My MacBook Pro Screen Issues

My screen on MacBrook Pro is screen shows purple

If you suspect your screen is defective, the best solution is to take it to an Apple Store.  There is little we can do over the Internet to help with hardware issues.

  • MacBook Pro Screen Issue - Lighter Pixels in Middle of Screen

I've had my MacBook Pro since about July 2010. Recently I've noticed when I have something dark displaying such as a dark coloured image or a movie playing where it goes black, there is an area in the middle of the screen that displays lighter tha the rest. For example if I have a pure black image there is an area of pixels in the middle of the screen that is lighter. Its probably between 5-8cm long and about 4mm in height. Its only slightly lighter so is only visible with darker images.
Is this normal or an issue with my screen? Its very annoying when watching movies or trying to edit photos.
    Thanks

The Apple Logo does not have its own light source and generate light, at least on Laptops. It uses the screen's backlight for illumination. This is why you can shine a light through the middle of it and see it coming out on the front of the computer, and is also why the illumination level of the logo coincides with the illumination level of the display. If you dim your display completely so the backlight shuts off, the logo will also turn off.
As a result of this, there is no differentiation between the logo illumination and the surrounding screen, so even if you turn the screen on its brightest and put a completely black texture over the middle of the display, you should not be able to see a change in illumination in the middle, at least from the lighting in the display itself. The only reason why you would see this is if you have a brighter light shining on the back that is contributing to the backlight level in the area of the logo.
If the area of lighter pixels is a sharp square, then it indicates a problem with the screen's output, or a residual image problem of sorts. If you can capture what it looks like in a photograph and post it then that would be great, but without seeing the specific nature of the problem it will be hard to diagnose and your best bet would be to take it into an Apple store to be evaluated.

  • Translucent impromptu possible "hacker" message interrupts current session, locks MacBook Pro screen and demands that I restart by holding down the power button of my LapTop to turn it off first. Any thought? Could this be another way to mess with us?

I was listening to a YouTube video on the history of X15 rocket airplanes. All of sudden, out of the blue a translucent back message drops top down, stops the video, locks up my MacBook Pro screen and demands that I restart my lapTop by first holding down my power switch, then turn the lapTop back on. This has never happened to me before. The message was in black & white, and in about 6 languages: English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Japanese, Chinese. Does any one recognize what this might be?
The Computer turned back on just fine as if nothing had Now I am freeking out that they could be reading my key strokes or something. Could they have used this tactic to install malicious software on my computer by first taking away my ability to do anything about it being that I am not a software engineer? Can any one think of anything simillar? I reported this as a bug to APPLE the regular way, then cleared my Safari cookies, then run software update which returned nothing new as in " your software is up to date at this time."
    Can any one please help?

    Hi stedman1,
Thank you so much. This seems to make sense to me now. I was freaking out a bit that some hacker could be messing with my MacBook Pro. I will be monitoring this issue from now on as it has never happened before.

  • My MacBook pro screen is broken (awaiting part for repair) can I transfer keynotes pres onto iPad air? Without a home screen to navigate?

I am eagerly awaiting the correct parts to repair my MacBook pro screen (my husband dropped it). I have an iPad air but for some reason iCloud has only stored a very old copy of a keynotes presentation I need? Anyway to transfer with being able to see MacBook screen to guide me?

You misunderstand the memory management scheme and misinterpret the display you're seeing.
To start with, free memory is wasted memory. Once some disk contents have been brought in, it is wasteful to discard that data just to make the RAM that it occupied "free." Inactive memory is memory that is not currently used, can be given to an application that needs it without doing any disk I/O (or used as a destination for reading disk content) but which currently holds disk data that might be useful in the future. I.e., it's file content of some sort.
To get a better idea of how Mac OS X manages RAM and how to interpret the Activity Monitory dispaly, see this tech note: Mac OS X: Reading system memory usage in Activity Monitor.
Rosetta is indeed memory hungry, but it's an interim solution. With 2 GB of RAM installed, you can run a lot of applications with alacrity.
Lastly, your Safari, an Intel-native application, is currently using 2 GB. This is a known issue with Safari, though it seems to me that it has gotten better since 2.0.3 was released in 10.4.6. Still, it's a bit of a memory hog, to be sure. Now that Firefox, Camino and Seamonkey are all available in Universal (Intel native) forms, you have alternatives. Firefox seems a lot more parsimonious when it comes to RAM.

