My MacBook Pro was erased and back up on external drive was reloaded.  How do I reload my address book and bookmarks?

When my MacBook Pro was erased and reloaded, my address book, stickies and bookmarks on all my browsers were gone!  How can I re-load the old contents.  I've looked at all the back-ups.  I find the applications, but not the contents.

You had two choices:
1- you save the files from your user library
2- use icloud which would put them back
You used neither is seems.

If you made backups of all of your photos and your catalog file using some third-party method (i.e. not using the PSE catalog backup command), then you should be able to restore everything.
Step 1. Put the photos in the EXACT SAME LOCATION as before. For example, if they were in subfolders of C:\Users\<username>\Documents, then they must go into the exact same subfolders of C:\Users\<username>\Documents.
Step 2. Move the catalog file to wherever you want it to be, and then double-click on it.

use an email client such as Thunderbird. That stores all your contacts and saved messages on your computer, and you can back up the data as you wish. In my view it's also easier to manage your email that way than online.
It is only easier if you always have access to that computer.
The beauty of having everything online is you can access it from anywhere you have an internet connection.
I use POP and keep on top of my email online when parted from my main computer, downloading retained messages when I get home. But if you want access to all your folders and messages from any computer, you can use IMAP to get the best of both worlds.

  • How to merge faces from address book and Facebook?

I like faces, however, when I start to type the name of somebody on the picture (me), I can choose 2 different "me" - one is from address book and on from facebook. Is there any possibility that Facebook would recognize people from facebook and connect them to my address book (or the other way)?

    I found this:
In Address Book (or "Contacts") select both cards that correspond to the same person (probably one card you created and the other generated from facebook), you can do this by Command+clicking.
Then, under 'Card' menu select 'Link Selected Cards'. Voila, they are now one card. Address Book still remebers these are two seperate cards, and you can always edit this back later.
If you prefer, you can then select the "leading" card that will be represented in the name, through the 'cards' field at the bottom of that person's card.
Since iPhoto uses Address Book's database, this should solve the duplicate person problem, though I haven't tested this thouroughly.
    Hope this helps.

  • I have a macbook pro 10.6.8 system.  My hard drive was replaced under warranty.  Since then, my computer runs hot. The original hard drive never ran hot.  What would cause the new hard drive to run hot?

I have a 2011 MacBook Pro, OS X 10.6.8, 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7,  4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3.  This is my first computer so don't know anything about trouble shooting.  A week before the warranty expired, I took my computer to Apple to be checked.  I was told that my hard drive was bad and they replaced the hard drive.  Since then, my computer runs hot most of the time and the fan is constantly coming on, which is good  My computer rarely ran hot with the original hard drive.  What would be causing this?

    racergirl,
have you tried resetting your MacBook Pro’s System Management Controller, to see if that makes a difference with the heat?

  • 2011 Macbook Pro won't detect my USB 3 external drive

I've got a late 2011 MacBook Pro, running OSX Yosemite with all available updates installed.
I recently purchased a 1TB USB 3.0 (USB 2.0 backwards compatible) external hard drive (Seagate) to use for Time Machine backups.
Quite often when I connect the drive to my Mac it doesn't get picked up - i.e. it doesn't appear in Finder or Disk Utility. The drive does get power each time (you can hear it if you put your ear close enough), however the small light on the drive doesn't come on when the problem occurs.
If I unplug it and then plug it back in it sometimes picks it up - often I have to restart a few times for it get picked up.
Other times it connects first time without any problems at all, which is strange!
It was doing this before upgrading from OSX Mavericks to OSX Yosemite.
My USB2.0 500GB external drive connects and appears in Finder without any problems at all.
I've performed the following troubleshooting steps:
    - Connected the drive to different USB ports (no change)
    - Tested the drive on various Windows workstations (works fine every time)
    - Tested with different USB 3.0 cables (no change)
    - Formatted the drive (no change)
    - Tried different USB3.0 drives (same problem occurs)
I'm not really sure what else to try. You can't seem to get just USB2.0 drives any more in the UK (not 1TB or greater).
    Has anyone else had problems?

USB Ports can sometimes be funny like that. If you haven't already, these are some little things you can try:
    - First things first, unplug all your usb devices. Try plugging a device that you're sure works on your MBPR over EACH of the usb ports (just to check if they're both working correctly & supplying power on the mac itself).
    - Check the USB cable's A plug (the end that connects to the mac) and make sure both the contacts are clean, and that the crevass is free from dirt/lint buildup, as it can interfere with a proper connection. (This can happen if you store cables in cases or bags).
    - Sometimes easing the USB plug slightly out from the computer may help mount certain devices. If it DOES mount (abruptly) after this, then see item above on making sure your cable is clean, or swap out usb cable as it may not be working properly & try again with a new cable.
    - Lastly, some devices may need a firmware update to even connect, as with the cases of the Lexar USB3.0 Card Readers and some Seagate USB HD's some folks here are experiencing with their Retinas.
Here's another thread that may also be useful concerning an external Toshiba Canvio HD.
It's not much, I know, but hope this helps, if a little.

