my macbook pro randomly turns the screen black when it's still on!
i tried to change the energy saver settings but it still happens.
i turn my computer off aprox. every 2 days i tried to bring a solution to this but its just weird
please help!
ps. this has been happening since i downloaded the first version of OS X Lion

I have a Model - MacBook Pro Laptop and the screen recently turned the colour grey, giving me no visibility or access to the unit.
Has anyone had or seen this problem before? Can it be fixed? I had a repair guy from my local Mac Store take a look at it - he said I needed a whole new screen and top of the computer, but this didn't fix the problem. I took the unit home unrepaired, and a week later it was all of a sudden working fine.
What is happening with my Laptop? Once this happens (grey screen) does it mean that it's going to become a chronic problem?

But if you got the screen replaced, took it home and now it works, why the repair shop didn't get it working before it left the store is beyond me.
Unless the repair shop is a authorized apple reseller/repair, I wouldn't have taken it to them, and of you did, they should have fixed the issue right away. -

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

- Try a reset.
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Then connect to your computer and try to restore.
- See if placing the iPod in recovery mode will allow a restore. For recovery mode see:

- If the logo still show all the time, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an hour try the above again. -
Macbook Pro...my screen goes black and it restarts itself. The message after it restarts says "restart due to problems" Any ideas what I should do or look for? It randomly happens and is becomeing more frequent.

My MacBook Pro Beeps and the Screen Goes Crazy
I upgraded my RAM from 4GB to 8GB a couple months ago. Ever since then, my MacBook would freeze and the screen would get all weird and distorted, and then it continues to sound off three longish beeps. I can't do anything except hold down the power button until it shuts off. This only happens every couple of days. I'm thinking it's a RAM issue and I've already tried reseating the RAM, but it keeps happening. Anyone have any solutions? Maybe the RAM is faulty?

Macbook Pro:
When I raise the lid after sleeping, the screen comes on momentarily then backs out. If I close the lid and raise it again, the same thing happens. It is sometimes necessary to force quit. Once restarted, there is no problem unless the lid is closed for a short time and the machinge goes to sleep.

I don't know if it's a hardware issue, software issue or what. If replacing the screen or other parts would help? Or if the phone is done for? Just really desperate! I don't know what to do! I haven't ever dropped the phone or had any water damage either... Please help!
1. Try doing a hard reset:
Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears.
2. If that doesn't solve the issue, backup the device and restore it as new.

NB: set up as a NEW device because a software issue will be in the backup. If the issue persists after restoring as new, you should offer the device for service.

Backing up Macbook Pro..When the screen is shot.
Ok I have a late 2007 Macbook Pro that I currently have Apple Care on it until July 2010. Now my problem is my entire screen is dead. The Apple logo on the back isn't lighting up, the screen is black, not even the DVI port works. Only the keyboard and sound works as though it is still on. I went to a Genius Bar and they told me they would have to send it in to get a new logic board and most likely my HDD would have to be replaced and I would lose most of my data cause the last time I backed up was about 6 months ago and that was on DVD's. The genius said I could back it up with an external HDD and he would show me how there, but I want to do it before I go in again on Wednesday, and I was wondering if anyone knew how to do it another way like using a key stroke or something like that, cause as I said before I can't see anything. Any help would be appriceated. Thankyou.

Do you have access to another Mac? If so, you could access your drive using Firewire Target Disk Mode:

You would also need an external drive, preferably a Firewire one, as large as or larger than your internal drive. Once you have your internal drive and the external drive mounted on the host computer, you could clone your internal drive onto the external, making an exact copy of it using a cloning utility such as Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner.

I would recommend making a bootable clone of your hard drive over using DVD's for backup. Over time, DVD's can turn into little gold frisbees unless you get the archival grade. A bootable clone is useful because if your internal drive dies, you can boot from the external and keep on computing. Also, if you get a new hard drive, you can clone back from the external and be back where you were when you sent it off.