My 13 in MacBook Pro screen randomly goes black.  It was purchased in 2010.  It's a 10.6.8.  It started just recently.  The only thing I can think of is is that my 7 year old son played an online game with the computer.  I did check the "hot corners" settings and that is not the issue.  When the screen goes black, I generally end of foce shutting it down with the power button.

Have you tried a Safe boot? Left side SHIFT at power up, hold till you see the progress bar then release and allow to finish booting,. (note this will take longer that usual) Thsi will disable 3rd party software/extensions. Login and see if the issue still persists, if not logout and boot normally.
Another thing you can try is creating a test account and see if it has the same issue there, this will help determine if it is related only to your account.
Also check About this Mac (Apple logo) option, system information, power in the left side bar and check the battery info.
If you have already tried these steps, you should include what you have already tried so people will not offer redundant suggestions.
If you still are having issues, it looked as though you were typing that you thoght you may still be under warrany, if so you may want to take it in and have it checked out, as there the keyboard/screen issues along with the no wake on battery, it may be related to a battery problem?
You can check warranty status by going here and entering your serial number.

  • Macbook Pro Wifi Issue

I incorrectly posted this in the wrong thread this morning.
I'm hopeful you might be able to help me diagnose a problem I'm having. I'll provide as much detail as possible.
I have a first generation MacBook Pro. As of this morning I was running 10.5.6 and up until this week was using a linksys router and a comcast cable modem.
I used to have a great wifi signal throughout the house (always full strength), and around 12-18 months ago noticed the signal would weaken. The best I would get would be minus the top bar on the signal, and usually only if I was directly above or next to the room with the router. There were no new phones or devices added that might adjust the signal. On the other side of the house, I would have no signal at all.
My wife has a nine year old ibook and has no issues connecting through wifi.
When I bring my laptop to her parents' house or to the Apple store, where they use Belkin on N or Airport Extreme, I get a full signal.
I've recently suffered a hard drive failure and had a replacement drive installed. The problem persists despite the software update.
Not knowing if it was a router issue or an airport card issue or a combination thereof, I went to the Genius Bar. The genius recommended I upgrade my router to Airport Extreme, and if that doesn't work to return it and he'd focus on the airport card or antenna. I could get the flat rate repair (no AppleCare at this point) for $320+ to repair the problem if Extreme didn't work.
I installed the Airport Extreme router and got a full signal in the basement, far side of the house, upstairs - everywhere. Until around 10pm. The signal died from the basement. If I walked into the room with the Airport Extreme router, I'd get a full signal. If I left the room, I'd get a partial signal. If I walked any distance (10-12 feet), the signal would die. I restarted both the modem and router with no change. I reinstalled the linksys router and got a depreciated connection. I restarted the Airport Extreme again and got a full signal throughout the night, morning, through restarts, and when I returned home from work.
Last evening after using youtube extensively it died again. Linksys would barely work if I switched back, and no matter how many times I restarted I couldn't get the signal to last outside of the area of the router. I left it in the basement overnight shut down, restarted this morning, and had a full signal.
I'm looking for any potential guesses as to what may be causing the problem. I don't want to replace the card if it's the antenna or sink too much cash into a machine if it's a heat related issue linked to Generation 1 syndrome.
During all of this the ten year old ibook works fine. I know a lot of macbook pros have issues with their wireless and don't want to sink in the cash if it's more complex than that. Any advice is much appreciated!

  • Can't install windondows 8.1 on my macbook pro - format issue

Can't install windondows 8.1 on my macbook pro - format issue
    Running latest version of Mavericks.
    Followed the exact bootcamp proceduce.
Have official window 8.1 version on cd.
All goes well until I have to format the 65Gb partition. Disk=0 and partition=4
Can't get over it. Altough I formatted it via a hint found on the internet with "dislpart" in NTFS. Wich also went weel and give the labelname "BOOTCAMP". But still no luck.
    I have two questions:
1/ How to start my mac again in normal mavericks mode?
2/ How can I overcome the windows installation issue?
Tried already a lot of hints found on the internet.

First, make a time machine backup. You will need to erase ands reformat your hard drive. I had the same issue. The issue is that you can't install Windows using bootcamp without having the hard drive formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Do this from disk utility or recovery mode (hold down command and r at startup). Then you have to restore the backup to the hard drive. Then make a usb installer drive with bootcamp and then partition and install. Here's a tip: after you install bootcamp and are in the Windows desktop, go into the installer drive and then go into the bootcamp or support folder, then find a installer that contains the Apple bootcamp drivers. Also, you will need to convert the disk to an iso file. TO MAKE THE USB DRIVE FROM A DISC, USE THIS LINK

  • Cleaning MacBook Pro screens

Does anyone know if it is safe to use Kensington's Screen Guardian to clean a MacBook Pro screen? The product contains: Water, 2-Butoxyethanol and Ethanol. Also can this cleaner be used on an iMac and a iPod Touch screens. Thanks for your help.

