My MacBook Pro mic is muffled

Lately, I dicovered that my MacBook Pro mic is muffled. I need to know is this issue related to the hardware component so I should change it or is it a software problem?

What year and model MBP do you have? Just wondering if the mic input hole has been clogged with "something"?
You can also try a NVRAM/PRAM reset and see if that helps:

  • MacBook Pro microphone sounds muffled, what is wrong with it?

The mic on my MacBook Pro has started to sound muffled lately, very bassy and it doesn't pick up much sound, what it wrong with it?
I use GarageBand all the time, because I'm a songwriter and it's what I use to record all of my demos, so this is pretty essential to me... its not like I'm just webcamming with people and my words are muffled... if I don't have garageband it's very hard for me to write music and send demos to my band.
    What should I do?

    See if this can help

  • Macbook Pro mic stopped working

Yes I know there are a ton of threads on this subject. None of them have a solution for my problem. All of them state the obvious. Yes, I have tried everything.
I have been using the iPhone headset as a headset on my macbok for 6 months now. Worked great until the last firmware update when it stopped working.
I can see the input levels in the control panel register sound coming from my mic but I can't hear anything... and no it is not muted. I hear everything else through the headset fine... just not sound from the mic and noone else can hear me in ventrillo, skype, ichat etc etc.
    very frustrated now...

Please tell us what version of Mac OS X you have. The details of trouble shooting depend on that.
Assuming OS 10.8 or 10.9, go to Apple Menu / About This Mac / More Info / System Report. When that pane opens, under hardware in the left, select USB.
When you do that the info on the right side is the USB Device Tree. Look through that info and see if "Built-in iSight" is listed.

  • How to connect a shotgun mic to my Macbook pro?

I recently purchased the "Audio-Technica ATR-6550 Video Camera Condenser Shotgun Microphone"
(http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATR-6550-Condenser-Shotgun-Microphone/dp/B0 02GYPS3M). I need this mic to record audio into Adobe Premiere on my Macbook pro (or on voice memos on my iphone). I'm pretty sure it's a mono mic. However, even with an audio to stereo adapter, none of my apple products recognize that I have connected an external mic. What am I missing? Are their other adapters I should buy (preferably from Amazon)

Hmmm....it should. If it doesn't even show up in System Preferences, no application will see it. Do you have any other devices that you can test the microphone with, for example do you have a video camera you can plug it into and does it work there?

DVD drives read the bottom of the disk, not the top. Smooth out the paper & try again.

  • External Mic on MacBook Pro 13 inch

I've tried doing what is recommended in the troubleshooting section, but I still can't get an external mic to work on my MacBook Pro. When I change the settings to 'Use audio port for sound input' nothing new comes up, it stays on 'Internal Microphone' and 'Built-in input'
It would be great if you can help me sort this!

    Mmm.
Assuming you have the microphone actually plugged in when this occurs there is clearly something up, cjday.
While the comments from others about low level inputs and the like might become relevant later (depending on what sort of microphone you are trying to use), you should still see the option change to "Line In / Built in Input" " if you have selected "Use audio port for sound input" and have clicked the "Input" tab in the upper part of the sound preferences window, and have the mic plugged in. In fact if you have these settings it should change to "Line In" regardless of what you actually have plugged in there - even a pair of headphones or a plain 3.5mm plug with no wires attached!
Does the socket work normally in "output" mode? (ie if you plug in a pair of headphones and deselect 'Use audio port for sound input' can you hear anything through them when playing any audio?)
Assuming the plug on the microphone fits properly in the socket (to activate the sensor indicating that there is something actually in it!) the first thing to try in your case might be a PRAM reset.
Another possible issue could involve it being "stuck" on optical input/output, perhaps? No sign of a reddish light emanating from the port?
    Cheers

  • Microphone Connection to Macbook Pro to Use like a DJ Mic

    Hey guys,
I need some help here. I just got my macbook pro, and i have a Logitech Microphone that I plug into my laptop via USB.
I was wondering if there was anyways that I could use the microphone as a DJ mic, say at a party, or if it could be used for speeches. How would I get the microphone to project, what program do I use?
I don't want to have to record it, and play it every time, so I just want to be able to project my voice.
Thanks guys, please respond ASAP, because I need to be able to use this mic, for the upcoming weekend.

connect audio out to an amp and PA's.
connect your mic to the usb port.
go into your sound prefpane and select your desired input source (usb mic) and output device (line out). it's just that easy as long as your usb mic is compatible with the mac.
and if you need an answer within the constraints of your schedule, try google next time. this forum is about users helping other users, not users requesting help on demand.

  • Your Question:  Karaoke with HDMI & external Mic through a Macbook Pro

    Your Question:
I have a Macbook Pro, with a miniDisplay to HDMI, which I connect to my TV, after setting output sound and mirroring the display, I can show and hear Karaoke streamed from the internet, but I can't get a microphone to work through the system. I have a mic, with a qtr to eigth adapter in mic port - no sound. Tried mic to a USB port, macbook recognises mic, but no sound out to surround system, just the karaoke music - help

I about pulled my hair out trying to figure out how to do this, so today I made a phone call to a professional musician friend. He said that I need a mixer to go between the computer and the tv. A mixer gives multiple input and output options. He said a friend of his that is a DJ uses this one and recommends it to everyone -
      VocoPro DA-1000PRO 3-Channel Karaoke Mixer
I ordered one today along with some Shure SM58 Mics.
Hopefully, it all works out...I'll let you know.

