My macbook pro will not start up or turn on.  Any suggestions?

I had the same issue I bought my MacBook Pro in Jan. my harddrive was bad and they had to replace it. I know the guy held down the shift botton for a little then pressed the power botton while still holding down the shift botton and it turned on but not completely since my hard drive was bad.

If running 10.7 or later hold down Command-R at Startup.
    This should invoke recovery Mode.
    Choose Disk Utility.
Select your Hard drive. Inspect the SMART Status in the lower right of the window for "Verified".
Select the Mac OS X Volume (originally Macintosh HD) click (Repair Disk)
If errors, run again until it comes clean or gets stuck.
    Report any error messages.

    Hi MJTOOTS,
Since you are getting to the login screen, it is booting past the "gray screen" phase, so try the steps in this article, like a Safe Boot.

Actually it sometimes gets a little further, the display will dim and the pointer will appear and then whoop it will turn off. if i do a verbose start up, it will finish all the steps, the white screen will appear and dim and then it will turn off.

  • MacBook pro, will not start up- drive begins

MacBook pro, will not start up- drive begins?

    OK, then try this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Since you can boot into safe mode successfully, I'm assuming the problem may be with a bad third-party extension or plug-in (such as a driver for third-party hardware or a bad Flash plug-in, for example.) It can also be a problem with a bad cache or preference file. If the above doesn't help then use a utility like Lion Cache Cleaner 6.0.5, Cocktail, TinkerTool Sys..., or OnyX to clean out user, system, and font caches.

  • HT1379 My Macbook Pro will not start at all. I automatically get the Apple Icon and a pinwheel that keeps clocking. How do I fix?

If anyone can assist with why my Macbook Pro will not pass the first screen, please respond. I have been getting the spinning pinwheel for a few days and cannot lg on now. In recent days I deleted some files and thought that would help the computer move a little faster but now it will not sllow me to access my account. Any suggestions on how to get pass the initial screen?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • My MacBook Pro will not start up, any suggestions?

My MacBook Pro will not boot up. I was aware of something odd when I switched it off a couple of hours ago  now when I push the 'on' switch something starts - fans I think, and the little indicator light on the front. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this problem?

  • TS1365 My MacBook Pro will not startup.  At all.  The suggestions from Apple Support are not helping.  At all.  Someone help?!?

My MacBook Pro will not startup.  Its not responding at all.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can correct this?

    HI Catherine,
First, make sure it it shut down by holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds. Plug in the power adapter. Press the power button and hold down the shift key to see if you can start in Safe Mode.
If the power adapter and/or battery are known good, the next thing I'd check would be the RAM to make sure it is securely seated. If batt and/or power adapter are questionable, then you'll want to find one or both and try them out; if you don't know someone with a similar MBP, this might be most easily accomplished by making a free appointment at an Apple Store "genius" bar.

  • My macbook pro will not start after pressing the power button

I have bought a macbook pro last year and now, I have a great problem since a few months.
My macbook does not boot up, I hear no fan noices and no LED lights are blinking...
Battey is full, but nothing happens (means system will not start up).
I have also tried to start with the Power button - but the similar effect "NOTHING HAPENS".
What I don't understand is, if I do nothing for one or two days and press then the power button, the system will start up and full functionality for a few days.
And anytime I get the same problem again... and must wait also for a few days.
    Can anybody support me please.
Thank you all in advance and looking forward to a fast reply.

  • Macbook pro will not start after login

My MacBook Pro (late 2011) with Mountain Lion OS will not start up after my login.  All I get after logging in is the spinwheel forever.  It will start from guest user.  PRAM reset doesn't help.  Any suggestions?

    Adam,
Try a safe boot, power up holding the shift key note this will take longer so be patient hold the shift till you see the progress bar and try to login. If it works try logging out and logging in normally.
There are some updates availabe that you might want to install.

  • My macbook pro will not  start up. I get the apple logo and the little  start up waiting avitar. I tried everything including starting with my back up drive and nothing happens.

My macbook pro mid 2012 will not start up. I was running bitdefender and when I went to see if it was done, I had the apple logo and the loading (winding circle) on the screen. I can not get out of this. I used my back up external drive and it did nothing. It did light up.

    samnleosgpa,
you may have faulty RAM. Are you able to boot into your MacBook Pro’s Apple Hardware Test (“AHT”)? If so, try running it to see if it can detect a problem. If you’re not able to run its AHT, and you’ve upgraded your MacBook Pro’s RAM before, try reïnstalling its original RAM and see if you can get past the “-6002F” error code. If you aren’t able to run its AHT, and you haven’t upgraded its RAM or you no longer have its original RAM, then I’d recommend that you make an appointment at your nearest Apple store to have them diagnose the problem.

My macbook pro 15 inch early 2008 model will not start on battery power but works fine when plugged in.

  • Macbook Pro will not start up.

My macbook pro just locked up.  When I reset it, it did not/will not start up. It stays on the light blue screen with a file folder with a question mark on it. What do I do?

Hold the option key while booting again, you should get a choice of OS X Lion as a boot option along with Lion Recovery Partition.
Once in Lion, use the Startup option in System Preferences to set Lion OS X as the boot option.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
If this don't work, then hold command r and boot into Lion Recovery Partition and use Disk Utility to Repair the Lion partition.
If both methods don't show something to choose or boot into something, then either your bootloader is hosed (tried installing Ubuntu/Linux?) or perhaps the drive is dead.
Hold t boot the problem Mac into Firewire Target Disk Mode and connect it to another Mac and see if the drive appears on the desktop of the other Mac.
If you tried to install Ubuntu/Linux, let me know I have a solution for fixing that as well, depending upon if you upgraded to Lion or not.
