  • MacBook Pro will not run my external monitor

My External monitor will not come on with my MacBook Pro after I installed Mountain Lion. I get the wallpaper but that is all. Any ideas? I have been running the Mcbook Pro with the cover closed with the external monitor, with no problems up until I installed Mountain Lion.

My hard drive is now connected.  But Time Machine will not let me select the hard drive as my back up drive. This hard drive was used on another Macbook, so Time Machine doesn't seem to recognize the hard drive on the new one.  Do I need to reformat the hard drive? I hate to do that because I have the previous backups on there.

  • My MacBook Pro will not open any application or program that requires internet, even though I am connected to the web.

My MacBook Pro will not open any app or program that requires Internet, even though I am connected to the web. I recently installed Norton AntiVirus and think it may have changed a setting that I couldn't find. I uninstalled Norton and it didn't help. Every time I open Safari, iTunes or any other program that tries to connect to the Internet, it crashes. Strangely enough, Skype still works, but nothing else.
    I have OSx 10.6.8.
I have tried erasing plists, and all the standard troubleshooting, ie resetting modem, restarting computer, reloading Safari from disk.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I uninstalled Norton and it didn't help.
To properly uninstall Norton software follow these instructions - Locate Symantic Solutions folder inside the Applications folder at the root level of your HD, launch the Symantec Uninstaller application, select the Symantec AntiVirus Corporate, Norton AntiVirus & Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect entries and click the Uninstall button.
Confirm your decision when prompted and then enter your administrator password in the space provided.
Retart your computer & Norton should be gone for good.
If the above does not work, download a copy of Symantec’s RemoveSymantecMacFiles removal utility.  This utility will launch Terminal & remove the Norton components.

  • MacBook Pro will not detect displays. . .

I found this link, and it best discribes what is happening on my macbook. I have a thunderbolt to cdmi cord that I use on my TV. Then all of a sudden, it just stopped working. . . My screen flashes black for about a second like its about to connect to my TV, but then nothing happens. Please help. . .
    I have a MacBook Pro 13 Mid-2012 running 10.10.1
Here's the link i found     my macbook pro does not detect external display anymore

    Just one bit of data...
I don't know what the deal is, but I had a similar situation.  (It all worked fine, then I upgraded to 10.9.5 and it didn't work any more, but then I upgraded to 10.10 and then it worked.  Then it wouldn't.  but once in a while it would.  It made no sense. )  In the end I got a different (more expensive) adapter and cable and everything works properly.

  • Late 2008 15 inch Macbook Pro will not detect external projector

I have a Toshiba projector that I am trying to hook up to my Macbook Pro for a presentation tomorrow. The computer will not detect the display. I'm using a DVI cable connected to the Mini Display Port. I know I've got the projector on the right input as my white Macbook with mini DVI will detect it but not display it properly (all green).
I've tried shutting down and disconnecting and everything. I need this to work asap.

Have you checked the screensaver and power settings, sleep display etc in the System Preferences?
You can throw this mega cocktail at it, see if it cleans up your problem.
    Download the free OnyX here
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
Run ALL the maintainence and cleaning aspects, , especially the caches, you can cancel the reboot in between.
Finially run the Verify > Preference file check/repair and then reboot.
This should clean out all your caches and whatnot.
Then look at this support article about resetting the SMC/PRAM

  • ITunes on my MacBook Pro will not detect my iPad

I have a MacBook Pro and the latest version of iTunes - it detects my iPhone 5 but will not detect my iPad (2). I want to back up my iPad on iTunes because my iCloud is full, and I am thinking about getting a new iPad. Any suggestions??

We have no idea which version of OS X you are running, so here are two support articles about your issue.
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X - Support - Apple
Mac OS X v10.6: iOS device not recognized in iTunes after restart
Sometimes it's as easy as quitting iTunes, restarting the Mac, restarting the iPad. Give that a try if you haven't done so already.

  • Macbook Pro will not recognize my external hard drive

I just updated to a newer MacBook Pro.  I ran Time Machine on my old Macbook from a 2TB external USB hard drive.  When I hooked the hard drive to my new Mac, it wouldn't allow me to select it as the drive for Time Machine.  So I dismounted the hard drive and hooked it back to my old macbook to see if it still registered there (which it did).  Now when I try and hook the hard drive to my new macbook, it will not recognize it at all.  First question, why will it not recognize my new macbook, and second question, why does Time Machine not recognize the hard drive?  It has my old time machine files on it...hopefully I don't have to reformat it and lose all my backup??

