My Macbook Pro is running really slow - anyone got any ideas?

FWIW: I just looked over a friend's daughter's 2010 MacBook Pro unibody (2.66ghz) that was slow as molasses in Winter. She has been using it for her work at U.C. Berkeley for three months. After running Mac Janitor I repaired permissions with Disk Utility and there were thousands of files that needed to be re-set. After that it ran the way it should.
I was pretty surprised because when I repair permissions on my Mac Pro tower practically nothing gets changed.

Regarding iPhoto '11 9.5 (902.7 build running on an older Intel based MacBook Pro with iPhoto libraries on a USB2 External HD).  I am dealing with iPhoto taking too long to download photos.  Specifically, I rechecked and repaired HD permissions. I am running the most current software my five year old Intel MacBook Pro can run.   What happens is that when I connect an external SD card, or my iPhone, the new version of iPhoto takes up to two full minutes to fully acknowledge the device. Then locate new photos and be ready to download them to my external HD.  I am kind of concerned about this.  This has never happened before.
I take 20,000 photos a year.  I really don't want to lose any.  Or is there something I am doing wrong?  Or need to be aware of?  Any experienced suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.  Have a great day.
PS.... The cameras I use are Canon SX-30, Nikon D3100, and my iPhone 4S.  Thanks again for your assistance.

Hello Old Toad.... Those sound like great ideas.
I thought I checked and repaired disk permissions on my main boot HD.  That boot disk is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  Capacity 749.3 GB.  Available 562.53 GB.   BUT.... now that I think of it.... the Seagate external HD with USB2 interface is: Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Capacity 639.79 GB, Available 36.2 GB with my latest iPhoto Library 517.37 GB that was already scanned & updated to be read by the latest iPhoto version.
I'll try your suggestions tonight as far as double checking 'permissions' and setting up a tiny test library.
Or maybe it's time to fill up another External HD?
I appreciate your and anyone else's suggestions to try.
Have a great day. ~~ David in Rochester NY

10.7.4 is the latest update of MacOS X Lion. Run Software Update in System Preferences.
Since you state to run 10.7.2, Software Update will have to use the combo updater to bring it up to 10.7.4. This will entail a large download that will take some time so have patience. I suggest the following steps:
Restart the Mac, press and hold Command-R to start up in Recovery Mode (More info: http://www.apple.com/macosx/recovery/ ).
If needed, select the desired language to move to the next screen (only if it is the first time in Recovery Mode).
Select Disk Utility in the bottom of the list, Continue...
Choose the hard disk drive device on the list ( xxx.xx GB APPLE HDD ...) by clicking on it.
Click on Repair Disk button, wait for it to finish.
Choose the Lion boot volume, Macintosh HD, by clicking on it.
Click the Repair Disk button, wait for it to finish. If any errors are found and the process does not end with a "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK." message, click on Repair Disk again.
Click on the Repair Disk Permissions button. This will take awhile to finish.
Quit Disk Utilities, choose Restart from the menu.
Now run Software Update in System Preferences, choose to apply all missing updates. This will take quite awhile, depending on how fast your Internet connection is. The Mac will need to be restarted when the updating is done.
Run Software Update again to have Safari updated to the latest version. This is necessary since Safari 5.1.7 needs OS X 10.7.4 to be running already.

...Is there any way I can install a partition that runs snow leopard on my early 2011 MB pro with what I have (new SSD, New RAM, Current version Lion running, no external drive, lack of original snow leopard disks [I lost them ] and the general 10.6.3 snow leopard boot disks)...
As the last post suggests, call Apple and order a replacement original disc for about $17.  They will ask you the model and serial numbers.
Your retail version of Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 will not work on that Mac as it requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.7 to boot and operate.
Another alternative is to again borrow another Mac to install your retail Snow Leopard into an external HD or partition, upgrade it to 10.6.8 and then clone it back to a partition on your MBP.

    Hi,
    Have you tried
    1.leaving the screen flipped open,
    2.connecting power
    3. connecting external monitor; waiting for it to 'wake up';
then 4. closing lid of MBP to activate clamshell mode?

