My macbook pro screen is not coming on

Hello , I have a 2009 13 inch macbook pro.  When I turn it on I hear the hard drive clicking but the creen does not come on at all.  I also checked to see if it would work with the DVI on my tv an still no picture.  I also noticed that the apple symbol on the back is not lighting up.  Can someone help?? Thanks

If you have AppleCare, give them a call.  If not, take your MBP to your local Apple Store or AASP.  Let them properly diagnose the problem and provide you w/a repair estimate.

  • MacBook Pro screen does not turn on after using external display?

    Hello,
I am using a 15 inch MacBook pro from mid 2012. At work I connect it via mini-display port to an eternal monitor. Recently however, sometimes after I go home and try to turn the laptop back on, it turns on, but the screen does not. If I connect it to another external monitor, it uses that as the default display. Sometimes I can just restart the laptop and everything is fine, other times I have to turn it back on while holding the shift key in order for the laptops built in display to be used.
After work, I unplug the mini-display port, and then power off the laptop.
Can anyone help me understand why this may be happening so I can prevent it from happening again?
    Thank you.

    Try a smc reset:

Also try a pram reset. Power off, power on holding the keys: Option, command,P,R(no commas) press the keys before thr start chime, then hold them till you hear the chime 2 times. Release and reboot.

  • Macbook Pro Screen Does Not Turn On

I just updated the firmware my Macbook Pro (late 2007-2008).  It has been running on Mountian Lion for about a month, and the update was the newest set released by Apple.  The firmware was installed and the laptop rebooted.  I heard the chime, and then the computer screen never came on.  I can turn it on, but the screen never comes on.  The white light on the front of the computer comes on, and does not blink, even if the screen is closed. I have held the power button down to force shut down, and it will eject a disk if one is in the drive, but the screen still does not come on.  It makes no noise when I reboot it manually.

  • Comparing MacBook Pro screen with Intel iMac

I'm wondering if anyone here that has a MacBook Pro has had a chance to compare its quality to another mac's screen. I've been working on trying to colour-calibrate my MacBook Pro using SuperCal, and I've noticed that the colour on the MacBook Pro is nowhere near as nice as on the intel iMac.
Obviously expecting a laptop screen to look as good as the larger iMacs is a bit much, but I was still very surprised at the difference in quality.
    Anyone else noticed this?

The MacBook Pro screen is not as bright or vibrant as any plug-in type LCD I've compared it to.
However, it is much nicer than any of my previous laptops (including an Aluminum Powerbook G4). It is significantly brighter, with somewhat better color.
It would be nice if the laptop had a better backlight that could turn on when plugged in, but that's probably up there with my wish for a 2nd processor that would turn on during plug-in as well...
    Cheers,
    Josh

  • Macbook Pro Screen not working properly?

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro without retina display. About a month ago some little kid was playing basketball out by the park where I was using it and the basketball bounced off the rim and hit my computer and broke my LCD screen So I brought it to a repair shop saying they could replace it for 250 dollars. Great! now we have another problem. The LCD has been replaced and the computer boots up just fine. But the external display has quit working... I don't know if it's just the LCD screen isn't working or if it's the actually display, the screen is just black... also they hooked it up to an another computer for display but now when it boots up it gets to the home screen, where you would usually click and account to log into, but there are no accounts!! I know they have gotten in just fine before because they called and asked about my files and such that I had open when the accident occurred... Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong with my computer?? I am not willing to pay and pay and pay to try to fix it if they don't know whats wrong.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
As those lines changes, I think that the problem is the graphic card, not the display, and in the case of the MacBook Pro, it's not better. The MacBook Pro has got most of its parts soldered into the logic board, including the graphic card, so if one soldered part, as the graphic card, gets damaged, the whole logic board has to be replaced, making the repair very expensive. The only solution is to take the Mac to an Apple Store or reseller

  • Apple MacBook Pro Screen Coverup?

