My MacBook Pro sounds like a helicopter

My MacBook Pro is just over a year old. Within the last two days I have been hearing frequent noises of what sounds like a lawn mower or a helicopter on and off. It does not sound at all like the fan (I've heard it before). I'm worried it's the hard drive. Any ideas of what I can do?

If the sound isn't coming from the speakers, then it's either the hard drive or the fan.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • MacBook Pro sounded like a drill machine, seriously. What to do?

My MacBook Pro sounded like a drill machine, seriously. Think it was the HDD. The sound was so loud that I almost fell off my chair. Next day I get this "restart" message, so I try to restart. I then spent an hour trying to turn the mac back on. The mac-made just beeps and would not start, just a black screen.
Now, everything seems normal.. but I have had problems turning on the mac several times. It will happen again. What to do?

If you have not done so already, back up your data.  If your computer is under warranty, Apple will repair your computer for free.  If you are near to an Apple Store, make a reservation to visit a Genius, and have your computer checked out.

  • MacBook Pro sounds like it's going to explode!

Hello. I have a MacBook Pro that's currently out of warranty, so I'm hoping I can find an answer to my problem here. The problem is, my MacBook Pro makes a very loud buzzing sound, especially when I watch a video or work with any high-res graphics. Since, I'm a designer, this is a necessary part of my computing life.
Anyway, the sound it makes is disturbing, and it almost feels like it's revving up to explode! Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Seems to me like the hard drive is working overtime.
    Please help!
    -Bill

Does it sound like a loud grinding/revving noise, as if it's ready to trim your lawn or blow up?
Sounds like the same problem I've had in the past. It's probably your fan — they make that terrible noise if they're a tiny bit misaligned. it's a simple fix at your Apple Store, probably a few hours or overnight repair.

  • Do you know if solid state storage DD of MacBook Pro is like flash Storage of MacBook Air?

Do you know if solid state storage DD of MacBook Pro is like flash Storage of MacBook Air? And do you know the specifications of MacBook Pro and MacBook Air RAM?
    Thanks

Uh, iFixit and the manufacturer of the upgradeable SSD Flash Storage for the 2010-2011 MBA would respectfully disagree. Yes, the volatile memory is not upgradeable, but the storage SSD (NAND Flash) is as upgradeable as it gets.

  • MacBook Pro: Sound Issue. Help needed.

Hi. Recently, my headphones (I use on my iPod Touch too), and my MacBook Pro sound have not been working lately. I have been looking for a red light, but cannot find it. I left my Mac asleep (with headphones in!), and when I opened back up, niether my sound on both haven't been working. I'm trying to configure my Mac settings, but I'm stuck.
Can someone please help me answer this? If you do not know the answer, and have the exact (or close to the exact) same problem, please do not post. I will need all the assistance I can possibly get. Thank you so much.

  • Macbook Pro sound not working in windows XP

I have a macbook pro and recently installed bootcamp/windows xp. Everything works fine in both windows xp and mac os x, except that I have no sound in windows xp. I get the sound on startup that normally plays, and audio plays fine in OS X, but when i run windows, it doesn't detect any audio device (i tried using both headphones as well as the onboard speakers that come with the computer).
    Any suggestions?

    Reli,
Did you install the drivers from the drivers disc you (hopefully) created during the Bootcamp install? These contain the drivers for sound & graphics etc...
I realise you get the startup sounds already, but do you mean the sounds in Windows? Anyway, Windows can be a bit funny about drivers.
Another thing to check, when in Windows, right click on your My Computer icon, go to properties, then in the new window in one of the tabs - believe it's third one from the left on the bottom row - there should be a device manager button (Sorry, I Don't currently have access to a Windows machine so can't tell you the exact tab name). Open up the device manager. Expand the audio and video devices section (or something like that) and see if the appropriate sound card is listed there - this will indicate if the drivers are installed or not.

  • Plantronics Voyager Pro vs. Macbook Pro sound output

I just bought the Plantronics Voyager Pro bluetooth headset to use with my iPhone in the car. It works great. As an experiment, I tried pairing it additionally with my 2007 Macbook Pro. I can hear sound output from some apps but not others, for example, I can hear music in iTunes, but not YouTube videos in Safari. It seems like I should be able to hear all sound output, not just some. Any suggestions appreciated.

The "bug" is specific to sites that stream such as youtube. The sound on my jawbone works with every application including safari but not when I navigate to a website that streams.

  • No matter what I do. MacBook Pro LAGGY like ****. PLEASE HELP

    So here is my story....
I bought my MacBook Pro 15" Late 2011.... two years ago even little more....
after few months a start to have problems with my mac.... stutter... lag.... freez..... stuff that i never used to see in my windows machine...
The thing is that i tried everything (AND i really mean everything) with no good luck....
i hard rest my macbook pro. like wiping entire hard drive and installing OSX from the start.... trying the SMC or CMS key combination to reset the thing i dont know..... booting into safe mode.... booting into CMD+D to check system and system memory and all the extra stuff.... using disk utility to check for errors..... i really used everything i could find with no luck.
(NO WINDOWS INSTALLED) hard disk nearly empty... what ever i do it always lag
why i do believe my mac is slow because whenever i see someone with a macbook pro a run to him/her to use their computer and guess what .... its always faster than mine.... i also check to make sure it's late 2011 like mine or even older. (like a normal right click on a word inside safari take 2 sec to open the menu... clicking the apple logo top left.... take like 2 sec to open.... i dont think this is a normal thing
How ever when i install windows on my machine i get the best experience ever ?
so what should i do now ? i really feel stupid to install window on a machine that should be fastest thing ever happen to humanity....
    my computer ram 4GB
my daily use is : google chrome ..... iphoto..... itunes..... (THATS IT)
i will upload a picture so you can see CPU usage is minimal and RAM usage isn't under that pressure....
again even when i have a clean format i still have the lag stupidity in my macbook pro
I am really thinking to switch back to windows.... my old lenovo laptop with 4GB ram and dual core runs much fasterr and snappier than my macbook

  • Macbook pro sound not working

It seems that the sound on my macbook pro does not work when watching videos such as those on youtube. Please help.

