Press the Power button for about 10 seconds to shutdown the computer. Wait a couple of minutes then restart. If it restarts OK, then immediately repair the hard drive:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

  • Sound on new macbook pro just stopped working

No idea what happened, but the sound isnt working on my mac.  I've checked to see if I muted it anywhere, but so far I haven't found anything like that.  Any ideas?

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
Go step by step and test.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
    2. Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    3. Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    4. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

Iphoto on my macbook pro has stopped working. It comes up with a message saying that the library is either being used by another user or it is unreadable. Any ideas why I should be receiving this message?
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable"
    Offered solution doesn't work:
Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup.
I have already copied my photographs to the a library manager but when I tried to reuse iphoto and import the photos back into iphoto, it would not let me.
I can't download photographs from my iphone or my digital camera.
Any ideas on how I can solve this problem?
There is a possibility that when I went to update applications that I started to install Mavericks which I then interrupted and cancelled. I am not definite that this caused this problem but it was at about the same time as when this problem started.
    Many thanks,
    Ed

I have already copied my photographs to the a library manager but when I tried to reuse iphoto and import the photos back into iphoto, it would not let me.
You can't "copy" your photos to the "library manager", there is just no way to any such thing.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • My Macbook pro 17" stopped working

my Macbook pro 17" stopped working I was surprised that Apple told me they no longer have support the 17" Macbook pro

That may be discontinued. I can't find a reference anywhere saying if it's still supported or not. The best I can offer is this site where you put in the serial number. It provides all the details on the machine, including whether it's still supported or not. What's wrong with it?

  • Macbook pro speakers stopped working, earbuds fine

My macbook pro speakers stopped working, but the earbuds work fine.  Tried restart and preferences.  Volume icon is grayed out, except when earbuds are plugged in.  What am I missing?

Look in the audio output port.  If there is a red light, the internal switch is stuck.  Insert the earphone jack a few times.  Blow into the port as hard as you can.  Use a toothpick or something similar and jiggle it inside the port.  If no success, bring the MBP to the Apple store genius bar.
    Ciao.
If there is no red light, try a PRAM reset:

Elements 11 on macbook pro has stopped working and i can't re-install as its no longer available?

    Further info:
    Running on a macbook pro.
Purchased through the apple app store.
Worked fine prior to mavricks update.
I have read where others have had this issue, the general response has been that they have had no support from adobe in resolving the problem. One guy said he managed to get issued a new download of the softwear that works fine with mavricks.
so there is a fix avalible but for some reason its not been a general update for all customers with premier elements 11?

My macbook pro wifi stop working suddenly, and know appears a X on the wifi icon, what may have happened?
Its seems to be the harware.

    Hello raphaelitajuba,
The article linked below provides information regarding this indicator and steps that can help restore functionality to your MacBook Pro's Wi-Fi.
AirPort has detected a problem with the driver or a necessary sub-system component, apply the latest manual AirPort software update or reinstall Mac OS X. If reinstalling Mac OS X does not correct the problem, take your computer to an authorized Apple service center.

  • I have a MacBook pro that stopped working - mother board issue?

I have a MacBook pro that stopped working. Was told the mother board is bad. However, it still turns on and makes the normal start-up noises, DVD works and ejects, etc. - only the screen is out. Does this sound like a mother board issue?

It is a 15" MacBook Pro purchased new in October 2007. It has a 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Due processor with 4MB shared level 2 cache, 2GB SDRAM, 120GB hard drive, and a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 128MB of GDDR3 SDRAM.
I read in another thread that there was a problem wiht NVIDIA video cards. Could this be the case with this computer? In the thread, the person indicated that NVIDIA was fixing these issues under warranty.
I was told by the Mac repair tech (not an Apple store) that the new motherboard would by $700 and not under warranty.

  • Macbook Pro wifi stops working, won't turn back on, requires restart to fix?

So for the last two days my Macbook Pro's being doing something very strange. At random times, the wifi will just stop working (as in it thinks I have wifi but no webpages load anymore and my dropbox can't sync) and when I go to turn the wifi off and back on (in an effort to restart the chip thinking it would solve the issue), it won't turn back on. I go into the System Preferences, hit "turn wifi on" and nothing happens. I hit it about 10 times and that does absolutely nothing. I've then tried putting my mac to sleep and waking it back up, which delivers even stranger results; The wifi turns back on, but can't find any networks, both using scan and manually inputting the details of my network. So far the only fix for it is to just restart my Mac and then the wifi works just fine like nothing ever happened (until it happens again, usually a few hours later). I'm currently running OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 on a 15" early 2011 Macbook Pro (MC723LL/A) with 2.2 GHz quad-core i7 and a 1TB Samsung 840 EVO SSD. The most recent modifications I've made are just installing GDB debugger and creating a custom certificate for it to be able to run Eclipse C/C++ IDE on my Mac, but I seriously doubt that would have caused the issue (especially since that was running for a few days before this happened). Has anyone else had a problem like this?

So many people are having this problem. I believe I have solved it. I posted it on another thread, but I will post it here:
First - let me say that I tried trashing the bluetooth preferences and restarting. That worked for about 10 minutes, then I also tried reorder the connections in Network Preferences, that didn't do much either.
Here's what worked: Open System Preference, click on "Energy Saver", uncheck "Wake for network access". This has totally worked for me. I connect flawlessly and immediately to my network and to my printer.
My order of connectivity of network devices is still ordered where Bluetooth is near the last of the devices. But really, try deselecting "Wake for network access"

  • Optical drive on MacBook Pro has stopped working since upgrade to Mavericks

I upgraded to Mac OSX 10.9 almost as soon as it was released, but I only discovered two days ago that any optical disk: CD/movie DVD, DL DVD etc that I insert in to my late 2008 MacBook Pro just spins up for a few seconds, then gets ejected.
I really hope Apple have noticed this issue, because there are many other people reporting the same problem. I will have to consider reverting to Snow Leopard if a fix is not released soon.

    Reset SMC.

  • MacBook Charger just stops working!

Ok, so I am on my 3rd charger the 3rd one is literally 6 months old and it just stops working. All of them have... and when I go to the genius bar nobody can help me, they just suggest a buy a new one. Of course, those are over $80 including tax... and I am sick of spending that. I mean, I do nothing out of the ordinary. My charger is plugged in the power outlet and I dont move it, I dont play with it, I dont abuse it, it dont do anything but charge my laptop.
So can somebody please tell me whey they just start working and where I can buy a charger that will at least last me a couple of years?????? I mean, does apple create these issues purposely so I spent $80 every 6 months??? Not cool!!!

yup that was it.. The bumper has a little plastic piece that stooped the charger from fully seating... So I had to perform surgery on my $29.00 Apple bumper so the accessory that are made for it fit.. Nice...
