Is the little LED on your adapter's MagSafe plug glowing when it's connected? What color?
It sounds as though your battery is drained and the adapter isn't charging it. Try resetting the SMC:

That may start the battery charging again.

  • MacBook Pro Incredibly Slow, Shuts Down On Its Own, Dud?

I'm wondering if anyone else has this problem and if it's worth making the hike to my nearest Apple Genuis Bar.  I am a loyal Apple user, but man, I am having a myriad problems with this MacBook Pro 15" that I'm darn near ready to throw it out the window.  I'm wondering if it's possible I got a 'dud' computer.  I've had this computer for less than a year, and I've already had to re-install the operating system three times.  I don't run any funny programs on it, nor do I download bizarre things from the internet. I am also totally powering down the computer at the end of each day.  Randomly, the computer will simply shut down. Just shut to black, with no explanation whatsoever--and it's in a perfectly aired out place, so it's doubtful it's overheating. Or, for example, if I move the screen toward me.  It will shut the entire computer down.  I've had covers on the outside and on the keyboard since I've gotten it, so it's still pristine. It runs so very slow that it's maddening (what's that joke, 'You want to know how someone really is? Put them in a room with a slow internet connection?) and I get the 'spinning beach ball of death at least 40-50 times PER DAY. I mean, 40-50 times per DAY.  That's kind of insane.  Thankfully, I have Time Machine, but if I'm not backing up every single day, I'll risk losing information since the computer will shut down at will.
I work solely on this computer as an editor of a magazine, so it's incredibly frustrating when my work is suffering.  I'm about 50 minutes from the nearest Apple store, so I'm happy to go in there, but was wondering if anyone knew of any programs I might run to see if there's some sort of glitch.  I've already called AppleCare and they've had me reinstall my Operating System---the last time this happened was about a month ago, and again I'm plagued with the same problems... I mean, is it possible I just got a dud of a computer?
Any help I could run or programs you might suggest would be welcome.  I do not want to have to reinstall my operating system for the fourth time in less than a year.  Because that's plain ridiculous.
    Thanks!

for example, if I move the screen toward me.  It will shut the entire computer down.
You have a hardware problem you can replicate on demand. Make an appointment at the genius bar, NOW. Reproducible problems they can fix.

    Hello mb_bernhardt,
Welcome to the HP Support forums.  I understand that your Officejet Pro 8600 Plus printer is giving you a Printer Failure message and then the printer shuts down.
I’ve included the A 'Printer Failure' Message That Might Include an '0x610000f6' or '0x61xxxxxx' Error Code Displays o... document.  If the error message that you’ve received includes an Error code there is one set of instructions to follow, and if there is no Error code  there is another set of instructions to follow.

  • Cube starts up & shuts down on its own

    I've got a G4 Cube, 400 mhz, 80 mb hd, 1 gb ram, OS 10.4.11.
It's recently developed this odd habit of periodically starting up for no reason at all. There's nothing anywhere near the power buttons on the cube or the display, you didn't touch it, you didn't touch the desk, the mouse, the light switch on the wall, nothing. And suddenly, bing, it's starting up.
Which isn't so terrible by itself. Spontaneous startups I could live with.
It's more the spontaneous shutdowns that annoy me. My wife will be checking email, visiting a website, whatever, and suddenly the computer just shuts down. Sometimes it shuts down, then starts up, then shuts down again just for kicks.
I've reset the PRAM, and that did nothing. I'm thinking I'll try resetting the PMU button on the board, but I'm wondering if anyone has an idea on what might be causing this.
The Cube has an unusual power button, as some of you know, so I'm guessing there might be something about the touch-sensitive variety that makes this sot of thing possible.
    Anyway, any thoughts?
    Thanks.

Do you have anything around that is creating static? any of those tesla coils or lighting balls by chance? Pets? Where does the computer sit (desk, floor, etc)?
see if you can ground the system somehow with a grounding strap or something - my guess it's gotten over stimulated or is failing...