My hard drive is now connected.  But Time Machine will not let me select the hard drive as my back up drive. This hard drive was used on another Macbook, so Time Machine doesn't seem to recognize the hard drive on the new one.  Do I need to reformat the hard drive? I hate to do that because I have the previous backups on there.

  • Late 2011 Macbook pro will not detect HDMI

I recently purchased a MDP to HDMI adpater for my late 2011 macbook pro (I have OS X 10.7.5). I hooked it up to my television and tried to use it as a monitor but my macbook pro refused to detect display. Heck the screen didn't even turn blue when I hooked the adapter up. I wanted to make sure my port was working and hooked up my MDP to VGA and it worked like a charm the screen turned blue and my cintiq was detected immediately. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem as well?
Ther is a possiblity that it is the actual adapter because I bought a floor model in an effort to save some bucks. So I'm going to take it back for an exchange later on today and see if that works. But if that isn't the case does anyone know how to resolve this issue.

Did you click the "Detect Displays" button in System Preferences > Displays?:

  • MacBook Pro will not detect external speakers, even though it did yesterday

I have a MacBook Pro and it is connected to my HDTV via an HDMI cable and adapter. Yesterday my laptop was able to detect the external speakers in the TV and sound was coming out of my tv from my mac. But today my mac isn't detecting the external speakers and no sound is coming out of my tv. I've tried turning things on and off in multiple ways. Unplugging and replugging the HDMI cable/ adapter. Both of the cables are plugged in properly. Whenever I go to System Preferences>Sound>Output my external speakers aren't showing up. This is so annoying, help me please! Thanks.

I had this problem, too for my 2014 MBP. The output speakers did not show up when I tried to connect through the HDMI port. However, the output speakers did show up when I used an HDMI to Thunderbolt cable.

  • MacBook Pro will not detect HDD?

Hi, I own a MacBook Pro 15-inch 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo. In the middle of my work, my computer had frozen, so I shut it off and tried restarting, and even reset the PRAM. However, I got the "cancel" icon instead. After a few more tries, it turned into a folder with the question mark. I figured it was a bad hard drive due the the result of an accident involving meter fall that happened a few days prior.
Today, I purchased a replacement hard drive - a Seagate Momentus XT, and an external hard drive case for the old one, just in case the old one does work. I booted the computer using the OS X install CD only to find out the HDD hasn't been detected. I've restarted several times and no luck. Meanwhile, I installed my "broken" hard drive into a usb enclosure only to find out that it does work and functions normally. I then tried formatting the new drive to HFS using another Mac, and no luck. I've even reinstalled and switched between the two drives and still no luck.
I concluded that if the hard drives weren't the problem, then it was the connection between the hard drives and the logic board. I made sure that everything was securely connected, but that did not work. The problem is, I don't know whether or not it's the SATA cable or the logic board. Otherwise, everything else seems to boot up fine. My warranty ended September 2010 as I simply couldn't afford AppleCare. Any advice as to what I can do from this point on would be helpful.
    Thanks!

The only way to determine if it's the logic board or the cable is to switch out each. One trouble shooting thought is if you have another computer you could put the new Seagate into an enclosure and see if the other computer can see it, that will at least verify your guess that it's fine. If it's not found then you one that was DOA.
However all that being said you mentioned you got the folder with question mark screen, this indicates the logic board should be OK.
To be honest my recommendation would be to take it to an Apple Store to be checked and to determine what the bad part is.
    Best of luck,
    Roger

  • Reinstall using Retail leopard discs, MacBook Pro will not detect speakers

Hi, I just purchased a MacBook pro used, and the owner lost the original discs. He sold it to me with a formated (no OS) on the HDD, because I have upgraded my older mac with leopard I decided I would reinstall with that. The MacBook Pro is the very last model before the unibody (penryn 2.4/256mb video). Upon installation the greeting video played with no sound, and pressing the volume up key (shared with F12) did nothing, and once to the desktop, hitting that button resulted in dashboard launching (like the old style keyboards would).
Now I cannot seem to raise the volume, or use ANY of the function keys, I also cannot set the trackpad to use gestures. It would pretty much seem my MacBook Pro is missing its drivers for its internal speakers (they're not listed in the sound prefpane), trackpad, and keyboard. HELP!

