My Macbook Pro screen has failed. [2007] part of the bad group of screens. What are my options here?

Hello,
Would appreciate any suggestions regarding replacement of my Macbook Pro 4.1 screen.
It has become blurred and I am told Apple no longer supplys parts for this model.
Thank you

OK, so I think I solved my issue.  It was caused by the system not going to sleep (The screensaver thing was a dead end).
When I ran the console app pmset, I got something like this:
➜  ~  pmset -g assertions
12-06-29 9:11:06 AM EDT
Assertion status system-wide:
   PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep             0
   CPUBoundAssertion                       0
   DisableInflow                           0
   ChargeInhibit                           0
   PreventSystemSleep                      1
   PreventUserIdleSystemSleep              0
   ExternalMedia                           0
   DisableLowPowerBatteryWarnings          0
   EnableIdleSleep                         1
   NoRealPowerSources_debug                0
   UserIsActive                            0
   ApplePushServiceTask                    0
The process that was causing PreventSystemSleep to be 1 was "org.cups.cupsd" which is the print service.  So I checked all my printers, one of them was "In Use".  When I opened it, there weren't any jobs listed.  I went through the options and selected Jobs > Show Everyone's Jobs and sure enough there was a job there.  I deleted it and everything seems to work now.
The odd thing is that print job was probably from my other account which didn't seem to have this screen problem.  Anyway, I hope this helps anyone out there....

  • How to unlock macbook pro that has been remote locked from the icloud

how do you unlock the macbook pro that has been remotly locked from the icloud because i forgot my password

This question should NOT be answered. Using Find My Mac to lock one's computer is a personal security measure for those whose Macs have been lost or stolen and may be in the hands of criminals. Publicly posting instructions for defeating that measure would be tantamount to abetting theft.
If you have foolishly locked your own computer and need to unlock it, take it to an Apple Store. Be prepared to prove you are its rightful owner.

The best thing to do would be to start over. Use Setup Assistant this time.
Boot into Recovery, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume. This operation will destroy all data on the volume. Quit Disk Utility and install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you transfer the data from one of your backups. For a walkthrough, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Don't transfer the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

  • Small MacBook Pro screen scratch: Are they normal for a 2+ year old computer?

    Hello,
I am writing about a topic that may have been mentioned around on these forums multiple times, scratches on the MacBook Pro screen display. In August 2010, I bought my 2010 MacBook Pro and since then I have been very careful with the screen by avoiding to touch it and clean it around every two to three months. However, today, I was cleaning my MacBook Pro screen and a way I examine the screen cleaness is by placing my iPhone 4S LED flash light illuminating the screen which shows the smudges and dirt that the screen has. Unfortunately, today I found 2 scratches on my MacBook Pro screen which run horizontally, these scratches are very small at around 1mm in lenght. They are not noticeable when the screen is on, which is why the scratch may have gone undetectable up until today when I used my iPhone's LED.
Off course I am a little dismayed because through all my carefullness when I clean the screen (I use a gentle up and down motion to clean the screen), still I was not able to prevent a screen scratch. When I close my MacBook Pro, I still use the plastic material that came on top of the keyboard to avoid any contact of the screen and the keys; I always shake that plastic material before placing it on top of the keyboard . So here's my question is it normal for a almost 2.5 year old computer to have two small scratches as the one I am speaking about.
I did find the screen bezel at Amazon and I may buy one as a spare and store it in a secure place and use it if there are more pronounced screen scratches.
Thanks in advance for any answers and suggestions to my predicament.

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro. I do not take any care to put anything in between the keyboard and screen... I just use it as it was made to be used. I don't take any particular care when cleaning the screen... often, it's just rubbing off a fingerprint with my sleeve or the tail of my shirt. No scratches whatsoever.
How your screen got scratched is not something anyone here can answer. We can speculate, at most, but that's not likely to be very useful. I'd recommend not putting anything between the screen and keyboard when closing the machine. That could very well be the cause of the problem, if something got stuck to that material when you closed it between keyboard and screen.
Thanks for the suggestion... I will apply these changes to my MacBook Pro's storing procedure and remove the plastic out of the equation. What bugs me is the fact that because the scratch is 1mm long and horizontal it tells me that a force dragged the material. The only thing I can recollect is when one time a family member accidentally passed close to my MacBook Pro with his headphone jack disconnected and hanging, unfortunately the metal part scraped over the screen but there were not scratches to detect. The impact area as I recollect is close to the scratch but the force of the impact and travel distance was not something as forceful to create such damage. Maybe the plastic is the culprit which makes me feel disappointed because I was using it to avoid problems rather than creating one. Anyways, I think I'll buy a spare bezel for my MacBook and in case there are more future and pronounced scratches, I will send it to repairs to an Apple Authorized Service Provider and give them the bezel.

  • What is the exact name of the cable I need to connect my old hard drive from my macbook pro (it has been taken out of the computer) to my new macbook pro?  I need to transfer files from the old hard drive to the new computer.

What is the exact name of the cable I need to connect my old hard drive from my macbook pro, which has been removed from the computer, to my new macbook pro?  I need to transfere files from the old hard drive to the new computer.

No eSATA to USB. Just a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. Google SATA/IDE to USB adapter and you will get tons of links to buy them. Most likely your local computer electronics store has them, although they might be more expensive buying locally than online.
I have several. You can get either USB 2, which what I recommend, or USB 3. USB is backward compatible so a USB 3 adapter will work on a USB 2 port and a USB 2 adapter will work on a USB 3 port. Backward compatible in both directions.
I suggest a USB 2 type because there have been some problems with certain USB 3 devices, the USB 3 interface used isn't all that good in those certain devices. USB 3 is still fairly new where as USB 2 has been around for over 10 years.

