I've been having this problem for a couple of years now, and it's getting pretty annoying.
I got this MacBook Pro in April of 2011. Otherwise, it works great. It goes to sleep when I go up to the apple menu and select "sleep." BUT, when I close the lid, it stays on. Heaven forbid I don't have it plugged in, because then the battery will be shot! It also won't go to sleep automatically when I leave it for a long time. Yet another potential battery drain.
How do I fix it so that it goes to sleep automatically when I close the lid and when I leave it alone for a while?
In Energy Saver, I have checked all the boxes necessary: "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" "Wake for network access" and "Automatically reduce brightness before display goes to sleep."
Am I missing something here, or does my computer just have a defect?

I had the same issue.
I used an external monitor but all of a sudden when I closed the lid my Macbook Pro did not go to sleep!
I solved the problem with a SMC reset.

My computer won't go to sleep when I close the lid. I tried restarting which fixed it at first but then a few hours later it started doing it again. This has been happening for about a week now. It only goes to sleep when I manually select it from the Apple menu. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I'm sorry if this issue has been raised elsewhere, but despite numerous searches all I can find is people who want to stop their MacBook from going to sleep when the lid is closed. I have the opposite problem, I want my machine to go to sleep when the lid is closed, but it won't. I have a 2011 model MacBook Pro, with Yosemite installed. A couple of months ago the logic board failed and had to be fixed. I installed Yosemite before the failure, and the problem with the machine not going to sleep occurred then as well, so I don't think the problem is related to the hardware repair. Does anyone have any idea how I can make this machine go to sleep when I close the lid?

I had the same issue on a Macbook Pro mid-2012. In my case when the display would go to sleep it would turn itself back on, display the login screen, go back to sleep and then repeat.
Reading through multiple posts I ended up with following observations/actions:
I ran pmset -g assertions and saw that the only thing that was set to keep my laptop awake was UserIsActive.
I checked my logs and noticed multiple entries for WindowServer: handle_will_sleep_auth_and_shield_windows: Deferring.
None of those gave me much information about what I can do. After that I read the post that fixed the problem:
I booted the laptop into safe mode. Waited for the display to sleep, woke it up and then restarted in normal mode. This seems to have fixed the problem for me so far.
Hope that might help someone else in the future.

My Macbook Air wouldn't go to sleep when I close the lid. I have tried to reset the SMC, but it didn't solve the problem.

Normaly it goes to sleep, when I close the Lid, but suddently this function stopped. That means that Mac'en still is running and become warm, during transport.

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
Step 1
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue...
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
Step 2
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter ▹ Wake for network access: uncheck. You may need to unlock the preference pane by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your administrator password.
Step 3
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Schedule… ▹ Start up or wake: uncheck
Step 4
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse or trackball, and monitor, if applicable.
Step 5
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar of the Activity Monitor window, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. The process will be relaunched immediately.
Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the Mac OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

I just got it back from getting the keyboard replaced due to a juice explosion, and now it won't go to sleep when I shut it. I've altered the energy saver settings to try to get it to sleep, but it just won't do it when it is closed!

Is your laptop sleeping with open screen? Are you able to make it sleep over the ON/OFF button?
Often these strange sleep porblems are also due to a software conflict. So try to create a new user, switch to this account an see, whether the problem persists. You could also try to restart by holding down the SHIFT key, to disable the start items. Does it sleep?
What is using your CPU? Is there something running and using mor than 80 % of your CPU? (Look into Activity Monitor).
Look into the Console (Applications > Utilities) and look into the error log, specailly after choosing the "Sleep" over the Apple-menu or the Power button. What are the errors?

Won't go to sleep when I close the lid

When I close the lid of my Macbook Pro (running Lion) it doesn't realy go to sleep. When I open the lid the screen goes black. Does anyone know what the issue is?

if you're sayingt he light doesn't blink anymore, that's new to lion.
if you are really having issues that you think are a bug instead of how it should work, try resetting your SMC as this should solve any issues with putting your computer to sleep with the lid.

Macbook pro doesn't go to sleep when I close screen

Okay so, I don't know exactly since when this started occurring, but whenever I close the screen of my macbook pro, it looks like it goes to sleep. but it doesn't. then when I open it back up, the fan goes up to 100% and the macbook is all warm and whatnot. Basically what I think, is that it doesn't actually go to sleep. maybe this has to do with the powernap function?
I don't really have any other problems afaik.

If you have issues like that (my MAcBook did not want to go to sleep while it was connected to power...)
what you can always do is power up the 'Terminal' and then punch in 'pmset -g assertions'. That's shoing you which application is holdng your mac back from sleep.

Why won't my MacBook Pro go to sleep when I close the lid?

All of a sudden, my MacBook Pro has stopped going to sleep when I close the lid. Instead, the indicator light on the front stays on steadily. When I then open the lid, I am asked to log in again, but before I can type anything, the window goes completely black. My only choice at this point has been to hold the power button down long enough to shut the laptop off. Then I wait a minute or so before restarting. Is there a setting I need to check to prevent all of this from happening? I have tried restarting in Safe Mode, then restarting normally, but still the laptop will not go to sleep when I close the lid.