Well this is mildly embarrassing but it IS valuble to others in my situation!
*OKAY SOLVED* (must be a record I posted the question a minute ago).
I forgot to mention I also couldn't adjust brightness, but after running the software update, it seems all of the proper drivers have been download and installed because I now have full proper function of the MacBook Pro. Thanks for the wasted space, but again, this could be useful for others. If this is happening to you, just run the Software Update tool (under the apple logo in the top left) and let it finish its 800mb update, all will be solved.

I had the same problem, except mine happened after restoring from a Time Machine backup onto my new unibody MacBook. Thanks to the OP.

  • Macbook Pro will not recognise WD external hardrive

    Hello,
My hard drive, which has all my time machine back ups on it, just stopped working. It was working fine last week when I last backed up, however when I plugged it in to my macbook pro today my computer would not recognise it. I am quite worried as my hard drive has all my files and photos on it.
I believe the model of my hard drive is a WD 1TB external hard drive, and it is a few years old. I have never had any problems to date.
When I tried to use disk utility though, it picked up the hard drive in there but said it needed to be repaired but would not repair it.
Can anyone tell me how I can fix this or what my next steps should be?

First see if another computer recognizes it. If not, it's possible the drive is still good and the circuit board in the drive housing has failed. That's relatively common. If that's what it is you need to get the actual drive out of the WD housing and into another external enclosure. Something like this:

  • MacBook Pro will not shutdown with external HD Screen

I have been working with the same configuration for over a year with no problems. I have an external 20" HD screen that I use with my MacBook Pro (cover of mbp is closed not dual screen use) and an external keyboard and mighty mouse. Ever since upgrading to Leopard, when I select Shutdown from the apple menu the computer goes through the shutdown process and the screen goes dark. When I go to unplug the monitor and keyboard the front light is pulsing on and off like it is in sleep mode and NOT shut down. I open the cover but nothing happens, I try to wake it up but it won't wake up. I can hear the fans running and even after 20 minutes in this mode the bottom feels hot so it is as if the processor is working.... I usually have to open the lid and hold the power button for 5-10 seconds to actually get it to shut down... Anyone else having this problem or know what it could be?

I have exactly the same problem. Moreover when trying to wake up my Macbook Pro 15 inch (bought end October 2007) running Leopard 10.5.1 after use with an external screen, at work and at home, it wakes up but I often loose keyboard access, both internally and externaly, and both external and internal screens go black. Under these conditions the computer starts heating up and the fans start spinning. The only possible intervention left is to reboot the machine. This has already led to two hard disk crashes and a motherboard being replaced (all within two months), but the issue continues. Now, I noticed the following: when I boot the MacBook Pro by pressing the power switch while it is connected to an external keyboard and screen and I close the lid, it boots normally into one of the user accounts. When I now switch to another user account the external screen presents the additional window without the menu bar (mouse is active) as if the the primary window (with the menu bar) would be presented on the internal screen. However, when I open the lid the internal screen remains black. The new user account is active though since mail messages come in as normal with a beep. When I want to force the Macbook through a sleep and wakeup cycle to activate both screens they stay black and I loose all keyboard and mouse control and I have to reboot. After all this I am afraid to reboot and force a third disk crash. Has anybody experienced the same, or a similar, problem?

I have a 15 inch 2011 Mac Book Pro 10.7.4 and am trying to hook it up to a 55 inch Sony Bravia KDL55HX729. I am using a rocketfish mini displayport to HDMI adapter. If anybody has any tips it would be appreciated.

  • MacBook Pro will not work without external powersource

    Hello all,
I have (and love) my MBP. I've never had issue with it until tonight. My battery is at 100% charged, but when I unhook the Magsafe power source, the MPB shuts off instantly - and will not spool up until it is plugged back in.
    Any ideas?

Check your System Profiler (Apple menu > About this Mac > More Info, click on Power). Post the Battery Information and Charger stats here, please.
Here are mine, for example (currently on battery, need to plug in soon):
