My MacBook Pro recently started making a loud whirring/chainsaw noise from the middle of keyboard area. When I put the laptop sleep, the sound eventually fades, but it will start up again once the laptop is up and running. I'm 17 and broke, HELP ME PLEASE

I really don't know what to do, my laptop is my lifeline with school and college, I can't have a serious problem with it right now, any advice?

15" = 2 fans, left & right. HDD in lower-right corner.  See here for component placement (click on appropriate model, choose the fan guides): http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBook_Pro_15%22
Replacement fan: $60 + shipping. 13 screws altogether.
Determine which one with Old Mechanic's Trick: get a solid metal rod of adequate length 3/16"-1/4" dia., place one end against the bony area next to your good ear and move the other end against different spots on the Mac's body to determine exactly where the noise comes from.
Or replace both to be safe.
99% sure it is a fan.
P.S.: Must Replace Bad Fan. If it fails, MBP can overheat and get permanently damaged. Not User Serviceable.

  • My macbook pro fan is making a loud whirring/cracking noise!!

I dont have a warranty any more. Any anyone please help me fix the problem? I'm looking through previous discussions of the same topic and the answers are not too clear! Thanks everybody!

Could just be dirt in the fans themselves? What model of MBP is it?
I have the first unibody version and the bottom of the case comes off very easily (8 small screws) in order to add or remove RAM.  But, with the bottom off to get to the RAM, the fans are also exposed, so it is very easy to clean them out (I just used a camera brush with squeeze bulb and a few puffs of air to swiff out the dust bunnies from my fans - they had occasionally been making a little rapid clicking noise but cleaning the vanes took care of that).
For the models with the sealed batteries, I'm not sure what would be a safe means to clean them.

  • MacBook Pro not starting up, has faint lines across apple logo and runs hot

Hello, my MacBook Pro 2011 model is not working. I when trying to start it up it has faint horizontal lines, equally spaced, all across the screen. When the apple logo disappears the machine stops progressing any further, and starts running really hot. Yesterday I had to run the batter flat before I could get it to start properly and it ran all day fine. Today it logged in but then went haywire with split desktop and horizontal lines and crashed. Can't get it to restart.
i haven't a clue what's wrong, and I can't afford to replace it right now. Any ideas anyone?
    blessings,
    DAvid

I Should also say that today numerous resets have not solved the problem.
Are you referring to SMC and PRAM resets?

    If not, try them:
Run an Apple Hardware Test.  That may pick up a clue:

Run the extended version.  Note that an error free test is not 100% reliable.

I have the late 2011 edition of the 13'' Macbook Pro a week ago I noticed it started to run loud and now it has this sound like the fans are not spinning all the way.. it very annoying and could bet its not good for my computer.. • Macbook Pro recently started lagging

I got my Macbook Pro 15" i7 in Sept 2010 and its been fine until this past week when all of a sudden I noticed that while scrolling through webpages and applications the graphics were not smooth as they use to be and would scroll in chopped segments instead of a constant flow. Also, when I use spacebar to preview items, the animation of the preview expanding is choppy and not smooth. As of now, my mac seems like its getting worse; it lags when I have a few applications running and sometimes the trackpad takes a while to respond.
I tried scanning the mac for any viruses, found that there was malware and removed it but the problems still existed. I repaired my hard disk after realizing that it was damaged, reinstalled Lion and still there are lag issues.
Any ideas what else could possibly cause this problem?

My mid-2010 2.4ghz core 2 duo MacBook Pro with Lion installed started to have similiar issues. It slows down and lags to the point where it takes a couple minutes to catch up. I build websites so have an FTP, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop all open ,and thats when it usually starts the lag. Im outside of my warranty so I'm not able to get any hellp. Wish I could find a fix.

  • My Macbook Pro (Sept. 2009) has broken 4 hard drives in the past 8 months and my Leopard OS has been corrupted twice. What gives?

