My macbook pro overheats when running Adium, please help. (Pic included)

When I run Adium, the cpu usage goes over 160% for a while. This causes the computer to overheat, up to 102degrees C. I've redownloaded the latest Adium and reinstall. Still the same problem. Could this be software specific or is there any other causes? How can I troubleshoot this problem?

  • Macbook Pro crashes when running on battery

    Hi.
My Macbook Pro crashes when running in battery. It seems it doesn't happen when connected to the power.
Is there any way to know if it's a battery malfunction?
Because Apple changed the motherboard a month ago or so because Nvidia broke. So it could be also the connector to the battery?
Is there any tests I can run?
    Thanks

I would take it back to Apple and have them check it. You may have got a replacement logic board with a problem. Apple usually use rebuilt ones.

  • My MacBook Pro overheats when connected to Thunderbolt Display

I've had these since August 30 of this year.  I switch to Mac and brough home two Pro's and two Thunderbolts.  They have been doing fine, not a problem yet.  Until Friday, when mine started overheating.  My MacBook Pro Retina runs fine on it's own.  But I came home, plugged it into the Thunderbolt, and immediately it started overheating.  It did the same thing, when I woke up Saturday it was so hot, I could not pick it up with my hands.  I found another thread with similar problems, but it was four pages of "I have this problem, too".  It's not sitting on a desk, it's in the stand sold by Apple, and I"ve had it plugged up to the Thunderbolt 80% of the time since we bought it, but never had a problem until five days ago.  Clamshell mode in a stand with wireless Keyboard and Track Pad, all the newest releases of Pro Retina and Thunderbolt. All the updates, everything.  Any ideas?

Connecting an external monitor/display turns on the high-performance graphics adapter which can generate significant heat.  The base-plate can get pretty hot (Apple states this and for this reason says to not use the MacBook Pro on your lap.  They don't even refer to them as laptops.).  Just make sure that nothing is blocking the cooling ports under the display hinge.  If the MacBook Pro actually overheats, it will shut down.  So, don't worry yet.

  • Am currently running Windows 7 (under VMWare Fusion 5.x) on a Macbook Pro. When running Windows 8 Upgrade ***'t, I get a Secure Boot compatibility notification

The Microsoft Upgrade Assistant identifies several issues related to compatibility of my system with a Windows 8 upgrade which I'm considering on my Macbook Pro (which is runnng OS X 10.8.2).  The message indicates that there is a firmware incompatibility with Microsoft's recently introduced Secure Boot.  Is there a resolution on the Apple side?  If there is not and none can be expected, does this rule out installation of Windows 8 altogether on my system?

Given that what the MUA is seeing is a virtual computer created by the Fusion environment, the problem lies more in VMWare's realm, rather than Apple's. Which would be the case if you were running on BootCamp instead.
Am running Fusion 4 and haven't upgraded (long story), so I have no knowledge if the latest update to Fusion 5 already incorporates the Windows 8 profile when creating, updating or running a VM, so as to satisfy MS's paranoid requirements. So, assuming you are running Fusion 5, maybe checking in VMWare's forums may yield more up to date info.
OTOH, given that MS is betting the whole farm on Win8, would not suprise me in the least that they would shut down virtualization support in all but a special, more expensive, Win8Virtual edition.......
Edit: BTW, the latest Oracle VirtualBox does incorporate Win8 profiles in both 32 and 64 bit versions, so it would not suprise me that the latest Fusion 5 did as well.

  • Camera Raw (8.7.1) is lagging, adjustment brush esp erratic, running on a Macbook Pro (Yosemite 10.10.1) Please help it's driving me nuts!

Hi, Camera Raw keeps stalling / freezing and then doing erratic catch up.  It's driving me mad and has made production levels practically zero.  Please help!

In a nutshell:  Yosemite is a work in progress and full of bugs.  Apple doesn't get a major release right until the dot five update or so.  Yosemite has a long way to go till it gets to OS X 10.10.5.
Many users have been advised to downgrade to Mavericks.

  • Airport not available on MacBook Pro 15 unibody mid 2009, PLEASE HELP!!!!