  • Brand new Macbook Pro slower than my 2006 Macbook

I bought a new Macbook Pro last month and upgraded the RAM to 4 GB and the hard drive to 500 GB. My previous Mac was a mid-2006 Macbook with 2 GB RAM.
I was expecting it to be noticeably faster than my 2006 Macbook (which is still running Tiger/10.4), but it isn't. Two things are particularly noticeable.
    1) Startup time. The 2006 Macbook is 5 or 10 seconds faster starting up.
    2) Safari. Safari is a couple of seconds faster loading identical websites on the 2006 Macbook. I tried updating Safari on the Macbook Pro to the new Safari 4 beta, and that is slightly faster, but still noticeably slower than on my Macbook.
I've tried running the set of Applescripts called "Maintenance" (available on the web) to do all regular maintenance tasks.
I've run software update. Everything is up to date.
Any suggestions of other things I should be checking to try to improve the speed of my Macbook Pro are much appreciated.
I find it really mystifying that performance is so noticeably worse on a brand new, much more powerful machine.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the replies.
In re the OS, I personally don't see many significant improvements in OS 10.5. Sure, little things here and there, but major power improvements over 10.4 that should cause startup time to be slower? I don't see it. I'm surprised in the design phase Apple's software engineers would allow longer startup time (always one of their biggest selling point over the Windows world) in return for such things as being able to hit the space bar in the finder to open a document quickly. I'm not using Time Machine, for instance, so that shouldn't be slowing down startup... or at least actually loading it in functioning mode shouldn't be slowing things down.
In re Safari, I'm doing as scientific a test as I possibly can here at home. Both computers sitting right next to each other, connected to the same network wirelessly, clicking on the same web link at exactly the same time. My 2006 Macbook is consistently faster at loading the page. Even more, it is significantly faster at loading the page to a "usable" point. For instance, if I click on the main page of the New York Times, the 2006 Macbook will load faster and will let me scroll down much earlier in the load process. On the 2009 MBP, the page shows up a few seconds slower, and it takes another few seconds more before the spinning beach ball stops and I can scroll down on the page. This is true both with Safari 3 and 4 on the MBP.
I just find it weird that a much more powerful computer, with a "new, improved" operating system and twice the amount of RAM, is noticeably more sluggish on these really basic tasks.
My next step is to go to the Apple store and try to compare mine to some other MBPs...
I have issues with some developments at Apple recently. For instance, the gen 2 iPod shuffle strikes me as a perfect design. Does it need to be smaller? Moving the controls to the headset seems really weird to me, much less convenient than the old one. I know that comment is OT, I just am starting to wonder about some decisions at Apple.
Not enough to make me complain seriously... I still vastly prefer Apple to the other options. But that sense I had for years that somebody really smart is paying attention to all these details and getting them right... that's starting to fade away for me. On the other hand, I do not have an iPhone and I think it's clear a lot of Apple's resources are going into the iPhone these days.

  • Trouble playing any videos on Macbook Pro

So 2 months back, my macbook pro is having trouble playing any type of flash videos, from youtube, embedded videos, pretty anything with flash. flash player is up to date, i can surf the internet and do my work flawlessly but as soon as i start a video, the mbp starts to slow down and the video starts getting choppy. Not sure what else to do before giving up and going to the apple store. I've shut it down and restarted it still having issues. any help would be appreciated! Running OS X 10.8.2

I have been having these same problems. Currently, playing YouTube videos in HD, is not viewable, so I have to watch videos in 240p (gross). My thought is that YouTube has shut down some of the servers in order to push some kind of update. My advice, just wait out the storm and see what happens over the next few days. If the issue is still not fixed, I would suggest contacting Google. In the meantime, you could try and reinstall Flash Player, or change browsers, but from my experience, none of that worked.
    Best of luck!

  • ITunes downloads fast on old Mac mini but slow on brand new Macbook Pro on the same WiFi network?

    Hi all,
I have an old Mac mini that's from around 2008 and runs on Snow Leopard. I also have a brand new Macbook Pro with retina display that's running Mountain Lion. Both running iTunes 10.6.3.
I never noticed anything wrong with my MBP's connection speed until last night when I downloaded a free TV episode from iTunes. The download speed varied between 20KB/s and 40KB/s and it took me 7 to 8 hours to download a single episode. I checked my internet connection but there was nothing wrong with it, SpeedTest.net told me I had a download speed of 94MB/s and upload speed of 80MB/s, it was only iTunes that was unbearably slow.
Today I was browsing iTunes again and was planning to buy some movies, but again it took forever for the trailers to download. So I fired up my Mac mini just to see if it would be just as slow. Turned out my Mac mini could download the same trailers from iTunes at a much higher speed than my MBP (around 3MB/s on the ones I tested).
So what gives? They are on the same Wifi network provided by an Airport Extreme, and although my iPhone and iPad are also connected to it, no one else is doing any heavy duty downloading.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Is the new macbook air any good for logic pro?

hi. i currently have a heavy 15" macbook pro with i7 dual core 2.66GHz processors.
i travel a lot and am really thinking about getting a macbook air.
i want to know if any logic users are on the new 13" macbook air and how they find it.
can it run large sessions ok?
do you miss the firewire port or a larger screen?
does it get super hot after heavy use and does this drain the battery?
thanks for chipping in... appreciate it!