  • How to backup a MacBook pro using 10.4.11 to an external drive?

    Hi all!
I have a MacBook Pro with 10.4.11 and am going to update my OS version to the latest. I want to back up my entire computer onto my external drive first because I'm scared I'll lose everything. I have a 500 GB LaCie external drive (p'9223 porsche design, if that helps!). The guy at the apple store told me, and showed me how, to use Time Machine. I then get home and find out my computer didn't come with it, even though the Apple guy knew which MacBook version I had! So now I'm lost. I heard using the restore function in Disk Utility works but I'm not totally sure I underestand that whole idea. How do I easily back up everything onto this external drive?

Carbon Copy Cloner makes a 'snapshot' of your internal drive. I really wish that you had Time Machine - it would be much simpler to simply restore those files after updating your OS.
Go ahead and make the clone - and then just update your system to 10.6.x. You SHOULDN'T lose ANY DATA during the update or afterwards. The clone is only for safety's sake. I'm 99.8% certain that you will not lose any data by simply upgrading your OS.
That said, after the successful update, you can continue to use the clone method of backing up or use Time Machine. If I had to chose only one, I'd go with Time Machine because it makes incremental backups rather than one-time snapshots. I use both Time Machine and clones - having at least one of each is my preferred method.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Filevault and backing up to external drive

I have a desktop which I use at my office which contains all of my personal and business data. I am trying to figure out how to secure the data on this computer. I do daily encrypted backups to an external drive using prosoft engineerings data backup 3.0 (which is a very good app) so I have a back up. I had tried filevault but got scared after reading about corrupted data and data loss. My question about filevault is: If I have filevault on and if I am logged in to my account and I back-up to an external drive am I backing up readable data or is it encrypted?

But wouldn't monfriar have to enable FileVault to try? That's an easy way to lose your data.
From what I've heard (I don't use FileVault), FileVault will not back up your home directory files while you are logged in. It will, however, backup your encrypted sparseimage if you are logged out. Unfortunately, I also this it will back up a brand new copy of that sparseimage file each time. You should run out of external drive space in about 3 days.
In any event, if the file system on the sparseimage file is corrupted, that will get backed up as well. I don't see how using FileVault with Time Machine would be better than your current system.
I don't recommend that anyone use FileVault without a good, unencrypted backup. If you are backpacking across Azerbaijan, for example, it might be a good idea to use FileVault on your Macbook you take with you. Just leave an unencrypted copy at home.

  • I had to revert my PC to factory settings. I have a recovery folder. How do I get my address book and mail folders back?

I had a serious system problem on my PC and had to restore it to its factory configuration. During the process, I was prompted by Windows to create a recovery folder on an external device. I have mostly recovered from my disaster. I have reinstalled Thunderbird, but it does not see my old email folders or my address book. How can I get them back?

Do you have a backup of your files from the computer before you reinstalled? Otherwise this won't be possible

  • How can I sync my Address Book and ICal with Mac and PC with Palm Desktop?

I now have the IPhone and I love it!!! But I have some issues and need help please. I have a PC at work and a Mac at home. In the PC I use the Palm Desktop Version 4.1.4 and I have there all my contacts (more than 1,100), all my date book (since 1998) and all my memos (about 600). I want to see what would be the best way get rid of my Palm Handheld and have only the IPhone, but I have encountered some problems and many steps. Everyday I have to sync the Palm Handheld at work, then sync the Palm Handheld at home with my Mac (using The Missing Sync, but it takes a long time every time), then sync the IPhone. Can you please help me??? How can I sync my data from my PC (Palm Desktop) with the IPhone? Another, thing; I do not want to use Outlook at work because the information that I want to sync (Palm) is my personal data and I want to keep using the Palm software for that.

    aflores48,
Unfortunately, the iPhone is not designed to sync with Palm software. As stated in the minimum system requirements, the iPhone can sync with Outlook (2003, 2007 or Express) on a PC, or with iCal and Entourage on a Mac. If you do not want to use Outlook on the PC, you can sign up for a free Yahoo account and sync with Yahoo Address Book. Yahoo Address Book can be used to sync from PC or Mac. More information on the minimum system requirements for the iPhone can be found here:

  • My computer crashed. HOw can I recover my address book, and emails?

My computer recently died. It was old and I plan to get a new one rather than repair the old one. Is there a way to recover my address book? Recovering old emails would be nice, but I'm really most concerned about all my addresses.

If the hard disk on the old computer still works, you could get someone to copy the profile from it to a CD. Then you could load that profile onto your new computer. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb to locate it.
If the hard disk is not usable, then without backups you don't have much left. :(
