My MacBook Pro (mid-2009 5,5) ram accepts 1333GHz when it normally runs 1067GHz ram. Is that normal?
I currently have two 4GB rams in it. When I put one 4GB and one 1GB it says "1067GHz".
When both 4GB are in is says "1333GHz"
"Your Mac contains 2 memory slots, each of which accepts
a 1333 MHz DDR3 memory module."
Is that...normal?
If anyone can help that will be great! Thank you!
Thanks for the quick responce! That's what I assumed, I was just confused because it said it "accepted" it and it is super, super fast. But I'll go back to 1067GHz to play it safe

Apple usually doesn’t sell RAM for older Macs. You’re probably better off buying it from a source such as OWC or Crucial and installing it yourself.

your 13-inch Mid 2009 MacBook Pro requires 1066 MHz RAM, but you have 1333 MHz RAM installed. Try replacing the 1333 MHz RAM with 1066 MHz RAM — Macs can be picky about the RAM which they find acceptable. -
Negotiated Link Speed on MacBook Pro mid-2009 with Kingston SSDNow v300
Hi,
I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro (13") with Kingston SSDNow v300 SSD drive with Mavericks OS X installed.
I've noticed from different forums that many users have the same problem that I have: SSD drive's Negotiated Link Speed is only 1,5 Gbps, although MacBook Pro mid-2009 should support 3 Gbps speed.
My system has EFI 1.7 firmware update (MBP55.00AC.B03) installed in and System Info says that 3 Gbps Link Speed should be possible:
NVidia MCP79 AHCI:
Vendor: NVidia
Product: MCP79 AHCI
Link Speed: 3 Gigabit
Negotiated Link Speed: 1.5 Gigabit
Physical Interconnect: SATA
Description: AHCI Version 1.20 Supported
Many users have tried to reset NVRAM and SMC and I have also done these steps, but with not any improvement.
Some users have mentioned that MacBook Pro mid-2009 has a poor SATA ACHI chipset (NVidia MCP79) and SATA III SSD drives won't work on SATA II speed unless SSD drive is forced to work on SATA II speed by firmware update or by some tweaking tool. Is there this kind of tool available for Kingston SSDNow v300?
One user says that he got 3 Gbps Negotiated Link Speed on Mountain Lion, but after installing Mavericks, speed dropped to 1,5 Gbps (https://discussions.apple.com/message/23549859#23549859).
So, is there any way to get Negotiated Link Speed to work on 3 Gbps on Kingston SSDNow v300 with MacBook Pro mid-2009 (for example by installing an older version of Mac OS X) or do I have to buy a new SSD drive from another manufacturer to get 3 Gbps Negotiated Link Speed to work on my machine?
If the last option (to buy a new SSD drive) is the only option, would it be wise to look for an older model, a SATA II drive, (maybe OCZ Vertex 2) to get 3 Gbps speed?
Thanks!Hi
I was just as frustated as you after installing the Kingston v300. I mean it's a solidly built drive with the reliability of kingston (I've been using their RAM for years and years in my desktop PC without problems). Unfortunately, for a the last 3 months I had it in my 2009 unibody white macbook, it was stuck at link speed 1.5.
I've been searching in forums since then without any solution. Even the update for bios is not available for my model.
I just tried the SMC reset after reading the blog.
http://thenextweb.com/lifehacks/2010/12/04/how-when-why-to-reset-the-pram-smc-on -your-mac/#!w3XEY
On reboot, everything seemed faster, so I checked the negotiated link speed and it was at 3 instead of 1.5! Yay! Then I checked the disk transfer speed on Blackmagic Disk speed test and it roughly doubled from 138 to 260MB/s. Now, I'm not going to shutdown or restart...
I hope this post is useful for people like me stuck at 1.5 Gbps speed. Good luck -

Dec 14, 2014, 07:21:27 PM Self test - passedPlease describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor.
The many "failed" warnings that etrecheck sometimes spews mean nothing. Those warnings are not a reason to reinstall the OS, or to do anything else at all. They should be ignored.
The better your description of the problem, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup. -
Macbook pro mid 2009 - beach ball spinning after one hour
Hi,
I have a problem with my macbook pro mid 2009. After one hour of working the beach ball starts spinning and you cannot work anylonger.
You have to force shut down the macbook pro and restart it. The same problem appears once I wanna do a back-up on my time capsule, but then I receive at least a report after restart:

