My macbook pro is just over 3 years old now and off and on during this time the screen will just go all black.  Lately this blackout is lasting longer and I was wondering what is causing this.  I am afraid that this will not come back on in the future.

My MacBook pro is just over 3 years old now and the screen has totally blacked out for a few seconds at a time.  It will come back on in a few seconds with the exception this past month it has stayed black for a longer period of time like one minute.  It scares me to think that one of these times it won't come back on.  I have noticed it happens more often when I am using just the battery power.  Does anyone have any idea what causes this?  just to mention my battery was not low when this happens.

jmckl,
if your MacBook Pro is a 15-inch Mid 2010 model (“MacBookPro6,2”), then it might be exhibiting the defect that is documented on this Apple Support page. If your black screen is due to this defect, then that page states that Apple will service this problem on this specific model of MacBook Pro gratis, for three years from the date of purchase. However, some commenters here have noted that sometimes the servicing is done gratis without having proof of the date of purchase. If you have an Apple Store near you, you might consider bringing your MacBook Pro there to have them check for the presence of this defect.
It is only the 15-inch Mid 2010 model that has this problem; no other model suffers from it.

I appreciate the prompt response.  Having read several threads, you can appreciate why I would be hesistant to upgrade to the Lion.  All I basically use is Office for Mac and the other basic functions such as email/calendar/address/contacts...etc. I have read horror stories about peoples stuff dissapearing into cyberspace and obvi dont want that to happen.
That's all nonsense. Most people don't post anything if they don't have any problems. People who do have problems usually have very specific reasons for them that they have caused themselves.

  • Is it possible to mirror the display on the Macbook pro which is two years old to my iMac which is four years old? Macbook pro is running OS X Lion 10.7.5 and the iMac is running OS X 10.6.8 (10K549). Neither of them have Thunderbolt ports.

OK, well I would go with what Apple says in writing but if you want to take a trip to visit the Genius Bar that won't hurt.
Good luck, I'm 99% certain  you will find I was correct but please let us know.

My iPhone 5 screen is black and will not come back on. The phone still works when paired with my vehicles Bluetooth what's wrong with it, and can I fix it?

I have a similar problem.  I restored my iPhone 5 to the latest available OS.  After completing the process the phone never restarted.  The phone was fully charged when I restored it but now refuses to charge past the red battery icon.  I have been able to get the phone in UFD mode several times and have been able to load the new OS on the phone.  The Apple logo does come on and the software fully loads.  iTunes tells me the phone will restart but never does.  I left it to charge all night but it never appeared to load the battery.  This morning I went to the Grand Central Terminal apple store for help.  A woman at the store plugged the phone in but it never charged.  She absolutely refused to believe that I got my phone in UFD mode and loaded any software on.  I don't think it is a battery issue.  The only solution I was given was to buy a new phone.  Repairing it was out of the question.  At this point the phone is completely useless.  Thanks in advance for the help.

  • How do I fix a black screen on a MacBook Pro (less than a year old)?

My daughter was working on her MacBook Pro and the screen went blank.  She has rebooted and tried holding Shift key when rebooting and also Command V.  Neither did anything.  The keyboard is responsive and the computer is sounding/acting like normal except she can't see anything.  She does not have a way to hook up to TV to see if it is the screen.
Any suggestions?  She is as college without a car and not sure when she can get to Apple store and laptop is required for school.

If the screen is black throughout the boot process, meaning no gray screen, no Apple logo, etc., it's likely a hardware problem. If she can't get to an Apple store, she can call and Apple will send a box for her to send it in to them. Of course, that lengthens the time it's out of her hands.

  • I have a Macbook Pro less than a year old running slow

I have a macbook pro that is less than a year old and it's running pretty slow.  This is the first Mac I've ever had and always heard they are great and never get viruses.  The software versions in OS X 10.8.1.
Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

A mini DisplayPort display or adapter won't work plugged directly into the Thunderbolt port on the back of a Thunderbolt display, but will work if a Thunderbolt disk drive (with two Thunderbolt ports) is connected between the Thunderbolt display and Mini DisplayPort device.