Here is YouTube's help page if you have no sound on YouTube videos:
    http://support.google.com/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=58132
Try re-installing Flash player.  I'm assuming at this stage that all your other audio works fine, e.g. CDs, DVDs, system sounds, etc...

  • Macbook Pro Sound not working with HDMi

Hello, I have an early 2013 Macbook Pro on OS X Yosemite (10.10), 3 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3. If you need more specifics about my computer, please let me know. I use an external LG monitor and separate external speaker, all connected through HDMI (I connect the speakers to the monitor, and the monitor to the computer using an HDMI cable. I find that sometimes the sound just cuts out sporadically and unpredictably. I'll be playing a game, and all of a sudden there is a pop and no sound thereafter. I have to restart the game in order to get the sound back. Sometimes I'm using Chrome and watching Youtube and the same thing. I'll have to restart the program to get sound back. Other times, I have to restart the entire computer because sound is missing from the entire computer.
I've tried switching the sound outputs back and forth from "internal" to "external monitor", with no avail. I've also tried plugging in my earphones (and the sound works), and unplugging them, and the external speaker sound still won't work. After a program or sometimes computer full restart, then the sound will work fine. What can possibly be the cause of this?
    Thanks!

go to display, preferences, while the tv is hooked up to the computer. two boxes will come up, one for each screen respectively.
on the tv that you want to correct, go to color, then calibrate, and then change the colors through that.
Your tv may also not have the default colors on. you may want to look in your TV's setup menu and make everything go to default so you can start fresh and clean. Some TVs will save setting specific to an input and that would explain the weird colors.

  • Macbook Pro sound sometimes won't work. Took into Apple to be fixed. Still not working.

I purchased a Macbook Pro in July 2014 so my computer is still new.  There is no damage to it (it has never been dropped and kept in case).  My issue started about a month to month and half ago.  When watching netflix the show will stop and when I try to hit play it comes up as an audio system error.
The sound won't work and then a few minutes later it'll turn on, as if it was lagging.  For example I would send an email and try to hit the volume button to get the sound to work and then a little later I will hear the whooshing sound from the email and the sound adjusting sounds from the keys all at once. I followed the steps from netflix to fix it which were to uninstall and reinstall silverlight.  That still didn't work.  After a while I took it into Apple and they replaced the switch board.  I got my computer back yesterday and today it is still not working.  I have done everything I can think of to fix it.  What else can I do?

Return it to the repair shop.  Tell them they didn't fix it.  Take full advantage of your warranty.

  • Macbook Pro Sound becomes mute after upgrading to 10.6.3

Every thing on my new MBP was working fine, till I just upgraded the firmware from the 10.6.2 to 10.6.3
Now the sound went mute. No mater what I do, it remains mute.
I tried every thing, went to system preferences, tried to slide the volume slider, but nothing happenned.
Please advise how to bring the sound back.
Do I have to downgrade to 10.6.2 If yes, how can I do it. I am new to Macs. Will i loose my data.

This is to inform the MacBook Pro users, that I solved my problem only after I run the installation disc of Mac OSX, and downgraded my OS to 10.6
I would warn other users, that they should take a proper backup, before installing any Apple software updates.
Though, I am very disappointed that Apple is releasing such updates, without proper testing. It reminded me of Microsoft.

  • Macbook Pro sound problem... sometimes....

My girlfriend has a MBP with a Bootcamp installation with windows XP on it for "windows only" programs.
    Macbook Pro
    15" 2.4Ghz
    2GB ram
2 partition hard drive (OSX and XP)
    Windows XP SP2
However, occasionally we have been having problems regarding sound. Unfortunately, I do not know when it started as most of the time the sound is always off. It would either seem to have started when I installed Bootcamp 2.1, or after I got leopard a couple of months back and installed the new drivers, upgrading from the beta.
I had tried to reinstall the drivers from 2.1, and low an behold it worked, or so I thought. I believe the problem is intermittent, so it didn't actually solve anything. It would seem that the sound always works in Mac OSX, but only occassionaly in Windows. Was thinking of trying to install older drivers, but wanting to hear from the board first.
    2nd problem
When the lid is closed and windows goes into sleep or something, sometimes when the lid is opened and the sleep is deactivated, the screen will not turn back on and remains blank while the system is running.
    Thanks

I got help from another forum.
You have to download the latest driver from realtek.

  • MacBook Pro sound out to airport express other than iTunes

Is there any way to get sound to link to my airport express other than iTune files?
I've gotten iTunes to connect to my airport express and then toslink it to my preamp but is there any way to get audio other than in iTunes to connect wirelessly to my airport express e.g. a movie sound track or a you tube audio? I listen to internet radio through iTunes all day and it's great, but other audio, only comes out either from the MacBook Pro speakers or vie hard wire (or optical) to my sound system. Sounds so simple, and it might be, but... how?

Sure, it's easy. Check out airfoil at http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/
I use it with 2 airport express and also my ipod touch. The "hijack" application they pair with airfoil lets me listen remotely to just about anything I can play on my Mac. Wish I could use the ipod touch as a remote as I do with iTunes.