Ok, so I just recently put in a new hard drive and battery by myself, since my original MacBook Pro hard drive became "corrupted" most likely due to a parallel desktop software I was using. Anyway so I finally install everything on the new hard drive and airport is not working. The icon is NOT EVEN THERE on the menu bar. I go into Network and the only thing I've got is Ethernet and Firewall. I've tried the "+" thing, and it didn't work. I then went into "Assist Me" , then "Diagnostics" and the airport option is greyed out, so is the external modem. Oh, and the operating system is Snow Leopard  OS X 10.6.3. Has a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor.
I also deleted the "SystemConfiguration" Folder and found something interesting. The "com.apple.airport.preferences.plist" was never there and when I reboot, the "com.apple.network.identification.plist" also disappeared. I had to drag it back into the folder from the desktop where I put a copy just in case something weird happened, which it did.
I checked System Profiler, clicked on AirPort and it gives me stuff under "Software Versions", so I'm guessing it's acknowledging that THERE IS a card and can give me all the information for it, but I can't get the mac to use it. I reset the PRAM AND SMC and still nothin.
So, I figured it must be hardware, right? So I open the mac like i did when I installed the new hard drive and battery, and I CANNOT FIND THE DARN AIRPORT CARD. On the mid 2010 models it's with the bluetooth card at the top and I've tried looking online for ANYONE, who has tried to get to the airport card on the mid 2009 model for the MacBook Pro 15 unibody. And found nothing. I think it's in the clutch, but I'm too scared to touch that area. Does anyone else have any ideas or have I covered all my bases?
I REALLY DO NOT want to go to Apple. I don't have AppleCare and don't have the money to have them poke around and tell me the same thing I already know. And I spent way too much on this computer to not be able to use it to full capacity. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

  • MacBook Pro Problems at Start Up: Please Help!!

    Hellos and Saluations,
Lads and gents: I first want to say what a brilliant board you all have here. Congrats to the admins and mods for a splendid job!
My new friends, I have a MacBook Pro (Intel) that I purchased a little over 1 year ago. I was still running Tiger when, about 6 weeks ago, upon opening the book, I started getting a gray screen that would stay there for a few seconds, then allowing me to start working. Fast forward to 4 weeks ago. The same thing happened, but it got stuck on the gray screen. The next morning it had the same symptoms, but eventually after messing with the mouse pad it came back on. Unfortunately, today it's doing the same thing, and it's stuck on gray.
Being a noob to this forum doesn't make me a board noob in general. I did some searches on this and have tried a number of things from other thread suggestions.
    Things I've tried:
    A. At start up, holding the Option, Apple, P, R buttons.
    B. At start up, holding the Shift button
    C. At start up, holding the C button (this produced an audible sound only)
    D. There is no Apple icon on the screen, just gray/blue
    E. There is no spinning wheel of death
    F. I haven't spilled any liquid on it, nor dropped it
A couple of weeks ago, I took the computer to the Apple store. They ran a stress test and tried to replicate the issue, but couldn't. I was advised that they determined the issue to not be hardware/hard drive related; but that the problem was most likely software based. At this time I took the opportunity to upgrade to Leopard. For a little over a week the book was good to go -- no issues at start up. However, not even a week later, when I returned home from work the issue reared it's ugly head again. After a couple attempts at hard shut downs I gave up. The next morning, same thing except that it eventually came back on...
Fast forward to last night.. the MacBook Pro has been on the gray/bluish/greenish screen for close to 24 hours now. I've tried re-booting several times now; pulling the battery then restarting, restarting in safe mode, letting the battery go completely dead then powering up after plugging it in, etc. NOTHING works...
This really fails. The book is only 14 months old and only used for a couple of hours/day. The "genius" at the Apple store advised me that this issue isn't hardware related, but I'm beginning to think that it's a video card issue, which, if I'm not mistaken, is incorporated into the motherboard -- making it a hardware issue. I'm gonna be hells p!ssed if they tell me it's the video card or the screen. Both will be stoopid expensive and, after only 14 months of light use, very very disappointing to their quality.
Anyways, sorry if this is long winded, but I don't know any other way of explaining..
Thanks in advance for any help that people can provide! Again, great forum too!
    Darren

So yea. Just returned from the Apple store. They've deduced that the culprit to this issue is my video card. Whilst they were diagnosing the problem, I let the genius know that this is my first Mac product; that I run an international mail order business with 45 windows based pc's; that this book was somewhat of a trial to determine whether or not we would switch to Mac for our network; that we have a deal with Dell on the table to provide us with all new Dell computers; and finally that, given this catastrophic qc failure, we would more than likely be going with Dell (depending on if Apple was going to take care of me on this or not).
Apparently this got through to the genius, as he advised me that, given the book was only 1 month out of warranty, they would be replacing the motherboard pro-bono. This was greatly appreciated by me (and my company) and we will be in talks with Apple to have them provide us with our new network. This whole ordeal, while somewhat insignificant to the overall day-to-day issues of my life, still had me rather concerned about the quality control, and especially customer service of Apple/Mac. I have a new found positive outlook on their service at this time and will report my dealings on all of the international forums that my company is a prominent member/vendor on.
Last,I will continue to update this as it still offers to add to the comprehensive knowledge base of MacBook issues and Apple customer service.