Some process is impeding the sleep function. Since you've tried rebooting and it persists, check and see if Time Machine is hellbent on completing a backup, cause it can have that effect.

Won't sleep when I close the lid - HELP!

A while ago, my iBook G4 1GHz was knocked off of a table. The display was smashed and the whole display assembly was destroyed. I bought a new (used) display assembly and installed it. Worked fine, but when I closed the lid, the iBook woudn't sleep. I checked the placement of the magnet in the top case and I reset the PMU. Still no sleep. So I contacted the company that sold me the display and got a different one. Still won't sleep when I close the lid. I checked all of the energy settings, reset the PMU and even tried to force sleep with a magnet from another broken iBook. Still no sleep when I close the lid. It will sleep when I choose sleep from the Apple menu (OS Tiger) and when it sits for a while with the lid open, but not when I close the lid. Any thoughts?

My original problem has not been solved. The iBook still won't go to sleep when I close the lid. I have checked out any possible software causes, and have ruled them out. I have checked to make sure no keys were being pressed when I closed the lid. I took a magnet from another iBook top case and ran it down the side of the display to try to force sleep. No effect. I don't have any Firewire or USB devices attached, to that's not it. Apple, this board, PBFixit.com, and my local Apple-affiliated repair center have no idea why I am having this problem. Two display assemblies have experienced this problem. The original display had been destroyed in a drop. Could some internal damage, like maybe to the logic board, result in such a problem? It's odd that I am the only person out there who has had this problem. Weird, to be sure.

OSX 8.2 new Retina Macbook Pro won't wake from sleep.

Since upgrade to OSX 8.2 new Retina Macbook Pro won't wake from sleep. Tablet lights are on in morning and fans running like crazy, but it requires hard quit and start. Tried with no apps running, no change. It was fine before this last update. Wasn't the recent firmware update supposed to fix this issue? It seems to have started one for me.

I have the exact same problem with my Macbook Pro OS 10.8.4. What happens is: I work on the train, press cmd/alt + eject to put to sleep..pop it in my bag...get home or office... open the lid...and nothing! Battery indicator shows I have plenty of juice but it will not wake up no matter what key I press.
The only difference between use on the train and home/office is the plugging in of peripherals and mains power. It happens sparadicially, perhaps once or twice a week and I always send a 'panic report', so somewhere there will be approx 20 reports of this fault at Apple.

So if I hit the powerbutton my mbp booted like it is booting from the save sleep (so very fast and the login screen is there in about 10 sec.and there is no apple logo while booting just the desktop screen in "unsharp" ore foggy however...)
Then when i see the login (if the keyboard backlight turned on) i wand do tipe in my code but it won't work... the trackpad is not working; and when i plug-in a usb mouse the mbp is not powering on the usb-mouse (laser is off)
Why is that this way?
Is there n option to wake up the mbp fromm deep/save sleep without haveing issiues after that?

I was able to get to an apple store this past weekend, and let me tell you... I'm about finished with there great "support".
Right before I went to the store, I tried to eject a disk. Well the cloth in the SuperDrive (I assume to protect the drive from dust and such) Pulled up with my disk. So I get the Apple store, describe my problem and what happened with the cloth piece. The "Genius" writes up a form and tells me they have to run diagnostic and it will take a couple days... and I will get a call when its done (1-3 days).
Well on day number 3 I called up the store and they told me it was ready to be picked up? I asked if anything had been fixed and they told me they could not reproduce my "sleep issue", so they couldn't fix that.. but told me the cloth piece in the SuperDrive had been fixed.
I drive an hour (one way) to the Apple store to find that all they did was PULLED OUT the cloth... they did not replace it! So basically I have a hole for a Super Drive.
I asked why I was not called to say that my computer was ready to be picked up... didn't get an answer on that one.
I asked why my SuperDrive was said to be fixed, when nothing was done... they told me that it would have to be sent out to the factory store for that to be fixed (FIRST TIME THEY MENTIONED THAT!) Oh, and that would take 5-7 business days. Well that's not going to happen right now considering I'm a college student that NEEDS a working computer!
So I go home, angry... start just putting all my important documents back on the computer. And the screen starts blinking!!!! I guess now I have the same thing described in another post on these forms...
Lets just say that I'm not very happy with Apple right now! If anybody else has success on either the sleep issue or the screen blinking issue, please let me know!

I've been having this problem for some time now. Basically, since I got my brand new Macbook Pro for Christmas, it will go through spells when it does not go to sleep when I close the lid.
I haven't found a permanent solution but I have found a work around.
I was able to use the 'pmset -g log' terminal command to find out that mDNSResponder was the reason my MBP wouldn't fall alseep. So it has something to do with Bonjour.
I then found a pair of command codes to shut off and turn on Bonjour. After using them, my MBP goes to sleep without issue.
Turn Off Bonjour: sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
Turn On Bonjour: sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist
You'll notice that when you turn off Bonjour that you won't be able to use the Internet. That is the only down side to this work-around.
Does anyone know of a better way? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