  • Recording with a mic in garageband (macbook pro)

I used to plug a mic into an adapter, then into my old macbook's input jack. However, my new macbook pro doesn't have a spot for the same jack. Will I need a new adapter? If so what kind and where does it plug in?

Under sound settings and input I have it set to "Line in", and under audio in I have it set to "sound input" When I switch it to "sound output" whatever music I'm listening to comes out of the mic, so I know the mic isn't the issue, but still no audio going in.

  • Any way to connect external mic (gaming headset) to macbook pro?

I just made the mistake of buying a gaming headset that has the two audio jacks, input and output. Realizing that Macs dont have the right audio input port now. Before I take them back, is there any way I could get them to work? The sound is fine, but the mic doesn't work obviously. But I do have a pair of wireless Turle Beaches that I use for my Xbox 360, is there anyway I could take some of the connections from that to get this headset to work? Or do I just need to take it back and get a USB headset.

Most MacBook Pros have both audio in and out, so I don't see any reason why you couldn't use the headset you just bought. I haven't seen any 2012 models, but on older models (my 2011, for instance) the audio out is in front and audio in on the rear of the front left-hand side of the computer. If you have these ports, try them to see if your headphone/mic works before returning it.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • MacBook Pro with two different wireless Mighty Mice at two locations

    Hello,
I have a Mighty Mouse at home and one at the office.
I use the same laptop at both locations.
Every time i change locations, I have to go into Bluetooth preferences and manually connect a mouse.
This seems not very Apple-like so I am wondering if there is a way to have these be automatically connected.
    Bluetooth is set to Discoverable.
In the prefs for both mice, it states Paired: Yes, Connected: No with a red light graphic.
If anyone has any advice, I would appreciate it.

You should also ask this in the MacBook Pro forum. This is the forum for the white and black plastic MacBooks that were discontinued in 2010. You should also post this question there to increase your chances of getting an answer.

  • Warbled sound using the built in mic on a Macbook Pro

    Hello all,
I just got Logic 8 and I'm still in the testing/experiment stages. Right now I'm simply recording my voice, through the *built in mic*, on my Macbook Pro. I'm recording at 192k, 24 bit to test out the sample rate differences and quality of sound. In my audio settings, on my macbook pro, I noticed that it only goes up to 96k. I'm getting audio overload messages, in Logic, and it sounds to me there is a slight "warbled" sound in the recording. Very much like the way a cheap mp3 sounds, underwatery/warbled/cheap. It's subtle but I can detect it.
Is this because the I'm using the internal mic?
Do I need to match my audio settings, on my computer, to Logic's sample rate settings?
Is that why I'm getting audio overload warnings and the distortion?
    Any input will help.
    Thanx in advance
    TTW

The built in mic in your MBP probably costs a dime. It's completely useless for recording except maybe as a quick sketchpad for remembering a melody. They put it in for Skype/iChat purposes, not for professional recording. A more or less decent microphone is at least $100, plus you'll need a proper interface with a mike preamp to connect it to your Mac. Even then, the chances that you'll hear a discernable difference between 44.1 kHz/96/192 are slight.

  • Using EarPods Mic with MacBook Pro 17" (2012) - not working

    hello,
FYI: computer is the early 2012 MacBook Pro - last of the 17" models. it has the 2 separate jacks... one for audio/mic IN and one for headphone OUT. not combined like in the smaller models.
FYI: using a brand new (early 2013) pair of EarPods that came with a new iPhone 5.
i love using the earpods plugged in to the headphone jack to listen to music whilst working. and i also use it to "listen" when doing video conferencing via Skype, iChat/Messages, & Hangout.
but when i'm in a noisier environment (cafe), it would be nice for the other people i'm talking to to hear be better than what the built-in mic can provide. people tell me they hear me great using the earpods when talking thru my iPhone in the same locations.
so, i thought, okay, i'll just get a Y-splitter/adapter... female input to 2 male outputs. recognizing that the earpods have 3 rings on the mini-jack (2 for stereo headphones & 1 for mic, i presume), i made sure the adapter male ends had at least 2 rings on them. found one at Radio Shack.
but it does not work! :-(
discovered audio output comes thru fine, but the computer doesn't recognize the mic input.
i've gone to System Preferences > Sound > Input...
and changed the selection from "Internal Microphone - Built-in" to "Line In - Audio line-in port" but the level meter just goes dead.
i've done some reading about the MBP only allowing "line level in" vs "mic level in" but i don't know what that means.
can this work? if not, why?
am i just missing some setting somewhere? if so, what?
do i need some different kind of adapter? if so, please point me to one.
    THANKS!!!

Good that it was a simple solution. I've had some of the mice lose the BT association  and you have to clear out the configs and re-pair the two.