  • My Macbook Pro is about 5 years old.  Is it worth upgrading to the new OS?

I have a Macbook Pro that is sort of old.  I haven't used it in more than a year because I had a laptop through work.  I recently lost my job and dusted off my macbook to use.  I will need to update to Snow Leopard in order to update to the current system.  Is it worth doing it on this laptop

If you upgrade beyond 10.6, you will not be able to use some, if not all, of your apps.
Therefore before you go beyond Snow Leopard look carefully at the apps you have that you will use. Upgrading apps is not inexpensive. This site offers a comprehensive compatibility table:

  • Why does my macbook pro, less than a year old, not show airplay

My new apple tv does not work with my new macbook pro.  No silly box/triangle icon shows up on the operating system.  I cannot use airplay.  No help anywhere.  No documentation.  No diagnostics.  Just fail. Fail. FAIL.  Now my Apple TV will not upgrade...it tries and FAILS.

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). It also requires the computer to be using wi-fi.

    Hi:
Unfortunately there is no way to upgrade the graphics in your notebook.
There are no removable and replaceable graphics cards.
The graphics processing units are soldered and integrated onto the motherboard, and cannot be upgraded or replaced.
Your notebook had the best graphics configuration offered by HP at the time, so there isn't even a better supported motherboard you can replace yours with.

recently bought new macbook pro , transferred data over and thought microsoft office would work on new laptop. Icons are there , although requires key codes and I don't have my key codes anymore as dog chewed the packaging!! should i just buy new software package ?  I am told that this is a microsoft issue not a mac issue !! But all my other data on the old macbook pro transferred over even the icons for office for mac on the bottom app bar. only now I can't open any of my word or excel files without key code! I thought that there may have been something that could be done before having to bite the bullet and fork out for new software package.??

If this is Office for Mac 2011 then it will work on your new computer. Reinstall it. If you don't have the key code call Microsoft's activation line to get a new key code. Explain that you lost the original key code and want to install Office on your new computer.

    Jo

I had a MacBook which cracked several times over the three years I had it.  Each time it was repaired under warranty without quibble.
I had to use Windows XP quite a lot, and though I can't be certain I think that the excessive heat generated by XP was partly to blame for the repeated cracking.  There's no doubt that OS X is "cool" in every sense of the word!

  • I have an Apple MacBook Pro and when surfing the web my computer will slow to a crawl and I will have a multi-colored spinning wheel visible until my latest request is handled.  What is causing this and is there a way to prevent this from occuring

I have a MacBook Pro.  When surfing the web it will eventually slow to a crawl.  When this occurs, there will be a small multi-colored wheel spinning until my latest command is handled.  What is causing this and is there a way that I can modify or prevent this from happening?  Is there a setting that will prevent this?

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List

Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

I use Time Machine to back up my entire computer with my external hard drive. I am getting a brand new iMac this month and was wondering what is the process of using this back up to restore my new computer exactly how my old computer was? I want to make sure I will still have various important files on my new computer, like my songs in iTunes, my photos in iPhoto, etc, etc. Thanks so much in advance!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you turn on the new iMac for the first time, Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so connect the external disk and follow steps to restore all your files to your new iMac. Your new Mac will have the same settings and programs as your old computer.
In other cases, I would recommend to restore the whole backup without using Migration Assistant or Setup Assistant, but a Late 2012 iMac uses a special OS X build, so the OS X version that you're using on your old Mac won't work on the new one. Hi I have the old photo shop elements 10 on my computer and want to update and was wondering what the differences between photoshop, lightroom and photoshop elements are?
Also when I upgrade does it have to be with a monthly membership or can I just purchase the product out right like you use to be able?

You cannot "update" from what you have to any of the applications you mention. It will have to be a straight purchase or subscription at full price.
Photoshop is a professional level application that makes no apologies for its very long and steep learning curve.
Lightroom is all about volume, and very light editing.
The Photoshop Elements forum is at:

Remember, you are not addressing Adobe here in the user forums.  You are requesting help from volunteers users just like you who give their time free of charge. No one has any obligation to answer your questions.
I do not know where there is such a comparison table as you seek, but someone else might, or you can google.
