My Macbook Pro Retina keeps freezing on up...

My Macbook Pro Retina will freeze on start up just about 1 out of every 3 cold boots and it's been happening for a while now.  It will start up to the log in screen and after I type in my pw and log in it will freeze with a black screen.  I'll close the lid and the display stays on and I have to hard reset it for it to work again.  Has this been happening to anyone else or do I maybe have a faulty macbook?  Any ideas?

Hi,
I have exactly the same symptoms on my MacBook Pro Retina. It freezes with a black screen right after login, half the time. I have to hard reboot... sometimes the second boot gives the same result, and at the third boot it's ok.
I've installed gfxCardStatus to check if it's an issue related to the graphic card switch, but this hasn't given me any clues.
Sometimes my session opens normally (no freeze), but the system becomes really instable when I launch an app which makes use of the Nvidia graphic card. For example, Adobe Illustrator. In that case, Illustrator freezes and the system is slowly becoming unresponsive, even after a force kill af that application.
It's really annoying, I can't work on that machine... it's like the Nvidia graphic card is half dead.
I hope it's a software issue, not hardware.
If we could have an official answer from Apple, that would be great!
Thanks!

  • I have recently noticed that my MacBook Pro Retina keeps freezing.  I first noticed that the track pad would not work for short periods of time.  Is anyone else having a problem?

My MacBook Pro Retina keeps freezing up.  It seems that it is happening more often as time goes on.
I first noticed that the track pad would freeze then whole computer would completly freeze.
    Most annoying.
Is anyone else having a similar problem?

    Hey B-bram,
For issues with video resolution not being consistent, I would start with resetting the NVRAM on your MacBook Pro. That will reset the resolution to its default as well as resetting other default settings like sound volume and start up volume. Take a look at the article below for more information about that and how to perform the NVRAM reset.

  • New Macbook Pro Retina - Keeps freezing...

Picked up the brand new Macbook Pro Retina on Tuesday. Great piece of kit, however I have found the system has frozen a couple of times now meaning I have to reboot by holding down the power key.
Any advice? Obviously not what I would expect from a £1250 laptop after two days...

Seriously Apple, you make us pay so much money for a "great" product, yet all we are faced with are issues. Please fix this, or a lot of Apple enthusiasts, will start leaving.

    Call Apple Care.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years.   You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

  • I installed indesign CS5 on new macbook pro and keeps freezing with spinning wheel once the app opens. Is there an issue with OS Mav or font issue or a plist I can pull. All other Adobe products work.

Migration should never be done with any Adobe program.
If you have done Migration, you have to UNINSTALL first (if even possible) and then download Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool and run that also. When this is done, restart your computer and install the programs from an original Adobe Installer.
Other question is, if your OS is supporting that version. You can try it, it is not officially supported, but it might work.
But CC will work, upgrade to CC2014 (without additional cost), use that as it is better anyway.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Display freezes

15" MacBook Pro Retina display has started to freeze, "flutter" and crash. After I power off, and try to power back on, there is a "beep" which sounds ominously similar to an "error" beep on a PC. Anyone else had this occur? MacBook is less than 9 months old.

I never had this issue until now. My laptop was working alright, but I noticed ghosting, then I realized that it was overheating and on rare occasions it would freeze. But I never got a white screen saying: Your computer restarted because of an error
neither did I before have this beeping and crashing. It all happened after they switched the motherboard..
I am in Israel, and when I took my laptop in to change the motherboard they said it would take them 10 working days. I can't go without a laptop for that long, I'm a student, and I use my laptop for work as well... Aren't they supposed to give me a replacement or something for that time? I don't understand how the think to take so much money for a computer then not even provide a replacement computer, especially for such a high-end, professional piece of equipment..

  • Macbook pro retina keeps crashing

My macbook pro retina is experiencing random shutdowns. I reformatted my macbook pro but before that, I have windows 7 bootcamp on my macbook together with mac os mountain lion. • Fall 2013 Macbook Pro Retina screen freezing and crashing

    Hello,
lately, I have been experiencing some screen freezes on my Macbook Pro Retina 15''... The screen just freezes, including the mouse pointer and then it doesn't respond to anything. I just have to restart the machine again. This happens sometimes and not every day, but still a few times a week. I just do normal things on my mac while I get this problem.
Also, just recently almost an hour ago, my screen just turned all white and it said "Your computer restarted because of a problem. Press any key to continue or a wait a couple minutes for it to reboot." This time, I was watching a movie when it happened.
I have also verified the disk in disk utility, but no errors.
What may be causing this issue? Hardware? Software? I also have applecare, but I'm eager to find out what's the problem before I hand it to the apple store.
    Thank you very much!