Can somebody help me, what's wrong with my macbook? I already changed the ram, but it didn't help...
Best regards,
SebastianHi,
I just found the problem. I just have to update the firmware of my SSD:
Crucial M4 and RealSSD C400 SSDs 5184 hours power-on time BSOD issue
Crucial M4 and RealSSD C400 SSDs with firmware earlier than 70H / 07M could become unresponsive after 5184 hours of Power-on time. The drive will recover after a power cycle, however, this failure will repeat once per hour after reaching this point. Update firmware to version 70H / 07M or later.
My SSD has now 5690hours... -
Help on installing Snow Leopard on Macbook pro mid 2009
I have macbook pro mid 2009 with 10.5.8 upgrade as latest. I am planning to install snow leopard on it. However before i do that i will upgrade the hard disk to 500gb and ram to 8 gb. As i never done reinstalling os on mac My question is
Should i install the original os first (which is leopard) and then upgrade it to snow leopard and backup my files from time machine ?
or
Can i just install snow leopard and back up my files from time machine?
Thanks for your answers in advanceI would upgrade your system to Snow Leopard first, then backup the entire system to Time Machine. Then upgrade your hard drive install Mac OS X 10.6 then on the set up screen (Do You Already Own a Mac?" click the button that states "from a Time Machine backup".

How to improve macbook pro mid 2009
i got Macbook pro mid 2009 with processor speed 2.26GH and memory 2GB and storage of 159GB. running maverick 10.9.4
Its slow and battery do not last more than hour.
Any suggestions?
is it worth upgrading it or buy new one. That model has a max possible RAM fo 8GB (two 4GB modules). As long as you are not doing anything heavy-duty, 4GB (two 2GB modules) is probably OK for Mavericks. I have on MBP running Mav on 4GB with no indications it is struggling for more RAM.
Only buy RAM from a trusted Mac RAM reseller. I use Other World Computing (their RAM listings for your model are here):
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3
Crucial.com is also good. Avoid Kingston ValuRAM. It has never been happy in Intel Macs. You will get the right RAM from either vendor. Can't say that for brick-n-mortar electronics stores. Too hard to find one with a resident geek who speaks Mac.
Installation is an easy do-it-yourself task; all you need is the right screwdriver. Handy video here:
http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_13_unibody/
As for the battery, there is a built-in utility that will show the current condition. Click and hold on your Apple menu. Hold down the OPTION key and the first item with change to System Information. Launch it. When it comes up. find "Power" in the left-hand contents pane and select it to get a battery report. Looks like this:
Copy the information I've outlined in red and paste it into a response to your thread here. Those numbers describe the current condition of the battery. -
Aperture 3.5 and Mavericks on MacBook Pro mid 2009
I feel a bit unsecure whether or not to upgrade to Mavericks as long as there are reports about problems with Aperture on older machines in version 3.5. I currently run Aperture 3.4.5 on my MacBook Pro mid 2009 with 8 GB RAM with OS 10.7.5.
From the discussion I have understood that I have to upgrade to Aperture 3.5 when I upgrade to Mavericks.
Is it safe to upgrade, or is it better to wait.Frank Caggiano wrote:
Yep as with any new release there are people reporting problems. Some are legitimate some are the normal noise every new release seems to draw out.
And again I will state that for the majority of users 3.5 and Maverick is working fine. To state as you did that this is another low point for Aperture (when were the other low points in your opinion?) is really not much help.
The last low point was Aperture 3.0. It created chaos. You must must have been around then and saw it. Introducing faces and switching it on by default killing performance which combined with the memory leaks then crashed Aperture corrupting the libraries etc.
It needed 3 0.x updates in 2 months to get it functional (and then with work-arounds). Here's the first couple of lines from the updates:
"Aperture 3.0.1 update improves overall stability and addresses a number of issues in Aperture 3, including: upgrading libraries from earlier versions of Aperture, importing libraries from iPhoto, importing photos directly from a camera, memory usage when processing heavily-retouched photos, face recognition processing,"
"Aperture 3.0.2 update improves overall stability and fixes issues in a number of areas. The key areas addressed include: upgrading Aperture 1.x and 2.x libraries, importing libraries from iPhoto or from earlier versions of Aperture"
"Aperture 3.0.3 update improves overall stability and fixes issues in a number of areas. etc"
It wasn't until October that we finally got:
"Aperture 3.1 update greatly improves the overall stability and performance while fixing many major issues"
And since then it's been superb again. Until 3.5.
I don't come here to bad-mouth Aperture, I come to help and learn. The OP expressed concerns about the upgrade based on stability issues reported here. Working with Aperture every day, I concur, I'm encountering the issues daily (because they affect areas I use) and to me it's been a step back closer to the 3.0.x days (but not as bad) rather than a step forward.
But I'm just one person. If others report they are not seeing the issues, that will help the OP get a better balance.
But I believe in calling it how I see it and despite being a huge Apertue fan, the 3.5 issues have dissapointed me. It seemed to be a simple maintenance update, but has only created issues for me, not added or solved anything I need. I only upgraded because it seemed sensible to install the 'Mavericks' version after installing Mavericks. But if I could go back to 3.4.5 I would. I simply think Apple did a poor job here and see no reason to say otherwise.
But I detect from your post that my post may have antagonised you, so let me apologise for that as it was not my intent. I have a lot of respect for you regulars, and all the help you give people.

