.plist
Here "*" stands for a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes. If the application now works, you may be able to put back some of the files you moved in this step, relaunching and testing after each one. Eventually you may find the one that caused the problem; delete it. Recreate your settings as necessary.
If the application still crashes, put back each of the files you moved in this step, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. You don't have to put back the folders you moved in Step 1.
    Step 3
Move this folder to the Desktop:
    Calendars
Note: you're not moving the Calendars application; you're moving a folder named "Calendars". If there's no change, put the folder back where it was.
If the application launches after you move the Calendars folder, the event database is corrupt. You have two choices:
Restore the folder from a Time Machine snapshot or other backup that predates the corruption.
Use a third-party application such as Calendar Cleaner to try to repair the database.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My MacBook Pro has frozen mid restore, I can't even shut down. Please advise.

My MacBook Pro has frozen mid restore, I can't even shut down. It has been like this for a few days now.  Please help!

Press and hold down the power button until the system Turns Off. Then try to start it again.
I suspect you have some type of hardware problem. As you didn't mention why you were doing a restore I suspect it was from a system crash of some type. What caused that crash, if there was one, is the reason the system has now Hung again trying to restore it.

If your temps are back to normal then the only thing that I would do is to completely uninstall the Avast software. See Thomas Reed's excellent Mac Malware Guide and pay particular attention to the "Do I need a/v software" section. 99% of the time, you don't and Mr. Reed only suggests the use of two av apps.

    Hi guys and gals

Only option is to force shutdown and restart yet this does not resolve issue.....back to square one!!!!
    Help???

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List   from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

  • Macbook Pro Completely Frozen

    Hi,
i've got a Macbook Pro Intel 2.2, running 10.4.11. The touchpad was acting a little strangely in the last week, and now my computer has completely frozen and is unusable. The keyboard and mouse do nothing, only the power button works to shutdown and start up the computer. I've tried doing an SMC reset but this made no difference. Does anyone know how to fix this?
    Chris

If the computer turns on, you can try to boot in to safe mode by holding down the shift key when you turn it on. If this works, you can then insert the install DVD and boot into it by restarting and holding down the C key. You can then run permissions repair and check the HD. If that all checks out fine, you can restart into hardware test by holding down the "D" key when you restart (with the install dvd in place). Make sure that all peripherals are disconnected. If your hardware test is normal and everything else has done fine, reboot (just to be sure) and then do an "archive and install" from your system dvd.
    Good luck!

  • Failed attempt to restart after updates, MacBook Pro now frozen on start up.

Hi, please forgive my ignorant description, I am useless outside of emails and documents.
This morning I clicked yes to update my MacBook Pro. I think it was on mountain lion and had an upgrade bundle. During the restart the charger plug was dislodged for a few seconds. It came up with an error message (along the lines of "not all updates successful" and prompted for a restart. I restarted and after the start up sound I am frozen on a white screen that says -
panic (CPU 0 caller 0 xffffff8028e59241): "Unable to find driver for this platform:\"ApCI\".\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2050.20.9/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExp ert.cpp:1548
Further down it says Mac OS version not yet set.
I tried turning it off and on again and ended up back at the same screen message. Also tried control option escape and nothing happens. I live in regional SE QLD, nearest Apple store is in Brisbane. Is there anything I can do or do I have to wait till I can get it to a professional?
    Thanks.

Boot into your Recovery partition (if you can) by holding down the command and R keys whilst booting. Once there elect to resinatll the OS (you may need your Apple ID and password for this). You'll not erase any data, etc., by installing a fresh OS.
Once your OS install is complete, you can restart and go through the update process again, this time remembering not to unplug from mains while the updates are installing.

  • Late 2008 MacBook Pro 17" frozen with pink and green pixels

    Hi all,
Hope someone can point me in the right direction with my Macbook Pro problem. I have a late 2008 version of the 17" MacBook Pro. I've been using it today and it's been completely fine. that was up until I was uploading my recent holiday photos to iPhoto. I left it to upload and came to check on it after 5 minutes. I found the program had frozen and pink and green pixels were spotted all over the screen.
I turned the laptop off by the power button. When I started her up again I found the white screen with the pink and green pixels everywhere and apple logo appear. It starting booting and then just stopped. the screen froze and nothing was working. I've tried booting up in safe mode and again it just freezes.
Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated as I'm lost without my computer. I've included a photo I've taken if the frozen screen.
    Many Thanks,
    Dean.