  • Macbook pro 13inch freezing playing videos, please help!

    Hello all,
    Here is the scenario:
I have a macbook pro 13" running windows 7 via bootcamp. Recently a window pops up telling me there was a major update available for bootcamp and some other stuff. I downloaded it right away. Even though I was running windows 7 at the time, it seems like it was the mac os that was telling of the update. Anyway, I have not seen what if anything the update fixed as my keyboard light is always on no matter what.
But right after the update I noticed that my computer keeps on freezing after playing youtube videos. In fact any video from any website will freeze it anywhere from 10 seconds to sometimes over a minute. Sometimes it does it even when the video is on my hard drive right when it ends or if I stop the video midway.
I thought the culprit was google chrome I had intalled right around the same time I downloaded the update. However after I uninstall google chrome, the problem still persist.
    Is there a fix?
Am I alone here or have others experience the same thing?
    thanks in advanced!

You may want to post in the Boot Camp forum to target the specialists over there. I don't know anything about Windows or Boot Camp, but does the problem occur in OS X as well?

  • Macbook Pro and high-pitch sound, please help!

    Hello,
I have a Macbook Pro 13 inch that is almost brand new. I just got it 3 months ago for my birthday. About a month or two with my new computer I started hearing a high-pitch sound comming from the computer. The sound only lasts about 3-6 seconds and it goes of at random times. It might make the noise 5 times in one day but then it might go away for 3 days, totally random. The sound comes if the computer is sitting there or is being used. After about 3 months of this going off I deceided to bring it to the Apple store in New Haven, CT. Does anyone have the same problem?
After bringing my computer in and telling them the problem, they tested in for about 30 minutes. Everything was fine. No fan problem or hardrive problem. I brought the computer back home and within 3 days the sound is back. I drove to the Apple store again told them my problem, again, and they did they same test with no results. Brought it back home, noise is still there. This time im starting to get angry, they arent offering any solution. I bring it back and they take it for about 48 hours and do a extensive check. Nothing was found. I bring it home again and the noise is still there. My father and I went to Apple pretty angry and told them that we appreciate the time they take but something really needs to be done. They have sent it out for 3-5 days and we are awating a phone call to see whats wrong.
I am hoping that they find something or if they dont can they can replace my computer? I am not spending hours of my own time and gas money going back and forth to Apple for no reason..the Genius bar guys have been no help telling us basically that we are lying and that there is nothing wrong when clearly there is. What can I do? Has anyone had this same noise come from their computer? I really appreciat everyone that decideds to throw some input in. Thank you so much.

Make a recording of the sound so the next time you take it in you can let them hear it. It might be best to do a video of the unit so the sound is combined with pictures/video of the computer so they know  the sound is coming from it.
IMHO the guys at the B-bars are just about useless for this type of thing. If it isn't a bad drive, HDD or DVD, and the system seems to run OK (actually even if it doesn't run OK but runs at all) they will say "Everything looks OK". Or if the thing is dead they can help. That help will be "You need a new HDD" "You need a new DVD drive" "You need a new Logic board" and that's about it.

  • I installed bootcamp 4.0 4033, installed window 32 bit but can't install the drivers for some reason i keep getting error message. i have a macbook pro mid 2011 version. Please help

I installed bootcamp 4.0 4033 so that I can install windows 7 32 bit on my mac.  Everything works fine until I try to install the drivers and I get an error message stating the version of windows does not work with the drivers I am trying to install.  I have a feeling somehow I am downloading 64 bit drivers when I need 32 bit.  I spoke to Apple and they said I can't use 32 bit windows.. but that is not what the support site says (it says I can as long as I use bootcamp 4, not 5).  Also, my bootcamp assistant is version 5.. I have no idea if that matters.  Help please.. been searching online for hours.

What model/year is your Macbook Pro? What operating system version?

  • Vertical colored lines on screen of macbook pro after dropping it! Please Help!

So my macbook pro was on my bed when I fell asleep and I must have pushed it off during the night. Anyway, I opened it this morning and now I have black and colored thing vertical and horizontal stripes on the screen and I don't know what to do! Please give me any help or advice you can, I am really worried about it!