I don't carry it around while it is on, I no longer download any huge files since the first one broke, before this latest (today) re-install of the OS, the only programs I was running after the latest HD change were: Word, iPhoto, Safari, Chrome, iTunes. I don't know what could be doing this! I've spend so much on replacement hard drives and have lost so many files already. Also, my battery now only runs for about 1.5 hours (used to be 7-8).

  • While working on PC side, my screen went dark and my Macbook Pro has been emitting a loud buzzing/humming noise. How do I reboot? Am I totally dead?

Help, I was working on my pc partition, using quick books and my machine suddenly freaked out. Screen is dark, backlit keyboard is lit and it is emitting a LOUD humming/buzzing. I can't reboot, turn it off, nothing. I unplugged the power chord in hopes that the batter will run out but what the heck happened and is my machine completely gone? Is this under warranty? I bought this thing in august of 2010 so it's not yet a year old.
    HELP! HELP! HELP!

Hold down the power button and it will shut down. Have you not read the User Guide? (Chapter 4).

These may be your problem candidates:
Uninstall them and then reinstall in a systematic manner and see if the MBP crashes again.  If  and when it does, then that is the troublemaker.

  • Macbook pro retina start to make loud fan noise and work slow

I bought macbook pro retina display less than one years ago. For some reason my macbook pro has been making loud fan noise for about five mounth. Whenever macbook pro makes the noise, all the programs start to run slow. Typing, opening safari, and etc takes forever. It takes 20min to 40min for the noise to stop. At first, the macbook pro made noise once or twice in a day, but now it's making the noise frequently; It happens every 2-3 hours. It got to the point where it start to annoying me. Is there a way for me to fix this issue? If not, can I use one year warrenty to fix this problem? Thank you.

If your Mac works slowly when fans turn on, it's quite possible that there's a process which is eating the CPU and/or RAM.
Open Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities), select "All Processes" above "Show" (in the toolbar) and then, order the processes by CPU usage. Do you see any process which is consuming more CPU or RAM? If so, tell us the name.
Additionally, you can reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • When I started up my macbook Pro after a boat trip (just lying in my bag the whole time) it started making weird sounds. Why does it do that and how do I stop it?

When I started up my macbook Pro after a boat trip (just lying in my bag the whole time) it started making weird sounds. Why does it do that and how do I stop it?

The 13" retina MBP has two fans, left and right near the hinge and about 2.5" each from the edges of the case.
My conjecture is that one of the fans may be failing.  An appointment at an Apple store genius bar is the best option.  The evaluation will be FREE and a fan replacement (if that is the problem) should not break the bank account.
You might run an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11342
This may confirm my suspicion or perhaps find a different problem. Note that an error free result should not be viewed as being definitive.

Is this thing a piece of junk?  My MacBook Air is running fine.  I've literally only charged the MacBook Pro battery a handful of times -- it's brand new.

At these prices don't screw around.  Just call applecare to arrange an appointment at the nearest apple store.

Getting used to changes in the finder. I finally did see the Adobe Patch installer and am able to update applications individually. Should be able to attend to the main apps I use w/o further difficulty. Thnx for the help.

    Polly,
usually there are multiple models of MacBook Pro per model number, but in the case of your model number (A1502), there’s currently only one model for that model number: 13-inch Late 2013.
To reset your MacBook Pro, you’ll need to boot into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as you start it up. When the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk (most likely the top item of the list). On the right-hand side, select the Erase tab. For the Format dropdown, select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”. For the Name input box, “Macintosh HD” has traditionally been the default name — I don’t know if that’s still the case for the Late 2013 models. After that, press the Erase… button, and erase its entire internal disk. When it’s finished with the erasure, exit Disk Utility, and select Shut Down from the Apple menu. When you start it up again, OS X Internet Recovery will redownload Mavericks from Apple’s servers and reïnstall it on your internal disk. Once it has reïnstalled, run Software Update to get it up to date, and adjust the System Preferences to your taste.