MacBook Pro closest to the screen USB port doesn't work

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro 6,2 (15" 2,66 GHz i7 4GB RAM) which is in perfect conditions. I use it everyday to study and play the X-Plane simulator, basically, so it has never fallen nor taken any damage. Last week, all of the sudden, the USB port located closest to the screen stopped working. I've spent several hours trying to figure out what the problem is (tried the SMC and NVRAM reset more than once) but all I got was this log from USB Prober:

I imagine that the problem is in the BRCM2070 Hub, as it's status in the "Port Status" section is "STATUS(change): CONNECT ENABLE SUSPEND POWER Full Speed" and "Port Power State: Suspended (Driver)", while my other USB port which is working okay is "STATUS(change): POWER Full Speed" and "Port Power State: No connection". If I connect anything to the problematic USB Port the status won't change, while, if connected to the okay one, it will show what's connected instead of saying "No Connection" (e.g. iPhone). The only thing that gives a sign of life when connected to the problematic one is my Samsung External 500GB HD, but it simply lights up, doesn't mount nor is recognised. After a minute it turns off while still connected. I don't know how to proceed as I don't have any Apple Stores near me.
Is there anyway to work this problem out or I should just wait until the end of this year to go to the US and take my machine to a Genius? This problem is really annoying me, as I frequently use one of the ports to charge my iPhone and the other one to connect my mouse. I'm thinking about buying an USB hub to bypass the problem, but it would kill my MBP's portability.I solved my issue and I believe it was router related. I have a router through Verizon and their Fios service. My router was old so I caled for a replacement. when I received thereplacement I switched it the router to only accept 802.11n and this did the trick. Problem solved, stupid router.

Can watching videos too often on Macbook Pro "wear down" the screen?
I watch most of my TV shows on my new macbook pro, and my mother just informed me that if you watch videos too often on a mac, that the screen can apparently wear down and die. Is this true? I'm not sure exactly what she meant by that or what could happen to my computer, but it doesn's sound exactly correct. Thanks!
Back in "the old days" when we all had green letters on black screens like in "War Games" (Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy) there were problems with "burn in" which was caused by the fact that only certain parts of the screen got used because the displays were text only. This is kind of like a prehistoric version of the problem with early plasma displays. Efforts to save CRT screens led to the creation of the ever-popular "Screen saver."
Most moms don't track display technology, so the notion remains that all video monitors are just shinier versions of last century's 15"/50 lb. wonders. Not so. Today's monitors will wear out, but most will be killed by their users long before that. Modern monitors CAN go off in color, loose brilliance, etc. over time but not specifically from movies. Notice I said movies, not video. The way we use computers these days, pretty much everything is video.

My macbook pro keeps terminating the screen saver app!! Help plz!
basically what happened the first time it crashed is this. i went into the screensaver settings and switched to the itunes art work screen saver. then i opened up the setting button. i switch the number of rows to 2. as soon as i moved the slider down to 2 rows, it closed out of it and i got that "application quit unexpectedly" window.
However now, when ever i open up the screen saver and desktop icon in system preferences, it opens up to the desktop tab, and then i go to the screen saver tab and it is still working, but then i click on itunes art work screen saver and it quits again. so i hit the reopen button on the error window and it takes me back to system preferences. i then click on desktop and screen saver icon and it once again crashes. do it again and it crashes again. then the third time it opens up ok, but whenever i go to itunes artwork, it crashes again and i have to go through the 2 crash cycle again.
Please help me if you can. the only thing i did tonight was update my MBP firmware to 1.0.1 and downloaded an aqua teen screen saver which i didn't even install cause it didn''t look like something that i could run. I just deleted.
please help if you know anything about this kind of problem.Ok i managed to figure out a way to keep it from crashing all of the time. i go into User/Library/Preferences/ByHost and delete com.apple.screensaver.itunes.xxxxxxxxxxxx.plist. this help me so that i am able to open up the screensaver window and even select itunes artwork from the list of screen savers. this works fine because it seems to restore the default setting for this screen saver. But if i open the options screen and try to set it to 2 rows, then it will go right back to crashing again.
Can somebody please help me out with this 2 row problem? i'd greatly appreciate it. -

I have updated my snow leopard to lion 7.2, eversince that, whenever i use my macbook for graphic intensive stuff (games or even watching movies) causes my pro to halt with a frozen screen. Does anyone face the same problem?