You should really be fine with battery life, but the Air does get quite hot under stress. It will also have a lot less power than your i7 MBP so it really depends on how much CPU your typical projects use, expect just over half of your current CPU use to max out your air. On the other front, having an SSD means you will get pretty awesome streaming from your HDD, meaning that you probably won't ever be able to load too many audio tracks.
The only counter I see to that is that you'll be pretty short on HDD space if you plan to keep your Mac portable. (IE no external HDD) and no FireWire is an instant No-Buy for all us FireWire interface based producers. Of course you have your bigger MacBook to pass things onto. All in all it's a great buy for a sketch pad type machine to get ideas down on the go, but understand that for a few reasons (FireWire, processing power, uselessness for me on a desktop due to small screen and keys) I would always plan to pass the song up to your MBP when I get home as its a superior machine in everything but size.
    Hope that's been helpful.

  • I want to buy a new Macbook pro 15", but I don't like Lion, I want Leopard installed, is there any issues with drivers or any other I should be aware of?

I want to buy a new Macbook pro 15", but I don't like Lion, I want Leopard installed, is there any issues with drivers or any other I should be aware of?

Hello, I've tried Lion from the day they released to last week I got my computer formated and with leopard again, on my iMac 24" from early 2009 2.9 Ghz core 2 duo, and I have installed 8 Gb of memory, and i have some complains about it, there are some cosmetic issues but mostly I'm concerned about issues bellow the hood, as I'm a stock trader and I depend completly from my computer's performance, let me explain:
    Superficial issues:
    1. They took off "spaces" and I liked it.
    2. I dont use the magic mouse, I need a more accurate mouse for my charts, and it seems they built the entire OS assuming you would use the magic mouse for gestures, scroll, etc to try to mimic in some way the Ipad and Iphone functions, but what if you arent using it like me?
    3. I never used that little rocket icon that makes all your apps appear and that could be one of the "improvements on Lion", at first sight it looks nice and slick, but if you try to use it and make it part of your daily use, you would find it is useless, it is a pain to try to arrange it the way you like it, so I rather use the spotlight to search for my apps, its faster.
    Now the MOST important, 'performance':
    1. It completly suffocate my computers hardware Leopard much more lighter, beggining from the start up that taked almost 1/3 or twice the time, and I think Lion has some bugs bellow the hood, i was doing my normal stuff, some apps running and everything, and suddenly I started to feel the computer a little slow, safari taking forever to open the pages for example, and I opened the activity monitor to see what was going on, and it was there, I was using 4 or 5 gb from my memory, and CPU making insane peaks, and Im using 2.46 gb as im writing it doing exactly the same stuff, (but Im happily using Leopard now), and it wasnt once, as i told before, I used lion since the day they released it and happened several times until it drove me nutts. But leopard not problem in that regard at all, Never.
hope this helps, and hope some apple guys read that because lion resulted in a big disappointment for me.

  • Sudden slow-down of my MacBook Pro

I have experienced a recent significant slowdown on my MacBook Pro.  Since it occurred soon after I finally got around to loading Yosemite, I was concerned that the new OS was a bit too much for the 5yr old laptop.  I found an older (long!) thread that recommended etrecheck and post the results in a new discussion.  I know there are some things I need to clean up too.
    Problem description:
Sudden and significant unexplained slow-down of my MacBook Pro.  I get a lot of spinning pinwheels just opening and closing applications.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
Update OS X. Version 10.10.3 is the current release. To learn how to update OS X read Update OS X and App Store apps on your Mac - Apple Support.
Remove the following garbage from your Mac.
    "MacKeeper"
    "Sophos"
    "Symantec / Norton"
    "Trusteer Rapport"
Your Mac cannot operate properly with those products installed.
One or more of the following support documents may be applicable:

Verify their complete and permanent eradication from your Mac. Don't use any other techniques to get rid of them.
"Carbonate" is known to run poorly on Macs.
    "App4Mac" is outdated and obsolete.
    Other problems may be present.
You need to become much more circumspect regarding the software you choose to install. I apologize if that comes across as blunt, but you appear to have been exerting quite some effort in an attempt to prevent your Mac from working the way it's supposed to work.