How do I reinstall lion using time machine (Macbook Pro mid-2009)?
I am going to replace my hard drive (and add RAM) on my Macbook Pro (mid-2009) myself. I have Lion (10.7.4) currently, and have backed up via time machine on an external drive. I don't have Lion on a usb, and from what I read, Lion Recovery via internet isn't applicable for my macbook (pre 2010). Is the time machine backup a bootable drive? If so, then am I all good so long as my backup is completed prior to replacing the hard drive? If not, how do I create a bootable drive so I can get back to "normal"?
Thanks! :-)To determine if your Time Machine backup has a Recovery HD on it restart the computer. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager appears. A Recovery HD option should appear on your Time Machine backup drive. Select it and click on the arrow button below the icon. If all is well your machine should boot into the Recovery HD utilities screen.
If all is well then after you replace your drive boot from the Time Machine Recovery HD. Start by:
Drive Preparation for Lion
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is an entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After finishing formatting quit DU and return to the main menu. Select the option to Restore from a Time Machine backup then click on the Continue button. -

How do I install windows 7 on a macbook pro mid 2009 using bootcamp and no optical drive?
My optical drive is non-functional and I want to dual boot with win7. The only problem is my macbook does not boot from USB at all, even when I hold th ALT key down when it is starting up.
-I have a flashdrive with win7 on it.
-I mounted the ISO of win7 with toast for bootcamp to do its thing.Good luck.

How to make a MacBook Pro (mid 2009) work properly with a 3M Streaming projector?
Ok, so I have a MacBook Pro (mid 2009), a 3M Streaming projector and very annoying problem.
When I connect my MacBook Pro with a Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter to the 3M projector, I get a pink tint, like a filter over the image, it’s very frustrating.
This are the tests I’ve done:
1. I tried the adaptor and the projector on a different (more recent) Mac -> It worked fine.
2. I tried connecting my MacBook Pro to a different not HDMI but VGA projector -> It worked fine.
3. I used some Terminal code I found on the web to force the Mac to send RGB signal, don’t know if that has anything to do with it, but I tried anyway -> Didn’t work
So I’m confused, it’s not the physical port of my MacBook cause it worked fine with a VGA projector, It’s no the 3M projector and it’s not the Mini Displayport to HDMI adaptor cause it worked fine on a different Mac.
So what is it?
I’m totally desperate, I haven’t been able to solve this problem, so if you guys can help me you will be my heroes.
Thanks.
– 13" MacBook Pro (mid 2009) runing Mavericks.
– 3M Streaming projector Powered by Roku.Yes as Clinton says this is correct.
I've used a Sata to USB connector which is only a few pounds instead of an enclosure for the clone, but then I wasn't keeping mt old HDD. But that's an option if you don't need it.
I also use Carbon copy cloner as this will clone your recovery partition as well. Apples disk utility will also clone drives but I'm not sure that it copy's the recovery partition.
I highly redomend my Samsung 840 pro 256Gb - it's about the fastest drive you'll get (nearly) but is backed by Samsung's unrivaled SSD reliability and 5 year warranty. I've also used an 840 basic model on an older macbook and was equally pleased.
Crucial's drives are reliable mac friendly drives but are somewhat slower on the write speeds vs the 840 Pro.
I'd avoid OCZ drives due to so many failures across their range although they do have great reviews and some models just edge the Pro on speed although it's fairly negligible.
As Clinton says, avoid the Samsung Evo drive. I wanted to buy this drive as it is a great drive - but there are many users that have had compatibility issues with it when installed in a Mac. This may rectified on a future firmware update possibly, but until it's proven I would avoid it for now. -
I have apple macbook pro mid 2009 ... my hard disk stopped working and i had mac os 10.6.8 in it ... i bought a new hard disk drive but i didn't have my CD so i installed my friend's mac os 10.5.8 in the new hard disk ... i want to get my previous 10.6.8 back ... hope there is a way to do so
Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
Snow Leopard General Requirements
1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
2. 1GB of memory
3. 5GB of available disk space
4. DVD drive for installation
5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
fees may apply.
6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
terms apply. -

No audio after Mountain Lion 10.8.3 update Macbook Pro Mid 2009
A few days ago I downloaded some updates for Mountain Lion on my Macbook Pro Mid 2009. After that there is no sound and internal speakers are not listed as an output device. The startup sound is still working (I would guess it uses the same speakers?) but nothing else makes a sound through the speakers. Also headphones are working. I'm not 100% sure if my OS version vas 10.8.2 before the update or not.
I have tried to input the headphones in and out many times to make sure that no microswitches are stuck. Also I have reset SMC and NVRAM/PRAM and reinstalled Mountain Lion. I even installed Lion (10.7.0) to be sure but it still won't work.
Any help would be appreciated.Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