  • Macbook Pro 2013 keeps freezing

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro 13" with Retina display, a late 2013 Model. I have had it for about 3 months now.
    Here are my specs:
    2.6 GHz Intel Core Processor
    8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Memory
    Intel Iris Graphics card
    Running OSX Mavericks 10.9.4
About a week ago I began having this problem where my whole Mac will completely freeze when I'm trying to exit out of a tab in the Google Chrome web browser, or when the blog website I frequently visit is trying to load posts. I am able to move my cursor but I cannot force quit or use any applications, and my wifi cuts out as well. I am simply left with the spinning wheel, and it won't go away even if I wait for more than a few minutes. In order to continue to do anything I have to restart my computer manually and I'm afraid it will fry my hard drive if I have to keep doing this constantly just to run simple applications. I don't have very many applications running at once. I only have Google Chrome and Skype running constantly.
I do use my computer for more than 8 hours at a time and sometimes i leave it in sleep mode rather than turn it off. I have a plastic case on the mac and the weather has been especially hot so I am wondering if the issue is due to overheating, but I'm no expert so I am unsure.
How can I fix this? I've never damaged the device so I'm confused as to why it's having these issues. This is the first Mac I've owned, so I am unfamiliar with how to go into the system and check things, so please keep explanations simple, if you can.
    Thank you in advance!

Have been looking forward of owning a Macbook Pro since our family is a Windows user but if this persists, I might throw it away.
Take it back and and exchange it for one that works. 14 day return policy.

  • New Macbook Pro 2012 keeps freezing (HELP!!)

It keeps freezing, it happens after a few hours, sometimes after a few minutes!!
First, the app (google chroome, safari, skype)  and then, the finder... I can move the cursor but it doesn't respond, the beach ball won't stop spinning and I had to force shut down by holding the power button (not once...two, three or four times a day)
I've done everything, disk utility almost every day (repair permissions), resetting the pram... I don't know what else to do... I was thinking about buying 8GB RAM (2x 4) but I don't want to waste my money if it's not going to work...

Does anybody know what this means? Thanks. Running Mavericks

I went back to apple and they replaced my logic board... It has been about 2 weeks and the computer is now restarting again and I am getting this issue. I have no idea what it could be now. Does anyone have an idea? I think I got a lemon. The trackpad also just got stuck and I had to enable tap to click and I am getting service battery warnings and the battery goes from 30-40% to 0% and shuts off within seconds sometimes.

  • New Macbook Pro 2011 - Keep freezing......

    Hi All,
My new macbook pro keep freezing from time to time......Even though I have updated the OS to 10.6.7, the problem still exists....
    Anyone can help?
    V

If the "funny noise" was a clicking or clattering it is probably a failed or failing hard drive. No, I don't think it had anything to do with the update. I'm assuming the "funny noise" was not the sound of the CD/DVD drive waking up you hear each time your reboot. Does it still make the "funny noise?"
If it is now working, I can't tell from your post, you probably should make an appointment at an Apple Store to have it checked since it is new.
It is generally a good idea to empty the trash and repair permissions (using Disk Utility) before and after any update. You should have a copy of Onyx on your HD. The developer is very active so keep up with the updates. it is free. It's a good idea to follow the instructions.
If I could only have one heavy duty repair solution, it would be DiskWarrior which is available at most Apple Stores. The developer has been around since System 8 or System 9 days. DiskWarrior is $99.95 and considering it will repair problems that other utilities can't touch, it is a steal. I run DiskWarrior about once a month.
Finally, I would get AppleJack which only runs in Single User Mode. That means holding down the <Command> and <S> keys at startup. AppleJack makes it possible to run Disk Repair without having to boot from an external drive or using the install disks. Follow the instructions. AppleJack is free. A plus is you will get to see what is going on "under the hood" because Single User Mode is mostly just the Unix part of Mac OS. You will get to see what all computers looked like just a few decades ago.
    Good luck

  • MacBook Pro 13" keeps freezing up

My overall experience with my new MBP 13" is great! BUT I have a big problem with the machine keep freezing up on me. It happens very often (10-20 times during an hour). When it freezes I am still able to move the cursor around and sometimes see the names on dock items when hovering over, but all activities freeze up for up to 10-20 seconds.
The S.M.A.R.T. status is verified according to Disk Utility, and it's the original Hitachi drive from Apple (250 GB).
Is this a hardware problem with the harddrive, RAM or something else?

    My story:
I purchased my 13" 2.26 Pro 10 days ago everything went well for 2 days and i noticed the spinning beach ball appearing more and more especially on load. Starting video and music often resulted in pauses (spinning ball). My old plastic mac worked flawlessly with 2GB so does the new macbook need more? I added another 2GB making 4GB in total. I decided to update everything update apple gave me, still my machine lags.
Well with 4GB I still got the spinning ball, I have:
    1. cleared PRAM
    2. Verified permissions
    3. Repaired disk permissions
These helped and I received fewer spinning balls still lagging, but I still have a machine that pauses every 10 minutes or so, what is going on?
I think the drive switches off or something I get use a machine like this as it gets worse as the days go by, the above help but it still comes back.

  • My brand new MacBook Pro 15" keeps freezing

I got a MacBook Pro 15" with 750GB memory, and 8GB RAM, and it keeps randomely freezing, im about to go away to boarding school, so if you know how to fix this please tell me.  It is not a problem with using to much RAM i dont think, because I checked activity moniter and it said i had 6.19GB free. Possibly overheating. Any suggestions?

Here is freeing up hard drive space in case you or others need it.
Not enough free space can cause all sorts of issues including freezing and disk corruption.