    Best case scenario:
The LVDS connector was dislodged and will just need to be re-plugged.
    Worst case:
The drive array to the display has become delaminated and the display will have to be replaced.
Since it's a Retina, do you still have Apple Care?

  • My Macbook Pro is Infected, Seriously! Please Help!

I paid 4000$ for my macbook and it was working fine for a year. Now my internet is incredibly slow and sluggish. To load a single web page takes literally 5 minutes wirelessly but still sluggish when plugged up with the ethernet cable. There are popups that are displayed in my browsers firefox and Safari that say "This is not a Joke you are a winner" and prompts me about a Dell notebook I had won. It then redirects me to some adserving site and mentions FreeZinger in the fineprint. Something is going on because I have downloaded and ran multiple virus and DNS changer scans, iAntivirus, securemac, and etc. At first I thought this was a minor problem but its still there. I ran sudo through the terminal and nothing came up. My internet was blazing fast but now is slow no matter where I use it, whether at school, home or work. Please help ASAP because I think my computer needs some serious debugging. Dont tell me I am one of the first to get a virus on a mac. If I need to purchase some insurance and send my mac in please let me know. Any help at all with this issue is greatly appreciated.

"I paid _*4000$*_ for my macbook"
Then you were ripped off. The latest top model cost $2,799.00
"There are popups that are displayed in my browsers firefox and Safari that say "This is not a Joke you are a winner" and prompts me about a Dell notebook I had won."
Go into your browsers preferences & select the +"Block Pop-Up Windows"+ (or something similar) setting.
"I have downloaded and ran multiple virus and DNS changer scans, iAntivirus, securemac, and etc."
Uninstall them all. Not needed for Macs. There are no known viruses for OS X.
If you want to feel safe from +trojans+ download ClamX which is a free download from their website, Versiontracker & MacUpdate.
"Dont tell me I am one of the first to get a virus on a mac."
Try running repair permissions from your HD and afterwards run +repair disk+ and repair permissions from your software install DVD.
How much HD space do you have left?

  • Macbook Pro Slows To A Crawl, Please Help!

Ok so here's the problem. I realize people get this problem all the time but it's usually for various different reasons so I figured I'd throw my story down and see if any of you know what it could be.
About a week ago I dropped my Macbook Pro from my bunkbed at college. I know, I know. I know more than you guys how stupid and terrible of a feeling it was just witnessing it fall to the ground without me being able to do anything about it. Luckily(?) it fell directly on its top. I freaked and frantically opened the thing and to my surprise it worked perfectly fine...
...Except for the fact that now every single time I open up the lid to use it the SuperDrive I believe makes 3 annoying sounds that sounds strikingly similar to a disc being ejected or inserted. I discovered some things to help that but I realized that it wasn't too big of a deal, especially when the laptop decided to hit the ******* today, making my problems much greater.
I was simply putting some music files into iTunes, with my iTouch connected. As they started to download or whatever they do in iTunes, it would always freeze at a certain song, making me restart the laptop. Every time I loaded iTunes back up and it attempted to download the songs I would get an error messages saying that 'my backup may be corrupt and to delete the files'. One time after restarting I went to iTunes to find all my songs gone and only the ones from the Cloud (not mine, my sisters) on there. This is when I decided to get rid of all the cloud songs and re-put all mine (2700ish) back onto iTunes. About 2/3rds of the way through it hit the can and gave me a beachball. I then went to look online for how to do that and before long the entire laptop began to slow. I mean slowwwwwww. Its only gotten worse. Clicking on anything will result in a beachball and a 10-15 minute wait at the minimum, and that's just to click on a icon on the dock. The slowing begins immediately from booting up the MBP. I believe the process of turning it on after a Shut Down is now beginning to take longer.
It's too slow for me to even attempt to do anything with these 'corrupt backups'. I just don't know what caused it, seeing as I was doing something I do all the time. And I surely don't know what could be done to fix it.
Also interesting(uninteresting?) to note is that nothing on the Activity Monitor is out of the norm. When no application is being used (I wouldn't be able to test it out otherwise) the CPU, RAM, and all that good stuff is per usual, like 98% idle, 2% used, etc..
    Any help is much appreciated!

Damage was done when your computer fell.  Your warranty if you have one and Apple Care do not cover accidental damage.  Your only alternative is to take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.
NOTE:  If you are out of warranty and purchased the computer with a credit card, discuss the warranty issue with the credit card company which you purchased the computer with.   They are the only ones who can at this point cover the computer after it goes out of warranty with the manufacturer (Apple).
If you have Homeowners insurance, place a claim with them.