  • Emptying trash isn't freeing up any space on MacBook Pro or external drive. Time Machine is OFF.

Yesterday, while using Final Cut Pro X, I noticed the program/my computer was starting to run slow--and then I was totally caught off guard by a warning that my startup disk was full. I checked Storage and Finder and both my MacBook Pro and external drive had less than 1gb of space each! I usually use Secure Empty Trash and have no problems...but for my drives to be full, it clearly hasn't been working for a few days, possibly weeks.
I'm using a MacBook Pro (early 2011) and a LaCie Thunderbolt external drive. I'm running Mavericks (10.9.2)
I am not using Time Machine. When I look at Storage under About This Mac, my Backups on my MBP and LaCie drive are both at zero KB.
I read through the forums and tried going into Terminal and entering sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash ...but all that did was free up about 10gb on my external drive (I'd emptied upwards of 90gb from my trash).
Right now I'm basically stuck with a slow laptop and very little storage space, which has slowed my work to a halt. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Some space suggestions.

Was this a dark gray screen that appeared with the message to restart the computer in five different languages? If so that's a kernel panic. It would help if you can post the panic log: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic. Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics.

  • Can I run a factory reset on my MacBook Pro and later reinstall my purchased apps, or will I have to pay for them again?

My MacBook Pro is a work computer, and my company may need to run a factory reset on it. I don't have much faith in their abilities to save any of my info, so I am backing all my photos and videos up on an external hard drive, but I am concerned I will lose my purchased apps in the process.
Is there any way I can get those back later if I need to?  There's a lot of purchased apps on my MacBook Pro.
    Thanks!

Like posted above if you purchased them from the Mac App store all you have to do is Login to the MAS with the same Apple ID used to buy them and they will be available for Re-Download and install.
If you purchased some of them from the developers website then the developer might of sent you a registration code in an email. Find those and make a Text Document out of them and then Print that text Doc and save it to that external for safe keeping.
You can then go back to the developer website and re-download their program and install it using that key/reg code to authorize it.

  • Looking for laptop - running Win version of CS3 on Macbook Pro?

I've been wanting to finally get a laptop for a long time now, and my first choice has always been a Macbook Pro. My main computer now is a self-built PC, and I do all my video work within CS3; my production company also runs CS3, so it made sense to mirror it at home. Anyway, my original thinking was to get a Macbook Pro so that I could have the option to edit with Final Cut Pro again, which would be nice because I see so much freelance work/job postings where the client/company is using FCP. Plus, out of all the laptops I've messed around with in the past, Macbooks always seem to work the best/fastest; and I just like them better overall.
However, the idea of getting a laptop that isn't compatible with my current personal/professional workflow doesn't seem like such a good idea now. I have plans to travel to Japan for an extended period of time too, and I want to be able to work remotely, which means having access to a PC machine running CS3. Because of this, I started looking into PC laptops again... but I'm just not impressed with what I see. So I read about the possibility of running Bootcamp on a MBP, thus allowing me to run my PC version of CS3. Theoretically I could then still work on all of my PC formatted projects and then switch back into OS X for "normal laptop computing" (as well as starting new projects with FCP).
Since I have no personal experience doing something like this though, I was wondering if anyone runs a setup like this and if so, how well does CS3/4/5 run via Bootcamp on a Macbook Pro? I've been reading on here how CS5's Mercury engine doesn't/can't work because the hardware won't support it, but does the overall editing experience suck?
Just for reference, currently all my job-related work is simple DV NTSC... so I'm sure any laptop I buy would be able to handle that. However our company is planning to upgrade to HD in the near future, and I personally work with XDCAM EX footage via my Sony EX1r. So I want a laptop that can handle HD projects without choking to death. Also, an Express Card slot would be pretty awesome, too, that way I can dump my SxS cards without having to dock the camera (a 17" MBP would offer this).
Any suggestions/help would be most appreciated, thanks!

    Have a look here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/771180?tstart=0
The final solution found in this thread, including all the specs, is way more attractive than any MBP. It gives no compatibility issues, allows upgrading to CS5 without issues, is fast enough for AVCHD and XDCAM-EX material, is easy to connect to your home PC, avoids possible problems with effects/transitions missing on the MAC, gives you much more bang-for-the-buck than any MBP.
Additionally, it saves you an extra license for PR MAC.
