  • My macbook pro is slowing down!what is the best way to speed it up?what is the best drive cleaner application i can use?

my macbook pro is slowing down!i was looking for drive cleaning applications bau i couldn't decide which one is more useful!

There are NO applications that will make your MBP run faster.  At best they will have no effect, at worst they will create more problems.
Start with this comprehensive trouble shooting document.

Pay particular attention to the Hard Drive and third party applications.
    Ciao.

  • Macbook Pro is slow to sleep after upgrading to Lion

I just updated my Early 2008 15-inch Macbook Pro 2.4 Ghz from 2 GB to 4 GB as well as upgraded my OSX to Lion (10.7.5) from Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  I have noticed since the memory and OSx upgrade my Mac is slow to go to Sleep.  It may take up to 30-40 seconds for it to go Sleep.  Sometimes it will instantly go to Sleep, however most of the time there is a significant delay.  I have not experienced any delay or issues when waking up my Mac from sleep status, but it is very slow to go to Sleep now.  In prior versions of OSx my Mac would always instantly go to sleep.  I've researched some discussion threads and I've found some topics relating to resetting the pmset code.  I was hoping someone a lot more knowledgeable than me can help me troubleshoot this issue.  If it is the pmset, can someone give me detailed instructions on what to review and how to correct?  I see where this was posted from a previous thread but alas I'm at a loss on how to correct...https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages /10.7/man1/pmset.1.html.  Thanks.
    Eric

Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Click the Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About this Mac > More Info > System Report then select Storage on the left under Hardware.
You'll see Available and Capacity. Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.

  • Why is my Macbook pro so slow? And what can I do to fix this?

Greetings, I got my MacBook pro one and a half a year ago. For some reason, the last 4 months the computer has started to slow down. I get issues such as.
         - Beach ball appearing to often, even for simple commands such as open folder. etc.
         - Video files skipping frames. (any video file on any program. Even if its a buffer video such as youtube or Netflix).
         - Programs such as Photshop, Final Cut Pro etc, takes forever to render and work properly.
         - Web Browser taking forever to close a tab.
    I am currently running a OS X V.10.8.5
    2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
    4GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    353.2GB Freespace out of 499.25.
Could any one explain why would a mac slow down? (not a speculation, just why would it slow down like this. Especially the beach ball uninvited appearence).
I looked up the problem on the net, I get way to many differant answears that lead to getting scam programs, and or other 3rd party programs. (I did not download any of them)
I hope some of you understand the problem and have an answear to this. I tried to ask apple support, but they ask for money. I have a feeling that mac slow down forcing you to buy support intentionally (this is just a thought).
I avoid downloading uppdates from apple, because most people I know who uppdate macs always end up with a slow computer. + Last time I tried to uppdate the mac, I got a gray screen that blocked me from using the computer at all. To avoid this problem again, uppdating is not an option.
Pardon my English, it is not my native tounge.
    Thank you for reading.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At or near the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "System Version." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Macbook pro runs slow after sleep mode.

This issue has bothered me for a long time already.
And because of this, I have re-installed the OS many times.
But apparently, re-installing the OS does not help.
The machine will runs slow again after a certain period of time.
    So, here is my problem.
When you do the four finger down swipe, there will be a zooming out effect, right?
(The same function as pressing F3, which let you knows how many applications you have opened)
This zooming out effect is smooth when I first bought my Macbook Pro.
It is smooth too after I re-install the OS.
But now, after a period of time, this effect becomes so choppy and slow.
As I mentioned above, I tried re-installing the OS. It works, but only works for a few days.
And then it becomes choppy again.
The only solution is to reboot my machine.
Can anyone suggest me what to do?
I guess I have to re-install the OS again tonight... LOL

Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk instead of re-installing.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them. Disk Utility's Disk Repair is not perfect and may not find or repair all directory issues. A stronger utility may be required to finish the job.
    After that Repair Permissions.
No need to report Permissions errors....we all get them.

  • Macbook Pro is slow to sleep after upgrading to Lion; pmset -g question

Two months ago I updated from early '08 MBP from Snow Leopard to Lion and increased my memory from 2GB to 4GB.  In doing so, I noticed that my MBP will sometimes take 30 seconds to go to sleep, regardless of what applications are running.  I've put in an Apple Support ticket, and I have done everything from uninstalling and reinstalling Lion, SMS resets, and last erase harddrive and rei-install Lion and then migrate my user and apps back over.  Incidentally I noticed that when I erased hard drive and re-installed Lion prior to migrating my user and apps over my MBP performed normally (as far as instant sleep is concerned).  After I migrated my apps and user profile back over, the slow to sleep issue re-appeared.
I've seen several articles on the forum regarding pmset -g commands and terminal.  However I'm not familiar with the pmset commands and what they actually mean.  I've also seen articles about chaning the pmset -g, but mostly those are related to MBP with retinas running Mountain Lion.  I did come acress an article that suggested I review my pmset -g assertions to see what may be preventing the slow to sleep issue.  I'm posting this below:

My question concerns the Listed by owning process.  It appears my "Address Book Source Sync" may be interfering with my system sleep.  If so, can someone confirm if my assumption is correct?  It should be noted that I have disabled my iCloud and Exchange address book and yet I still get the sporadic slow to sleep.  Can you tell me what the "Address Book Source Sync" means and what this command means, and if this may be interfering with my sleep?
I'm waiting on a call back from an Apple Senior Technician regarding my case.  Up until now, the technician has seemed to disregard looking at my pmset settings.
    Thanks.

  • My 2009 MacBook Pro is slow to sleep - running mavericks - how do I fix?

MacBook now takes 30-45 seconds to sleep and then wakes by itself later on.  Have checked for old printer q's and found none.  Operating wirelessly with new apple router off comcast cable modem.  Used to sleep immediately and stay until awakened.  Any helps?

pennbank is correct that holding the power button will stop the computer.  But it stops *all* processes mid-step, which can leave some of OSX in an incorrect state because of pending internal file updates that were killed.  I do not like to use that method if anything else will make it respond.  For example, once the computer was not responding when I was using a BT trackpad.  I eventually removed the batteries from the trackpad to force it dead, and the release of the BT channel freed the MBP.

  • Macbook pro 2011 slow to sleep after upgrade from SL to Maveriks

    Hi
i have a problem...after upgrade to Mav. (from the app store) my computer need  50+ sec to go to sleep mode. why?
i search for the causes here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776 but nothing.....
i think that the only way is by terminal with "pmset -g log" but i don't understand.

I have noticed this exact same issue last night/today. I upgraded last night as well.
I have been chatting with apple support and have tried Safe boot, SMC reset, PRAM/NVRAM reset, testing on a new user account.
Nothing seems to be fixing it, is it a known OS issue. As having a mechanical HDD with a sleep time of 30 seconds is potentially a problem.
I upgraded from Snow Leopard which had a shutdown/sleep time of a 1-2 seconds. I'm considering going back to Snow Leopard.

Yosemite made my MacBook Pro so slow !! Need help ? what is the solution?

I've ran a benchmark on my Mac (iMac early 2009). Performance of Yosemite in general was about the same as Mavericks. But that can be different on other Mac's of course. Safari is mostly a bit slower. It's recommended you clean your old internet-caches and then restart Safari. (you can use a little app called CCleaner to do that). That might make a difference. Speed-issues are usually solved in the first and second update of OS X.