Apple recommends against using any cleaner with alcohol or ammonia to clean any LCD screen. Those chemicals may damage the screen coating. The best way to clean a laptop screen is to use a microfiber wipe (such as those sold to clean eyeglasses) or a damp ( not wet) soft lint-free cloth. For more information, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3226
Butyl cellusolve, a component of Screen Guardian (according to their material safety data sheet), is neurotoxic among other toxicities, by the way, so I'd avoid it even if it weren't risky on LCDs.

  • Comparing MacBook Pro screen with Intel iMac

I'm wondering if anyone here that has a MacBook Pro has had a chance to compare its quality to another mac's screen. I've been working on trying to colour-calibrate my MacBook Pro using SuperCal, and I've noticed that the colour on the MacBook Pro is nowhere near as nice as on the intel iMac.
Obviously expecting a laptop screen to look as good as the larger iMacs is a bit much, but I was still very surprised at the difference in quality.
    Anyone else noticed this?

The MacBook Pro screen is not as bright or vibrant as any plug-in type LCD I've compared it to.
However, it is much nicer than any of my previous laptops (including an Aluminum Powerbook G4). It is significantly brighter, with somewhat better color.
It would be nice if the laptop had a better backlight that could turn on when plugged in, but that's probably up there with my wish for a 2nd processor that would turn on during plug-in as well...

    Josh

  • Macbook pro shutdown issue

Macbook pro shutdown issue when I push the power button it immediately goes into sleep mode

    Hello Marrio22,
Thank you for the question.  With OS X Mavericks, the power button has new functionality:
OS X Mavericks updates the power button behavior on Mac computers.
Using the Power Button to Sleep & Wake
Tap the power button in Mavericks to put your Mac to sleep or to wake it up:
Tap the power button once to put your Mac to sleep.
Tap the power button again to wake your Mac.
Press the power button for less than a half a second to sleep or wake your Mac. This duration is similar to pressing the Space bar or Return key to wake your Mac. The power button works this way across all Macs using OS X Mavericks, including both notebook and desktop computers.
    Accessing the Shut Down Dialog
Press and hold the power button for 1.5 seconds, to bring up additional options:
Forcing the Mac to Turn Off
Hold down the power button for 5 seconds to force the computer to turn off. Important: You may lose unsaved documents if you force the computer to turn off this way. Use this method of turning off your Mac only if it has become unresponsive for an extended period of time. Normally you should shut down the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu, or from the shut down dialog pictured above.

  • Macbook pro screen dims after waking from sleep?

Does anyone know why my macbook pro screen dims when waking from sleep or waking from my screen saver? I can't get it to stop doing this. Thanks.

It sounds like I have the same thing happening. It's more like the colors are washed out, like there is less contrast. I have a hot corner set up for my screen saver. Once I activate the screen saver for a second and then deactivate it, the Macbook screen goes back to normal. I have a 30" Samsung 305T monitor set up as a second (main) screen for when I'm working at home, which is most of the time. I haven't had it unplugged from the Macbook since this started, so I don't know if it happens by itself. I do know that the Samsung looks fine when waking up from the screen saver at the same time.
I tried to find others with this problem in this forum, but got tired of looking through all the other posts that had nothing to do with this problem.
    Can anyone help us?

  • Macbook Pro Screen wakes up from sleep without any acitvity

I've set my MacBook Pro screen to turn off after two minutes of activity. I've had this setting for all my Macs and I've never had any problems.
Recently though, my MacBook Pro's screen turns on by itself without me touching the computer or any mouse attached to it. What could be the problem?
It's really annoying when the screen turns on at night.
    Any help will be appreciated.

I have the same problem. I brought up console and there is nothing at the same time as the screen turning on. My situation is as follows:
I put on a podcast. The only applications running are firefox and iTunes. I turn the screen brightness all the way down with the F1 key, then mouse over the corner of the screen set to turn the monitor off.
After about 6 minutes, the screen comes back on at brightness level 1. If I touch a button or the trackpad the screen turns back off. It stays off for about 6 more minutes and does it again.
Edit: I just checked the logs with all showing and the only thing I see is a Wake Reason = EC LID0.
    Any tips?