  • HP pavilion dv6000t shuts down on its own

    Hello,
My HP Pavilion dv6000t is now 3 years old and I recently replaced the fan as it was making a lot of noise.  Referring the online guide, i removed all components necessary to replace the fan and put it back.  It worked great for a few months and now I started getting blue screen of death and the laptop shuts down on its own.  I then tried starting it back and it works for like 15 mins and then shuts down on its own.  Found that hard disk gets very hot.  Initially thought it might be an hdd issue.  Got another 2.5" laptop harddrive, inserted it and started installing windows.  It behaved the same way.  During formatting of hdd, the screen went blue completely and then the system shut itself down.   Switched back to old hard disk, installed fedora linux and it installed fine.  As soon as it installed, logged into the OS and it showed error that one of the hard disks is failing with bad sectors.  Worked with the OS for atleast for like 1 or 2 hours with basic navigation, browsing and then again in linux it went to full colored screen and then the system shut itself down.  I touched the section to the left of the touchpad and it was warm.  Tried installing windows again using the recovery CD but it crashed out in 10 mins and system shut itself down.  Dont know what next to replace.  Replacing mother board wont make sense as its as good as buying a new laptop itself.  Any inputs is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi, BrijeshGawande
Have you tried running the hardware diagnostics from the BIOS?  Multiple failing hard drives sounds like it could be a bad SATA controller.

  • Dv9933 auto shut down on its own

my dv9933 laptop is about 15 months old. it worked fine until yesterday. Nothing changed configuration wise, the machine started to shut down on its own. I turned it on, it shuts down in 5 to 10 minutes. Sometimes it even shuts down during windows loading stage. The machine is not hot so i don't think it's a over heat issue.
I had an issue before and don't know if it was related to this one. The machine used to start up on its own. I don't usually shut down the machine and used to put it into sleep mode.  But sometimes it just starts up by itself. This is not a too serious problem but now, i cannot even get the machine start and running. it just keeps shutting down..... any suggestions is appreciated.
    Thanks.
    James

Take it to an Apple Store for evaluation or call Apple support.

  • MacBook Pro will not shut down

A principal at my district has a MacBook Pro 15-inch Early 2008 (2.4/2X1GB/200-5400/256VRAM/AG) running OS 10.5.8 that will not shut down. When shut down is chosen, the computer restarts instead of shutting down. It does not matter how shut down is chosen, whether it is from pull down menu, keyboard command, click on shutdown in the login menu, etc. I have tried resetting PRAM, SMC, starting up from a known good system, and run diagnostics applications (which turn up no problems). The only way to get the machine to tunr off is hold the power button down until it shuts off.
The user complains it also gets very hot when he leaves it sitting open in sleep mode. I have not observed that particular symptom. It also tend to run down the battery faster than it should (battery check shows it to have 80+% of it's original capacity.) But Activity Monitor does not show any unusual activity.
Any suggestions what I can try next to figure this thing out?
    Thanks.

On occassion (like tonight) my MacBook Pro will not
shut down - even when I attempt to force quit. Any
    suggestions?
Happens here too, but very rarely. In my case it mostly happens late at night when OS X is supposed to run some internal maintenance jobs, maybe some of them do not allow a shutdown?
Does holding the power button down for approx. 10 seconds work? If yes, then I would not worry about it. If no, there is something seriously odd and I would report it to AppleCare.
    Cheers,
    Uwe

  • Macbook Pro 2010 upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite keeps shutting down on its own

I upgraded to OS X Yosemite about a month ago, I have a macbook pro 2010, and in the last two weeks it started shutting down on its own. At first when i'd wake it, the fan would come on loudly and then it would shut down. In the last couple of days, I would make sure all programs were shut when it wasn't in use and then put it to sleep but every time i'd return it would be shut down and need a hard restart. If i just pressed the on button lightly it wouldn't start. And when i turn it on the fan comes on immediately. I'm a publisher so I'm working in indesign and illustrator a lot but I keep a constant look out for my memory and this isn't the problem. I'm working to a deadline here and can't afford to lose my computer for 3 days in the mac store (I live in Barbados) to get it fixed. Any advise?
    Thanks