    Hello,
A few weeks ago, I purchased a new MacBook Pro 15 inch anti-glare.  I absolutely love the computer.  However, while this may sound strange to some of you, I use the computer a lot while lying down.  Basically, I have the keyboard perpendicular to my chest and the screen out so it is parallel to my body.  When I tried this with the Apple, the screen flopped like a cheap Chinese toy.  So...I went back to the Apple store to ask about it.  I was informed that Apple knows about the issue but the screen is designed that way to make it easier to open and close.  Now I can't speak for everyone, but I don't see to many people going around laptop shopping saying, "well...it's a great computer...but that screen sure is hard to open...I mean I don't have to go to the gym after opening that screen"...lol  So, they offered to replace the screen for me but said it would just happen again.  Anyway, I have been struggling to live with it (devising every plan including trying to jam the hinge with dental floss to no avail.  Today I went to a genius bar appointment because my SD card was not consistently being recognized.  I explained the screen problem as well.  This time they said something about the screen clutch and that it is normal.  While waiting for my computer, I walked around the store and tested some of the display laptops.  Out of about 12 15" MacBook Pro anti-glare laptops, only 2 suffered from screen flop.  I shrugged it off and hoped that my new computer didn't flop.  In case you are curious about the SD card issue, it wasn't the computer, it was the SD card.  Apparently the built-in reader is useless for professional photographers unless you want to restart your computer every time you eject and re-insert your card.  The SanDisk Extreme Pro cards do not work properly with this reader. I am yet to check other pro-level cards.  Back to the screen...so when I got home I tried out the new computer and thankfully it does not flop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  If you are considering a MacBook Pro, please do not settle for a floppy screen (even if you do not use your computer in the position I do)  it is bound to just get looser and looser until it breaks.  Shame on you Apple...my six year old Dell Precision M65 that weighs about 3 times as much as this computer does not flop.  I understand your safety warnings about resting computer on your body, but let's say someone had a desk with a steep angle (like a drafting table, etc), the screen would flop!!!   Lastly, as the issue is inconsistent amongst all MacBook Pros, it is clearly not planned.  This is an issue of EXTREMELY POOR quality control.  This issue has made me quite upset as a company that markets high-end, well-built products should not be covering up QC issues by claiming the problem was intentional.
P.S. Everything else about the computer rocks and I wouldn't got back to PC for anything.

Long....... post. I'll make it short. Read your user manual for the proper use of your MBP and the type of surface the base should be on. This is not a bedtime book.

I have a MacBook Pro that will not boot up. The apple symbol is there and the spinning wheel keeps spinning. Any idea how I can fix this?

    Reinstall OS X.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    OR
Reinstall Snow Leopard without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • Translucent impromptu possible "hacker" message interrupts current session, locks MacBook Pro screen and demands that I restart by holding down the power button of my LapTop to turn it off first. Any thought? Could this be another way to mess with us?

I was listening to a YouTube video on the history of X15 rocket airplanes. All of sudden, out of the blue a translucent back message drops top down, stops the video, locks up my MacBook Pro screen and demands that I restart my lapTop by first holding down my power switch, then turn the lapTop back on. This has never happened to me before. The message was in black & white, and in about 6 languages: English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, Chinese. Does any one recognize what this might be?
The Computer turned back on just fine as if nothing had Now I am freeking out that they could be reading my key strokes or something. Could they have used this tactic to install malicious software on my computer by first taking away my ability to do anything about it being that I am not a software engineer? Can any one think of anything simillar? I reported this as a bug to APPLE the regular way, then cleared my Safari cookies, then run software update which returned nothing new as in " your software is up to date at this time."
    Can any one please help?

    Hi stedman1,
Thank you so much. This seems to make sense to me now. I was freaking out a bit that some hacker could be messing with my MacBook Pro. I will be monitoring this issue from now on as it has never happened before.

  • MacBook Pro (Late 2010) not booting up properly

I have a late 2010 MacBook Pro that will not start up properly, when I hit the power button the screen flashes white with the chime but no apple logo. The screen then turns off and the white indicator light starts flashing(at normal sleep speed) a few moments after bootup. During this process the magstrip stays solid green the entire time. While the front indicator is solid I tried making sure my screen brightness was not down or if I could turn up the brightness on my keyboard (which I couldnt) and the green light for the caps lock wouldnt come on either.
I have read through some other posts and have reset the NVRAM and tried to boot into safe mode, however I can not do such a thing with the screen turning off right after bootup.
Any help would be greatly appercaited, it was just working the other day and hasnt been moved so I'm lost as to what is wrong

    Kinger2010,
you can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the  OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it reach the login screen now?