According to MacBook Pro (Early 2008 and Late 2008) - Technical Specifications you have a model with
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor with dual-link DVI support and 512MB of GDDR3 memory
Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors
    DVI output port
VGA output using included DVI to VGA adapter
    Built-in iSight camera
The 8600M GT has several recalls for GPUs, which had a 4-year free repair from date of purchase. It may be too late in your case. You can find the recall notices via internet search if you want to.
You should run the AHT -Using Apple Hardware Test

  • My new to me Macbook Pro is frozen

This is kind of a long winded story, but I want to make sure I don't miss a beat.
I recently purchased a Macbook Pro 13 inch with 2.4 Ghz Dual Core with 8 Gigs of ram.  It is used and is just under two years old.  It was purchased with a freshly scrubbed hardrive and Snow Leopard installed on it.  It worked AMAZING for the first day.  Being a PC guy forever and ever, this is my first Mac experience, to which (as you can imagine) was just incredible.
As I was checking out my new Macbook Pro, and I found the "Check for updates" - to which I found there were 5 updates available.  It installed them and restarted the computer.  After this, the Macbook slowed WAY down.  It felt like it was operating at 30% of it's original potential.  I hadn't installed any other software or done anything at all, with the exception of checked my e-mail and look at a few of the applications.  I did some research on these forums, as well as a few other locations on the web.  I tried some of the tricks people reccomend like "repairing the permissions", restarting the computer, amongst other things and none of them seemed to help.  I checked again and there were 3 more updates (for Safari, and I can't recall the other two).  Restarted after the updates still no help.  None of these problems started happening until the initial update to 10.6.8 was performed!
After further reading, apparently people who updated to 10.6.8 have had a lot of other similar issues and either said that they downgraded back to an earlier version OR they upgraded to Lion.  I then decided to bite the bullet, pay $30 in the appstore and update to Lion.  I downloaded the app and the installation began.  It has now been about 4 hours, with the installation still not complete.  It will stay at 45 minutes for a long long time, then it will start counting down as it's installing, then freeze at 5 minutes, THEN it starts the installation clock over again to 32 minutes and is counting down again.  I am not sure should I try to turn it off and turn it back on?  Let it keep going?  Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

You should never upgrade a misconfigured system. That will usually make things worse, not better.
I suggest you start over. I'm assuming you backed up your data before starting the Lion installation. Boot from your Snow Leopard disc and repartition the internal drive with the default options. Then reinstall SL. You'll reboot into the Setup Assistant. Import your data from the last backup. Then run Software Update again. Test. Only when you have a properly functioning 10.6.8 installation should you install Lion.

  • MacBook Pro seems frozen during sleep

I just experienced an odd problem with my 6 month old MBP. I left the computer with the lid open and came back 30 minutes later and screen was black, as if it had gone to sleep. However, the sleep light was not pulsing and the computer would not wake through typing or clicking the trackpad. I tried closing the lid, and the sleep light went on solid, not pulsing. I opened the lid and the sleep light went back off and the computer still would not wake. Finally I just manually turned it off with the power button.
Has anyone else experienced something similar to this? Any ideas about what might be causing it? I have not recently downloaded any new programs.
    Thanks so much!

I have a similar problem. MacBook Pro 6,2 sleeps and wakes perfectly if I close the lid or manually select sleep from the Apple menu. If it sleeps from the Energy Saver preferences, however, it takes from 4 to 20 minutes for the indicator light to start pulsating. When I attempt to wake, I will get either a freeze or lock-up (spinning beach ball, or missing cursor and inability to do anything by trackpad, mouse or keystroke) or I will get a black screen. At this point, if I close the lid, the indicator light goes on steady. I have to shut down/restart using the power button. I got this computer in December 2010. I can't state with certainty that the computer has had this issue since day one -- I didn't notice the problem until I had let the computer sleep on its own, which was about two weeks after I first started using it. The only mod I have is the SSD drive I replaced the original HDD with, which I did before I even powered on the computer for the first time.
I worked with an Apple engineer for several hours (via phone) doing a variety of things such as resetting the SMC, logging in to a new account, booting into safe mode, and a clean re-intall of of OS X 10.6, none of which resolved the issue. I can recreate this freeze after sleep issue 100% of the time if I let the computer go to sleep via the Power Saver and wait several minutes, regardless of whether I am on battery or power adapter, safe boot mode, how many applications I have open, or what peripherals are attached.