  • Old iMac (2007) dead screen; what are my options?

I have an old iMac from 2007, one of the polycarbonate models, running OS X 10.6.8, which recently lost its screen. By "lost," I mean that one night as I was using it, the screen stopped refreshing the image of the show I was watching, and did not change until I manually shut down the computer. Since that time, whenever I turn it on the screen is completely black. Despite this, I still appear to be able to successfully input commands with the keyboard. I haven't consulted a technician yet, but from what I read it seems that the screen data drive is bad; it's not just the backlight.
    My questions are two:
What price range should I look for to get the screen fixed, if that's possible at this point?
What are my options for getting into this mac to perform one last backup?  (I have another iMac from the same era that had another screen problem which eventually rendered it useless, but before it went completely bad I set it up to allow screen sharing over wi-fi, so I can still get into that one, which makes me wonder if I can hack into this iMac through its wifi.)

AppleCare's Express Lane. Do note that if you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine..

  • I have an 11 week old Macbook Pro that has 15 charge cycles and the design capacity is at 91%, is that normal or should I take my laptop into the store?

Hi, everyone I'm just wondering whether my battery life is normal. I've only had this macbook pro for a few weeks. According to coconut battery, as well as the information under about this macbook. The macbook is 11 weeks old and after 15 charge cycles it is at 91% design capacity? Is this normal or do I have a faulty macbook?

The batteries are supposed to hold 80% at 1,000 charges now - not sure when this started but was a couple of years ago maybe.
Personally I would not worry too much. If you actually notice a signigicantly bad drop in battery life after some time, instead of just by looking at numbers on charts, then yes take it to Apple, but for now, just enjoy your computer.
After more charge cycles, it may become more accurate too - when I first got my MacBook Air it was on about 94% after only 15 charges or so, now it's on about 620 and is on 84% or so which is on par with the 1000 charges -> 80%.

  • My MacBook pro's graphics card isn't compatible with FCP X.  What are my options here?

So I cant even try the free trial because there is no graphics card compatablility?  I have an older macbook pro, 2006, running snow leopard.
What are my best options here for video editing?
I have used FCP before, so would prefer to get a version of that.  Would it be dumb to try and get FCP 7?
    Should I settle for Imovie?
    My experience is advanced intermediate...
    Any help would be appreciated.

You cannot upgrade the Graphics card on a laptop because everything is built into the logic board. Unfortunately your perticular graphics chip is actually built into the CPU, and is a very low performing chip which would definately make gaming hard.
    Sorry for the bad news.

  • My macbook pro keyboard has stopped working overnight. The DEL button, along with O and P are acting strange. The DEL button is adjusting screen brightness and the O isnt working at all. Is this hardware related? or a software issue?

The left side of the keyboard seems to be working fine but the DEL button and other buttons are doing strange commands. The DEL button is adjusting the brightness and other F commands.
The O is not working at all. Some other letters are coming up with other characters.

Try a different keyboard with your computer if possible. If it woks well, it's a hardware problem.

  • Mid 2010 macbook pro that has sleeping issues

I have a mid 2010 macbook pro that has had problems sleeping and the screen goes randomly black but does not put the actual computer to sleep and you can still see and move the cursor. It seems like tons of people have had the same issue. I recently updated the software to mountain lion but it did not help. The problem is when I close the lid, it does not go to sleep and wastes tons of battery or goes black while i am working on it. HELP!

    Order a new battery.

  • Broken (black) Macbook Pro screen, Want to use external monitor.

Long story short I have a Macbook Pro older version like 2007-08. The screen is broken and I cannot seem to get it to hook up to an external monitor. I've tried booting it up and holding cmd + F1, Nothing. I've tried booting it up and shutting the screen and using an external mouse to try and wake up the external monitor, nothing.
Heres 3 things that I can imagine are going wrong.
    1) My external mouse is garbage and doesn't work.
    2) I need an external mouse and keyboard.
    3) I use to run Windows 7 on the computer as well. So whenever I booted my computer on i would have to hold the option key or it would go directly to windows. When I held the option key it would show 2 hard drives the mac and the windows, then I would have to click the Mac hard drive in order for it to bring me to the Mac login screen.
I'm thinking I might have to be at the mac login screen in order to do anything?
    But I'm not sure.
I've been trying to guesss my way around with the track pad to try and click the mac harddrive logo (After holding option) but I can't seem to get it.
Is there ANY other way to get this to work. I replaced my mac lcd about a year ago and not it is black again for some reason. I took it apart today and tried unplugging anf plugging everything in again but it still doesn't work. So I really want this external monitor to work.
Guess that wasn't to short of a story!!
    Thanks,
    Anthony

If an external display doesn't work, its possible your video card is shot or the connector is bad. The Mac Pro's video card is pretty easy to replace. If you have the Apple display I think there are some diagnostic lights that flash when something is wrong with the display itself.
You are talking about a "headless" Mac (no screen) so a search on that would turn up several options. What you need to do is use another Mac to boot up in Firewire Target Mode as a one-time operation. While in there, set your OS for remote screensharing access in the Sharing prefpanel. You can also enable "Remote Login" if you do command line and that is very useful for headless controlling.