  • HT1338 how do I boot a MacBook pro that will not shut down

HOw can I reboot shut don MacBook pro that will not shutdown, please help.....?......

Hi, I'm having similar problem. I just got a Lacie ext drive to back up my photos and vids and now my laptop wont shut down or go to sleep properly.  May or may not be related to Lacie. Could just be a coincidence.
I first noticed problem when I closed it to go to sleep and the apple logo kept flashing on and off.
When I opened the laptop the screen was flashing white then black, then white then black.   Had to force shut
it down (opt, cmnd, power), had to hold it down a very long time before it responded.  However, that didn't keep it shut down. It just started back up again.  But at least it wasn't flashing.
Then when i tried to shut it down normally it would shut down, go black for a moment and then the Apple song would play and it would start  back up again.    It also won't stay asleep. It sleeps for two seconds when put into sleep mode then snaps awake.
strange problem... Very annoying. Next option is to unplug and let battery run out.

  • Cleaning MacBook Pro screens

Does anyone know if it is safe to use Kensington's Screen Guardian to clean a MacBook Pro screen? The product contains: Water, 2-Butoxyethanol and Ethanol. Also can this cleaner be used on an iMac and a iPod Touch screens. Thanks for your help.

Apple recommends against using any cleaner with alcohol or ammonia to clean any LCD screen. Those chemicals may damage the screen coating. The best way to clean a laptop screen is to use a microfiber wipe (such as those sold to clean eyeglasses) or a damp ( not wet) soft lint-free cloth. For more information, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3226
Butyl cellusolve, a component of Screen Guardian (according to their material safety data sheet), is neurotoxic among other toxicities, by the way, so I'd avoid it even if it weren't risky on LCDs.
    Regards.

You misunderstand the memory management scheme and misinterpret the display you're seeing.
To start with, free memory is wasted memory. Once some disk contents have been brought in, it is wasteful to discard that data just to make the RAM that it occupied "free." Inactive memory is memory that is not currently used, can be given to an application that needs it without doing any disk I/O (or used as a destination for reading disk content) but which currently holds disk data that might be useful in the future. I.e., it's file content of some sort.
To get a better idea of how Mac OS X manages RAM and how to interpret the Activity Monitory dispaly, see this tech note: Mac OS X: Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor.
Rosetta is indeed memory hungry, but it's an interim solution. With 2 GB of RAM installed, you can run a lot of applications with alacrity.
Lastly, your Safari, an Intel-native application, is currently using 2 GB. This is a known issue with Safari, though it seems to me that it has gotten better since 2.0.3 was released in 10.4.6. Still, it's a bit of a memory hog, to be sure. Now that Firefox, Camino and Seamonkey are all available in Universal (Intel native) forms, you have alternatives. Firefox seems a lot more parsimonious when it comes to RAM.

My 13 in MacBook Pro screen randomly goes black.  It was purchased in 2010.  It's a 10.6.8.  It started just recently.  The only thing I can think of is is that my 7 year old son played an online game with the computer.  I did check the "hot corners" settings and that is not the issue.  When the screen goes black, I generally end of foce shutting it down with the power button.

  • Crack in MacBook Pro Screen

    Hello,
I am not entirely sure how it happened, but in the right corner of the glass of my 13" MacBook Pro screen there is a crack stretching down to the bottom of that portion of the screen. There is nothing wrong with any other part of the screen, just the crack in the glass.
    I intend to get it fixed before I head back to school in the fall but I was wondering a couple things;
    1. I have the Apple Care Extended Warranty, is there any chance repairs would be covered?
    2. If repairs aren't covered, around how much should I expect to spend to get it fixed through Apple?
    Thanks!

    Hi Jeff,
Probably not what you want to hear, but I doubt it would be covered as it was likely caused by some kind of physical trauma. AC doesn't cover that. But there's always a chance, and only Apple can decide, so I'd certainly ask. Sorry, I don't know anything about cost. Good luck to you.
