My macbook pro keeps running hot, what can i do?

i am not a pc freak and need som eguidance on what to do to prolong the life of my beloved macbook. it gets hot, whirrs oincessantly and slows right down, sadly like i was back on a windows machine! It is almost 3 yearsd old and no doubt has tons of accumulated rubbosh on it (disk at 75%) but at times the memory is almost 100% so dont know what is causing it. happy to add memory or whatever, just need some guidance....

Go to the Bresink website, download, install and then post an image of Temperature Monitor like this:
This is the link:
http://http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
Also post an image of Activity Monitor showing 'All Processes' and '%CPU' displaying values from high to low, such as this:
With this information we may be able to determine if you have a problem.
Ciao.

  • What is application memory and why does my macbook pro keep running out of it?

what is application memory and why does my macbook pro keep running out of it?

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Please note that if the cause is a memory leak, installing more memory will not help. That's likely if you already have more than 4 GB of memory. Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 and later. Some details may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, reset the printing system. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • Please help, my macbook pro is super hot, how can i fix it.

please help, my macbook pro is super hot, how can i fix it.

I am guessing you have just bought a new macbook pro,  I did the same thing when I first unpacked mine.
You will get asked if you are using it on your lap, because they think that you are blocking the vents.
the macbook pro will get really hot around the E R T and F keys and  I O P and L keys and the metal strip between the keyboard and the screen.
I have found the graphics accelerator heats the machine up more than the actualy processor.
you should report it to apple care before your 90 days is up, they may or may not send you to a genius booking.  Just incase you have issues with your machine later due to the heat buildup early on, that way they have a log of the problem.
My macbook pro runs alot cooler than it did when i first got it, but still gets hot on heavy usage
You shouldnt really worry unless it shuts itself down as then you have some serious problems, when it gets hot u should be able to hear the fans running and it will prolly keep the temp aroun 101-104 c under heavy load.   If you can't hear the fans, shut it down and take it back to the store.
    Hope this helps you

I was using Safari , 5 tabs open, when my macbook pro just stopped working .What can i do ??

Press the Power button for about 10 seconds to shutdown the computer. Wait a couple of minutes then restart. If it restarts OK, then immediately repair the hard drive:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

Look into iKlear Polish Cleaning.  Do a Google search for others.  Or call an Apple Store or an AASP & ask for their recommendations as they are "Apple" professionals and should know the best & better products.

  • MacBook Pro Retina - Running Hot

    Hello everyone,
I have had my new MacBook Pro Retina for less than a week now and I am loving it.
I already have a ton of great applications installed, but I have noticed it is running extremely hot.
I have uploaded an image of iStat in the systems current state. The picture is labeled iStat_IntelHD4000 indicating the system is running on the Intel graphics chipset at a very low load. (Only running Chrome.)
The next image attached is a called iStat_nVidia indicating the system is running on the nVidia graphics chipset at a significantly higher load. (Running VMware fusion with a light-weight install of Windows 7 x64.)
As you can see, the system's temperature has increased significantly even when just running a simple virtual machine under no load other than windows system overhead.
I am a fairly experienced IT professional, but I have not had a macintosh computer since a g4 iBook; loved that laptop :-)
Some statistics I could not show on here are from my bootcamp install. I installed Star Wars: The Old Republic yesterday evening, and that's when the red flag really went up.
I have SpeedFan installed on the Windows partition. I fired up SWTOR w/ max graphics and the game runs really smooth. However, the GPU temp hit 90 degrees Celsius before the fans sounded like the laptop was going to lift off the table and rocket into space.
I appreciate anyone else's input as it seems this is starting to become a trending discussion.
    Cheers,
    ChardonsFinest

    Hi Shootist007,
    Good question....
Here is a few screenshots of SpeedFan under Windows 7 x64.
Standard system boot into OS, no other apps running other than background processes and internet explorer.
Still pretty warm and Windows does not use the Intel graphics chipset. I used the standard installer from Bootcamp to install drivers, app support, etc...
You can ignore the threashold indicators in speedfan as I did not configure any of them.

  • 2008 macbook pro fan runs hot

My mac runs really hot, is there something I can update in the OS to help fix this? The monitor is starting to separate from the back (seriously) form the heat. I use my mac a LOT and I have two small kids so it's been bumped around a few times, so who knows if that had something to do with it and I plan to take it to apple to have it looked at (after I back it up this week) but was wondering if there was a fix for it running hot. It almost burns my fingers above the keyboard at the top if I touch it when it is running hot (if I have a lot going, illustrator, photoshop, dreamweaver etc).

I've had the same problem ever since installing Snow Leopard. Random high heat even with no system activity. One thing that seemed to help slightly was to un-check the "Open in 32-bit mode" checkbox in the "Get Info" window of Safari. This seems to avoid using the 32-bit version of Flash.
Another temporary fix that I found elsewhere in the discussions is to shut the MBP down, remove the battery and disconnect the power cord, then press the power button for 5 seconds. Re-install the battery, then boot. This supposedly does a partial reset of the PMU (Power Management Unit.)
I haven't had the problem recently (in the last week or so, knock on wood) after installing several seemingly unrelated updates. I have installed the "ProKit 6.0.1 (SnowLeopard)" update and the "Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3", but NOT the "MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.4" since my MBP doesn't qualify.
My MB Pro runs cool now, except when Time Machine is grinding away. The updates may or may not have fixed the problem. Good luck.

  • Please can someone help,my in built camera on my Macbook Pro is not working what can i do to activate it back.

Please can somone help my in built cameral on my MacBook Pro is not working, the green light does not show again and the camera is not working . what can i do to active it back.
    Semako

Yuu can try to reactivate your iSight camera by opening up iMessage.. navigate to Preferences/Audio Video, and then click on Camera. IT shoudl be grayed-out if you only have one camera hooked up to your machine. If you have an external camera, then disconnect it from your machine.

  • My macbook pro keeps rebooting. What is the problem?

    Hi,
I have a macbook pro that I bought in August 2010.  Performance has been awesome until this past month when I noticed it getting slower.  This past weekend for the first time ever it would freeze and reboot itself.  I took the action to clean up large files, unloaded some apps, etc. all things they say to speed up your mac in the youtube vids.  Cleared up alot of space and it was moving faster for a day.  Then this afternoon it froze again and rebooted, but never successfully rebooted and now is just rebooting constantly.  I cannot even get to the log in screen anymore or turn it off completely....I am going to wait for the battery to die out, but what is the problem?  What can I do to solve this? I downloaded the newest IOS X update this past saturday, thats when I think the rebooting started, but the computer was getting noticeably slower before that.
Thanks for the help, really dont know what I am doing here

Time to see about the PRAM battery.
By the way iOS and OS X are different systems.
iOS is the operating system for iPads, iPhones, and iPod touch.
Mac OS X is the operating system for Mac labelled computers.

  • The track pad on my MacBook Pro is going crazy what can I do?

Yesterday I tried using my Mac book pro when I noticed that my track pad wasn't working it would either move really slow or not at all and then when it does move it goes all crazy and starts moving or clicking things with out me doing anything what can I do two days ago it was working fine and I have tried cleaning the track pad

The same happend to me, you need to call applecare or take it to the genius bar to have the trackpad swapped out. I hope you have applecare becuase the unibody macbooks will need the whole bottom chassis replacing which can be pricey.
Just a quick fix (it will only work for around 30 mins each time) untill you can take it in. Press all four corners of the trackpad down hard (without breaking it) then let go. Your trackpad should work for a short while.

  • My macbook pro keeps acting up what should i do?

"...it was in terrible condition, it had dents all over it the computer is falling apart..."
